01x04 - Sokcho: Way Home

Post by bunniefuu »

What's up?

Why isn't the Internet working?

Have you turned it back on?

What about the modem?

Dad, it's that black thing in the back.

No, I mean that thing...

Don't mess with the line.

No, Dad, it's not that one.

I'll video call you back.

Is this what you mean?

Are you talking about this
blinking thing here?

Yes.

Pull this out?

No, Dad, don't touch that.
Please listen to me.

- You know those two lines?
- Do I turn it off?

Just leave them alone.

- Why won't it work?
- Don't touch that.

What should I do with it?

Plug it back in.

This was blinking on and off.

Why would it suddenly stop working?

Did you mess with something?

Press 1 for purchase.
Press 2 for technical issues.

We ask that you speak kindly
to our service team.

Yes, it's for the Internet.

I'm calling about my parent's place.

You are subscribed to HiBasic TV, right?

I think that's what it is.

I'll have you registered for a repair.

Yes, thank you.

There is currently a special offer
for a double TV connection.

Would you like to sign up?

There is only one TV there.

So, you only have one TV.

How about purchasing a 50-inch
UHD TV with a discount?

The rental installments are available
without an extra charge.

Excuse me, I'm sorry.

I just need to fix the Internet.

Yes, I see.

But with a bundled purchase
of our network carrier,

a great discount will be offered.

However, this does require a new device...

with some installment fee.

But we can offer you gift cards
to spend like cash.

Between malls and supermarkets,
which would you prefer?

I'll throw in an extra 40 dollars
considering everything.

Ma'am? Ma'am?

You have gray hair.

That comes to 100 dollars
for the total voucher...

When longing to disappear,
I take one-day trips.

I walk, eat, and let my mind wander.

(Lee Na Young)

(The Dancing Kangaroo)

(It's been a fun trip. Park Ha Kyung)

(One Day Off)

I haven't been to Sokcho in a while.

(Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market)

It seems a little different every time.

This is nice.

The sea remains unchanged.

Sokcho holds memories
of my first real trip.

I had been to other places before,

but this place truly felt like a getaway.

My dad was always buried in work.

After missing out on all other
summer holidays,

he managed to squeeze in the trip.

I romped around on the beach
like an excited puppy.

I don't remember my trip back home...

after being tuckered out.

We promised to go vacationing more often.

But my dad got busier with work.

And that became our last family trip.

The government will request
a bailout package...

to the International Monetary Fund.

The once-booming economy
is now in the past...

as it admits national default...

and seeks assistance from global entities.

The company my dad worked for
showed him the door.

There were school kids moving away.

And it was my turn before long.

Besides that, everything is foggy.

Being a teen at the time,

it was hard enough surviving each day.

The kids were none the wiser...

as their parents had braved the storm.

Just like how so many others did.

Now I've clocked in at the age
my parents were then.

But I still find myself struggling
with each passing day.

Would it be okay to get old this way?

(Episode 4
The Way Back)

What is happening to this country?

It's like a madhouse.

Why are they always making a fuss?

My word, that is frustrating.

They just want to be heard.

That's ridiculous.

How can this country keep rolling
if everyone starts yapping?

Well, just look at that.

The youth are out there protesting
when they should work.

That's because of unemployment.

There are plenty of jobs out there.

But all they want is something easy.

Back in the day, everyone toughed it out.

For whatever work we got,
we were grateful.

You should give it your all.

Overworking like that could
eventually k*ll you.

That's why they are protesting.

The businesses won't be running
with all that whining.

Then what about our economy?

Those politicians are the worst.

They are all the same.

Despite preaching about welfare
to win more votes,

they end up embezzling tax money
once they are elected.

There is deep trouble ahead
for our country,

so what's this fuss about welfare?

If you're fed and housed like commies,
it wouldn't be a democracy.

Now I hear our government
is funding lazy bums...

with our precious tax money.

Then who would even bother to work?

Everyone would stay jobless and have fun.

It's not easy making money.

Work takes much effort.

Nothing in this world comes easily.

What more can people do
if they lead backbreaking lives?

What's so hard about things now?

You haven't been through w*r
or even starvation.

Now that your bellies are full
and life is comfortable,

there is so much whining going on.

Life isn't only about being fed.

We have the highest suicide rate
among OECD countries...

for both the elderly and the youth.

And people don't have kids
because life is too hard.

Why would anyone think
of k*lling themselves?

Do you think it was easy
having kids before?

Don't you agree?

That's enough already.

Mind your own business.

What? I said nothing wrong.

Anyway, young people are a problem
these days.

They don't have any grit.

Isn't that right?

Mister, that's not quite right.

What?

Young people have their own set
of problems.

There are struggles for every generation.

That's not something you can compare,
Mister.

Who are you calling "Mister?"

What?

Are you saying I'm too old
to know any better?

No, please don't take me wrong.

Then how should I address you?

You should call me "Sir."

Yes, all right, sir.

I never said you have it all easy.

But life is supposed to be difficult.

In times of trouble,

we should come together in strength.

That can make this country run smoothly.

But all that loud bickering
only causes trouble.

Democracy is always loud by nature.

With so many different minds at work,
it's supposed to be noisy.

How can you keep everything quiet
with so many people?

Isn't that more unsettling?

What did you say?

And you keep criticizing welfare,

but you also benefit from it.

Are you trying to patronize me?

No, I was just...

If there is something to learn
from one another,

we should exchange and share
our different opinions.

Teaching each other like that...

could be a good thing, sir.

That's the thing these days.

Women are more trouble.

What?

You talk back to an elder like me,

and think you know better.

The likes of you don't marry
or even have kids.

That seems irrelevant to this.

You know that I'm right.

Are you married or do you have any kids?

No.

How can you be that selfish?

Aren't you worried about this country?

In Japan right now,

one-third of its population
is older than age 65.

That won't be long for our country.

In 100 years, we'd be down by a third
with half of the population being elders.

Sir.

Having kids won't magically
fix all our problems,

and everyone has their own reasons.

And if you insist on nitpicking,

what about climate change
threatening this world?

For the future of our young ones,

maybe you should start
worrying about that.

Why would I bother about the world
when we're doomed here?

You are completely clueless.

This country is going to the dogs.

You keep talking about our country,

but what is your country?

How dare you speak that way!

You wouldn't have all this
if it weren't for us!

If that's how you see it,

it's the young generation
that provides for you!

What did you say?

The bus is here, so just leave it.

Look at you picking bones to the very end.

I guess having the last word
makes it all worth it!

Do you think you'll never get old?

You're too tall for your own good.

I'm old enough already.

(Dad: When is the repairman coming?
Sorry to bother you.)

Grandpa.

Grandpa, when are you coming?

Where are you now?

I'm on the bus right now.

Grandpa and Grandma are on the way.

They are on the way.

Where is Grandma?

She is right here.

Look.

- Ta-da.
- Ta-da.

Do you see her?

- Grandma, come quickly.
- Grandma, do come quickly.

Okay, we're almost there.

I'll see you in a little bit.

- All right.
- All right.

We will be there soon, so hang tight.

Let's have a delicious dinner.

- Okay, come safely.
- Come safely.

All right.

Bye.

- I love you.
- What a sweet pumpkin.

My goodness.

When did they grow so big?

My goodness, they're so sweet.

We have arrived.

The bus will soon reach the terminal.

Please check all your belongings
before getting off.

Make sure to take your luggage
from the cargo area.

And push the button on the back...

to get your seat upright again.

Have a good trip.

Excuse me, sir.

Sir.

Sir.

Sir.

I got carried away before.

It was disrespectful of me
to speak that way.

I apologize for my behavior.

I'm sorry.

Don't worry.

You were only worried for
our country as much as he was.

What are you looking for?

You know,
that thing we packed for the kids.

I found it.

Here, take this.

They are home-cooked treats.

You don't have to...

- Take it already.
- Go ahead.

Come now.

Let's go meet the kids now.
They're waiting.

We'll get going.

Have a good night.

Thanks.

Take care.

Goodbye.

(Dad: The Internet is so fast now.
Your mom loves it. Thanks.)

What are you up to?
Is the Internet working well?

That's good.

I'm eating fried seaweed.

I got it done easily.

Don't mention it.

I'll see you.

Okay.

That's refreshing.

(Lee Na Young)

(Park In Hwan)

(Byun Jung Hee, Lee Seo Hwan)

It's time to eat.

The kangaroo spoke.

"Dance."

"I want you to keep dancing."

"You can grow in good time..."

"only when you're up dancing."
