This song really connects
to my personal music career.

When I moved to Nashville,
I didn't know anyone.

I had a twin-sized bed,
an acoustic guitar,

a dream in my heart, and a voice.

I have taken a garment
that I wore to a gig to a shop,

sold that garment,

and literally used the same $20
to turn around

and buy a secondhand garment
from that same shop.

I have done whatever it took
to get to the next gig.

If I look back at my whole career,

it literally went like this.

I never had that huge spike.

This is that. This is the spike, baby!

I kind of want to create, like,
an arc to this performance.

Towards the front half,

I feel like you can be
a bit more internal,

save something to be desired.

As it builds,
then you open up a little bit more

and really work that crowd.

I think it takes a really tough person
to be able to show that vulnerability.

My mom was sending me a text. She's like,

"I don't know how you do all this."
I said, "Because I love it."

I moved to Nashville when I was 21,

and I've been full-time playing music,
touring all across America for 12 years.

You know, there's no deadline to dreams.

And I feel like a lot of people

-would've threw in the towel, you know?
-Yes.

But you have that ambitious spirit.

And that's important
for the world to see that.

That's so sweet.

It was spicy, but it was vulnerable
at the same time.

Like, as a woman, I felt it.

Don't strive for perfection,
strive for personality.

I always take my roots

Your ability to translate those roots

to the mainstream culture

Why did you want to do Bob Marley again?

Bob Marley stands for
a lot of the same things

that we stand for in Hawaii.

And some of the things that
I bring to the stage with me

when I perform and when I sing,
a message of peace,

a message of love.

Talent without discipline is nothing.
