I'm 43 years old,

and I currently live

It's very difficult doing this audition,

but you just handled it
with such poise and grace.

Do you sing in church?
You kind of sound like you do.

I've been a worship director
for many, many years.

I also sing background
for professional artists like yourselves.

-[John] Uh-huh.
-[Val laughs]

I want to talk about
my son real quick, too.

He's here, and he's the reason
why I'm actually here.

-Can we bring him out? Bring him out.
-Yeah.

-Oh, yay! [chuckles]
-[audience cheers]

What's your son's name?

-This is Joshua.
-Hi, Joshua.

-Oh, no. I didn't get that gene.

But you have a story
of why you brought your son?

Yes.

-This is 'cause of you. [chuckles]
-Yeah. Yeah, that is true.

My son, he's been asking me for
at least the past three years,

like, "Mom, when are you
gonna go on 'The Voice'?"

I've done background vocals
for India.Arie,

Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin.

I've been watching the show
for, like, the last 10 years.

I know.

I've done some amazing things
in my lifetime,

but I want to show my kids that no matter
where you are in your life,

don't ever stop pursuing your dreams.

Don't ever look at your age.

Don't look at anything that may
be a barrier to everybody else.

Go for it no matter
where you are in your life.

-Did he happen to have a favorite coach?
-[audience applauds]

Someone who's got
some experience on "The Voice"?

-You know, maybe in his ninth season?
-[audience laughing]

-Nah.
-[laughing]

I'm just gonna tell you, Val,
I grew up singing gospel and soul music,

and I just love coaching artists
like yourself.

You're so gifted and it would be
such a joy to work with you.

Val, I'm taken aback right now.

I grew up singing gospel as well,

and I felt like I was in a worship service
for a second there.

[Dan] I was feeling it.

I think we can all agree
that this is really special,

and you have such a light.

I don't think it's the lights behind you.
I think it's just you

that's lighting up this room.
You're a star.

-You're a backup singer no more.
-Thank you.

Now you're the lead singer.

-One of the best performances we've seen.

You kicked it into a whole 'nother gear,
and it was just unbelievable.

You're gonna do so well,

I heard them say
that they grew up in church,

which I have never heard them say
in all of the auditions so far.

I run a Vacation Bible School in Chicago,

-and I work with the youth choir there.
-Oh, wow.

And these dudes heard me say that,
I think.

So that's why they throwing it at you.

-Next, we're gonna be wearing your hat.

I would honestly love
an opportunity to work with you.

Your breath control is ridiculous,

and I thought that you have such
a great control of your higher register.

You made it your own song, and I feel like
that's what this show is all about,

is people showing their true personalities
through their music.

I think it's so cool
that you listen to your son, too.

I really, really think that we can make
some special moments together.

"Well, I'm the country girl singer here.

I don't know what I could do
to contribute,

but then I got to thinking,

if I'm gonna give any notes,
I really need to pay attention

and see if there's anything
I can critique on."

in the business for a long, long time,

and you just look like a beautiful woman,

I've been waiting for so long
to find somebody

that I feel like has a powerhouse voice
and can really carry R & B,

and I think some of my most important
arrangements this season

are gonna come out of working with Val.

I chose Chance because
I watched him on season 23.

The way that he helped shape and
mold his artists was simply incredible,

and I'm looking for that in a coach.

I'm looking for somebody
that can bring all that creativity out.

I have 10 phenomenal artists
from all different kinds of genres.

I think I'm gonna get to meet
some future stars

and get to know them and work with them.

And the hard part is over.
Now we're getting to the fun.

I'm gotta learn how to run cool like that.

Chance was robbing me of some of mine.

[Dan] I was hoping for, like,
a pure R & B singer.

[John] Most of the time,
they know who they're going to pick,

and they usually stick with it.

Occasionally, you can, like, sway them
by saying, "Vacation Bible School."

-[chuckling]

I'm anxious, man.
I'm just ready to get out there.

My name is JoeWun Bee.

I'm 27 years old,
and I'm from Largo, Florida.

Music is in my family.

Like, everyone sings,
and they don't just sing, they sang.

In high school,
I sung in a group called Madrigals,

which is, like, the top-tier singers.

But a week before my senior year started,

me and my family found ourself homeless.

We ended up losing all of our money,

and we got an eviction notice.

There were seven of us. I felt hopeless.

I cried many nights,
but they didn't know it

'cause I was praying that we come out
and my children not be scarred.

[JoeWun] When we did
find ourself homeless,

I saw my mom picking up other side gigs

and I saw my brother
do all kinds of odd jobs.

We moved into an apartment.

After seeing all of my family members
just kick it into overdrive,

it really lit a fire under me.

Coming out of high school,
I started a band.

I've been on this journey to pursue music.

No matter what, you gonna be my winner.

For my blind audition, I'm singing
"Over My Head [Cable Car]" by The Fray.

What this song means to me is resilience.

No matter what's up against you,
find something.

That's the reason why I'm here,
to show everybody,

no matter what you go through,
no matter what you face,

keep your song.

So, I do a lot of background singing.

I also do a lot of just solo performances
and different things like that.

Well, it was wonderful,

I love the song choice, but it also felt
like a mismatch with the...

with the way you were singing it.

you really have this strong,

like, beautiful voice.

I just want to hear it all come together
with the right song and the right moment.

But I really think you're so talented
and I'm so happy you're here.

If we could have seen

Let me tell you a story. [chuckles]

I grew up with a musician as a parent.

My dad is a professional guitar player.

He's played in bands my entire life.

I started playing with his bar band
when I was a teenager.

I did my first blues festival at 12.

I started auditioning for musicals.

I started classical training.

I started really learning
how to use my voice,

and at the same time,

I always felt like something
wasn't quite right.

I knew I didn't fit in,
and I didn't really know why.

I was always the weird girl.
I was too loud.

I talked too much,
and I was never really included.

But in the past few years,
I've been diagnosed with autism,

and now it all really
does make sense. [chuckles]

I absolutely think my autism
is a huge reason

why I was hyper focused on singing.

I swear that it makes me
a better songwriter.

I see patterns in everything.

And since finding out,
life has been so much better.

I met my wife.

We've been together for eight years.

Her picture scrolled
across my phone screen...

and I stopped breathing.

We fell in love, and now we have
been married for seven years.

We have two dogs and a cat.

We're old, married ladies. It's great.

[chuckles]

This is it.

My name is Raina Chan.

I'm 14 years old,
and I am from Stafford, Virginia.

[baby vocalizing]

[parent] When Raina was young,
she was barely two years old,

sitting on Mom's lap, singing the alphabet
while attempting to play the piano.

I was like, "Wow, I have a singer here."

[chuckles]

My parents were both
born in the Philippines,

but they moved to the US
before I was born.

My whole family does music,

and my sister is probably
my biggest music buddy.

Sometimes, she plays the guitar,
and I would sing.

Sometimes we do piano duets.
So I have an amazing family.

-Yay!
-Yeah.

I am a sophomore in high school.

Go, Wildcats!

And one of the biggest events
that I've ever done

was actually in Washington, DC,

performing in front of the
president of the Philippines.

It was such an honor for me
to perform up on that stage.

Being 14, I have a lot of stuff
coming my way.

Like, I don't think I'm ready to drive.

I'm gonna be very honest.
But I am ready for "The Voice." [chuckles]

Music is definitely something
that I would like to do

for the rest of my life.

I just need that one coach
to believe in me.

Just... Just one chair. [chuckles]

Growing up as a producer's child
was the best.

Little me sleeping in guitar cases,

big honkin' guitars

that I had no business holding.

When I was about 14,
I came to my dad and I said,

"I've watched you produce everybody else.

Maybe you could kind of give me a go."

I'm so proud of you for going through this
'cause it's an amazing journey and...

the Linda Ronstadt,
