American performer Tucson Big Mountain

is coming i've been looking forward to

this oh me too and I'm really excited

that his friend Whirlwind is going to be

demonstrating the traditional hoop dance

all of us are really excited too a lot

of us have never met Native Americans

before you know kids the Native American

culture is very much tied to both a love

and respect for the environment so why

don't you work information about ecology

mr forbes mentioned ecology what is

ecology maybe it's on the computer let's

see it says here that ecology is the

study of how plants animals and nature

all get along with each other can you

give us an example the rain makes the

corn grow and man cuts it down to eat

and cows graze on what's left and then

pieces of corn go back into the ground

and grow again sounds like we're talking

about the circle of life here

i hope the rest of the team is getting

the scripts rewritten to include stuff

on ecology we haven't gotten to anything

yet we all know something about it why

don't we just make some changes until

the writers get it together okay Alex

and Aaron there's new script coming in

you'll have to read it on the prompter

chimpanzees normally live in forested

areas of Africa and spend most of their

time in trees which is where they find

video the chimps are here in North

America where local food like tomatoes

we used to have a great recycling

program but now everyone's gotten out of

the habit so we'll get it going again

all we need to do is set up an area for

our used paper plastic and metal and let

everyone know where they are hi what are

you doing we're setting up a recycling

program for our shelves oh that's so

good of you when we recycle we protect

the environments that are home to so

many of our animal friends and we cut

down on pollution which is good for

the African elephant's future is

threatened because the land they need

for grazing is being used for raising

cattle and other things a single

elephant can eat 500 lb of grass and

leaves a day and since they travel in

herds they need a lot of grazing land

there are some wonderful parks in Africa

that have been set aside for our

elephant friends but they still need

more there are things you can do to help

to find out more ask your parents

okay I think I'm getting the idea of

this circle of life ecology concept old

leaves and sticks turn back into rich

soil then you can plant things in them

again then after the plants grow up you

turn all the leftover plant stuff back

into soil again and you keep on going

exactly that's how an organic garden

works what do you plant in an organic

garden anything you want fruits

vegetables herbs flowers we should have

one right here at the studio what a

great idea we did really well working

things about the environment into our

song intros today but what I don't know

is how we're going to do this next song

a pirates life beats me but I bet the

life of pirates sailing to distant

shores searching for treasure and

fighting and you might be wondering how

that fits into our ecology theme of the

day and the answer is quite well

throughout the world's oceans there are

hundreds of species of fish plant and

animal life take over and the shipwreck

becomes a live reef and a favorite of

many divers and just think we have

Trail is already sure it was a trail

that went all the way from Texas to

Kansas and people used to ride it on

horseback to take their cattle to market

but why is it called the Chisum Trail it

was named after a very famous cattle

ringer Dustin Chisum who is Native

American Cherokee to be exact cool

today hey what does that mean that means

hello how are you i'm good how are you

pretty good good so what tribe are you

from well on my mother's side of the

family I'm a Mohawk Indian from

Katnawaga Canada on my father's side of

the family I'm Comanche from Anadark

Oklahoma and Apache from Arizona but we

go by our father's father so that makes

me Comanche can you tell us about what

you're wearing well this is typical of

the dress you'd see on the Indians back

in the 1600s first of all the leggings

you can see on the sides here what we

have is deer toes this would represent

that I was a hunter the bells were

originally European sleigh bells brought

over and used in trade the uh the cuffs

were originally for working in the brush

it protect your arms while you were

working out in the woods uh the

particular yolk that I'm wearing the

furs that are on it were actually Chipoa

Indian kills from 1884 and were traded

to the Hudson Bay Trading Company in

England now they were found later on

along with the documentation and were

given to me by a group of English Indian

dancers

wow so a lot of people would describe

you as an Indian why do we say Native

American instead well Indian was kind of

the nickname they gave us when they

first discovered America and uh they

thought they had actually gone to India

but we're really Native Americans so

what are you going to do for us today

well today what I'd like to do is drum

and sing for you one of our Navajo

chants that is sung for the hoop dance

so what is hoop dancing well hoop

dancing originally started way back

during the gold rush in the state of

California with all the covered wagons

crossing the desert a lot of stuff was

left behind including their water

barrels now the rings that were on the

water barrels we began using to dance

with the young children started putting

their feet in and out of them passing

them over their heads and uh developed

into quite a dance later on more and

more hoops are added to it and

Whirlwind's going to be out here to

perform for us and today he's going to

be working with 21 hoops wow so will you

perform for us sure
