Stee: My father was a musician,
and my mother was a vocalist.

I never wanted to
be compared to them,

so I actually wanted
to be an engineer.

I found out I needed
to be good at math.

Threw that away. So here we are.

My name is Stee.
I'm 34 years old.

I'm from Washington, D.C.,

but I currently live in
Bluffton, South Carolina.

My sister and I actually began
singing when we were babies.

She would use me to put
her harmonies together.

She was 6 or 7, and
she was very, very...

"Sing it right! Sing it right!"

We started writing songs
together in high school.

I found some talented friends.

We began to make
music together and record,

so we thought, "Let's
do this band thing.

Let's perform these songs live."

My family, we have
an incredible restaurant.

It's called Kind of Blue.

My band and I, we
perform every weekend.

My sister's in the band.
We are Stee and Ear Candy.

You know, we kind
of candy to your ears.

You know what I'm
saying? Stee's a star.

When he performs, he's electric.

since 14 years old.

one of my best friends.

I'm Chechi Sarai. I'm 32.
I'm from Pontiac, Michigan,

and I currently live in
Los Angeles, California.

This is the life, you know,
getting content and all this.

This is how we do it.

I am first generation
Nigerian-American.

My full name is Uchechi, and
"Uchechi" means "God's wish."

Both of my parents came to
the United States for college.

And growing up, I lived
very much, like, a double life.

I went to school, and it
was American culture.

Then as soon as I got home,

I feel like I just walked
right back into Nigeria.

Ogechi: The music, it's
always Nigerian music.

We dance a lot at home,

and the scents, the smells
of the dishes being cooked,

is quite interesting.

We have traditional soup.
We also eat a lot of rice.

There's always a big battle,

so I just want to
state for the record

that Nigerian rice
is the best jollof rice.

[ Laughs ]

That's gonna start a
w*r, but I'm okay with it.

When it got time
to go to college,

I went to school for medicine
to make my parents proud.

But something wasn't right.

She finished the first
term, and she say,

"Mom, I'm going to do music."

I almost passed out.

There was an
earthquake in that house.

And I know that it can
be hard for parents,

especially immigrants,

to find comfort in their
children pursuing music.

But my version of the American
Dream is my life right now.

This is my studio.

Since being in L.A., I've
been doing music full time,

and I've done a lot
of background gigs.

But to be here on "The
Voice" is a game changer.

year of high school,

and my teacher

And as soon as I sang it,
like I could get used to this.

So I just started going to open
mic nights, going to Nashville,

and it all just kind
of fell into place.

As much as I love music
and want to perform,

it doesn't pay the bills.

But my father was incarcerated

Once my dad was released,

he really showed
me a different side.

He opened up a club, and
I started my career there.

My dad just threw me
up onstage and was like,

But July 22nd of 2020,

my dad passed.

It literally felt like my entire
soul was snatched from my body.

I kind of lost that happy place.

There were a couple
months after my dad's passing

Richlands, Virginia.

Richlands is right in the
Appalachian Mountains.

It's a really
close-knit community.

go to the grocery store

without running into three
or four people that you know.

There's a lot of coal
mining history in our area.

My great-grandfather
and grandfather and dad

have all worked in... in mining
in some way, shape, or form.

I in part feel lucky

that I don't have to go
down into the mines.

I have this option
to play music.

The place I live has its
own really distinct sound.

People in my area don't take
too kindly to the term hillbilly,

but we say just
Appalachian music.

I've played in West Virginia,
Virginia, South Carolina,

North Carolina, Florida,
anywhere I can get to and play.

I love the gravel in your

My grandparents
introduced me to Motown.

My father introduced
me to country music.

So, I am ultimately
a country artist,

but I also draw a
little soul into country,

Both my parents
were in the military,

and that 100%
sparked my interest

to join the military myself.

I served in Afghanistan
from 2012 to 2013.

In Afghanistan, I took a mortar

It's a traumatic brain injury.

I don't remember too
much what happened,

but I was awarded
the Purple Heart.

And to watch him grow

and what he has

Being in the military
made me resilient,

and it definitely made me
put things in perspective.

from my Polynesian side.

Tongan and Samoan.

I was raised by my grandparents,
but with their passing,

I ended up going to foster care.

I was about 10 years
old when I lost my family

and my heritage, my culture.

It was definitely
traumatic for me.

I've been in about 10 homes.

I went through physical
and mental abuse.

Throughout that time, I
would always turn to music,

and that helped me
through those dark times.

I remember the first time
that I actually performed

was for a talent
show in high school.

I ended up doing really good,
but I ended up not making curfew

and unfortunately, I got
kicked out of my foster home.

I had to call a friend of mine

and I asked his mom if I
could come and spend the night.

That was the start of
our... our lives together.

He was friends with my son
that went to the same high school,

and he was always part of
what was going on at our house.

So, we never went
back to that family

and he just became part of ours.

She ended up adopting me.

Her support changed me

by showing me I
was worthy of love.

I feel lucky to
be part of his life.

I feel lucky to be his mom.

I don't have the most
extensive background

with doing a lot of shows,

so got a little bit of
nerves, but I'm excited.
