01x09 - Desert Island

Post by bunniefuu »

I'm Bear Grylls

I've been to the top of Mount Everest

And crossed the oceans
frozen Arctic.

Now my challenge is to be abandoned
near an island in the Pacific Ocean.

Every year thousands of people have
problems in this sea.

I'll show you what you
need to know to survive here.

Deadliest Catch

I'm flying over the Pacific Ocean

over 30 thousand islands with
Most of them are uninhabited

It may seem like a paradise
but can be deadly

huge waves currents
unexpected many sharks

make this one of the ocean
most dangerous on earth

if you are in the water will
need to know how to survive.

I'll be in the same situation
anyone who has had this problem

ocean without a life jacket.

All I have is a knife the clothes
the body and the crew

My mission is to get one of these
islands and from there go to a safe place.

The wind seems to be taking me in
right direction to that island

are some 3 km from there but what
My concern here are the currents

and if they will let me
reach the island or not ...

recently succeeded in 3 children
survive after their parents died

when their boat capsized.

after spending 6 days
clinging to the hull of the boat

they then were forced to swim 8 km
in waters full of sharks to

a desert island.

They survived for a week
drinking rainwater and eating blackberries

before being rescued ...

if you are at sea for kilometers of
land the secret is to save energy

this is to swim long distances is
best swimming side and conserve energy

for rebenta??es around the island.

the Pacific islands are known
for its strong surf

and this will be an immediate problem
how to get ashore.

Waves and currents are so strong
it is difficult to get to the rocks ...

This powerful undertow is created by
waves hitting the rocks.

North American waterways each year

because they panic and try to
swim against the current

and quickly become exhausted.

The best technique is to swim parallel to the
coast until you no longer feel the

current pull it.

Then you come to the beach.

Swim breast keeping the head
out of the water and look for the best

access point.

I finally succeeded

But I need water
me and shelter.

But first I need to explore the island to
see what resources it has.

But this part of the island is
surrounded by cliffs.

I am a climber but there
basic techniques you can use.

First find the best route with more
places with support for hands and feet

use your hands to guide and their
legs to push.

Inexperienced climbers tire fast
they try to go only with the arms.

Sound like paradise ...

but even in paradise you do not
survive without food and water.

this point of observation
I can see a beach

seems to be sheltered from the wind and I
I can see palm trees and can have food.

So that's where I go.

But not a ground like this
be careful

the vegetation can hide
funding gaps between the rocks.

Down in this valley seems impossible

because all around is
surrounded by vertical rocks ...

but I found here
fig Bengal and its roots ...

grow along the face of
rock and go to the bottom.

These roots can be
a means to descend.

This part is difficult.

Technically it is more difficult
fall than rise

because it is much harder to see you
where to place the feet and hands

but it is the same rules
you have to relax and go slow

and not move without one hundred percent
sure that the feet and hands are

well supported.

and you can make some one thousand
times but to err is only one.

the most important thing is to always maintain
three points of contact with the tree.

you should not support
with only one hand.

This part is difficult because it is
here where the roots grew

and the rocks of the cliff
are unraveling.

My arms are burning.

I'm running out of strength but
I went down and I'm in the jungle.

I want to get to the beach as soon as possible but
is easy to become disoriented in the dense

Wow look!

Look at the bamboo is
simply amazing

Bamboo is very versatile can use
to shelter spear and other things

essential to survive

and I'll take some with me.

Wow look at this and the risk of
down was truly worth it.

This will be perfect and is a thousand times
more sheltered from the place I got.

It will be a good place to camp and
I'll also be able to fish here.

Now the big question:
- I can not find water?

Translation and Sync: Ph0b05.
Review: Decon RW9.

There are over 30 thousand islands on the ocean
peaceful and many are uninhabited.

If you're lost on an island like this there
chances that someone is looking for you.

Then you have to be sure
seen by a rescue group

you need to build a
signal fire.

I want to make the bonfire the highest
I can and that is also the most

flammable possible

to burn very fast and produces light
I want to start with this huge pile

dried leaves of trees to be
use as a wick and then I'll use

these dried leaves of coconut tree and then
make a tripod around the wick.

But I will not turn on now I
wait a boat or plane appear

and then I also picked up some leaves
green and put in back to avoid

water intake and keep the leaves
droughts but also produce smoke.

If the rescue come the day I
I need this smoke.

But I have to light another fire now

that must burn constantly to
may light up the sign at any time.

to light the fire I'll use
a technique called * Fire Plow

widely used in the Pacific Islands.

The hibiscus that grows throughout Polynesia
is a perfect wood to use

the bow and spike as has
a low moisture content.

and that helping it going because the sweat
dripping from my nose is down two

times here I need to start again but
let the sweat fall on the left

Come on to almost there!

creating sufficient friction between the arch
and the base you can have an ember that

can be exploited to turn
a strand of coconut shells

coals have already done here
just turn the lock

And soon there will be fire
There you are!

We fire.

Staying warm is no problem here but
the sun is punishing and exposed to

Wind and rain can end up with health
then I'll build a simple shelter.

the hibiscus is a very useful tree and he
is easy to find near the islands

Mexico's Pacific coast and you recognize
the leaves heart-shaped

its smooth bark is excellent
pra tie anything.

Normally I would build the shelter in
shadow but my priority here is

be visible to a rescue that is
flying and any other rescue.

What am I going to do is hold that
most of the fiber shell.

In the first layer I use leaves
dried palm which is very abundant

and I do not waste a lot
energy to find them

and above will use green leaves
they resist water better.

survive is a question
both mental and physical

and sometimes something as simple as a
Diving can lift your spirits.

Usually on islands such as this are
uninhabited because they have no

source of drinking water and the best way
to hydrate is getting those coconuts

and I want to have a problem they
there are ten twelve feet high

and get them will not be easy.

is a technique when climbing these
trees always keep a pressure

the trunk with the heels and toes
feet and switch between hands and feet.

You need to have strong thighs if
know how to ride will be very good at it

but my thighs are
burning and I'm only halfway ...

Coconuts can save your life in this
situation but also k*ll.

People die every year because
coconuts falling on their heads.

A coconut weighs an average of almost two kilos
and can hit the ground with a force of

a metric ton.

I want them the greens are
new and they contain much more water

older the Browns who are in
beach. These greens are much richer

in nutrients and the way I
will take just keep spinning it.

And should fall at any time.

And here he comes ... and there he goes.

Cool.

Down the tree is more difficult
and painful than you think.

I'll tell you this is not something you
will want to do if you are a man.

Coconuts are rich in potassium which
body loses when you sweat.

It's wonderful.

It also has vitamin C and carbohydrates
being a good source of energy ...

And it is not surprising that the Polynesians
call the palm-tree of life.

I met one of the survivors of
tsunami of 2005 that was rescued from

a desert island who survived

shows as well as the coconut
can save lives.

Two sailors survived for
a week in an island

after their boat sank

after spending the night clinging to
wrecks the tide took them to an island

desert where there was water ...

they survived on
coconuts and crustaceans

until rescued seven days after
when the flag was improvised

sighted by a plane.

But if the rescue does not appear?

It's my second day on the island and if you
is in this situation your next

Priority will be food.

I'll try their luck in the ocean.

First I need to do a lan?a.Esse
Bamboo is a beginning to prevent

Split bamboo I need to use some
peel hibiscus wrap it around

Now I leave the tip of the bamboo and
assim.agora fit I can do

four corners sharp.

The sharper easier
will be trying to catch a fish.

I'll try right.

And it will be useful if I need me
defend because these waters are areas

hunting of sharks ...

You're getting very sharp now and this is
even the best casts I can

do to fish.

There are many fish here I
just need to catch them

but there are risks some fish are
poisonous and others can attack me

then keep your hands away
of any hole or crack

because the fish can moray
attack everything you see

and also not try to eat them
morays cause ciguatera

the most common food poisoning
for seafood in E.U.A.

I can only hold my breath for two
minutes before returning to the surface.

Of all animals humans have the
less able to hold their breath.

But I need to continue and I would
more spirit a good meal.

This turtle would give me a meal
delicious but in the late 70 they

joined the list of extinction I only
eat if you were very desperate.

I'm out of breath but I definitely
I'm getting hold your breath for

longer than the first time
and this is what I gotta do go

increasing the time gradually.

Meet with a shark
was not what I expected

luckily this is a sand shark a
less aggressive species here

but this is a reminder that can
be others around.

Then it's time to leave the water and fast.

but I will not give up it is at these times
you need to keep trying

and if not work then
arrange a new plan.

I'll try a traditional technique
used by the inhabitants of these islands

I'm looking for a plant that can
be used to poison fish.

The fish poison is common in all peaceful

it has oval leaves and is
found near the back ...

the poison is in the roots only use roots
small and fresh it contains more venom.

Often the fish are caught
these rock pools at low tide

and what I'll do is grind these
timbo roots to catch the oil it

and this is really cool just need to grind
and then stir it into the water.

In minutes any fish that has
contact with it will float

the surface.

The plant and roots contain rotenone

a natural toxin used for centuries
by native peoples to catch fish

and the poison has no harmful effects on
humans then it is safe to eat fish.

Legal caught eight that's dinner.

Now that caught the fish I need
cook them and what I'll do is

bake them in what they call immunity and it is
an oven made of traditional Hawaiian

stones and I always wanted to do this but
never had time to do properly

first you have to dig a hole
so now I use my catcher

giant that I did before
that was pretty cool.

and I can get one of these stones and
put them here and are very hot

and they are going to bake the fish ...

then I wrap them ...

these stones will be hot for
many many hours and the sand is a

excellent insulator.

Well to bake these fish I'm
wrap them in leaves of melaleuca

and these leaves are very important
for the Polynesian people are known

to combat aging which
is very good but more importantly

that will give flavor and retain moisture.

That will be right in the middle
and will cook in steam

I will now tie it together ...

And now ready for baking.

So I'll use some of these
sheets to cover the bottom of the oven

'm here more leaves
up and just wait

for over an hour ...

It should be ready I can not wait.

As the fish bake I'll extract
a little oil of coconut meat

that will protect me from the
sun and sea water.

What I'm trying to do is
crushing to extract the oil

never creamy
as a sunscreen

but I just want to knead
enough to get the oil

and it is this oil that will protect me
seawater rashes and sun.

and all I need to do is turn a
little in the hand and rub the skin so

and you can tell the oil coming out and
give me a good protection.

My fish must have been baked.

Therein lies.

And I see that the eyes jumped pra
out I do not know if you can see

'll take one ...

the eyes of the fish jumped and
that means they are ready

and those you can eat whole and
this looks good ... I could stay here

indefinitely have shelter food
and what to drink but I want to go home

and tomorrow I will do something you've always wanted
build a raft and go out to the sea.

I put in the position of a stranger
an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean

have found shelter and food I could
wait for weeks for the rescue

but if you run out of food and water you just
if you can survive off the island.

And that's what I'll do.

The natives of the Polynesian used
travel thousands of miles by canoe

similar to this these canoes
the tree trunk and when they wanted to go

further they put
stabilizer hand

much like this and this gave
more stability for the canoe

but I do not have the time or tools
to make a canoe drawn up like this

but I have great resources here very
bamboo and much rope arrangement to

and what I can do is a catamaran

a version of two fins it here.

It is far less sophisticated
but it has stability.

I can use this to get off this island.

Bamboo is used by sailors
for thousands of years for its strength and

buoyancy. There are air pockets
between the nodes of the plant and even in us

are tiny pockets of air.

To break down the bamboo one I need
build a fire in their base

because there's no way to cut it with
my knife I would take an eternity

but before doing so I'll stick a
these cameras because they are filled with air

and if I did not stick the fire will heat
air and bamboo may explode.

So I need to insert the tip of the knife
blade or just to release the pressure.

This thing is very hard but I think ...
I can to see it now could

make a hole and this
should relieve the pressure.

Now to make the fire I brought a
embers of the camp fire in these

coconut shells and is still on.

it's still on.

And I can use a Quaker
of dry woods here.

The fire almost went out and I do not
our walk another 800 meters to

the forest to get one more hot.

Cool!

I'll wrap it up with
the bark of the hibiscus.

This simple design of the catamaran
will give me more stability

and more space for supplies.

I can not wait to see it in the water.

The deck has to be strong and flexible
enough to withstand the strong waves and

waves and let me higher
possible for me to keep dry.

And because the vessel is so
heavy made under roller bamboo

for me to take
it to water more easily.

I need a candle without any candle
journey is at the mercy of the currents.

This is a part of the vessel
is a mystery to me trying to make a

sailing and this is something I never did.

And honestly do not know will not work.
If it works or not.

I weave these leaves
palm to the candle

and make a wooden structure
to support involving everything.

It may work well

I for some of these and I
tie everything together.

And it might work.

But I do not know if it will endure the rigor
the ground is the open sea.

I decided to find out how things are
conditions of the sea from the island

and are not good.

There is no way I leave this island before
these winds stop then

look at that it is a cauldron of water
busy and it's intimidating just by looking

and is as far as I can see.

Any raft would have problems in a
sea so I'll have to wait for the winds

calm down.

Then I see something in the water a bottle
and it can save my life.

If I can get the bottle will
make much difference to me

down but there will not be easy.

Waves like that can be lethal.

Recently a family was wiped out
a platform like this for a large

wave while looking at the surf.

The couple had drowned but the water pushed
son of 11 years for the rocks

when it was rescued by lifeguards.

Waves usually
has a regular pattern

they come in succession seven
and are becoming increasingly important.

So if I were the patient
adequate and comply with standards

I can avoid the waves.

The bottle floated towards deeper waters
calm I'll take the chance.

This bottle can be
essential to carry water

but now it's time to go
the sheltered side of the island and give

finishing touches on my boat.

open sea I need to have
control of the vessel.

Then I get a paddle with hibiscus.

'm Tying with a
fiber to resistance.

This also will be my rudder is a work
hard and time consuming but worth doing right

not want to be at the mercy of the currents.

My candle is also
beginning to take shape now.

Weaving is one of those things that
can not be done quickly

and is also good to have time to sit
quietly the sun set the fire is

access and I can make it calmly
and I'm feeling now is that

will definitely work
like a candle ...

And every leaf I weave I am a
step closer to my house.

After leaving I can face the
greatest fear of sailors adrift ...

Sharks.

He just hit down here.

Deadliest Catch - Man Vs Wild

The next morning it's raining.

But this is good news for me.

It is a way to take a bath
cool and remove the sea water to me.

This is much better than that salt.

When it rains so try
make the most.

I'll see if collect a little water and
best way to do this is ...

I just found a shell
old coconut ...

and if I put the sand in this way
one of those big leaves the rain will

drain here and fill it here since
is raining very hard to fill in

minutes. It will be a
good glass of fresh water.

In this heat you should drink at
least half a liter of water every day.

My bottle just give me
five days of water.

This is hard work but I managed
this is my candle and also

my protection against the sun
when at sea.

It was too much.

I need to make sure I have
all supplies they need

it is the following since this
sail beauty is so heavy that

I can not get it back to the beach.

I need everything that is nescess?rio
to face the ground that holds.

In the water I to taking more
coconut oil to protect me

pra sand and polish my knife.

If I sight any vessel
I will use as a signal reflector.

To me this is very exciting and
I will never forget those days

but I pray with all my heart
and soul for this to work.

It is the moment of truth if you
find that your raft will not hold

leave it and swim back but this
Polynesian design seems to be stable.

I'm off the island and the winds seem
be weaker than in recent days

I was watching them and the winds
winds finally stopped

and this is the window in the weather that I was
and I hope it stays that way

until I go a little further.

The chops will weaken my boat
and I hope that this calm will last.

But now the first problem
be open sea is the sun.

It's very hot here and the candle
you give me a bit of shade

but my biggest problem now is
amount of water splashing on me

and I can feel my skin
is getting very dry

and that's why I brought
this coconut oil.

I will now pass same to avoid
irritation caused by sea water.

The best way to keep cool is to
a swim with a time range

but it is always good to tie because there
many stories of survivors

being separated from their boats.

But there is something in the water
and I need to get out fast.

I should have looked at two
times before entering.

It's lucky I was out of the water
and usually the sharks are in

surface and you can see their
dorsal fins but these are

the bottom and I had no idea how
close when they were immersed.

When you need to leave the vessel
never take the clothes and shoes

statistically when there is a group of
people at sea usually those

are without clothes are
first to be attacked.

This is because sharks can mistake
the reflection of sunlight on the skin with a fish.

Wow look at this guy look! Wow

Those tiger sharks and the worst
bite out of all the sharks of the sea.

Look at this guy and if you are in
water being attacked the better you

can do is yell hit the water and
punching the shark in the nose or the guelrras

are the most sensitive parts of it.

This is the view that
castaways fear most.

And it is very hard to keep calm.

I built a raft and leave the island
to show you how to survive at sea.

But now I'm facing a situation
like many sailors adrift.

Wow he hit the bottom of the vessel.

I wish that they would go away soon.

Look! look! look! look!

Except the white shark the tiger is
responsible for more human deaths

than any other shark.

Wow this is not good!

But soon they get bored
me and go away.

This makes me wonder how people
survive a week after the other

these vast oceans.

It takes willpower and
determination to keep hope.

Therefore it is important to keep
busy and do everything possible to

try to find more food and water.

It's time to fish

and I'm using a hook made with the
bone of a fish that I caught on the island

a bit of bait

and a line made of hibiscus fiber
as well as a bamboo stick.

Cross your fingers for me to get something.

I'll relax and see what I can.

Hey I fished something.

Wow look at it is actually a fish
surgeon they are ugly and gross

and you can tell because look are very
sharp and here is something that

with a knife and something like
a blade and it is very sharp

can easily cut a vein
if you hold wrong.

And what I'll do is open it and ...

Can you see the backbone here and all that
I want is the fluid inside.

Not much but it's better than nothing.

One of the most incredible
survival at sea I've ever heard

was a couple of "Baileys" husband
and woman who were hit by a

whale when they were on the yacht and
ended up in a life raft

more than 100 days and they survived
eating raw sea turtles seabirds

and fish and all they had was
some safety pins and hands.

They were eventually rescued by a
small fishing boat but the clothes

they literally rotted in the body
and they had sunburn and

wounds throughout his body but survived.

This making of Farenheight 100
[38 Celsius]

but the reflection of sun on the water gives
impression that is much more.

And I run a shadow
the risk of heatstroke.

The Pacific is a vast ocean but also
has busy shipping lanes.

However it is likely that they will not
you see unless you call the

their attention first.

It has a boat there probably 6 or 8
miles I see the top of it

when he stops going up and down on
waves but surely is a boat.

I'll use this knife go sand pra
shine and use it to do a sign.

And a sign of these can be seen
? uns 10 kilometros de dist?ncia.

Great and a man was seen over

like this you just need to make a "V"
fingers and the blade angle to the sun

hide the knife and go doing this and pray
that someone there you see the deck.

Surely definitely
they are there.

Although this site seems idyllic was
much more difficult than I imagined.

And now I understand better how
the sea can be unforgiving

but also the heroism of some
people who survived it

it's almost like one of those
places that you can only enjoy

only after having been there. But for me
is definitely the time to go home.
