unlocked something at the Zurich

because, just one week later,

there he is at the Wells Fargo,

blowing away the field and
winning in classic Rory fashion.

You know, going into the
next major of the year

feeling really
good about myself.

because that's all he's needed

to flip the switch and
start winning majors again.

He's clearly in
major-winning form.

his first few majors,

it felt like he would

It's a heartbreaking thing to watch him
come so close again and again and again.

beautiful part about the game,

opportunity to do better.

Where do I start?

A unique, one-of-a-kind
character in our game.

What I can say about me being different
is that everybody is different out there,

in their own little way.

think of this style?

[Zuël] When he came out of college, he
had this nickname of "The Scientist."

and wants to know
everything about everything.

[Bryson] That's all a transition
of mechanics produced,

and then proprioception
reproduces.

way that he thinks about it.

[Bryson] I went down
the physics route,

trying to figure out anything I could to
have a distinct advantage in the game.

I wasn't afraid to take risks.

[Rapaport] In 2020, he
embarked on this crazy beef-up.

He came back from the off
season and was like the Hulk.

[Bryson] My ultimate goal is
to get as strong as I can,

and I don't know
what that weight is.

[Balionis] The things that he was
doing did translate to him winning

a major championship.

[Rapaport] Bryson's win at the U.S. Open
was pretty transformative for the sport.

There was some worry,
had he "broken" golf?

Had he figured out that, like,
"If I just get really strong

and hit this really far, is
nobody gonna be able to beat me?"

Oh, that's nice. I love that.

[Dethier] Bryson's golf game
is best known for his driver.

- I'll hit one hard for y'all.
- Hell yeah.

Yeah, that's nice. Whoo!

[Dethier] Rory McIlroy is the only top guy
that can almost hang with him off the tee.

I think, you know,
scientist to jock,

I think there's still more
scientist than jock in there.

one's ever tried this.

people don't like Bryson.

And one person that doesn't

Aside from whatever impact
it had on his personal life,

it was just another thing.

No one cares about your divorce
unless you've won majors.

That's life.

The more success you have, the more
people care about your personal life.

There's parts of my life that I

I've always tried to be
protective of my loved ones

from people that
have ill intentions.

wake-up call for me

to say, "Let's just focus on
the golf for a little bit."

World number one golfer
Scottie Scheffler arrested…

[reporter 2] Scottie
Scheffler's been arrested

in wild scenes just hours before
the start of the PGA Championship.

[commentator] Well, this is certainly
not how we expected Friday morning

at the 106th PGA
Championship to unfold.

I mean, we were just, like, in shock.
Like, wait, what's going on here?

[Tom] I'm warming
up. And all I see

is my friend, handcuffed,
walking to a police car.

[Justin] I woke up.
My agent called me.

So it was a pretty quick
wake up, I'd say. [chuckles]

You know, I'm feeding my kid breakfast,
and I'm like, "This can't be real."

[Balionis] This news
felt like a prank.

We all had the same
response at the same time.

I thought it was fake.

I thought it was fake news.

No chance this was real.

This has to be some kind of a
spoof, or they got the wrong guy.

[Balionis] It was
just, "How? What? Why?"

I think there was just so
much confusion around it

because it's Scottie Scheffler
we're talking about! [laughs]

[handcuffs click]

[Scottie] I was freaking
out because I went

from driving into
the golf course

to a jail cell, and I
still don't really know

how that happened, exactly.

[officer] Go have a seat.

I don't think it ever
really felt real.

I'll be honest. I didn't think
this was ever a position I'd be in.

[officer] Usually,
people never do.

We were right in front of this as
it unfolded 50 feet away from us.

That's correct.

- [reporter] And is this from your phone?
- [reporter 2] Yes.

The only people that were being
allowed even close to the gate,

we were told, were players.

So Scheffler, essentially, was
trying to enter Valhalla Golf Club.

He pulled into the left
median to try to go around.

A police officer attempted
to stop Scheffler.

Scheffler continued
to drive his vehicle.

I understand how it happens.
I completely understand.

I have driven past security.
I have flashed my badge.

It's chaos, especially
when it's dark.

[reporter] He
attempted to proceed.

The police officer began
to yell obscenities at him.

The police officer then
latched himself to the vehicle.

At that point, the police
officer took out his flashlight

and started to hit the vehicle,

uh, demanding that Scheffler
get out of the car.

[Joel] At some point,
cooler heads prevailed.

But I think I was just shocked
at how long it carried on.

- [officer] Nothing to drink?
- [Scottie] Mouthwash.

[officer] Just mouthwash, okay.

[Scottie] I try not to drink too much
before I go play golf at 8:00 a.m.

[reporter] The officers involved, we
don't believe, had any idea who this was.

[reporter 2] Did not.

[officer] I assume you're pretty
good if you're playing in the PGA.

[Scottie] I'm all right, yeah.

[officer] Is Tiger as good as
they say he is? Or is that…

[Scottie] He's pretty dang good.

You know, actually being
cuffed in the back of a car

and, you know, a mugshot…

[Rapaport] "Free Scottie"
started trending right away.

There were all these T-shirts.

I was talking to Teddy. "Is
he okay? How's he doing?"

At the end of the day,
like, he's a great golfer.

But he's my friend. I
just want him to be safe.

[reporter] Scheffler has been charged with
second degree as*ault of a police officer,

third degree criminal
mischief, and reckless driving.

You know, it was just nuts.

But he handles himself in
stressful situations so well.

I've seen it. I've walked with him. I
mean, the guy was in jail stretching.

Who does that, right?

[officer] I didn't know you were the
number one in the world right now.

You're too casual to be the
number one player in the world.

[Scottie] I think that's why
they're so surprised I got arrested.

You should've been the
one with a police escort.

What are you talking about?

I was just glad that Scottie was okay
and was able to play the tournament.

It didn't cross my mind that
it would do anything for me,

apart from maybe
change my tee time.

[reporter] Scottie, any
comment on what happened?

It was a chaotic situation
and a big misunderstanding,

and, um, I can't… can't comment
on any of the specifics of it,

so I feel like y'all are
gonna be disappointed,

but I did spend some time
stretching in a jail cell.

That was a first for me.

Yeah, I was fortunate to be
able to play some golf today.

[crowd] Scottie!

[commentator] A couple hours ago,
we really, truly were not sure

we would see that swing

After a morning probably unlike any
he's ever had in his entire life,

In Scottie fashion, he
played a great round of golf,

and that's Scottie.

most unshakable athlete on the planet.

happened, but thankfully in the game,

resulted in him being this
very controversial figure,

and I don't think he really wanted
that. He was not enjoying being hated.

I was one of Bryson's
biggest haters,

and I feel so guilty about that
after getting to really know him

and seeing a whole different side of him,
and so I learned a really big lesson,

that what you see on social
media isn't the full story.

be the 225th major champion

and maybe the most
different of them all.

[Dethier] Bryson's career hit a
peak when he won the 2020 U.S. Open.

[commentator 2] And Bryson DeChambeau
is indeed a U.S. Open champion.

coming up with his mom and dad.

has had health problems,

had a kidney transplant
a few years ago.

[Dethier] But he's had
some hard times since then.

On the course, he's battled injuries,
and off the course, he lost his father.

And I think he's gone through a
process of reevaluating everything.

He shared his loss
with the world,

and that opened himself up

in ways that the world
really hadn't seen before.

[Bryson] You realize the frailty
of life and how precious it is,

and it takes time to get, you
know, things back on track.

[Wilson] After the
loss of his father,

Bryson really started
engaging with the fans more

and found a way to
reinvent himself.

[Bryson] Most golfers are
taught just "be a robot,"

and what YouTube golf has
showed me is that "entertain."

You can just be yourself.

And I can be myself, exactly.
And I like entertaining.

It's fun for me to do.
I've always been that way,

but I've actually tried to
suppress it for a long, long time

'cause that's the way I thought Tiger
was, the way I thought everybody was.

Until I realized that I
can't be somebody else.

I gotta be myself.

- [man] You wouldn't cheat, would you?
- [man 2] I don't think he can.

[Zuël] And so now we're seeing
the more unfiltered Bryson.

[Bryson laughing]

He's really let the fans in
through his YouTube channel.

[Rapaport] Collabing with
politicians and celebrities.

Longest hitter by far.

[Rapaport] Expanding golf's influence
to really reach new heights.

[Bryson laughs] Let's

and doing really fun challenges.

the modern golfer.

He doesn't spend his days
going out and playing 36 holes.

He beats ba*ls at the range,
and he obsesses over content.

[Bryson] Being able to entertain the
fans is what we're all here to do.

And I think that's what's
the most important thing.

There's this authenticity to him which
I think was misunderstood before.

People got to see him be
the golf nerd that he is.

watch the transformation.

He is growing the
game, and he's fun.

[Rapaport] Kids love him.

Not because they grew up watching
him win golf tournaments necessarily,

but mostly because they
watch him on YouTube.

He's leveraged social media into
now a completely new fan base.

The public's done
a 180 on Bryson.

I think we really saw it at the
Masters and at the PGA Championship.

There were guys in
contention with big names.

He was the crowd
favorite. Make no mistake.

In my opinion,

he's the most popular golfer
this side of Tiger Woods,

and that was not the case
three or four years ago.

[reporter] People are now
calling you "The People's Champ."

- [Bryson chuckles]
- [reporter] What do you make of that?

I haven't truly cried yet. I don't
want this to be the time I cry.

The support's been overwhelming.

I don't know what else to say. It's
with complete thanks and gratitude.

[Rory] Bryson is exactly what
the game of golf needs right now.

I would certainly like the opportunity
to play against him a little more often

if… if I could. Um…

You know, he's made the game of
golf more exciting this year.

If you would've asked players
a number of years ago,

I've sort of looked at the world

the money talk in… in golf.

They just wanna watch good golf

and watch people compete
against each other,

This year, it's set up to

It's the first major that I won,

there, which was really cool,

meant a lot to me.

I'd love to get my name
on that trophy again.

Obviously, getting my hands on
a fifth major has taken a while,

but I'm more confident than ever
that I'm… that I'm right there,

that I'm as close
as I've ever been.

[Dethier] Rory's still playing
golf at a really high level.

And coming into the U.S. Open,
he's pairing that with the news

that he and his wife are
calling off their divorce.

Whatever was going on,

reaching that resolution,

it clearly gave him
some sense of peace.

If it was up to her, she wouldn't
move to England straightaway,

but she definitely wants
to spend more time there.

Today, the putter is
really cooperating.

And it could not
come at a worse time.

allowed me to calm down

and be comfortable
in my own skin

and enjoy the moments 'cause
it's not gonna be here forever.

No matter what happens

I got a great life outside
of the game of golf,

and taking that perspective has
definitely enlightened me a little bit

and allowed me to play
a little more free.

I think missing that

I feel like that…

let Bryson back in
to the tournament.

If you treat it as so binary as
winning is good and not winning is bad,

it's a career of t*rture.

As crushing of a defeat
that I've had in golf,

it was probably the toughest finish
to a tournament I've ever had.

So I probably just did everyone a
favor by… by getting out of there.

I didn't wanna speak to anyone,
didn't wanna see anyone.

I just wanted to get on
the plane and go home.

[Zuël] I personally
loved Rory's Irish exit.

I think it shows us
how much he cares.

Wasn't that the question mark?
Does Rory still have the fire?

Irish exit says yes!

If it was a boxer, if it was
a footballer, would we care?

No. We wanna see that passion.

and so I love seeing

passed a couple years ago,

me the person I am.
