I would be able to do this,

I've never really
Seen celebrities
Except for on tv.
When I first meet someone,
It's uncomfortable for me
'Cause I'm shy.
But when
I'm on the stage singing,

- like a different person.

- a very large part of my life
Since the day I was born.

Were first generation
From puerto rico.
And we want to make sure
That our kids

I am 23 years old,
- And I'm from
- asbury park, new jersey.
I always kind of had the desire
To be a musician.
- Quincy went through a lot
- of different stages
When he was younger --
Pink hair, the blue hair,
The punk rock.

You know, the reggae.
You know, he kind of
Went through everything
- And kind of found
- what his trademark is.
My band is called quincy mumford
And the reason why.
We play funk, soul, reggae, r&b.
It's singer/songwriter kind of

The best part
About playing music
Is you get to meet
A lot of people.
- And I actually met my wife
- at a show.
And we hit it off,
- And she told me
- that she was from sweden,
- And that she was going home
- in two months.
For the next two years,
We traveled back and forth
Between both countries.
And I think it definitely
Brought us together.
In 2013, we finally decided
To tie the knot.
Being a musician at this level,
- There's not
- a whole lot of income.
So, I work in my parents' café.
I've never been
A very good cook.
But I do make a pretty good
Bacon, egg, and cheese.
And then I also teach
A lot of music lessons
In order to support
Me and my wife.
It is hard
To have this lifestyle.
- But this is such a passion

- And I'm gonna be his biggest fan
- through it all.

- my family in the states.

- And his family has took me in
- as their daughter.

We shared bunkbeds
In one bedroom.
I shared a bed
With my sister sophie,
And she would sing me to sleep.
I'd sometimes sing along,
And that probably helped me
Develop my voice.
I was 4 years old
When my parents decided to get
Separated.
Following through
With the divorce,
She got half the house,
So we ended up
Having to sell the log home.
Kind of broke my dad's heart
A little bit,
Taking us away from what
He worked so hard to give us.
But my dad thought
It would be best for the kids
If we went and stayed with him.
Moving away from the sanctuary
That my family had hurt.
I waited to go back home,
And it just never happened,
I guess.

I still go back to look at
All the memories that we had.
Those days, music helped
Because I could lock myself
In my room
And I could sing
As loud as possible.
When I started
To get a little older,
I started playing bars
And weddings,
But I needed a real job
That had constant income.
So I got a job here
At the general store.

It's a family tradition.

My dad did 26 years

For so many years,
- I had been trying
- to pursue a music career.

- didn't pan out with that,
- My uncle,
- he had been telling me,
"You should join the army."
A lot of people think
That the army
Is just front-line soldiers,
But you can be a doctor,
You can be a dentist,
You can be a cook.
You can also be a musician.
The west point band
Is the oldest musical
Organization in the army.
It goes back about 200 years.
Our main mission is
To provide world-class music
That educates, motivates,
And inspires
The academy's corps of cadets.
To know that I encourage a widow
Who just lost,
You know, her husband,
Encouraging my fellow soldiers,
It's pretty big.
We do pop music,
We do jazz, rock tunes.

- in great neck, new york,
But I live in washington, d.c.
My family was quite insistent
That I did not start
Trying to play music
Directly out of high school,
Which was probably a wise thing
For them to push me to do.
- I went to
- the university of maryland.
I studied business there.
And directly out of college,
I went to law school
At boston university.
- Did you practice law?
- I did.
- I started my own company
- out of law school
- And did
- real-estate title work.
Oh, wow.
Had about a 40-employee company
At one point.
- Our gross revenues
- were probably
- In the millions of dollars
- per year.
Then the market crashed,
Lost all my money.
No kidding.
Seriously?
Started over.
- And what I realized
- was that having all that money
- Wasn't necessarily
- the key to being happy
- And doing what you
- want to do is more important.
- Right. - So, it was at that point
- that I kind of, uh,
- Re-evaluated and started playing
- a lot more music.
When the market crashed,
I was literally
Days away from bankruptcy.
I have six rooms in my house.
I live in one
And rent the others out.
So I have five housemates.
I rent out the bedrooms
- To help pay the mortgage
- and keep the house,
- You know,
- not give it back to the bank.

I still work doing legal stuff,
But just five hours a day,
Which lets me play music
More than I would otherwise.
- The band that I'm in
- is called human country jukebox.
Playing in a band
Is a lot of hard work.
The late nights,
Hauling equipment around,
Not getting paid sometimes.
- But it's fun.
- It's worth every second of it.

Getting rid of the legal career

My name is briar jonnee.
I'm 20 years old,
- And I'm from
- shuqualak, mississippi.
- The population is
- about a thousand people.
And we don't even have
A grocery store.
So, we have to travel
Maybe like 13 miles
To even get, like, food.
- When I first started to sing
- in church,
I was about 6 years old.
My mom was a choir director.
As soon as she found out
That I could tap a piano,
She got me involved,
Playing for the choir.
- ♪ I believe
- that children are our future ♪
Eventually, a little voice
Came out of nowhere,
And I started to sing.
♪ What am I waiting for ♪
When I was younger, I definitely
Wanted to be an artist.
Hey, I'm briar,
And everyone tells me
I have a voice like an angel.
But coming from a small town,
I just didn't think that
That was a dream
I really could reach.
My school didn't have
A music program,
So in 10th grade,
I decided to audition
For mississippi school
Of performing arts.
It was a residential school
Three hours away
From my hometown.
I was happier
At performing arts school
Because I was able
To embrace my musical talent.
Now I'm in my sophomore year
Of college
At the university
Of southern mississippi.
I am a journalism major
Because I wanted a backup plan
That would allow me
To support my family.
But music is something I want to
Do for the rest of my life.

Going into middle school,
My mother put me
In musical theater
To get me out of my shell.
I was always so afraid
To sing in front of people

But I got positive feedback.

- It was just getting her over that shyness.

Once I got that embrace

I didn't really try
To pursue music
Until I got into middle school.
I joined a choir and I was
Really excited about it.
But I was known
As the chubby kid
That has a high voice,
And I got bullied a lot.
Having kids call me fat
Definitely played a part
In my confidence.
And I had that fear of people
Looking at me differently.
I felt rejected
All throughout high school.
I felt like music wasn't
Something that I could pursue.
But when I got to college,
- I decided
- that this was a fresh start.
And the people who did music
Were the cool kids.
I started a band
Called the rescue,
And we played every coffee shop
That was willing to take us.
Coming out of college,
My dream was always
To pursue music full time.
But my dad was diagnosed
With multiple sclerosis,
And it rocked my family.
He started losing his vision,
And he had to be
Put on disability from work.
My mom worked
Close to 70 hours a week
Just to help pay medical bills,
The mortgage.
And it took a really big toll
On them.
My mom and my dad eventually
Separated and lost their house.
It was just a smarter decision
For me to move back home.
I put music on hold
Because I just really
Wanted to be there for my dad
In any way that I could.
He needs a lot of help,
Whether it's around the house
Or getting places.
He's legally blind,
So he can't drive.

And to help out financially,
I got a job
In the insurance world.

My wife, kellie, and I
Were high-school sweethearts.
We got married
Right after college.
She was there
While the bullying was going on
And when my dad was diagnosed
With multiple sclerosis.
She's loved me
When I feel unlovable.
It's so uplifting just to know
- That she's always gonna be there
- for me.
What is that?
- Kellie: it's been really hard
- to see brian
- Put his musical dreams
- on hold.
So, I'm just so excited
That he can take
This opportunity

- my name is corey kent white,
- I'm 20 years old,
- and I'm from bixby, oklahoma.
When I was 8 years old,
I started playing guitar.
I first started playing shows
At the age of 11.
One thing led to another,
And I got the opportunity
To be the lead vocalist
For a western swing group
Called oklahoma stomp.
Donna: we did a lot of traveling
On the weekends.
Where some families pack up
And go play soccer,
We packed up and did
Oklahoma stomp performances.
I toured with oklahoma stomp
For about five years.
After the band ended and members
Moved off and went to college,
I was kind of left hanging.
- What do you consider to be
- your big break?
- About four years ago
- when I got the chance
- To step on stage
- with willie nelson.
- Wow. - That must have been cool.
- Great man there.
- I went to
- a willie nelson concert
With my grandfather.
I ended up front row
With this sign that said
"It's my dream
To play a song with you"
And held it up
- Until willie nelson
- stepped over the stage
- And looked me in the eyes
- and said,
"What do you want to play?"
That's when I said,
"Milk cow blues."
That night changed my life.
And I knew from that point on
That music is
What I wanted to do.
- I went off
- to oklahoma state university,
Put together a band,
- And started playing the
- fraternity and sorority circuit.
So, we've just been playing
- All these
- different college towns
And getting to travel a lot
And put my music out there.
As great as it is
Playing the college circuit,
I would love to play
The big stages
That legends like willie nelson
Have played.
You're an amazing grandson,

With an amazing talent.
