[thwack]

[whoosh]

[wind gusting gently]

[melancholy music plays]

[Gawain] Tristan.

I can't believe he and his partner
really did take all 18 points.

[Todoin] Congratulations.

- The better team won.
- [footsteps]

- [Todoin grunts]
- [tense music plays]

[gasps]

[Todoin grunts angrily]

- [softly] Dammit!
- [Gawain grunts, pants]

Hey, wait!

What was that?

You don't have the courtesy
to shake an opponent's hand?

Aah!

[grunts]

[murmurs] Huh?

[tense music continues]

Get out of my way.

[grumbles]

[rapid footsteps approaching]

[pants] Little squirt, you okay?

[huffs] My grandpa always says...

[grumbles]...that it's a small man
who won't shake another man's hand.

That guy's a real jerk!

[music softens]

So he's their big threat.

[music fades out]

[descending squeak]

RISING IMPACT

EPISODE 19: THE DARK NOBLEMAN

The time has come to announce
the final results of the team competition.

- [Bridget sobs]
- Third place goes...

...to the American school, with 12 points.

Second place to the Japanese school,
with 16 points.

And first place to the British school,
with 26 points.

[Gawain] That b*stard.

[sobbing] Dammit!
I still can't believe it!

- How could we have lost?
- [fists pound]

And after we worked so damn hard!

[crying]

[Bilford] Don't cry, Bridget.

[Bridget] Shut up, Bilford.

I may be graduating,

but the rest of you
can try again next year.

And still,

the individual competitions remain.

- [all grunt]
- Let's win for the school.

- [all] Right!
- [Bridget] I'm still mad at you, Bilford.

[Yumiko] Hey! Come on, guys!
Uh, we still took second place.

I think that's pretty good!

And it just means that we've got
something to sh**t for next year!

[chuckles] Isn't that awesome? Huh?

[awkwardly] Huh?

[groaning] Oh... Oh.

You fool.

- [gasps] Liebel.
- [door opens]

[door closes]

[groans]

- [whoosh]
- [thwack]

[tense music playing]

- [thunderous thwack]
- [ball whizzes]

Hey.

- [whoosh]
- [thwack]

So you're just gonna ignore me?

Why d'you go around
treating people that way?

Like not even shaking Todoin's hand!

I wasn't even aware I'd done that.

I'm sorry.

There. Happy now?

- [Gawain scoffs]
- [thwack]

Not if you're gonna say it
like you don't mean it!

Boy, and I thought Lancelot was a grump.

- At least when I play golf, I have fun.
- [thwack]

What's wrong with you?

Your team even won the match

and you look like
somebody died or somethin'!

It's a sport, y'know?
It's supposed to be fun!

[Tristan] For you, maybe.

I'm not looking for fun when I play golf.

My one and only objective
is to be the best there is at this game.

To stand alone
at the very top of professional golf.

[gasps]

The very top?

[Tristan] Now, if there's nothing else,
I'm going to get back to this.

[Gawain grumbling]

[breeze wafting gently]

[birds chirping]

Lancey!

Hey, you wanna come with me?
I'm gonna go into town and go shopping.

- [Lancelot] Why?
- What do you mean, "why?"

We've come all the way to the UK.
Let's have some fun!

- The individual competitions are tomorrow.
- Ah, don't worry.

- What are you doing?
- That's the problem.

Everyone's worrying too much.
We need to take our minds off of it.

That guy.

He's as unfriendly as Lancelot was
when I first met him, maybe even worse.

Hang on a second.
Was he hitting the ball one-handed?

Just think how amazing he must be
with both hands.

What I really wanna do
is buy some earrings.

Ooh, and a new bag. Oh, and maybe a skirt!

[Lancelot] That match
was more than I expected.

The world is a big place, after all.

That might have been the first match
where I ever felt really worried.

But thanks to them,

I was able to draw out abilities
I didn't even know I had.

Now I know I'm capable
of playing better than I ever have before

at the individual competition tomorrow.

[chuckles]

And I know someone else who is too.

[Gawain] Big day tomorrow.
I'm playing against Lancelot.

And I really wanna take down
that man in black.

[straining groan]

Bring it on!

Huh?

Huh?

Really? You can't find Liebel?

That's right. And we both know how he is.

I'm afraid he might feel responsible

for the way
the team competition turned out.

[Gawain grunts]

Don't worry! I'll find him, Ms. Aria!

[pants]

[Aria] I just hope
this won't affect the match tomorrow

for Liebel and Todoin.

[soft koto music playing]

[water lapping gently]

[melancholy music plays]

[sighs]

- [Gawain] Aha! There you are, Liebel!
- [gasps]

Why are you way out here
all by yourself, huh?

[Liebel] Gawain...

Uh.

[Gawain] Hmm?

Quester? What are you doing here?

Well, I... just wanted
to have a word with your friend here.

Who, Liebel?

It's been a while.
Isn't that right, Liebel?

What do you mean? Have we met before?

We have. You're saying
you don't remember me at all?

Well, that's rather insulting.

Sorry. What can I say?
If we've met, I don't remember it.

Now, I'm sorry,
but I'd rather be alone at the moment.

[Gawain] Oh, come on. Stop it.

It's not like you
to act all gloomy and depressed.

It's not? [scoffs]

It's just like me, actually.

I can't help but take it pretty hard
when I let people down like that.

We're not blaming you for what happened
in the school competition.

- That was pretty pathetic though.
- Hey.

I know you were playing
against the best of the Brits,

but still, zero points, Liebel?

[Gawain] Quester!

Don't talk to him like that.

[growls] Everyone has an off day
every once in a while.

Just wait till you see him
when he's on his game.

He's unbelievable!

- [Quester] I know.
- Huh?

Two years ago,
at the Atlantic Rim Junior Cup,

he finished ten strokes ahead of me.

[Gawain] You...
You beat Quester by ten strokes?

[Liebel] The Atlantic Rim Junior Cup?

[gasps]

[crowd applauds]

- [crowd murmuring in admiration]
- [camera shutters clicking]

[poignant piano music playing]

[grumbling]

Huh? Oh, you're the guy
who hit that 300-yard drive on the fifth...

My name is Quester Phoenix,
and you're gonna remember that name!

'Cause the next time we meet,
I'm gonna beat you by ten strokes!

[Liebel] Hmm.

Was that you?

[Quester] That was a tough loss for me.

I was used to
blowing the competition away.

I spent the last two years
practicing and practicing,

so that I'd be ready
to fulfill that promise I made to you.

Now here we finally meet again,

and I find out
you've turned into a miserable coward

who falls to pieces
after losing one match.

[scoffs] I don't even need
to beat you anymore.

[water splashing]

[tinkling music plays]

[Liebel] He's right.

What's wrong with me?

[rousing music plays]

I admit, I might have been
a coward before...

but I'm not like that now,
thanks to Gawain and Ms. Aria.

They got me to believe in myself again.

You'll find out how much I've changed
at the individual competition tomorrow.

Glad to hear it.

Looks like those two years of waiting
will be worth it.

[Gawain] That's the spirit.

You can't let somethin' like that
get you down forever.

Lucky thing you showed up.
I was about to go into another tailspin.

- [chuckles]
- [Liebel] Thanks, both of you.

- [Quester chuckles]
- [music fades out]

[whimsical music plays]

What the heck?

It's like every single shop in town
is closed for some reason.

- [grumbles]
- [Lancelot] It's not like Japan.

Most shops here usually close at 05:00.

If you knew that, why didn't you tell me?

[shrieks]

Oh, what's the point then?
We might as well just go back.

Oh well. Why not?

- Yumiko.
- [dejectedly] Huh?

If you want to, we could...
take a little walk before we go back.

[shocked sputtering]

[Gawain] Not to make a big deal about it,

but I was a little surprised
you guys got shut out.

Well, we weren't in perfect sync,

and the Brits were able
to take advantage of that.

Still, it was like
they weren't even serious.

Especially that guy.

That Tristan guy.

It was like he was just warming up
for the individual competition.

[Quester] He probably was.

[Yumiko] Are you feeling pretty confident
about the competition tomorrow?

I predict you're gonna win it.

Why would you say that?
Don't you want to win it too?

Well, to be honest, I'll be happy
if I can avoid coming in last.

[Gawain] So, Quester, you know that guy?

[Quester] Yeah, he competed
in the Camelot Cup last year,

and the year before that.

And he won both times.

He's the best player
in all of the Camelot academies.

Is that who I think it is down there?

Tristan, the true ace
of the British school.

I wouldn't have expected
to see him in a place like this.

Ms. Aria was worried about me?

Yeah. You had her so worried,
I thought I better find you before she...

[Liebel] Sorry! I've got to get back!

I'm coming, Ms. Aria!

Huh.

Looks to me like he's saying a prayer.

[Yumiko] Yeah. Maybe he's praying
for a big win tomorrow.

Hey, can we go?
This place kinda gives me the creeps.

Maybe we could find
a bite to eat somewhere? Huh?

[tense music drones]

[gasps]

He's intense.

[music building]

[music fades out]

[crickets chirping faintly]

So are you nervous at all
about tomorrow's match?

[laughs]

Nah! It's way too late
to be worried about anything now.

Besides... I've got my ability
to see those flashes.

So even if I'm not the best
at approach shots,

or the greatest putter in the world,

I can make up for all of that
with the power of my driver.

[Quester] He's so single-minded
about perfecting his drive.

More than I ever used to be.

- [Gawain] And you know what?
- Uh.

I've really kinda got you to thank for it.

Being able to hit the ball
that far, I mean.

When you out-drove me
with your iron the other day, I thought,

"Oh boy. The world is full of guys
that are better than me."

"How can I ever get as good as they are,
let alone beat 'em?"

At first, I thought
maybe I could just imitate you,

but there was no way I could do that.

The only way to get better
is to go beyond what you already are.

Once I figured that out,

I could see the flashes
more clearly than ever.

What do you know?

[chuckles]

Looks like my special gift
ended up triggering your special gift.

What gift? You mean like a present?

No.

I'm talking about
what some people call a gift from heaven.

A natural talent.

The kind of unique ability
that you and I have.

[Gawain] Unique ability?

Oh, you mean the thing
where we can see the flashes?

[Quester] Yeah.

When I faced the ball,

I could feel something happening
between my club and it.

And if I committed to that feeling,
I was able to hit the ball incredibly far.

- [crackling]
- [ball pinging]

Once I realized that this meant
the true cores were in perfect alignment,

they became visible as flashes.

And that ability is a gift?

[euphonious instrumental music playing]

[Quester] Hmm?

I get it.

Then is Lancelot's thing a gift too?

Yeah! That's what it has to be!

What is?

You've seen how he can
sink a putt from anywhere.

[gasps]

[Gawain] He can see a glowing line
that shows him the way to the cup.

What? No way.

A gift for sinking putts?

Don't be ridiculous. [grunts]

On second thought... that would explain it.

[clatter echoes]

- [Gawain] Hey, hey, Quester!
- [Quester] Hmm?

So if there's a gift for hitting drives
and a gift for hitting putts,

do you think there's a gift
for hitting approach shots too?

[birds chirping]

[Bentley] I see.

Well...

second place is still better than third.

[Todoin] It's still a loss.

The other pairs did their job
and scored plenty of points.

[muffled] It was our pair that... No.

It was me that let the team down.

I'm ashamed of myself.

Now, now. Don't go putting the blame
all on yourself.

It's not that easy.

And please express my apologies
to everyone there.

- [clamor over phone]
- [Hershey] Give it to me! Gimme the phone!

[Arai] Todoin, it wasn't your fault!

[Hershey] Snap out of it, Todoin!
This isn't like you!

[Arai] Yeah! You're supposed to be
our fearless leader!

- [Kanazono] Not some mopey quitter!
- So get your head together and cheer up!

You lost the battle,
but haven't lost the w*r!

There's still the individual competition!

- [overlapping arguing]
- Didn't you wanna talk to him, Kuromine?

- No, it's okay. I'm good.
- [Hershey yells]

- Stop it! Gimme the phone!
- He knows how I feel.

- [Hershey] Hang in there, Todoin!
- Thank you, guys.

[solemn pensive music plays]

All right, understood.

I got the message.

I guess that's what makes us a team.

[Riser] Hey, Todoin.

Tell Gawain and the others
to give it all they've got tomorrow.

I will.

[suspenseful music plays]

Well, tomorrow's the day.

Huh?

Wanglian?

What's he doing
talking to that British player?

Do they know each other?

[sighs]

I wonder if my sister and I
will ever talk to each other again

like when we were kids.

I want to beat her so badly.

No.

Tomorrow, I have to beat her.

[music fades out]

[birds chirping]

[footsteps]

All right! Another beautiful day for golf!

And I had a nice big poop this morning,
so I'm good to go.

[Aria] They seem to have recovered
from the shock of yesterday's loss.

Good morning. I hope everyone here
had a good sleep last night.

Because today is the day

when we finally come
to the individual competition,

which many consider
to be the main event of the Camelot Cup.

And today's course is a difficult one...

[Gawain] Everybody looks a lot more tense
than they did yesterday.

I've gotta be ready to go
from the very first hole.

I am so pumped!

[farts]

- [Charles groans] I can taste it!
- [James] What died inside you?

[engine rumbling]

Hey, does anybody know where we're going?

We're going to a special course
that's only open for the Camelot Cup.

Don't you listen?

Mr. Merlin explained it a minute ago.

You really don't listen
to what anyone says, do you?

Hey! Hey, guys!
Doesn't this bring back memories?

The three of us
competing against each other?

At the Sword of the Fountain Junior Cup.

Of course.

Who could forget the moment
where fate brought Lance and me together?

Wouldn't it be great if we got to
play a round of golf as a group?

That's not gonna happen.

In this match,
we play golf in groups of three.

A Brit, a Yank,
and someone from our school.

Seven groups of three players
from each campus.

Oh.

[Aria, on mic] Okay, everyone.

Each of you is going to
take a ball from this can.

You'll find that each ball
has a number on it.

Teams will be chosen at random,
not by gender or ability.

[dramatic music plays]

[Gawain] I got a lucky six!

I just hope the man in black
got a lucky six too.

Except for him, it'll be unlucky!

[upbeat music playing]

[grunting cheerfully] Hoo-hoo!

Wow!

Look at the dang tee for the first hole!

[chuckling] Amazing!

Boy, oh boy, oh boy!

What a spectacular way
to start off the competition!

Each player should have drawn
a numbered golf ball on the bus.

Form a group with players
who have the same number.

The first group
will be teeing off in 30 minutes.

Number four here!

Who here has a number seven?

- [Charles] Hey, shrimp.
- [Gawain] Hmm!

- Yeah, tubby?
- Don't call me tubby.

Well, don't call me shrimp.

You're not a number six, are you?
Please say no.

Oh man. You're in my group?

- So I wonder who Lancelot got stuck with.
- [Charles] Hmm...

[both shout]

- [James chuckles]
- Whoa!

Trade teams with me!
You've got all the babes on yours!

[Gawain] Aw, I'm so jealous!

I was really hopin' I'd get a chance
to play with the man in black!

Luck of the draw.

[music fades out]

- [smack]
- [thud]

[tense music plays]

[boy 1] Hey, poor boy.

How long are you gonna keep
trying to play golf with us?

[boy 2] Yeah, if you can't even afford
the uniform, you don't belong here.

- You've got a weird swing too.
- [Tristan groans]

I heard your father's
working three different jobs,

even though he's a sick man,

just so his little boy can afford
to pursue his silly little dream

of playing golf.

Dear me. Working himself to death
to help the likes of you?

- He must be an idiot.
- [Tristan grunts]

But idiocy must be hereditary
in your family, no?

- [all laugh]
- [Tristan grunts]

- [boy 3 groans]
- [boys gasp]

[boy 3 grunts]

[boys gasp anxiously]

You keep your mouth shut... 'bout my dad.

[man] Tristan!

Get over to the hospital right away!

It's your father. He collapsed at work!

[music ends]

Dad! [gasps]

- [breathes heavily]
- Hi, Tristan.

[breathing heavily]

[sighs]

- So are you all right?
- [father] Yeah.

It was just a little dizzy spell,
that's all.

Sorry if you were worried, kid.
So how was your practice then?

[Tristan] I've decided...
I'm going to quit golf.

[father grunts]

What's happened, Tristan?
Are the other kids still picking on you?

[Tristan] It's not that.

I can't stand to see you
doing this to yourself because of me.

It's time I took care of you for a change.

[father] Hmm?

[laughs]

Oh, you have it all backwards.

For me, son,
helping you to pursue your dream

is my whole purpose in life.

So, please,
do your selfish old man a favor.

Don't ever say
you're going to give up golf.

[rousing music plays]

I believe in you, Tristan.
And your coach does as well.

He says you have incredible talent.

[thwack]

You have your own unique way
of hitting the ball.

And if you believe in it, stick to it.

Don't worry about what other people think.

You just keep on doing what you're doing

until you're satisfied with yourself.

[Tristan grunts]

[gasps]

[music stirs]

Dad!

I've been recruited by Camelot Academy!

- [sustained flatline beep]
- [Tristan gasps]

[dramatic sting]

- [murmurs fearfully]
- [beep continues]

D... D... Dad.

[shakily] Why?

[doctor] I told him many times
he was working too hard. [sighs]

But all he seemed to care about,

all he really wanted
was for you to play golf.

[beep fades out]

[Tristan] I'm almost there, Dad.

Soon, I'll pay you back
in the only way I know how.

Watch over me.

[breeze wafts gently]

[girl] Hey.

- [both] Huh?
- You two are number sixes, aren't you?

Yeah, we are.

Oh, good. That's a big relief.

Some of the other groups
looked pretty intimidating.

But now that I see
that one of you's a little kid

and the other one's really out of shape,
I'm not so worried.

- [Gawain] Ooh...
- [Charles] "Out of shape"?

- [theme music plays]
- [lyrics in Japanese]
