[Glenn] This is one of

the best atmospheres

that I have observed in

my 52 Spring Trainings.

It's just something about

the chemistry of this team,

the camaraderie, the enthusiasm

that you see in that clubhouse.

What Alex has done with this

team is absolutely amazing.

It is you ♪

We got a lot of

people in the family.

The next six weeks, hang out,

go out to dinner, meet people.

They get along great. No, bitching,

no complaining about drills.

They just put their head

down and kept working.

After the game on Wednesday,

we'll have the BBQ.

There's been good clubhouse that

don't finish in first place.

But one thing for sure,

I never been part of a bad

clubhouse having successful seasons.

[Booser] You're sharing the clubhouse

with guys who have won Gold Gloves.

Getting to sit and listen to Alex Cora

talk each morning, it's incredible.

I kinda look around and be like, "I'm

in camp with the Boston Red Sox."

Like, this is, you know,

one of the coolest things

I've ever… I've ever seen.

- [Cora] Boos.

- [Andrew] Morning.

- [Craig] Morning.

- Good morning.

[Cora] What's up, kid?

- Um… We're making moves.

- Yeah.

We're gonna reassign you

to… to minor league camp.

- Understood.

- But great job, man.

[Booser] Thank you.

I never expected to be here,

so I took every day for what it was and

greatest experience of my life so far.

Obviously, you've been

through a ton, right?

But you're here. You're

f*cking banging on the door.

Like, don't be thankful

that you had a day here.

You're a big leaguer. Be like,

"What the f*ck are you guys doing?"

"You're making a mistake."

'Cause we might be.

I got invited to camp

as a non-roster invite,

meaning I'm not on the 40-man roster,

but I will attend Major League camp,

and go through everything that

all the guys on the roster does.

How's this? Am I all

right? Any stragglers?

You look elite.

Like a man amongst boys.

Cam Booser, to tell the truth,

a guy I did not know a lot about

going into Spring Training.

So he came in as just another guy,

and then I looked up his profile,

and I said, "This guy's 31 years

old." You know, "What is he doing?"

"He's still in the minor leagues

at 31, and he's throwing 98."

"What happened to this guy?"

So I just went and did some research,

and it was just an amazing story,

all the things this

guy went through.

The timeline of his whole

life is struggle, fight back,

struggle, fight back.

[poignant music plays]

His sophomore year, he played

football, and he snapped his femur.

You could hear the snap.

I've never heard that kind

of agonizing scream of pain.

Lifting weights in high

school, he broke his vertebrae.

[Booser] I had Tommy John in July of 2011

after my freshman year at Oregon State,

and then I transferred

to Central Arizona,

and I got hurt again, so I didn't

really pitch all that much.

[Ian] He finally got healthy.

The Twins drafted him.

And then he tore his labrum.

[Booser] The Minnesota Twins

doctor performed that surgery.

Then, when I was rehabbing my shoulder,

I got hit by a car on a bicycle

and fractured my sacrum.

I was pretty limited with my mobility

and being able to move around after that.

I ended up medically retiring.

I felt like that was my

only shot and I ruined it.

So he goes home to Seattle,

and he becomes a carpenter.

- [ball thwacks]

- [crowd cheers]

[Booser] Throughout the time

that I was away from the game,

I developed rather a

pretty bad alcohol problem.

It caused me to burn most bridges

that I had built with most people.

Through the strength of my loved ones,

I was able to kinda come out of that

and ultimately come

through it a better man.

And through the power of God, I've

found a lot of peace through it.

- [crowd cheers, applauds]

- [announcers chatters indistinctly]

So he just thought

this was his life.

But he was doing these

pitching lessons with kids,

and once the kids would leave,

he would throw against a net.

I would just grab

a bucket of ba*ls

and fantasize about one day

coming back and playing.

[Ian] He got the radar g*n

going, and he saw 96, 97.

[Booser] I knew I wasn't done playing.

I knew that I had plenty left in my arm.

Slowly but surely, the game

started pulling me back.

In January, we finally got

a call from the Red Sox.

- [commentator 1] Crazy story, this guy.

- [commentator 2] It is.

[commentator 1] Kid had some

injuries, to say the least.

[commentator 2] He's

happy to be here.

[commentator 1] Yeah, he retired

in 2017, became a carpenter.

[Booser] Make a play,

Pablo. Make a play, Pablo.

You a dirty dog, baby. That's

what I love about you. Attaboy!

[crowd applauds]

Minor Leagues, Major Leagues,

I still have a Red Sox uniform.

I thank God each

and every morning

that I wake up and get

to put the uniform on.

[Cora] It was fun to

watch you compete.

- That was fun to watch.

- Yes.

Just take that step forward of

that confidence in yourself, um,

and… and you'll be

where you need to be.

And the phone call happens at the…

You never know what's gonna happen.

- Thank you.

- [Cora] Yeah, thank you.

[director] To get to the big

leagues, what has to happen?

[smacks lips] Um…

You know, I've… I've never been

there, so I'm not really sure.

[director] If that call were to come,

what would that be like for you?

[Booser scoffs softly]

I don't know. I've imagined

it about five million times.

[ethereal, expectant

music plays]

[music fades out]

[stadium chatter fades in]

[Will] What is going

on here at Fenway Park?

The Red Sox just have not played great

in this season-opening homestand.

[Casas] What's up, fellas? How we

doing? What's up, Marky? Let's get it.

f*ck yeah.

[Will] Fenway can be

such an imposing place,

intimidating for

opposing players.

But recently, the Sox just

have not made it that way.

And that's something that's

really bothering Alex Cora.

[Cora] Attaboy!

[Joe] Down the left field

line, gonna get down for a hit.

- [crowd cheering]

- [Cora] No, no, no, no, no, no, no!

Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo!

[Joe] That's a standup

double for Triston Casas.

[crowd cheers]

- [Cora] That's all right.

- [clapping]

[cheering subsides]

- [commentator] Oh no.

- [Will] There goes Casas.

Here's the throw to third. He

is gonna be out at third base.

"Oh no" indeed.

- [in Spanish] What did he do?

- I don't know.

He ran early. He got his

leg out and went for third.

[Will in English] Cora's face tells

you everything you need to know.

- What was going on there?

- [fans boo]

[scoffs] That is just not even in

the galaxy of a good baseball play.

[Casas] f*ck, man.

[commentator] These are the plays

that keep managers up at night.

[Casas panting]

[Cora in Spanish] We really think we're

ghosts running the bases sometimes.

[Devers] Yeah.

I can't tell him anything because

he knows he f*cked up, you know?

- [Devers] We're making such stupid errors.

- [Cora] By trying to do too much.

You know, we have to stay calm.

We're fine.

[in English] Slow it

down. Slow it down.

[in Spanish] Let

the game happen.

[Joe] Swing and miss at

an off-speed pitch away,

and the ball game is over.

[man] Get a bullpen, Cora!

[Will in English] There's the

micro-level stuff here tonight.

A couple plays that probably

should've been made that weren't.

All of it recedes to the news that

Garrett Whitlock leaves the game

after four innings

with an oblique injury.

I tell you, that is not good,

with Pivetta already down.

These injuries are just

getting out of control.

Don't you think this bullpen

could just for, at least, maybe

like a week, use a refresher?

Somebody like Cam

Booser, Zack Kelly,

who continue to

be pitching well.

[Joe] I think so. They could use

a body here tomorrow, I think.

[tense, pensive music plays]

[Casas] I feel, as a player,

the best thing that I do is

turn the page really quickly.

When I go into the back of the

clubhouse and clean off my cleats,

that's my way of cleaning

off whatever happened

and flushing it and moving on.

This walk home is like my favorite part

of my day, every single day though.

I hope I get recognized enough

to where I can't do this anymore.

[producer] Do you ever get

nervous walking home alone?

No, not particularly, 'cause

I'm… I'm 6'5", 250 pounds,

so anybody who,

you know, is gonna mess with

me is gonna have a problem.

Boston is a… it's an old

city with a young crowd.

The bars get filled, then,

you know, people step out,

but I'm deciding to go

to sleep early tonight.

Hopefully it pays off and I get

on base three times tomorrow.

But, yeah, for right now,

uh, the bars and the clubs, they're,

uh… they're not going anywhere.

You know, they'll… they'll be

here when I'm done playing,

long after I'm done playing.

I'm definitely not saving money

by living in a hotel, you know.

I just, uh…

I like somebody coming in

and cleaning my room for me.

I like not having to worry about

utilities, water, and furniture,

and… and Wi-Fi, and TVs.

And then there's the

commitment aspect of it,

which, in reality,

we're so expendable.

We're so replaceable that

I could be sent down.

I could be optioned

to Triple-A. Um…

So we don't… I feel I

need, especially me,

that I don't have, you

know, a ton of job security.

I feel like I need a

little bit of flexibility…

- [card reader beeps]

- …uh, in my living space.

- [Cora] How's it going?

- [boy] Team's doing good this year.

- [Cora] So far, so good, right?

- Yeah.

- World Series this year.

- [Cora] Ugh. That would be great.

But we gotta win it. It's

not getting there, right?

- You got a good team this year.

[Cora] They're playing

well. Playing well.

[commentator 1] New

second baseman, Alex Cora.

Joey's younger little brother.

His first Major League at-bat.

Strike three called.

Cora is the perfect example

of a non-star player

taking his experience

as sort of a journeyman,

who bounced around to a number of

teams, wasn't always a starting player,

but absorbed a lot

in his playing career

and put that to great

use as a manager.

[commentator 2]

Ground ball to short.

[commentator 3] Hurried

and Cora throws it away.

[Casas] He knows what it's

like to be on the bench.

He knows what it's like

to be in a starting role,

so he's the kind of guy

that has perspective.

He was that guy that put his

teammates before himself.

- C'mon, kid. Love you. Keep going.

- [Duran] Love you too.

He's become like another

father figure to me.

[in Spanish] He's a

very good manager.

I feel comfortable with him,

especially because he's Latino.

He has given me the trust I need

so I'm able to demonstrate

what I can give to the team.

How does it go? "The Lord squeezes

you, but he doesn't strangle you."

- Just like that.

- But, f*ck, don't squeeze so hard!

Damn!

[in English] There's so many

Spanish-speaking players across the game,

to be able to have your manager

that you can kind of just open up to

and speak in your own language,

that really does help.

[Peter] Alex finds a way

to relate to everybody,

to understand

their insecurities.

He understands what it is

to fail 60, 70% of the time.

That's the nature of baseball,

'cause you're always

in a losing percentage.

It's such a human game.

[Refsnyder] In every article I

read, it says AC's not coming back.

[player chuckles]

- Every article.

- [Andrew] It's been flooding my timeline.

- [player] No pressure.

- [Refsnyder] Enjoy…

Enjoy the last few months of

Alex Cora 'cause he's gone.

[all chuckling]

[Cora] I do believe,

at this level,

it's about managing

people here, right?

And if you don't connect

with them, it's hard.

So that's what I try to

do, just manage people.

He's young. He's bilingual.

The young bilingual skipper

has the Red Sox in great shape.

[Cora chuckles]

On the business side of it, I

gotta do a good job, you know?

Because, uh…

I'm in the last year of my contract,

and, um, all that stuff comes into play.

[player groans]

Ownership and upper management has

always been infatuated with Alex Cora.

I mean, they love him.

This guy got suspended for a

year by Major League Baseball

for his involvement in

a sign-stealing scandal

with the Houston Astros.

[reporter] Before

heading to Boston,

Cora served as bench coach

for the Houston Astros

during their 2017

World Series victory.

[commentator] The Houston

Astros are world champions.

[reporter] The League concluding

that during the championship season,

the Astros placed a camera

in the outfield stands

that could see the

catcher's signal

and would then relay that

information to the batter

by banging on this garbage can.

The commissioner's report identified

Cora as the potential mastermind.

[man 1] Official punishment has now

come down from Major League Baseball.

Alex Cora has been suspended

for all of the 2020 season.

[Cora in Spanish] It was something

that, in the moment, was addictive,

to be honest.

What we did was addictive.

It started one day,

and we just kept at it.

We never thought it

would come to this.

My suspension, you know what?

Well deserved.

What we did was wrong.

They took me out of the game.

It hurt me.

2020 was difficult, you know?

And I was at my lowest.

[Sean in English] In 2020, when

all of this stuff comes out,

and it becomes obvious that his hands

are dirty from this 2017 season,

they can't wait

to bring him back

when his suspension is up and

he's eligible to work for a team,

and they do.

[Sam] A huge welcome back.

Welcome home to Alex.

When the Red Sox brought him back

in… in 2021 after he was suspended,

he was very open, talking

about his mistakes.

I made a mistake. I

still love the game.

I still love what I do.

I'm not proud of it,

I'm not happy about it,

but we have to move on.

He took the heat for it.

He didn't try to push it under the

rug. He still doesn't to this day.

[man 2] Alex, you're a cheater!

[Cora] There's a reputation, and,

obviously, uh, I got hit hard.

That was five years ago, bro.

Yeah.

[Cora] But, uh, I think

the last three years,

I have been able to stand

up and keep moving, right?

[Joe] A rainy day at Fenway.

Really a cold and miserable day.

[Will] It's definitely been

a tough, tough homestand,

the longest one of the year.

Well, the injuries

have piled up too.

Tyler O'Neill over there, who

has gone on the seven-day IL.

Obviously, Nick Pivetta

trying to work his way back,

but Garrett Whitlock went

on the IL as well this week.

Been a tough stretch.

and it's 3-1, Cleveland.

[Will] Real struggle for

Jacques in Spring Training.

Now, he finds himself, and

the Red Sox find themselves,

in a spot where this game could

get out of hand right here.

[low, tense music plays]

[Joe] 2-1, bases loaded,

one out. Here's the pitch.

And he hits a hard grounder to third.

Reyes has it, fires to second, out.

- Relay to first, safe, and a run scores.

- [crowd groans]

[Andrew] f*ck. We can't

f*cking turn a double play.

[Will] That one beat cost

them the double play.

[tense music continues]

[Will] The rain continues

to fall. The pitch.

Ripped into left field, a base

hit, and another Cleveland run.

Anyhow, the Guardians tack

one on, and they lead by four.

These Guardians are relentless.

They just keep on going.

[Joe] This game is getting to be as ugly

as the weather here today. [chuckles]

Nobody on, ninth

inning, 5-4, Cleveland.

But now it's up to Casas, who's

had an infield hit off first base

and fanned twice

looking and swinging.

Ready for the 1-1 pitch.

- Strike called.

- [fans groan, boo]

[Joe] That was a borderline

pitch on the inside edge and up.

[tense music continues]

[Joe] The two-ball,

two-strike pitch.

Swing and a miss on an inside

cutter, and that's the ball game.

[Casas] Oh my God, man.

[Will] We got Casas up in the last inning,

trailing by a run. He did not deliver.

[Casas] Okay.

- [boy] Triston! Triston!

- [Casas] What?

[boy] Can I have your autograph?

[Casas] No.

[Joe] The Red Sox complete this

homestand with a record of 3 and 7

after going 7 and 3

in the opening trip.

[Craig] We're gonna option you.

You know, less about

what happened today,

and more just kinda, you know,

need for… for some arms came in.

Ate up some… some outs for us,

which is really important. Uh…

But appreciate you going out there

and… and sucking down some outs for us.

Um, I think you got a good

idea of what you need to do.

Obviously, you'll get with Bails

and the rest of the group, um,

and… and keep working.

the mental side of the game was

something I really struggled with.

His head is f*cking spinning

right now. It's gotta be.

I had some things going on

in my own life off the field

that I might've brought

to the field a little bit.

[expectant guitar music plays]

his first Major League pitch.

and he stops there

with a triple.

In high school,

he pitched angry.

Like if he missed by just a

little bit, it would affect him.

[Shane] There was probably

a lot of self-doubt.

- [Cora] Wow.

But he never gave up.

[crowd cheers]

[Will] McCutchen down hacking,

and he collects his first K.

Yeah, Boos!

When I retired from the game, I

addressed all the off-the-field issues.

[Will] Friendly hop for

Dalbec as the run comes in,

and he g*ns down to first base

for out number two.

[Booser] I'd wrapped my identity

up so much into the game

that when I kinda started to find

my identity away from the game,

I found a lot of peace.

- [player] Attaboy.

- Good play, Boos!

[Booser] And so, that helped me

with the mental side of things.

[Will] Oh. Triolo with half a

swing, gobbled up by Valdez.

He'll get him, and the Red

Sox are in the win column.

They beat the

Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-1.

Life on the road continues to

be awfully good for the Red Sox.

[expectant music continues]

[Wong] Congrats, man. Congrats.

- Not a bad first one to get, huh?

- I had to give it up at some point, right?

No, I'm talking about McCutchen.

- Oh. Oh, yeah. That was pretty cool.

- First punchy.

[Booser] When I was away from the game,

one of the things that I missed most

was the competitive side of it.

I've really fallen in

love with the journey

and the grind of the game.

Those are things that I

just took for granted,

having the opportunity to play

this game each and every day.

[stirring music plays]

You deserve it. You deserve it.

[Booser] Both of my sisters,

my mother, and my father,

through their love and

through their support,

I was able to put one foot

in front of the other.

helping me get back to who I truly am

and helping me realize the

type of man that I should be

and that I wanna be.
