not what I'm used to.

I have my own band,

of a cover band
called New Band on the Block.
We play a lot of bars,

but I've been a probation
officer for five years.
My job is to supervise
on the conduct
of convicted offenders,
make contacts with offenders,
and motivate them and push them
to see their own potential
and how to overcome obstacles
like I overcame.
So this song, it's just
another challenge for me,
and I really feel like it's
really going to be a battle.
Deion, just maybe softer
in the beginning...

When I was 15,
I got asked to join Kick-It,
which is this boy band
that I kind of knew about.
I was definitely out
of my comfort zone.

It gave me confidence.
I needed that.
It made me realize
I wanted to be an artist.
But then when I was 16,
I got diagnosed with leukemia.
I froze in that moment.

tears rushing down my face.

Having known you and a few
of the other people on "Glee,"
you guys were recording
thousands of songs.
Oh, yeah.
So you've got thousands of hours
of experience
behind the microphone.
Yeah.
What was that like,
and how do you think
that'll apply to them
in this setting,
singing a song
that is just a classic?
Well, we sang a lot of
classics on that show,
and I always say that
doing "Glee"
was like a doctorate degree
in performing and recording.
You guys are doing a song
that all generations know.
When I first heard that we were
doing an Elton John song,
I wouldn't lie,
I was a little bit nervous,
because that's a pretty
big task to tackle.
Elton John is definitely
a very theatrical singer,
and I used to do musical theater
throughout middle school
and high school.
I also sing
a lot of big band music,
like the crooners.
I grew up watching videos
of Frank Sinatra
and B.B. King and Miles Davis
and all those guys,
so I think that my voice
is going to fit well.

When you went from
the raspy tone
to sort of more the pure tone,
it felt really good.

about Rachel's voice
is her ability
to control her vibrato.

I heard this song when I was
in my freshman year,
and I was being bullied
probably pretty badly.
This song helped me
through so much.
I'm not really like
kids nowadays.
I'm more quirky, as you can see.
And I have interesting
fashion taste,
but when you dress

you get teased a little bit.
I remember I was eating my lunch
in the principal's office,
because I didn't

and my music was just on shuffle

and I had a connection with it.

in a nursing home,

one of the hardest decisions
that I think she's had to make.
But she's going through it
like a fighter.
She's strong, just like my mom.
I think this song, it's about
remembering somebody
that you used to know,
and I think that's a constant
struggle for my grandma,
is to try and remember
who people are.
My grandma doesn't even
know that I'm here,
and I know that she's gonna
be so excited for me.

remember everything,
she remembers me and my voice,

appreciate that.
