And here is Fitzpatrick, one

of the smallest in stature here this week.

Matt Fitzpatrick is one

of the most accomplished British golfers

we've seen in a long time.

He really burst onto the scene at age 18

when he won arguably the biggest

amateur tournament in the world.

Matthew Fitzpatrick,

the U.S. Amateur champion.

He became the first Englishman in, like,

a hundred years to win that tournament.

He looked like he was

about 12 years old when he won.

He's done it again!

Despite all his amateur success,

despite his success in Europe

Matt still has a gaping hole

in his resume

When he walks onto the tee, the reaction

from the crowd is almost like,

"That guy is tiny!"

Matt's not like these big

alpha-male golfers from the States.

You are a tosser.

He's not 6'2". He's not 220.

Someone who hits it ridiculously far.

He definitely has an aura,

a swagger about him.

Do I believe in myself?

Absolutely.

Is it hard to win a PGA TOUR event?

Yeah, it's very difficult.

But if I'm prepared,

I feel confident

going into every tournament.

Well, even if I'm not prepared, I think

I'm still confident. But

You're playing against

the best players in the world

on the PGA TOUR.

So I need to prove to myself

that I can beat them.

Looking for that breakthrough win

over here in the States

for the first time.

Some guys go their entire career

without winning on the PGA TOUR.

And I think with Matt Fitzpatrick,

until he can unlock something else,

that might not turn into a victory.

I've been in Sheffield

probably for a week now

and not been recognized once.

I told you, nobody knows

who I am in Sheffield.

That's not true.

It must be nice to come back

and to be at home,

- since you started living in the States.

- I like being in Sheffield.

Yeah, like, I come home for

you know, to see family, to see friends.

I feel like I've lived

a very normal life growing up.

And my dad was a corporate bank manager.

My mom worked in insurance, and I feel

like my parents kind of instilled in me

that hard work was quite important.

And I think

that's why golf suits me so well.

If I hit 1,000 ba*ls, it doesn't always

mean you're gonna play well,

but I feel like if you work hard in golf,

you're gonna get the rewards.

Yeah, they're in a box.

how far I hit it when I was ten years old.

Since I was young, probably 14 or 15,

I've always wrote down

what shots I've hit, how far, what club.

But since you were 15?

It's true. I can show you 7,000 shots,

if people want to see that.

I'm, like, always, always, always pushing

to be better.

And the analytics show me,

in black and white,

where I need to improve.

Massive tee shot on the 16th.

Among the top 30

in strokes gained off the tee

That is just pounded.

Ever since the start of the year,

I've, you know, consistently, slowly been

adding length to my game

and it's made a big difference.

You've seen the work he's been

doing to get that length you talked about.

He was working

on speed training,

swinging some weighted clubs

as fast as I've ever seen

anybody swing them.

To give myself a chance

of winning the PGA TOUR,

and to compete with the big guys out

there, I knew I needed to add distance.

Well, it's paying off.

He's got four top-10s

in his last six starts.

Nobody works harder in

professional golf than Matt Fitzpatrick.

It's just the truth.

But it's one thing to play well

on Thursday or Friday or even Saturday,

but once the pressure starts building,

once the lights get brighter,

once all the fans start

to congregate around your group,

that's when you really have to prove

that you can handle it.

And not everyone can.

Matt is one of my closest friends.

We went

to school together at Northwestern.

And, uh, I saw him in the dining hall,

I walked up to him, like,

"I know who you are."

I think he was feeling a little lonely.

Being from, like, England,

he didn't really know anybody.

People think my job is just tweeting.

He's one of these kids

who was consumed by golf from a young age.

And I remember

we went home for Christmas break,

and I got a text being like,

"I'm not going back. I'm gonna turn pro."

And he becomes

the number one junior in England.

When it comes to golf,

it's all business, all the time.

He's very, very serious about his career.

I think more serious, and I think

the older British guys would say,

a lot more serious than they ever were.

I need Matt to get hammered

at my wedding so I can see him dance.

- I've never seen Matt dance.

- Yeah.

they don't know what it's like.

to close out a tournament.

One bad swing, one bad shot,

We start with huge news

from the world of golf

as two-time major champion

Dustin Johnson revealed

he has resigned from the PGA TOUR

in order to compete in the Saudi-funded

LIV Tour Golf Invitational Series.

Dustin, you've won,

at last count, $74 million

just on the PGA TOUR.

I've done pretty well out there

for the last 15 years,

but, you know, this is something that

I thought was best for me and my family.

Breaking news,

the PGA TOUR Commissioner, Jay Monahan,

has said there will be disciplinary action

against 17 members

who teed off in the first LIV Golf event

outside of London.

The following players are all banned

from playing on the PGA TOUR,

including the likes

of Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson.

LIV is being talked about

kind of everywhere now.

It's just, like, a stark reminder of how

dramatic and how big this thing has been.

Everywhere I go, at the game last night

here in San Francisco,

people are talking about

LIV versus the PGA.

This is an opportunity that gives me

the most balance in my life.

We all agree that when Phil Mickelson says

this gives him

"the most balance in my life,"

he means money, right?

I don't feel like I was really

any different than I am today. Just

and, you know, I'm very proud of it

and always will be. And

You know, obviously, now,

I've taken a kind of a different step

in my in my life and career.

We haven't talked about last week.

How was it?

I'm so bummed I couldn't be there,

but I want to hear about it.

- Behind the scenes.

- For me, I enjoyed it.

They had music playing on the range,

which was nice.

It just created a little different vibe.

I felt like the fans enjoyed it.

- I just don't think they care.

- It's good for golf.

The decision to join LIV,

I mean, it

You know, it finally just came down to,

you know, the offer that they made me.

For me, it was playing less,

making more money.

Pretty simple.

If someone offered anyone a job,

doing the same thing

they're already doing,

but less time at the office

and they're gonna pay them more,

pretty sure

you're gonna take it.

I mean And something's

wrong with you if you didn't.

I think a lot of people

thought the event in London,

there'd be nobody there.

Things change. Things evolve.

How was your flight out?

Thinking about the kids. Last time

we were watching Little Mermaid,

and they told me to stop singing.

They were like,

"Mom, we really want to hear it."

I was like, "What are you afraid of?"

They're special kids, that's for sure.

It's cool.

I don't think that Dustin would ever make

a bad choice for his children.

And people have to understand,

at the end of the day,

that's who he chose this for.

Of course, I get

I get what everyone's saying,

but my dad, being a hockey player

I'm sure, as a kid,

there were times when I'm like "Why does

my dad have to play on my birthday?"

This is about Dustin and the kids and me

and taking care of us

and being there with us.

Do you think people doubt you

because of LIV?

I don't really care.

We're gonna go sh**t some hoops.

I am awful at basketball.

Oh!

Wow, Dustin, you're the best athlete here.

Okay.

No, best golfer, not best athlete, okay?

It's good to

It's good to have some kicks.

I know I'm one

of the best golfers in the world.

I think I've proven it

over a long period of time.

When I show up to a major,

I mean, I'm there to win.

And they can have their own opinion.

For me, personally,

I feel like my reputation

as a golfer's already kind of set,

so I don't think

there's anything to prove.

Ooh!

- All day long.

Everyone expected Phil. Everyone expected

some of the older European guys

at the tail end of their career.

But when Dustin Johnson made the move

to LIV, it was kind of the turning point.

And they're slowly pluckin' off players.

The PGA TOUR has still managed to keep

the core intact, like the best young guys.

You know, Rory hasn't left or Scottie

or Collin Morikawa and Matt Fitzpatrick.

But it's it's got a lot more momentum

than I ever thought it would.

The PGA Championship I just

never felt like I played well that day.

Felt off from the first tee shot.

It's difficult to take because I feel like

I've worked so hard to be there.

Yeah, it's definitely a tough one.

Yeah, I think some guys

do doubt themselves. Yeah.

I think when you're knocking on the door

for so long and it doesn't open,

it's tough to, you know, keep

doing what you're doing.

But I think you got to, you know,

figure out what went wrong,

why did it go wrong, and start again.

For me, it's straight to the analytics,

straight to the numbers.

We create these score sheets, effectively,

where, you know, we're tracking

club head speed, ball speed,

whether I hit it short side or not.

I know the work that I'm doing is right.

I never thought about, you know,

suddenly changing my approach.

When Sunday comes around

and I'm in the mix,

I definitely feel like that I can play

the shots under pressure when I need to,

and I can have that chance again,

and I definitely believe in myself.

- How are you?

you beat yourself up more than you should.

instead of just moping around,

it was hard at work

and "I'm going to win the next one."

- Going back, and I'm going to the gym.

but I'm always interested in when guys

make that jump, what that feels like.

You'll make mistakes.

It's the mental strength from here on in.

Why is he such a good putter?

I used to beat him at putting

when I was younger, so he didn't like it.

He just works incredibly hard.

No searching for club-head speed here.

Sheer power.

Look, in any sport, size matters.

Sprinters are bigger,

swimmers are taller,

golfers are bigger and stronger,

but there's some guys

who are so world-class

that they can still compete

at the highest level of golf,

and Fitz has always just been

the consummate professional.

Fitzpatrick needs to make

something happen here.

Wow.

He hits it further than DJ.

That was pretty good.

It takes a lot of hard work

and a lot of confidence under pressure

to hit shots with that kind of speed.

And it seems to be paying off.

Yeah, he's very competitive.

He has that altar boy look of being,

you know, a lot younger than his years

and quite softly spoken

and, you know, quite a nice guy,

but he's got an edge about him.

He's got a bit

of extra grit inside that,

you know, he likes to beat certain players

and, you know, you have

to have that in you to succeed.
