Norwegian which means they're from

Norway well at school I started taking

classes in Norwegian folk dancing and

these are the special clothes they wear

when they do Norwegian dances are they

cool Ben believe me cool is not the

Ben is usually such a good dancer but

so those kids threw it away and so I

chew bones I I even get why you like to

chew on stinky old Sneakers but nles I

do not understand

this but Sizzle it's great it's hard but

chewy it's crunchy yet tender it's weird

Siz it's bad when your friends make fun

of something you like isn't

it hey has this ever happened to

you my friend tease me a lot with my

accordion because I practice my

accordion more than I play with my

friends kids really make fun of me

because I collect weird things I

sing and my friends say that you sing op

that I sing opera but I don't and that's

the only hobby I have that kids make fun

of well some kids like tease me for a

ballet but I just ignored them cuz

ballet is very good for you especially

if you play baseball sometimes sometimes

the kids at school say that I'm silly

cuz they collect

rocks you know those kids are right if

you like something you should do it even

if other people make fun of

you but I'm still angry at Leon juli and

Kiki

H so they don't like Norwegian Folk

dancing it doesn't mean they have to say

it's

hey I'm going to tell them

that and the one last little sneep here

papel pic see ah yeah if you fill the

paper a few times like this and you cut

it the right way you get let me show you

come with me these beautiful

incredible colorful ornaments see ah mhm

yeah well we use them in Mexico and we

use them for party ornaments

look my name is Miguel coio I'm from

Mexico today I'm cutting paper which in

Mexico we call papel picado in Spanish

papel picado is uh paper

cuts today I'm making a flag for the

flag I have a rectangular piece of paper

that I fold two or three

times I start working with a small

sister and I start proceeding with the

big

cuts

I keep working um some part sometimes on

the middle of the paper sometimes on the

edges the unfolding part of the paper is

very important especially if you are

work in an improvised way because the

pattern is always going to surprise you

the way it came

okay next you you prepare to cover the

stick with paper uh in order to do that

uh you get a long piece of paper

and you fold

it and you start like cutting

pieces so in the end uh you get this

like incredible long comb or

brush

you glue one of the edges and then you

start like rolling the the stick as if

you were eating a spaghetti with your

with your

[Music]

fork and when you're done you have this

beautiful flag that you can use for uh

for a holiday or for different

festivity I grew up doing this so uh for

me is like part of my uh daily routine

wake up and and and and make a flower

you know it's like playing an instrument

you just the way you you feel is going

to reflect on your

work wow wow see isn't that nice oh yes

Kiki I think it's very nice thank you

well of course some people might think

it's kind of

weird

weird are you kidding spending all that

time just cutting out pieces of paper

why some people might think it's kind of

weird

oama I don't think so Benny darling you

know what people have been doing that in

Mexico for a long time they're beautiful

and they take a lot of skill h ah

talking about skill and taking taking a

lot of time well the same thing can be

said of my Norwegian dancing so it's not

fair of you or anybody else to call it

weird it's not fair and it's pretty mean

things are pretty

these rocks are all different Leon

this Ben this is a fossil it's a Mark

that was made by F animal a long time

ago this rock is probably a million

years old oh so it's an old rock still

looks pretty weird

Leon Ben this is not weird this is a

part of the Earth's history it means

something H oh yeah well Leon my dances

mean something too and so does my

costume they're from the history of

Norway and they're not weird

either yeah so well you

right his costume and those dances they

do mean something something that I just

don't know

about I was mean to Ben

oh I got to do something to make up for

it but what can I

Ben oh yeah good Julie Julie would you

please tell me what on Earth this thing

is well certainly this is an old Chinese

instrument called a ye woo I've decided

to learn how to play it isn't it

wonderful I don't know some people might

think uh it's uh pretty

weird why would they think that well

just because instruments like this have

been making music for thousands of

years

this is

lening and look he's playing the

yo when he plays the yo he uses a bow

sort of like the one you use to play a

[Music]

violin the ye wolf has two strings they

sound the same so when you move the bow

back and forth you hear only one

note As you move your finger up the

strings the note gets

higher when you bounce your fingers the

strings sound like they're

[Music]

singing the little box at the end of the

strings makes the sound

louder it's wonderful how you can get

such beautiful music from such a simple

instrument

see it's a neat and unusual instrument

with an amazing sound I love

it face it Julie some people wouldn't

like it at all they' say it was

weird

well

oh Ben this is about your folk dancing

and that c costume isn't it well yes it

is I happen to like my folk dancing and

I like this costume and you have no

right to say that they are weird well I

can think that something is weird if I

want to can I just because you like

something doesn't mean I have to like it

no that's true

mhm

but just because you don't like it

doesn't mean it's weird

these kids are doing a traditional folk

dance from the country of Norway where

Ben's family comes

from the fiddle the lady is playing is

called a

hardanger the song she is playing is

called the Klo

dance everyone is wearing special

costumes like the clothes they wore in

Norway a long time

[Music]

ago folk dances like the Kap dance are

one of the ways people had fun long ago

before they had television radio or CD

players

[Music]

traditional folk dance try it yourself

it takes practice to learn how to do the

clap dance and it's

[Music]

fun

wow so that's what Ben was trying to do

no wonder it looks really fun yeah I've

never seen anything like it yeah it

looks hard you have to be a very good d

her to do something like

just didn't understand it yes and we

didn't know how much skill it takes to

do it but there's one more reason that

we shouldn't have called it weird Ben

see everybody likes different things and

you should respect the things that

someone else likes yeah even if you

don't like it yourself yeah and

especially if the other person is your

friend Benny we're really really sorry

that's okay forget it all of you into a

lot of trouble to learn the dance mhm

well I just think it's great that we can

all do so many different things together

yeah cuz this is
