One artist will move on to the knockouts,

but another one
will get a special, special pass

to go straight to the playoffs.

I think it's the biggest honor
you can get in the battles.

[Nathan] I decided to go with John Legend
because we have similar styles

in terms of performing and singing,

so he's somebody that I've always
looked up to as an artist,

and I'm grateful that John also picked me.

Well, I'm excited to have

This is going to be one
of my favorite pairings, I have a feeling.

I chose "Rolling in the Deep"
by Adele for you guys.

I've actually covered this song, too.

Hearing a guy's voice on this song,
I think it really works.

It has a lot of passion
and energy and urgency,

and I felt like the two of you together,
it's going to sound amazing.

I paired Bryan and Nathan.
Both of them have a classic vibe to them.

They can belt. They're soulful.

This song has that urgency, that power
that I know these artists can deliver.

so many times.

When I finally got the printed-out lyrics,

I couldn't help but think what
I went through with my divorce.

My marriage ended after 24 years,

and there is a sense
that we could have had it all.

There was a period of time
where it was just pain

and sorrow that was inescapable.

But eventually, you got to get up.

This moment for me at "The Voice,"
for my kids to see that Dad is back.

He's not afraid to go for something again.
Like, that's what I want them to see.

When my daughter came out on stage,

it's definitely one of
the top moments of my life.

I'm so grateful to be happy,

so I just want to soak
in every second of it.

I was working on cruise ships
with my girlfriend.

I work as a guest entertainer.

Is it too much? Did I catch you off-guard?

I actually met my girlfriend
in rehearsals.

And from there, that "showmance"
kind of blossomed.

I was able to make my own show
with my girlfriend.

So, everything from costumes to songs.

I've been lucky enough to travel
to a lot of different places,

and I think in those travels,

I've always been searching
for who I want to be as an artist.

This is a pivotal moment in my journey.

Nathan is such a soulful guy.
He has a big, powerful voice.

He sings this with confidence
and with his own sense of style.

He knows when to get big,

but he also does these little, subtle
grace notes that are really interesting.

But both of them are so good
at what they do, and they're different,

but they're finding a way

What I loved about this performance
was that it felt very individual

in moments where you were both
able to shine.

Bryan, I felt like I was
watching a seasoned veteran

and, Nathan, everything was just amazing,

and I would like to just pick
one over the other, but...

that I love about Dan and Shay

is how great they are

My blind audition was very special
because Dan and Shay turned so fast.

It meant a lot to me that Dan and Shay,

was nerve-racking.

But it felt like it was worth it.

It was really great.

[Ryan] Not only was it just a cool
feeling to be on "The Voice,"

but they came up on stage
and literally sang with me.

It was an absolutely insane moment,
but I'm so thankful.

This is going to be awesome for you guys.

And we didn't just pick this song
because it was ours.

doing one of our songs.

A perfect blend and fusion
of rock and country music.

It's a pretty vocally complex song.

I get to listen to you
sing it every night.

Not an easy song to sing.

They got the challenge cut out for them.
It's going to be tough.

After we wrote this song, it was like,

it's awesome when you do
a high song in theory.

-Yeah.
-And then you're like, "Cool,

we're going to have to sing this
every single night

-for the rest of our lives."

When I first heard that I was going
to sing another Dan and Shay song,

it was like, "Are you kidding me?"

I was thinking maybe it was tryouts
to be Dan and Shay and Ryan.

Like, I don't know,
you know, I don't know.

I'm just saying, Dan and Shay,
if you're watching...

This song is about a relationship
where the narrator knows

that there's going to be heartbreak
at the end.

And relating to that,

like, I've been doing music
for a really long time.

I've had opportunities where labels
wanted to sign Marina City, my band,

and we almost did it,
but there was something that felt off.

We've been through the wringer
in this industry.

[Ryan, Karen]

But those decisions on not signing
early on all paid off, because I'm here.

I'm on "The Voice."

The song gives you
something to sing about,

because there's a conflict.

I have had situations in my life
where I felt like,

"Save me the trouble from having
to go through another heartbreak."

Had a very hard time finding love,
and it was worth the wait,

because now I have an incredible husband.

He is extremely supportive
of me and my career,

so I'm here to make him proud.

Karen is a bona fide country singer.

Her confidence on stage
is what stands out.

You can tell it's somebody
who's done the work.

She's a star. She's got what it takes.
She's comfortable. She's at home.

[Shay] I'm so fired up.

Hearing Karen and Ryan do our song,
it's a cool feeling, honestly.

It's like, we wrote this song,

and that's just really special
for us as songwriters to now be here.

And it's kind of a full-circle moment.

Wow. I don't even know

-That was so hard.
-Hard as rock.

It's so fun to sing.

Karen, I thought some of the higher stuff
that you did,

changing the melody was really cool.

The only thing I don't like
about that part

is it sounds just kind of like
you're singing a harmony by yourself.

Find those moments where
y'all can be facing each other

The viewers are not going to
be able to take their eyes

or their ears away if you guys do that,
and you really channel that.

Yes.

It's really cool that the first time
that we worked with Dan and Shay

was in a duo setting,
especially since they are a duo.

And you can really feel that energy
between the two. It's amazing.

Just be intentional
with where you breathe.

'Cause it's a tough, little phrasing there

-but just be intentional.

Yeah, if you breathe just a subtle breath
in between all those lines,

Ryan has such a phenomenal rock voice,

especially when he can get up there
and sing these high notes.

And a song like this really showcases
hitting the right notes at the right time.

It's the perfect selection for him,
because he's a phenomenal singer.

His tone is crazy,
and his range is ridiculous.

I feel like this battle
is going to come down

to whoever really makes
our song their own,

and I feel like that really stands out
to people watching back home.

It's a great combo to go
at this from multiple angles.

You're thinking

how they kind of put forth this song.

It's gonna be a tough one, Dan.
I have no idea what we're going to do.

We'll see how it goes.

When you first started,

Their culture is so vibrant, so alive.

What my mom told me is they said
Hawaii really represented,

like, kind of like the Brazilian culture.

I love everything about Hawaii,

so being able to represent back home
is so awesome to me.

What did you think about the song?

...but I have a lot of friends
who lived in Lahaina.

And doing this song,

In 2023, the worst wildfire
in the history of Hawaii

burned down the whole Lahaina town.

Thousands of people lost their homes.

The whole island stopped
everything that they did,

They opened their home.

My wife worked at the shelters every day,

and that inspires me
to continue to be strong,

to represent our people.

I remember my blind audition very faintly.

I remember Chance and Reba

and we were having
a conversation about who I was.

That's the goal, being here
is to represent all native people.

connect with him on a different level.

It excites me to see how he's going
