I'm Annie.

And this is one of my favorite books.

It's a story about monsters.

-Ooh.
-But, Annie,

aren't you afraid of monsters?

Not me. I think monsters are neat.

Especially the monsters in this book.

They're music monsters.

Whoa, music monsters.

Do you want to see
the cool music monsters in my book?

Great!

Once upon a time,

there were four best friend
music monsters.

A blue monster...

[violin plays]

A green monster...

[flute plays]

An orange monster...

[French horn plays]

And my favorite monster of all...

The Little Red Monster.

[Leo] Hmm.
I don't see a Little Red Monster.

Where is the red monster?

Yes! There he is.

[piano plays]

[all laughing]

[Annie] The music monsters
all love to play and make music.

[violin plays]

[flute plays]

[French horn plays]

-[boing]
-[music plays at once]

[sniffling]

[Quincy] Aww. They got a boo-boo.

[June] They look sad.

[Annie] Yes.

Sometimes the music monsters
would feel sad or scared.

But whenever that happened,

the Little Red Monster
always made them feel better.

He'd sing them a special song,
his smile song!

["Piano Concerto No. 21" plays]

[June] Wow. His song made
the other monsters feel better.

[Quincy] He made everyone smile.

No wonder the Little Red Monster
is your favorite, Annie.

Yeah. He has smile power.

I just wish someday
I could meet the Little Red Monster.

Listen.

It sounds like there's someone
under Annie's bed.

[music continues]

Who do you think is under my bed?

Yes. It's the Little Red Monster.

Little Red Monster
wanted to come meet Annie.

He's singing his smile song for her.

It worked. His smile song made me smile.

Me, too.

Everyone is smiling.

Can you smile really big like me?

Wow! What a great smile.

[clashing music plays]

Hey! That sounds like
the other music monsters.

Sounds like they're in trouble.

Come on!

Little Red Monster,

we can use my telescope
to look for your friends.

-[growling]
-[music playing]

[June] Oh, no!

That big, grumpy water monster
is trapping your friends in a cage.

[Annie gasps]
That's the Loch Ness Monster.

She doesn't like it
when people are happy and having fun.

[Leo] This is awful!

Now Little Red Monster's friends
can't play and have fun anymore.

[June] Poor music monsters. They're sad.

[piano plays]

Look. Little Red Monster
wants to save his friends.

But he's going to need help.

Don't worry, Little Red Monster.
We'll help you rescue them.

We're the Little Einsteins.

[piano plays]

But to save Little Red Monster's friends,
we're going to need your help.

Will you help us save
Little Red Monster's friends?

Great!

We've got a mission.

We're going to save
Little Red Monster's friends.

Let the mission...

begin!

Buckle your seatbelts!

[kids] Seatbelts buckled!

Prepare for blast-off!
We need to give Rocket a lot of power.

Put your hands on your lap
and pat with us!

Pat, pat, pat, pat, pat, pat, pat, pat.

Faster!

[rapidly] Pat, pat, pat, pat, pat.

Now, raise your arms as high as you can

and say, "blast-off!"

[all] Blast-off!

[June] Hold on tight, 'cause here we go!

-Whoo-hoo!
-All right!

I hear Little Red Monster's friends.

[whimpering]

Poor music monsters.

They're still trapped inside
the grumpy Loch Ness Monster's cage.

[piano plays]

Right, Little Red Monster.
We have to hurry and rescue them.

[Quincy] Go Rocket!

[Leo] We made it all the way to Scotland.

Come on, team.

Little Red Monster's
going to show us the way.

Ooh.

To get to Little Red Monster's friends,

we have to go through an icky, spooky bog.

Yikes! I'm not sure I want to go in there.

[Leo] It looks kind of scary.

["Piano Concerto No. 21" plays]

Little Red Monster is trying
to help us not feel scared.

He's singing his smile song.

Little Red Monster, I'll sing it with you.

[singing to "Piano Concerto No. 21"]

♪ Everyone will smile ♪

♪ I love it when you smile ♪

The smile song worked.
I don't feel scared anymore.

I feel better, too.

[Leo] His song even made Rocket smile.

Come on, Little Red Monster.

Whoa, look. There's music in the bog.

Hmm.

I don't see Little Red Monster anywhere.

Where did he go?

[gasps] Yes, there he is.
He's riding on a music note.

[all laughing]

What a funny little monster.

[piano plays]

[Leo] The music note is carrying
Little Red Monster across the bog.

Come on, team. We can all ride the notes.

[classical music plays]

[all] Whee!

This is awesome.

[classical music continues]

-[crunching]
-Uh-oh.

That sounds like a snapping turtle.

-[music stops]
-Where is the snapping turtle?

[crunching]

Yes. He's at the bottom of the bog

like us.

[Leo] Yikes!

We need to make our notes go up high
so we don't get snapped by the turtle.

[piano plays]

Listen.
Little Red Monster knows what to do.

He's singing high notes.

[piano plays]

When he sings a high note,
it makes his music note go up high

over the snapping turtle.

Come on. We can do that, too.

Hold up your microphone like me.

Let's sing a...

Sing!

[all] ♪ High note ♪

We made our notes go up high
where the snapping turtle couldn't get us.

-[crunching]
-Uh-oh.

Here comes another snapping turtle.

[crunching]

[piano plays]

Listen.
Little Red Monster is singing a low note.

[piano plays]

It's making his music note go down low

under the snapping turtle.

We can do that, too.

Let's sing a...

We're going under the snapping turtle.

Yikes! But here come
lots of snapping turtles!

and Little Red Monster.

And we made it out of the spooky bog.

I hear them. We have to go this way.

Ooh, look.
The path goes through Edinburgh castle.

[June] It sure is dark in here.

Thanks, Rocket.

Little Red Monster sees the way out.

[door slams]

Uh-oh. The door closed.

[oboe plays]

That's not just any door.
It's a door monster!

A door monster?

[oboe plays]

The door monster doesn't want
to let us out of this castle.

But we need to get out so we can save
Little Red Monster's friends.

[piano trills]

Listen.

The door monster has a keyhole
on his nose that makes music.

The keyhole sounds like a piano.

[piano trills]

To open the door monster's door,

we need to find a key
that sounds like a piano.

[piano plays]

Look. Little Red Monster found keys.

[June] Ooh. But there are four keys.

We're going to have to listen carefully

to find the one key
that sounds like a piano.

I know what a piano sounds like.
A piano sounds like this.

[playing piano]

Now let's listen to the keys.

Put your hand up next to your ear and
listen.

[violin trills]

[piano trills]

[saxophone trills]

[French horn trills]

Ooh. That's tricky.
Let's listen one more time.

Remember, a piano sounds like this.

Listen carefully.

The yellow key. Yes.

[all] Hooray!

We did it.
We opened the door monster's door.

[door monster sobbing]

Aww. The door monster is crying.

[Leo] He's sad that we're
leaving his castle.

I wish there was some way
we could make him feel better.

Little Red Monster knows
how to make him feel better.

He's singing his smile song.

the door monster feel better.

So long, door monster.

I hear Little Red Monster's friends.

[whimpering]

[Leo] They really want to get out,
but the grumpy Loch Ness Monster

won't let them go.

We've got to hurry and rescue them.

Don't worry.

Rocket can get us there.
He can fly super fast!

To get to super fast,
we have to start at adagio.

Pat the beat on your lap slowly.

-[beep]
-Moderato.

Now pat the beat
on your tummy a little faster.

-[beep]
-Allegro.

Now pat the beat
on your shoulders even faster!

-[beep]
-Presto!

Now reach your arms to the sky
and shake your whole body!

We did it! We're flying super fast!

[Leo] All right! We made it.

[June] And look.
The Loch Ness Monster is sleeping.

[snoring]

Don't worry, music monsters.

We'll have you
out of that cage in no time.

[piano plays]

Uh-oh. Little Red Monster sees trouble.

Did the Loch Ness Monster
wake up from her nap?

[growling]

You're right. She woke up.

And she looks really grumpy.

Oh, no. The Loch Ness Monster

doesn't want Little Red Monster
to save his friends.

She doesn't like it
when they're happy and smiling.

But smiling is wonderful.

I wish we could show the Loch Ness Monster
how good it feels to smile.

["Piano Concerto No. 21" plays]

[Annie gasps] Look, look, look!

Little Red Monster is singing
his smile song

to the Loch Ness Monster.

He is trying to make
the Loch Ness Monster smile.

Little Red Monster needs our help

to make the Loch Ness Monster smile.

Sit up straight
and hold up your microphone.

Now sing the smile song.

[gasps]

The Loch Ness Monster's frown is changing.

But she's not smiling yet.

We have to sing the smile song
very loudly.

Did we make the Loch Ness Monster smile?

[roaring]

Yes! We did it!
The Loch Ness Monster is smiling.

[Quincy] I cannot believe it.

She's happy.

[Leo] From now on,
the Loch Ness Monster

is going to be a friendly,
smiling monster.

She's letting the music monsters
out of the cage.

[Leo] Now they can play
and be happy again.

Little Red Monster, you saved the day.

Now everyone can smile.

[piano plays]

Aww.

Mission completion!

Now, it's time for...

[cheering and applause]
