"Carcharodon carcharias."
Cannonball!
Satellite tagger ready. Keep
an eye out below, David.
Sharks like to attack their
prey from underneath them.
- What? Why?
- So you don't see them coming.
Chomp!
There's nothing to be afraid of,
David. We're in a solid metal cage.
It's the same thing scientists
use to study sharks.
Why are we doing this again?
There's still so much we don't
know about great white sharks.
They're great. They're sharks.
I think we know enough.
We actually know very little.
We don't know where they
spend most of their time.
Yet. And if we
don't know that...
We don't know how many are left.
Right. Which means we don't know
how much help they need from us.
I think we're the ones that
are gonna need some help.
Don't they eat people?
Only by accident.
How do you accidentally
eat a person?
Because you think they're
something you do eat,
so you accidentally take a bite.
Let me show you.
Jane to Greybeard.
Greybeard? Greybeard!
Let's get the seal decoy in the water,
then keep a lookout for our shark friend.
Are we playing shadow puppets?
Sort of. Remember how I told
you sharks hunt from below?
I will literally never forget.
That's also how
they see their prey.
- Look at that.
- Is that the shape of a seal or a person?
Hard to tell, right? Same for sharks.
They're not trying to hunt people,
they just accidentally bite
the wrong things sometimes.
So we shouldn't be scared?
I'm not a seal. I'm not a seal.
- Jane?
- Where did our decoy go?
It's right above us.
Which means the
shark's right below us.
Tata.
What? It isn't easy
pushing you around in this.
And aren't you a little old
to be playing pretend, huh?
Any sign of her, David?
No, thankfully. And how'd
you know she was a she?
Girl sharks are bigger
than boy sharks.
Quit fooling around, Davey.
Pops needs everything on his grocery
list for his favorite recipe.
Saucy seafood paella
And you know what he's like
when we forget something.
Guess who?
Hey, hon.
Did I put parsley on the list?
Yep.
- And saffron threads?
- Uh-huh.
And remember, bomba rice, not
the rice you got last time.
Bomba, not sticky.
Got it.
Okay, thanks. And if you could be
quick about it, Millie's starving.
Love you.
Love you too.
Come on, bud. We better hurry.
What even are saffron threads?
Sorry, Jane. Mission paused.
Hopefully forever.
But what about getting the tracker
on the Carcharodon carcharias?
Carchara... What now?
Carcharodon carcharias.
It's the scientific name
for a great white shark.
Well, why can't you
just say that then?
It's more fun to use
a scientific name.
You and I have a very
different idea of having fun.
Look, soup's on sale.
Yes, we do.
What? Three for one. This
almost never happens.
Make room, corazoncito.
Come on, come on. Let's go, out.
So, what's this about sharks?
We're trying to tag one so we can
see where they spend their time.
Easy, the ocean.
But where exactly?
Sharks disappear for
huge amounts of time,
- and scientists still don't know why.
- What does it matter?
'Cause they're an apex predator.
Is that another scientific name?
No, apex means they're at the
top of the ocean's food chain.
Without them, none of
their prey gets eaten,
which means they eat too much
and the whole chain falls apart.
Why do you worry yourself
about such things, huh?
'Cause someone has to.
Sharks eat fish, right?
Fish, seals, the
occasional dead whale.
Well, I don't think there are
any dead whales around here,
but there's definitely
a fish section.
Maybe you can find
your shark over there.
Good idea, Tata.
I'll be right back.
Take your time. And let me know
if the tilapia's on sale, huh?
I will.
We're supposed to be looking for
sharks, Greybeard, not poking dead fish.
Use the fish as bait?
I like your thinking.
I can't even read this one.
Let me see.
"Potato chip."
Yeah, nice try, Davey.
That's what you want.
Rice section. Now,
where is the bomba kind?
- Shark!
- Davey. Davey, quiet.
Shark.
What? It was quieter.
Jane, the shark's here.
I know. I used some fresh
fish to get her here.
She's beautiful.
When she comes close, tag her.
What do you mean, no?
Of course she's huge. She's the
world's largest predatory fish.
We need to work on
your sliding skills.
Hi.
Something tells me you're not
happy I'm trying to tag you,
but now I get to see
how fast you can swim.
Greybeard, run!
Jane, where are you? Update.
Trying not to get chomped.
Did you tag her?
No, but I think
I made her angry.
Great, an angry shark.
I'm coming, but I'm
not happy about it.
"Limit of six per customer?"
Can I borrow this?
Fine, David,
but then you have to help
me put some of those back.
'Kay.
- Turn right.
- Got it.
Chomp on this.
That was awesome.
Except the part where
we didn't tag the shark.
What did you two do?
- Research.
- Shark surviving.
Maybe you can survive
a little more quietly.
Yeah, or a lot more.
Look at the mess you've made.
The embarrassment you've caused.
Start cleaning this up now.
"The greatest danger to
our future is apathy."
- What does apathy mean?
- I'm not exactly sure.
It means a lack of
interest or concern.
Like how you're both apathetic towards
quickly cleaning up your mess right now.
Or how people are apathetic
to helping sharks.
I like how you
turned that around.
Let me help you,
Dad, who I love.
People don't help sharks because
they're scary, corazoncito.
No, they're misunderstood.
We shouldn't let things disappear
just because we're scared of them.
People are the apex
predator of the world,
which means it's our job to keep
the chain from falling apart.
Which we're not doing.
She really wants
to save the world.
You're not scary. People just
don't understand you yet.
I'm sorry I failed.
Don't give up.
There's still time.
That's not what he sounds like.
I see.
And the world is
running out of time.
I wish you'd stop worrying
about things you can't change.
But that's just the thing, Tata.
We can change. We just
need to be more interested.
Worrying is not bad if
it makes you do something
to change a thing you
were worried about.
Like that lady you like so much?
Jane Goodall is trying to change
the world and save animals.
That's what I wanna do.
How can I help you?
Sharks are in trouble because
we're overfishing the ocean
and k*lling too many of them.
If we can learn more about how they
live, we can learn how to help save them.
Yes.
That's why you need to tag
one, so you can follow it?
Exactly!
But every time we've
tried, it hasn't worked.
When I try to understand what
someone else is thinking,
I try to think like they think.
Maybe you're thinking
too much like a person.
I don't get it.
Maybe you need to start
thinking like a shark.
Like a shark.
Thank you, Tata.
We'll be right back.
Don't eat me!
Sorry. Is your dad still mad?
He always gets anxious when
shopping for one of Pop's recipes.
He'll get over it.
I think I have an idea
on how to tag our shark.
Does it involve
action and danger?
Yes.
- I'm out.
- What?
Kidding. I'm in, as long
as I'm not in danger.
I'm in danger?
How good are you at
making seal noises?
I'm the best.
Louder?
David.
- I got something in my throat.
- Uh-huh.
So, what's the plan?
Let's seal this deal.
Gotta honk like you mean it.
See anything, Greybeard?
Okay. Let us know
if you see her.
And don't get distracted.
Copy?
Just the fish left.
You still got it.
I'm pretending to be a seal so I
can lure over a great white shark
so my best friend can tag it.
Nice job.
Still no sign of her, Greybeard?
Greybeard, you there?
Greybeard, copy? Over.
Jane?
Maybe if I waddle
around like a seal too?
Greybeard, answer me!
Do you know where
the fish section is?
Greybeard said she's coming!
At least she can't
hunt me from below.
Think like a shark.
Hunt from below.
Got her!
Yeah!
Greybeard.
You couldn't have waited till
we paid for it, Greybeard?
He was hungry.
That's a lot of fish.
Well, Kevin loves
making seafood paella.
What's wrong?
One of the reasons sharks are in trouble
is because we're overfishing the oceans.
No fish, no sharks.
Well, they're not gonna miss
these shrimp, will they?
No, but the fish that eat the shrimp
will, and the seals that eat the fish,
and the sharks that eat the
seals. We're all connected.
It's on your Pop's list.
If they can imagine
saving great white sharks,
then maybe we can
start to imagine
eating some different
things once in a while.
Like not eating
meat once a week,
or making sure the meat you do eat
isn't as bad for the environment.
You know, I think
Pops would agree.
Do you have any
environmentally friendly fish?
Right this way.
How'd these chips get in here?
The satellite tagging signal
is coming in loud and clear.
Where is she going?
Hopefully, we'll find out soon.
Did she circle around us?
No, she's still ahead of us.
There's another one.
- They look smaller than her.
- Which means...
They're boy sharks.
Because girl sharks are
bigger than boy sharks.
This must be where they
meet to have babies.
I don't think anyone's
ever seen this before.
What? My dad said I
could have a treat.
Help save the
great white sharks.
Hold on, Tata.
I'll be right back.
- Where are you going?
- I have to call Carlee Jackson.
Who's that?
She's a marine biologist
who studies sharks.
Didn't we help the sharks?
Yes, but there's
always more we can do.
Okay, but don't be too long,
corazoncito. Dinner will be ready soon.
Okay.
- Carlee.
- Hi. You must be Jane.
Yep. Thanks for meeting with
me and talking about sharks.
No problem. After all the
emails and messages you sent me,
I just... How could I say no?
What are those green
things beside you?
These up here?
So these are shark tags that
I've used out in the field.
We put them on the
fins of the shark,
kind of like a little
earring on their fin.
And we also have our phone
number on the back of these tags.
So, if anyone catches the shark,
they can give us a call and we'll
know where the shark has been.
Actually, let me pull up a video
for you of me shark tagging.
This is a blacktip shark.
And as you can see, we
are measuring the shark.
What's the tube for?
That puts water into the shark's
mouth to make sure it can breathe.
And then we tag the shark.
When we're done with the shark, we
release it right back in the water,
and it swims away
nice and healthy.
When did you first
start liking sharks?
I was about five or six years old,
and I read this book on sharks,
and it just got me
completely hooked.
That's when I knew I wanted to be
a shark scientist when I grew up.
Have you ever swam with a shark?
Let me see if I can
find the video of that.
So I was in Belize, and this video
is me swimming with a nurse shark,
and I was actually
doing research.
David would be very scared if he saw
a shark in the ocean without a cage.
Sharks are actually way more
scared of us than we are of them.
A lot of times when people
are attacked by sharks,
it's by mistake 'cause they
can't see them very well.
So they think they're food, then
they take a bite, and they're like,
"This is nasty," and they swim
away 'cause they made a mistake.
If people see a shark in the
ocean, what should they do?
I always stress to keep your
distance, and no touching.
It's really important to replace the
fear of sharks with respect of sharks.
How can we help them?
There's a lot of things that young
people can do to help sharks.
One of those is to eat
sustainable seafood.
Make sure it's coming from a place
that's very environmentally friendly
and isn't overfishing
certain populations.
There are some young
people going even further,
getting involved in programs
like Sharks 4 Kids, that helps get kids
more involved in shark conservation.
There are even youth environmental
advocates, like Dyson Chee.
He's trying to get plastic
pollution out of the water
just to overall help our oceans.
I also started my
own organization
Minorities In Shark Sciences, with three
other Black women shark-scientists.
And we've never seen anyone that
looked like us in this field,
so we wanted to make sure no
one else felt like we did.
Our goal is to just bring more
diversity into shark science
because the more brains we
have working on shark science,
the more things we'll discover.
And that overall
helps protect sharks.
I love that you're getting
more people to save the sharks.
Jane, dinner's ready!
- Sounds like you have to go.
- I wish I didn't.
But I will do all I
can to help the sharks.
- Thanks for talking to me, Carlee.
- Bye, Jane.
Don't forget, sharks
are "fin-tastic."
David will love that one. Bye!
Jane, Greybeard's
eating your dinner!
Greybeard!
