Her name is Pat Morrison She's a

reporter for the LA Times and she's

going to share with us how a newspaper

gets made and what a reporter does Wow

what an interesting subject It takes a

lot of teamwork to get a newspaper out

You might want to ask her about all the

different jobs at the newspaper Okay we

will And I definitely want to ask her

about photographers I'm very interested

in photography That's great And how

except it's printed every day on paper

I'd like to do a column on what's

happening around the station like the

news department picnic and who's getting

a new job Yeah that's a nice idea Megan

not sure I could do an advice column

because I always have advice Or I could

do my own crossword puzzle I love words

and puzzles I bet you would do both very

well Maybe I should try to do both and

Animal Friends

Thank you very much Mr Forbes for

agreeing to an interview Oh it's my

pleasure Brooke So what is your angle

going to be with this interview i

thought we should do a story on each

member of the management team So when

did you first join the station oh I

first joined the station 15 years ago I

came straight out of college What was

your first job working in the tape vault

keeping track of all the tapes for all

the shows Was that fun no it was boring

but I was happy to be working in

television so I enjoyed it What's

happening Billy everyone's starting

their jobs on the newspaper What are you

guys going to do i want to work on the

design and layout of it I have some

ideas on how it should look I love art

Can I help you sure thing k*ll the host

If there's one thing we love on this

show it's our animal friends This next

video stars the fluffy white rooster

beautiful Himalayan cats and a lovely

old gray mare So let's visit them down

at the animal I went to the animal The

birds and the beasts were there The big

by the line in the room was combing a

hair You ought to have seen the monk He

jumped on the elephant trunk The

elephant seized and fell on his knees

And what became of the monk and what

monk our kids song's animal family is

very special to us They're very friendly

and so so sweet So let's be careful in

takes to make a newspaper So we invited

Pat Morrison of the Los Angeles Times to

explain it all to us today on Question

Time with Lindsay Bartles Welcome Pat

Thank you Aaron And thank you Pat

Morrison for joining us today Why do we

have newspapers we have newspapers

because we can't be everywhere we need

to be to know the things we know You

need to know about pollution about

what's going on in Washington about

what's going on in Russia And you can't

be in all those places but reporters can

We have reporters in China and Japan and

Africa All of them to bring news to you

about what's going on in the rest of the

world Wow So what do reporters do and

how do they do it reporters get up very

early in the morning and they talk to

their editors and they figure out what

is the thing I have to write about today

What should people know should they know

about government should they know about

the space shuttle should they know about

sports sometimes and we do like sports a

lot So who else works at a newspaper

well there are editors of course and

photographers to get the pictures you

see in the newspaper There are people

who write the headlines that you see

there on page one and in the newspaper

There are people who sell the

advertising that you look at There are

people who buy the comic strips There

are people who put together the

horoscopes to read to see what's going

to happen to you today There's a lot of

people who put together the newspaper

physically And the last person to touch

it is the person who delivers it to your

doorstep Cool So finally what advice do

you have for kids that want to work on a

newspaper well first of all you have to

be curious Are you curious i'm very good

That's a very good start You have to

want to know about other people in other

places people who speak different

languages and live in different ways

from you And you have to read the

newspaper every day in order to find out

about all those people too It's a pretty

good bargain isn't it yeah So thank you
