12x06 - Dive Hard With a Vengeance

Post by bunniefuu »

Narrator:
Now, on "bering sea gold"...

Shawn: It's getting towards
the end of the season,

and we need to start having
some big clean-outs.

Otherwise, I'm gonna lose
all my dredgers.

So, we are going to push
the christine rose

to the limit
in the deeper water.

It's the risk
we have to take.

It's gonna be one of those days,
like a fricking rodeo.

Ken: Our goal is to do

and smash every record
that's ever come out of nome.

I've been grinding
around the clock,

sleeping in the chair.

It gets grueling.

Got to have
another operator.

Curl that bucket
all the way up.

Man, you screwed
that one up.

Vernon:
Winter is on its way.

We've got to start making
a profit on this gold ship,

so I need a strong team.

If I got to diver that's not
cutting it, he'll be packing.

You're breaking more [bleep]
than you're fixing.

Pack your [bleep],
and get off the boat.

Kris:
If I'm gonna make enough gold
for my big ship this season,

right now, it's time to
really take some risks.

The way we're getting gold's
a little sketchy.

If people didn't like us before,
they're gonna hate us now.

did I tell you
we got a new plan today, dad?

I was out at the bar
last night.

My friend says that the au
grabber's on 3 ounces an hour.

Hey, the plan is
super simple.

We're gonna
creep toward him

until we get on
his spot.

And I hope they
don't notice us.

Narrator: As the second half
of summer mining revs up,

kris kelly
is hatching a scheme

to try to kick his season
into overdrive...

Okay, what do you think?
Are we going to do it?

Just try it.
Yeah. Let's go try it.

Andy, drop the ropes.
Let's go.

...Using the ancient art
of riding coattails.

To infinity and beyond!

You never talk about
what you're getting at the bar.

That's the number-one rule.

Okay, so, my friend,

he's the guy
that runs the excavator,

he's sitting there, and he's
telling me what he's getting.

And he's like, "whoa, kris,
our box is just [bleep]

golden in the hold,"
and I'm like, "yeah!"

you know. So, I tell,
you know, like,

I tell that to my dad
and brother.

I go, "look, you know what?

Let's head on over to
my au grabber buddy."

brad: Kris has got a plan today
to get on the excavator spot,

and try and borrow
some of their gold,

or help them extract
some of the gold, there.

Yeah, we're going down

on someone's claim.

Oh, it's really [bleep]

to go after somebody else
that's working there,

and then, you just pull on up,
and jump on in.

Yeah.

Well, if we're gonna
rob something,

we might as well rob the bank,
not the liquor store.

I am telling you, man,
they're k*lling it over there.

Narrator:
On their last trip out...

Emily: None of your
claim-jumping, right now.

So, you're gonna
have to move.

...The kellys,
quite possibly,

edged onto
emily riedel's claim...

Kris: There's gold right
on the claim.

Narrator: ...But definitely,
reap the rewards.

-11.
-Ta-da!

Now, they've got their sights
set on an even bigger score --

looking to poach the area around
the 85-foot excavator barge

known as
"the au grabber."

going to emily's was like
shopping at the 99¢ store,

but now, we're going to macy's,
and do a little shopping.

that with this little boat,

there'll be
a celebration tonight, huh?

No guts, no glory.

We're gonna
make this work.

Look, the truth is,

we're not processing
enough gold right now.

We need to make more gold,
and get the big boat going.

Everything's gonna
be working for us.

Narrator:
Halfway through the season,

the kellys are less than halfway
towards their goal

of earning enough to refurbish
their very own mining vessel.

You know what?
Just trust me.

So, the captain's willing
to do whatever's necessary

to make his dream
a reality.

You want to know why
this plan's gonna work?

Brad: Why?

They've already ripped into
the second clay layer.

We never make it to
the second clay layer.

Their trench is,
like, 20 feet deep.

So, they've done
all the work for us.

While suction dredgers
are unable to penetrate

the first layer
of hard clay,

an excavator barge has the power
to punch through it,

exposing additional
clay layers,

as well as rich deposits
of gold.

I will never,,
with a 6-inch operation,

ever get down that far
in my entire life.

So, basically, I let this
excavator do all the hard work.

We pick up all the peaches
that are left behind,

and we're doing
pretty good.

Get your panties ready.

It's gonna be just fine.

We're gonna sneak in
next to them.

They won't even notice.

A fella on top of their boat's
staring at us.

[bleep]!

They're looking
right at us.

Hey! Wait here!

Tell dad to
k*ll the engine.

Andy: k*ll it.

-Hey!
-Hey!

What's up?

My boat broke down.

I'll fix it
right away.

Kris: They keep giving me
the stink eye.

Let's just see
how today plays out.

Let's go, before they figure out
what we're doing.

Come on. Let's go.
Let's go. Let's go.

Andy: We're getting ready
to rob the bank, right now.

If we get any [bleep],
or anything,

kris kelly sent us here.

I just want to note that --
kris kelly.

Keep time.
Here we go.

Here we go,
to get us some gold!

Narrator: As kris dives into
the back half of the season,

half a mile west...

Shawn: I'm starting
to fill up ripples on this side.

Narrator: ...Shawn pomrenke
is already making a splash.

Shawn: We're back on
that pay streak.

I want to load this box up,
and turn it yellow.

Narrator: To pay off
a $1.3 million debt,

and turn a profit
on the season...

Shawn:
No more screwing around.

Narrator: ...Shawn's grinding on
a lucrative pay streak

he's dubbed
"the river of gold".

Out here, just a little bit
deeper, there's a lot more gold.

And out further a little deeper
than that,

there's a lot more gold.

And it might go
from here to russia.

Narrator:
But to stay on the trail,

john has to push the c.R.'s

Shawn: Here we go.

Well, we're not too far.

We are within an inch or two
of being maxed out.

I'm gonna see if I can
get to the bottom of it.

Felt like I may have gotten
to the bottom of it.

Big chunks of clay
coming up.

The gold goes down
through the sand,

through the gravel,
through the goo,

and onto that hard clay,

and sits on top of
that hard clay.

That's how you know
you're to the bottom

of where you're digging.

Going deeper out on the tomcod,
hone in on that pastry.

The gold is out there, deep.

but as long as I can reach it,
we're gonna dig it.

It's getting interesting,
right here.

And it's getting deeper.

Ooh, big rock.

They're getting to be
big boulders and...

This could be the channel,
right here.

The hard material is usually
pretty good ground, and virgin.

Ow.

Digging in the big boulders,
you have to be careful.

Anything too big,
you'll wreck the whole system.

ooh.

It's gonna be one of those days,
like a fricking rodeo.

But when you're on good gold,
you push it a little bit harder

and a little bit longer
than you should.

Hang on.
We're going for a ride.

Yeah.

There's some big rocks
down there.

Big rocks,
big boulders.

Starting to get thrashed around,
here, pretty good.

But as long as
we can stay out here,

and stay on it,
we're gonna dig it.

Hit another jackpot, here.

I feel you down there.

Get in the pocket.

Narrator: Coming up...

Vernon: No, man.
I, I'm done with you, brian.

You're breaking more [bleep]
than you're fixing.

So, when we get back, pack your
[bleep], and get off the boat.

Ken: I'm running short on hands,
and I need some sleep.

I'm running 24/7.

Narrator: Dead set on keeping
his crown as mr. Gold,

and breaking the record
in nome

for the biggest
summer haul ever,

ken kerr has been burning
the candle at both ends.

So, I worked all day, and then
worked most of the night.

Now, we'll go
back out today.

Keeping the old myrtle
running night and day

is more than
a one-man job.

I can go out, and put a 12-hour
shift in by myself,

or 20 hours, at times.

But you can't do it
consistently.

You can only get in so much time
before you fall over.

If you're gonna run 24/7
with that old girl,

you'd better have some help --
and some good help.

Here comes my new operator.

Look at that --
on time.

Narrator: To try and get
some relief,

the captain's testing out
a new operator...

New guy -- greenhorn.

I'm gonna have to
train him today.

...To see if he can handle
the 600-ton beast.

Not much, dave.
Good seeing you, buddy.

You've got a lot of
excavator experience, right?

Yeah. I ran a--
I've got a lot of hours

on the excavators and stuff,
running them back home.

You've never done nothing
in water, have you?

No.

Are you ready to get on that
barge, and work in the water?

I'm looking forward
to it.

Right on.
Well, we better to go to work.

Alright!
Go out on the barge!

Ken: Our goal is to do

so we're putting gold
in the box 24/7.

Can't afford
to lose a shift.

So, I've got to hire somebody
to keep that thing running.

Alright. Let's go up top,
show you the ropes.

Dave's never
operated offshore.

Training him today, definitely
got my work cut for me.

We're back in
that riverbed.

That's the one you saw
from the air?

Yeah.

This is a really hot area,
right here.

Let's do some [bleep].

Yeah, we're ready to go.

Hammering's hard stuff.

You can feel
when you're about --

when you're
getting under.

That's good-looking material.

That's got the gold in it,
right there.

All dry-looking?
Yeah.

That stuff just slides
out of there.

So, you want it to just kind of
fall out on its own like that.

You don't want it...
Yeah.

This thing just overloads
the sluice box,

so it's better just to
feather it in.

A great operator is somebody
that's smooth on the --

on the machine, and also,
can put gold in the box,

you know, who can get
full bucket loads of material.

It's not easy to find somebody
that can do that.

Well, you ready to run?

I'm going to take a break,
let you do a little digging.

What do you think of that?
Hell yeah.

Poke a hole in the barge,
you're fired, buddy.

Alright, buddy.
It's all yours.

Dave could shadow me
all day long,

but the only way
he's gonna really learn

how to run this myrtle

is to get it that in seat,
and run it.

I hope he can handle her.

-Ooh.
-Yeah, there you go.

It's intimidating, getting
in that thing the first time.

I don't care
what you run.

All the guys that get in there,
go dig a bucketful,

and they come up
with nothing but water.

Let's see if
you got a load.

Oh, I felt that.

I don't think
you got anything.

You didn't
get nothing.

Just go back,
and get another scoop.

Dave: Oh, my god.

Ken: You got anything
in there?

Curl that bucket
all the way up.

The barge is moving, so when
you're swinging that bucket,

the barge is going
the opposite direction,

it takes your bucket, and moves
it 2 feet in either direction,

if you're not careful.

Right there.

Usually, you come down with
a boom, a little bit.

Holy [bleep]

that bucket falls 5 feet
in a microsecond.

So, when you go to lay it,
it bounces, or jumps,

and you hit,
and do some damage.

It's always a concern
that the new guy's

gonna tear something up.

We hit that screen
a couple times.

Dave: I don't want to
hit nothing.

No. And you can't
see the bucket.

Not being able
to see nothing.

Let me jump in there,
real quick.

Jump in that seat.
Oh, [bleep].

There's a steep learning curve,
working on the bering sea.

It takes years, actually,
to get good at it.

Probably just gonna have to
take this one shift at a time.

It's not as easy
as it looks, is it?

No, it's not.

I just found that out.

It's pretty crazy
out here.

Narrator:

Vernon: Yeah, it always
feels good to get underway.

We're going back out here
to the same spot we've been.

We've got a buoy
marking our spot.

And the gold,
it's in streaks,

and in pockets,
and in cracks and crevices.

Narrator: ...Heading farther
than the rest of the fleet,

captain vernon adkison is hoping
his western claims hold the key

to unlocking a bountiful
second half of the season.

Vernon: A couple of ounces
an hour,

that's what I'm looking
to get into.

I mean, this dinking,
a half ounce, ounce an hour,

it's not really
why I came to nome.

It's gonna require a lot more
than that to satisfy me.

Narrator:
This summer, the old skipper
is aiming for enough ounces

to pay off the gold ship,
and sneak into the black...

Vernon: If it's a doable thing,
we'll do it.

Narrator: ...And he's already
tapped into a rich pastry

on his remote
western claim.

Vernon: We know where
the gold is.

We know how to do it.

We've just got to be able
to put that dime on the bottom,

and put that gold
into the box.

We are here.
There's our buoy.

We'll go over there,
and drop the hook.

Get brian to help you.

Narrator:
To get the gold flowing,

he's looking to his
newly anointed superstar,

brian donham.

Brian, drop the hook.

Brian: Sure.

Narrator:
On his first trip out...

-Go for it.
-Go for it.

Brian: Alrighty.
I'm gonna go.

Narrator: ...Brian's free
dive saved the day,

finding a lost part
on the bottom of the sea.

[ cheering, laughing ]

...And landing the team
back on their honey hole.

Vernon: So, I'm thinking,
"yeah, yeah, okay."

I mean, you know,
"hooray for brian."

he's gonna fit in
with the team.

And hopefully,
we'll be able to count on him

to perform very well.

I need a strong team.

We need to suck up that gold

Okay.

Alright, brian,
just fling it out.

Clear it cleat over there,
so you can throw a turn on it.

I don't give a [bleep]
about that.

Just put it around
the back horn of the cleat.

[ sighs ]

narrator: But today...

Vernon: The back. No.
The other way, brian.

Narrator: ...The new superstar
isn't shining too bright.

Okay, we'll drop
that stern anchor.

And just be very careful.

Take the radio with you.

Do not let that anchor line
get caught around the propeller.

Brian: Okay.

Make radio contact
with me.

Alright, so,
here it goes.

Okay. Got you
loud and clear.

Put on the stern anchor.

Did he throw it yet?

Vernon: Is it in
the water yet?

Alright.
I need some communication.

I mean, what's happening
with the radio?

Go back there, and tell him
to [bleep] communicate with me.

Dropped it where?

Okay, all three of you,
come up here.

No, man.
I'm done with you, brian.

You're breaking more [bleep]
than you're fixing.

So, when we get back,
pack your [bleep],

and get off the boat.

I'm just --
no, I can't have that.

I mean, some people are just
[bleep] accident-prone.

Some people can't get
their [bleep] together,

and you seem to be
one of them.

So, I'm done with you.

So, when we get back, just get
your [bleep] off the boat.

Yeah, yeah.

Right.

Exactly.

Brian: Okay.

That's it.
That's it with him.

Narrator:
Coming up...

Hey, tell kris we should
maybe get out of here.

We don't want
to get run over.

[bleep]

vernon:
I give brian a radio, and the
handheld went in the water.

I can't afford
to keep him

if he's gonna
keep breaking stuff.

So, I fired him.

Narrator: On the gold ship
wild ranger...

Brian: Hey, vern,
about that radio,

should I just get you
another radio,

or do you want me
off the boat, or what?

What -- what's --
what are you thinking?

Damn, brian.

I'm not really that concerned
about the price of the radio.

It's a $100 radio,
at the most.

It's just that, brian, you seem
to be accident-prone, my man.

I mean,
I can't have people

breaking more stuff
than they fix.

You know, it's a matter
of simple economics.

That's the way it --
that's the way it works.

Yeah, I get that, yeah.

I'm not here
to cost you any money.

I'm here to
make you money.

I'm a good dredger,
safe underwater.

I'm -- I'm just here
to help you find gold.

Oh, christ, man.
You're k*lling me.

We'll roll with it
a while longer, alright?

But I'm --
I'm putting you on notice.

And no disrespect.
It's business.

Alright, well,
get after it.

Okay, sounds good.

I do tend to give people
second chances.

And, I mean,
you come --

everybody makes mistakes...

Especially greenhorns.

Alright, brian.

And I did promise him,
emphatically,

that I would let him dive
when we got to nome.

But if brian wants
to stick around,

he's got to put gold
in that box.

We're watching
your every move.

Show me some
shiny stuff.

Gary: There's going to be
some good stuff.

Come on.

Brian: I'm on the clay.
That's a good sign.

Yeah, that's some good stuff.
I like it.

I like what I'm seeing.
Good job.

Brian:
Yeah, this is good.

I've got a rock jammed.

Vernon: Damn it.

Pick that hose up,
and drop it.

Brian: Yep.

Almost got it out.

Holy [bleep].

Looked to me like
you got it all, right?

-Yeah.
-Okay.

And just go ahead,
and start the pump up.

[ engine starts ]

[bleep]

I wonder what
would cause that.

Gary: I'm thinking it got so hot
that, by the time

we started
sending water through,

that it steam burst,
comes back out,

and wasn't cooling.

Brian: Alright.

That's a good way
to blow an engine,

overheating
the damn thing.

It's been a --
a day of snafus, okay?

That's putting
it mildly.

To get geared up,

and go all the way
out to the site,

fire it up,
and then it be a no-go --

that's really hard
on morale.

It just -- it depresses
the hell out of everybody.

It would be great to get
a full day of mining in.

'cause right now,
nobody's made any money yet.

Nobody's made any money.

Vernon: I was just trying
to get everything...

Make everything gel,
and dovetail.

Right now,
I'm not doing it.

Narrator:

...Captain kris kelly
is fishing down below,

to recover the scraps
of a giant mining barge.

Brad:
These guys, they just moved out
of this 20-foot hole they dug.

They really don't see
what they're mining.

Kris got an idea that they left
a whole wall lined with gold,

and we're just
gonna scoop it up.

So, see what happens.

Kris: Hey, come on, everybody.
Let's sneak up to him, now.

Okay, let's go!

Okay. Start moving.

Don't get too close,
but just kind of get close.

The chain's up. Go.

okay. I'm in position.

brad: Kris is working, like,

He'd better watch out.
They might scoop him up, man.

Kris: I found a
kickass hole.

This has to be where
they were working yesterday.

I am. I'm looking on the walls.
I'm trying to get to the bottom.

This is pretty scary.

Visibility down here
is not that great.

on the gold.

Ha-ha-ha!

He already finding gold!

We're on gold, baby!

And if they'll let us
follow them around all year,

we'll claim their holes
when they're gone.

This is perfect!
Good job, kris!

And we're on gold!

It's the best gold
I've seen this season!

Oi! Oi!

Hey, we're on big gold!
Big gold! Thank you!

I could piss harder
than that, dude.

That's like a dude with
a prostate problem, right there.

[ laughs ]

I see a lot of gold.

Ha-ha-ha!

That's all they've got, dude?
A weak fire hose?

We're out of
pissing range.

[ laughs ]

[ expl*si*n ]

whoa!
What the [bleep]?

Now, they're
firing rockets at us!

They want
to play dirty.

These things sh**t
like cannonballs, dude.

This could get dangerous.

[ expl*si*n ]

ohhh!

Narrator:
On the tomcod claim...

Kris: I'm on over an ounce
an hour.

Narrator: ...Everything
is firing on all cylinders.

[ expl*si*n ]

ohhh!

This could
get dangerous.

Kris:
Ha-ha-ha-ha!

Oh-h*-h*!
What's that mean?

They've got to go
back into town.

[ laughs ]

hey, tell kris we should
maybe get out of here.

We don't want
to get run over.

Oh, [bleep].

Tell him to bring the hose,
and hook it up.

Au grabber:
Get back!

You prick!

Get the anchor.
We've got back up, man.

[ indistinct talking ]

andy: I'm not going
back out there.

Pull the anchor!
I'm not going back out there!

I just got soaked!

We had a little bit of a
confrontation -- itty bitty.

But I was underneath
the water.

I could --
I didn't have any problems.

I could've been there
all [bleep] day long.

No, turn that frown
upside down.

I think I've stumbled upon a way
to get all my gold for my boat.

They're leaving
too much gold behind.

So, I'm not trying
to take their gold.

I'm trying to take
the gold that they leave,

which is more gold
than I get.

So, you know, bam!

It was a pretty
good idea.

I want to pat myself
on the back,

and say,
"good job, kristopher!"

mission accomplished.

Narrator:

Ken: Oh, look at that.
Yeah!

Oh, yeah!
Oh, yeah.

Narrator:
...On the myrtle irene...

Ken: Whoo-hoo!
We're in the gold.

We're in the honey hole,
right now, I guarantee it.

The river's good.
It's not running dry yet.

Narrator:
...While captain ken kerr
raids the ancient riverbed...

Ken: Most of this
is glacier till.

All been rolled in here millions
of years ago, by glaciers.

Narrator: ...Rookie operator
dave walsh watches and learns

from the myrtle master...

Ken: Oh, yeah.

Narrator: ...After his morning
crash course

didn't exactly
go swimmingly.

Oh, he's nervous.
Of course he is.

'cause I've seen the best
operators come in here,

and think,
"oh, I can run anything.

I'm the best operator
in the world."

you come out here,
and operate it...

"well, this is different.

I'm not used to not being able
to see my bucket."

operating the myrtle is
way harder than it looks.

The first time on the controls,
I was wondering

if dave was gonna
be able to handle it.

He was definitely nervous,
I mean definitely nervous.

But I can't rake in

I need to build out
this team.

It's pretty amazing
how allis stuff works.

New, fresh spot,
right here.

There you go.

When it comes to
running the myrtle,

there's definitely
no magic b*llet.

You've just got to keep at it,
and over time,

you'll improve,
and build your confidence.

I'm gonna stand over.
Then, you'll be real nervous.

I don't think I can get
any more nervous, ken.

[ laughs ]

now, go all the way down,
till you touch the bottom.

Just keep scraping.
Okay. Stop.

Went too far.

Yeah. It came up.

Now, you curl it,
and see if you got anything.

But I doubt it.

Dave: Looks like all water,
to me.

You screwed that one up.

Damn.

Go right back down?

Yeah. Just go back
in your hole.

don't let that
come off, there.

Don't let it shake.

That's when you've got to be
real gentle with it.

Oh, that looks good.

You got a load.

you scraped up
some goodies.

Circle it up,
and go over the top.

Nice and easy.

Nice and smooth.

Come down with your boom,
a little bit

and put them down
a little more.

There you go.
Yeah, there you go.

That's perfect!

You've got it made.

You're doing better now
than you were.

You've got
this thing down.

Ken:
Dave's picking up full buckets,
and putting gold in the box.

That's a double thumbs.

So, I made a decision.

He's gonna be a great addition
to the myrtle team.

He's getting her down.

We need to get
a good clean-out,

so training's gonna take
a back seat for a little bit.

It was a hell of a day.

A lot to soak in.

Ken: Good job,
greenhorn dave.

Narrator:

Shawn: We're on a really good
pay streak.

Narrator:
...Shawn's in deep...

Shawn: Bam!

There are some big rocks
down there.

Narrator: ...Pushing the
christine rose to its limit

to stay on a high-paying
river of gold.

Shawn:
Come on, now.

Loving it.

Oh, yeah.

[ chuckles ]
that was a big one.

Here we go.

When the wash plant
makes this noise,

right here,
you know you're making money.

Alright.

It's getting
a little much,

and I don't know
how much more

we're gonna be able
to take, here.

Just about got
a full cut done.

I have a feeling
it's gonna look good.

It looks like
really good material.

Ha-ha!
It's fricking loaded.

Yeah!

Whoo.

Let's see what's
underneath here.

Yeah, it's a nice
gold burrito.

Just getting the header
washed out,

be able to see
how we did.

It's gonna give us
a real good idea

of what's in
the rest of the box,

and how much gold
we've got.

Phenomenal!

Off to a
damn good start!

Hell, yeah!
We k*lled it!

Narrator:
Coming up...

Let's pour it out,
and see what we really got.

I love pouring that gold
in the damn scale.

Yeah, let's get her done.

Narrator: And now...

Ken: [singing] jimmy cracked
corn, and I don't care.

Narrator: ...The sweet stylings
of captain ken kerr.

Ken: [singing]
this little light of mine,

I'm gonna let it shine.

Let it shine, let it shine,
let it shine.

My mom gave me money
for singing lessons,

and I spent it on popcorn
and candy, I think.

Boom.

[singing] he's got
the whole world in his hands.

He's got the whole wide world
in his hands.

In his hands.

[speaking]
oh, what a nightmare.

Kris: Here we are, our the best
clean up of the year.

Well, the grabber
clean-out,

we'll see when
we weigh it out.

Kris: It's okay. It's gonna be
our best clean-up of the year.

Narrator:
After putting themselves
into the line of fire,

it's time for the kellys
to find out

if operation bottom feeder
paid off.

So, after getting our a*s
kicked by au grabber,

we're going into
the gold clean-up.

And in order to deal with
this kind of risk,

we need to see
a lot of gold.

Andy: They soaked our whole
boat, and our equipment.

My phone got soaked.
My wallet got soaked.

If dad and andy can't
handle a little abuse,

brad: It's not abuse
when somebody's sh**ting

a flare g*n
at you, okay?

Just knock it back,
or something.

If they hit our gas tank,
we won't be [bleep].

Anyway, this is
gonna take us

over our 100 ounces
this plan.

We're gonna really
start k*lling it.

You know, 'cause we're never
getting to the second clay layer

without someone
digging it for us.

That's why you're getting
all this gold --

'cause you're going to place
dredgers can't reach.

This looks like
the best gold of the year.

If the gold
is really good,

it's worth the hassle
of pissing people off.

You know, but I don't
know that yet.

We'll see.

Man: How's it going
this beautiful day?

We got this from
kris' big plan.

We almost got k*lled
getting it.

Alright.

Kris: We got over 10 ounces,
for sure.

Narrator: 14.15 ounces
is worth just over $21,000,

proving one barge's trash
is another dredger's treasure.

Kris:
I get almost 15 ounces,

and I didn't even have to
do any work for it.

I'm living the dream.

The excavator gold seems to
be paying out really well.

-Told you.
-Things are going better.

Things have turned
right around for us.

Working next to
the gold grabber

was probably
the best decision I made.

This is probably
gonna save my season.

Occasionally, I come up with
a plan that just pays.

Thank you.
-Alright. Thank you very much.

Man: Alright. You guys
have a good day.

Brad: Thank you.

Narrator:

Shawn: Fire it up,
scoopie scoopie.

A little bit of fine gold
under there.

Narrator: ...After enduring
a bering sea bull ride...

Shawn: We're out
in deeper water,

on some really good
ground.

Narrator: ...Shawn's hoping the
deep reach of the christine rose

has made the rodeo
worth it.

It's just critical that
we stay in the good pay,

because we got
such a late start,

way behind
the eight ball.

We'll see.
We'll see how it goes.

Ooh.

...90...

There we go.

Bam!

over $154,000.

Shawn's river of gold
is overflowing.

is really good.

It's basically 10%.

So, another nine times,
we'll be good.

We're on it.

We've just got to keep gold
coming in the box,

and get back out there,
and get to digging.

Narrator:

Ken:
What's going on?

Time for another
clean-up, huh?

Narrator: ...After pulling
double duty

as captain
and training instructor...

He was a little nervous
at first,

and then, he started
getting the hang of it. So...

Narrator:
...Captain ken kerr...

Yeah, let's
get her done.

Narrator: ...Along with
operations manager george young,

is looking for the myrtle's new,
round-the-clock team to pay off.

Ken: It was a good day,
training old greenhorn dave,

but I want to
keep this crown.

Every clean-out
needs to be a winner.

It looks like
that ancient riverbed

has still got a lot
of gold coming in.

But we'll see.

Well, let's pour it out,
and see what we've really got.

Ken:
Look at that.

Thank you very much.
Good job.

Narrator: 180 ounces is worth
a whopping $270,000.

And ken's dream of
a record-breaking

bering sea haul
is still alive.

to squawk at,

but we've got a long way to go
to hit that 4,000 ounce mark,

and it's not gonna be
summer forever.

We're gonna have to
push a lot harder.

I got to get that operator
tuned up some more,

'cause we're on it.

We're on a
smoking spot.

-Go get it, cowboy.
-Alright.

Narrator: With over half
the season in the books,

shawn picks up speed,

the kellys enjoy their summer's
biggest clean-out yet,

and vernon needs a mechanic.

Vernon:
Oh, come on!

Narrator: Next time on
"bering sea gold..."

vernon:
We got the wind coming, and the
ocean's gonna start swelling.

Ken: We've got to haul a*s
before that storm hits.

The wind's already picking up,
but we're gonna try anyway.

Emily: It's a risk,
but we can't afford

not to take risks,
at this point in the season.

It's a tough call
to make.

Man: Let's go!

Man #2: Some big swells
coming in.

It's a constant battle
mining in the bering sea.

-No storm's k*lling our season.
-Sos! Mayday! Mayday!

Man: 3 miles off the nome harbor
in catastrophic dire failure.
