it's a really eye-opening experience
for me because it's just vast.
You really feel like
you're in the center of the country.

- What was it like growing up here
for somebody who, obviously,
had such a natural creative energy?
I didn't feel, like, particularly inspired
to explore who I was.
- Hmm.
- Because I grew up quite religious.
And that is, in the religion that I was
in, very restrictive and very suffocating.

- And I know, for a lot of people,
it's actually very freeing.
For me, it almost did the opposite,
where I felt like I couldn't be myself.
That who I was, was a sin.
And I was going to hell no matter
how good of a person I was,
- or how much I loved God, and like...

...for being g*y and, like, I just
couldn't handle feeling ashamed anymore.
And when I moved to LA,
I just didn't feel that type of shame.
What part of Missouri is still in you,
do you think?
I'm so grateful I'm from here.
A lot of my family and I
have very different views.

And love is so not black-and-white for me.
Because I'm from the Midwest and, like,
come from a conservative community...
[Lowe] Hmm.
...I understand the fear
and where it comes from.
It's scary when it's something
you don't know or understand.

- It's like one degree every conversation.

Just like conversation after conversation,
and not just giving up on people that

What's one thing that we don't know?
How much she genuinely cares
about other people,
and how safe she makes you feel

There were all these, like, q*eer people
and feminists and...
And you realize,
this is why it's important
to come to small, Midwestern towns.

I looked out and I saw myself
every time I've played here.
You know, here we are in this theater
which means the world to you.
And you're back home
at the end of an incredible year.
- What are you thinking about next?
- I mean, we have the Grammys coming up.
I... It's, like,
such a double-edged sword for me
because I'm like, "Yes, it is a talent
show for, like, the popular kids."

- That's one side.
But the other side is, like, "Oh, my God.
How amazing is it that a g*y artist
wrote a g*y song that went number one,
with a g*y writer,
who did not grow up in the industry,
did not have an in,
has been busting her a*s
for, like, a decade?"
That's, like, honorable to me.
- It means something.

But at the same time... It's an honor to be
nominated with some of the other artists.

It was such a thrill
and such a rush in that moment.

that make an already amazing show
even more special...

where I set my dreams in stone.

listening to it over and over again
and then I got to my hotel
and that night I couldn't sleep
because the song
just kept playing in my head.
- So good. You knew you had one.
- And I was like, "Okay.
I think this is a good one.
I think this is gonna set me off
on to where I wanna go next."
What about those ones that you finish
and in the moment
you feel like you've got one...
you've got a friend for life,
- and it doesn't make the cut?

Well, that's the problem with
really good speakers in a studio.

And then you leave the studio
and you're like,
"Wait a second. That wasn't
exactly how I remember this."
It's the audio beauty filter.

It's crazy how you can really kid yourself

And the best thing to do is to
listen to it on not-so-good headphones.

going into the festive season?
