So for the second performance
in our semifinal,

it's time for the narrative challenge.

The choreographers have to tell
a story through dance.

Our first choreographer is known
to have quite a few tricks up his sleeve,

and he is here to mix it up.

It's Keenan.

is the narrative challenge.

Inside the envelope, you'll find
a short story you must tell through dance.

What happens next?"

Oh, okay, cute, kind of. Kind of.

It's very slow.

I'm not a slow person.

I like to move.
I like energy. I like vibes.

Okay, it's cute.

We got this really
corny-a*s narrative. [Laughs]

"You see the love of your life
for the first time. Is it real?"

My main concern with the narrative
challenge is the fact it's really slow.

Enough talking. Let's get started.

I need to bring life to the song.

[scatting]

I need to show a little bit
of versatility, maybe some partnering.

I chose James and Lucia to do the lifts
because they have great chemistry.

Lucia is really light, so you can
throw her a*s all over the place,

doing one-handed lifts,
doing multiple lifts at a time.

It's gonna be tough.

- The nerves, the short time. I'm scared!
- Mmm-hmm.

We've gotta do our best,
there's responsibility,

but that doesn't mean we'll vote for him.
This is a competition.

We've not seen anyone else's pieces.

Semifinals, you gotta bring
something different.

You're holding somebody up with one hand.

If you aren't strong enough,
you'll drop them.

It has to be precise.

There's a lot of pressure
for the semifinals.

So I hope my narrative reads.
I hope people understand the story.

Having more dancers on this stage
is sometimes an advantage,

but I think with such an intimate story,
it would be easier to have less dancers.

This narrative just has to be clean.
We have to really tell this story.

and feel like they're with us.

What's the story behind this piece?

The narrative was
"A Night Under the Stars."

"You see the love of your life
for the first time. Is it real?" Yeah.

So when I got it, I knew
I wanted to do some type of partnering,

because I know that James and Lu
have this great partnering chemistry.

And there's so many people
on this team that have technique.

I wanted it to feel nice. I wanted it
to feel like this euphoric moment.

[audience cheering]

All right, let's send it up
to our eyes in the sky.

Joseph, it was "A Night Under the Stars."
Were you on board?

{\an8}Keenan, congratulations
on executing this narrative piece.

It was clear from the beginning
they were star-crossed lovers.

Also with the song, how fear is that thing
that's blocking her from getting there.

He's like, "I'm here, I can support you."
She's like… [exclaiming]

And I'm just like, "My heartstrings!
Just say yes, say yes!"

Oh, my goodness.
It was so beautiful, so celestial.

I enjoyed everything. Great,

Some of your dancers are more
well-versed in this style than others.

You can tell the difference and it clashes
a little bit. Other than that, I love it.

[Ally] Armando, were you
and Keenan on the same page?

{\an8}I am such a sucker for love stories.

And I think from start
to finish, it was very clear.

Honestly, at the end, when Luc just had
that moment, I got goosebumps.

And I loved it. It was great.

A different side of you. Tell me about it.

It's the semifinals.
Would you do anything differently?

My goal coming on this show

was to show people
I could do everything, you know?

So it was important to show I could be
a ratchet b*tch and give you that.

But to do this and for you guys
to feel it, it means so much to me

'cause I was so nervous about it.

So I'm happy it read the way
I wanted it to.

It's time for our next choreographer.

His narrative was "On the Run."

But will it be a marathon or a sprint?

We have to create a performance
with a narrative.

My narrative is,

I'm a secret agent on the run,
and I'm being chased and what happens?

I don't know about y'all,
but I definitely ran into a wall.

I'm tired, exhausted.
I can feel it in my body.

I think I've hit my first obstacle.

Uh… Uh…

How's that chorus start?

Creatively, you're trying
to lead 25 people.

Like, "Follow me!
But we're going into the dark."

We can just leave it here.

I was stressed the past couple days,
a bit overwhelmed.

Kind of ran into a creative roadblock.

I took the last two days to have
some conversations with friends,

and I was reminded to enjoy it.
We're so close.

{\an8}- What have you been doing?
- Kind of the same old.

{\an8}- Same?
- Yeah, still trying to create.

{\an8}Clay Lee is a mentor of mine.

The guy that gave me my first teaching job

at the local community center in Boise.

{\an8}We would come here every Friday and dance
until this place closed at what, 10:00?

- 11:00.
- 11:00 p.m.

[Max] So I think, without Clay
supporting my dance career

and wanting me to pursue my dreams
of being a professional dancer,

I think that things would probably look
a lot different than they do right now.

You were always
the most driven, dedicated kid ever.

I would say passionate.

You can fail at something,
but you won't lose unless you quit.

I think I just have to
keep doing my thing.

Definitely I like "I'm coming for you."

The narrative piece
is a story of a secret agent.

One of my guys, Robbie,

having to ward off
a battalion of army dancers.

It's fun to watch him.

So much character, you know,
but the dancing is exciting.

It's meant to feel
in-your-face and aggressive,

and a bit overwhelming
because it's basically one on 25.

There has to be a clear story line,

because if there's any room
for feedback, it's on a narrative piece.

And if you can't follow the story,
you're gonna hear something about it.

We've got a little surprise at the end,
and I can't wait to see it unfold.

The prompt was "Secret Agent."

the streets. What happens next?"

- So that's what we had with our 007.

I wanted to lean into the narrative
and create a bit of a video game.

Let's go ahead and talk to the Dance 100.

Ola, do you think Max handled
the storytelling challenge well?

{\an8}Yeah. I wasn't sure at the beginning
who was good or bad in this story.

{\an8}But I was engaged with it, and following
what was happening, and you got me.

I didn't know you swapped the people.

That shows how smart you are
as a choreographer

to execute this whole story
that you created.

[Ally] All right. Thanks, Ola.

Brooke, would that choreography be running
through your mind when it comes to a vote?

I think it definitely will.

{\an8}I enjoyed the piece.
Your chorography speaks for itself.

But I will say, I wish there was
a little bit more engagement with us.

I wish the whole group was more involved
within his journey.

What did you think of the concept?

I really enjoyed it.

Obviously, the breaking, you've got
choreo in there. Travelling, it was cute.

but she's anything but boring.

As much as I love the Brooklynettes,
I've been with them for seven seasons.

And this competition
has been the perfect time

for me to break free from the mold.

This week, we have a narrative challenge.

They've given me the song
and the story to tell.

We're breaking free.
We're breaking free from jobs we hate.

My idea is that we're all factory workers.
We'll all be wearing the same thing.

On your face, you'll have mask things on.

So you have no individuality at all.

And then we break free,
and we're our own people and stuff.

I don't expect the win to be handed to me.
I'm working my a*s off.

feeling limited,

The beginning was a little blurred,

figuring out the story as we went,

versus following along
through the process.

One thing that I would have changed,

My theme that I got
is "Underground Circus."

Basically, I'll be the ringleader,

you are my circus family,
and we're going to feature Brooke.

She'll be our little,
sweet angel that gets pulled up,

and we just turn her into this feisty,

little underground circus member
of our family, yeah?

Brooke's one of my favorites.
Like, she honestly is such a little beast,

and she's got strong feminine vibes.

And that is something
that is very, very important for me

because I come from a family
of strong, stubborn females.

My mom, my grandma, and my great grandma,
they're all badass b*tches.

I mean, I'm a little nervous
just because being the focal point,

I feel like that is a certain pressure.

With this lift, it's a little stressful

It's definitely a challenge,

The storyline needs to be clear,

Sure, I was a focal point, but for me,

Like, it's a group effort,

turned out the way it did.
