The Beaver's Dam
It was a beautiful summer's day.
and the birds were flying high over the
countryside. Connie set out from her
little house and went straight to the
woods to find her friend Patch.
Hello, Patch. How are you?Hello,
Connie. I'm fine and I'm ready to play.
Me too! Me too!
While they decided what to play, Patch
and Collie went off for a little walk.
Well, what do you think, Patch?Should we
play hide and seek or should we play with
the ball?Hide and seek is lots of fun!
Just then, they saw a flower who looked
very sad. What's the matter, little
flower? And the flower told them his
problem. It hasn't rained for days and
days and my roots have almost dried out.
I need some water in soon Oh,
that's terrible. Is there anything we can
do to help?If you could just bring
me a little bit of water, I'd be very
grateful Don't worry, Mr.
Flower. We're always happy to help. We'll
get a bucket and bring you as much water
as you need. Oh Thank you. That's
so kindCome on Patch, let's
get moving. We have to find a place where
there's plenty of water. Yes! Yippee!
Connie and Patch set out to look for
water and on the way they met Belinda the
goat. Where are you
two going in such a hurry?Hello
Belinda, we need to find lots of water.
It's for the little flower whose loots
are nearly old laid out. How kind of
you to help him. The best place to
collect water is the Beaver's Dam.
There's a great big lake behind us with
plenty of water. Thank you very much,
Belinda. That's a very good idea. I know
where the Beaver's Dam is. My friends,
the fish, love playing in the lake.
Thanks again. Bye-bye.
Lots of rain had fallen earlier that
spring. and the beaver's dam was full of
bright, sparkling water.
All the animals who lived there were very
happy.
Patch and Connie brought a little bucket
to the lake. They spilled it with water
for their friend the flower. But as they
were about to leave,The beaver caught
sight of them.
Hey Connie, where are you going? That's my
water you've got in your bucket. Patch
and Connie looked at each other in
surprise. They went back to talk to the
beaver. But
Mr. Beaver, this water isn't just for
you, it's for everybody. And our friend
the flower needs it very much. We have to
pour it on his roots, because otherwise
they'll blay it completely. No, it's my
water. You two can go and look for your
own. If everybody took my water, my dam
would soon be empty and I'd have nowhere
to live. Patch and Connie
left the bucket of water and walked off
feeling very sad.
That baby's just being selfish. It's not
his water, really. I know. I've just had
a brilliant idea.
Patch thought that if Connie talked to
the Beaver, it would put him in a good
mood. Then when Patch took a bucket of
water, the Beaver wouldn't be so selfish
and silly about it. Hello
there. Oh, it's you, Connie. What is it
now?Nothing, I just wanted to say what a
lovely day it is today and how pretty the
flowers are with all the leaves on the
tree so beautiful and green. Everything's
so nice and I feel happy. Well, I'm very
glad you're so happy.
And while Connie talked to the beaver,
Patch filled the bucket with water again.
Hey Patch, what do you think you're doing
with my water?Come with
me and I'll show you someone who
literally needs it.
Hey, that's my water. Come here and give
it back immediately. Patch and Connie
decided to lead the beaver to the flower.
Come on Patch, let's run. When the beaver
sees our friend the flower, he'll stop
being so selfish.
Hee hee, what fun!
And they dashed through the woods until
they came to the little flower.
They brought me some water. The flower
was very happy. At last he had the
water that he needed so much.
Could you pour it right here?Nobody's
pouring anything anywhere. This is my
water and you can't have it. How can you
be so selfish, Mr. Beaver? Can't you see
the water's for everyone?You're right,
Connie. It's not really mine at all. I've
behaved myself very badly. In fact, I'm
going to pour the water out myself.
The flower felt very happy as the water
trickled down to its thirsty roots. Thank
you, Mr. Bever. It's wonderful. It's like
having a lovely drink. And thank you,
Connie and Patch, for finding me some
water and bringing it here so quickly.
Now that my roots are wet, I feel much,
much better.
Connie, I'm sorry for being so selfish. I
promise I won't behave like that again.
You're a good beaver, really.
From that day on, the beaver took the
little flower water whenever he needed
it, and nobody said he was selfish ever
again. That
night, when Connie went to sleep, she was
very happy. It's such a good
feeling to be able to help someone in
need. Sweet dreams, Connie.
The Ant and the grasshopper.
It was a beautiful autumn morning and the
birds were flying happily over the hills.
Connie and her mummy and daddy went out
for a walk in the Meadow.
Connie's mummy and daddy were very proud
of her. because she was so keen to
explore.
She loved to look at the little insects
with their colorful wings. Just
then, she spotted a grasshopper, the
happiest grasshopper in the meadow. It
was so funny to watch him hopping about,
and Connie followed him, feeling very
happy.
I wish I could jump like you. It looks
like such fun. The grasshopper
said he would teach her to hop just like
him, so Collie copied him exactly,
and they hopped, and danced, and played
all day long.
Just then,Along came some little ants who
were busy taking food to their nest.
Hello ants. Wouldn't you like to stop for
a minute and dance with us?Oh no, we
couldn't do that. Winter will be coming
soon and we'll have to store up lots of
food. Besides, we ants are hard
work as we don't have time to waste on
silly things like dancing. Oh, oh
dear, that's a shame. Don't let those
ants bother you, Connie. They're so
boring always working. They don't know
how to enjoy themselves.
Connie thought the grasshopper was right.
It was a lot more fun to play in the
field than to work. So when the ants had
gone, they carried on dancing just like
before. When
night began to fall, Connie said goodbye
to the grasshopper and went home.
On the way, she noticed that lots of
animals were taking food to their nests,
like the ants.
But days went by, and autumn turned
into winter. The weather got colder and
colder, and one very cold night,
the first snow began to fall.
When the sun rose next morning, the
countryside was covered in a soft white
blanket of snow.
Connie hadn't seen her friend the
grasshopper for a long time. She went to
find him in the woods so they could dance
and play together.
Poor grasshopper, he was very very
cold. Hello Mr. Grasshopper, what's
the matter?Let's jump and
dance together, that'll soon cheer you
up. Oh Connie I can't, I haven't had
any breakfast so I've got no energy for
jumping. Ohh Don't
worry Mr. Grasshopper, I'll help you find
some food. We'll go and visit my friends
in the wood, I'm sure they'll give you
something to eat.
And while the other animals played
happily in the snowy landscape, Connie
and the grasshopper set out to find some
food.
Finally, Connie stopped beside an old
hollow tree. This is the
tree where my friends the squirrels live.
I'm sure they'll have some food for you.
Oh good, something to eat at last. I'm so
hungry!
Hello squirrels, do you think you could
spare some food for my friend the
grasshopper?He hasn't had any breakfast
and he's very hungry. I'm very
sorry Connie, we'd like to help your
friend but we can't spare any food.
There's only just enough for the three of
us and it has to last us all winter.
Why don't you go and see the wild boar?
They always seem to have lots of food.
Thanks for the advice. That sounds like a
good idea. Bye bye squirrels and take
care of yourselves. I hope you have a
happy winter. Goodbye and good luck.
And Connie and the grasshopper set off
once again, this time to find the wild
boar. Connie was a very good
cow and she helped the wild boars to
collect some acorns.
Why thank you Connie, would you like an
acorn yourself? It's very kind of you to
offer, but I've already eaten today. My
friend the grasshopper here is very
hungry though, he's the one who needs
food. I'm sure he'd be delighted if you
offered him some of your delicious
acorns. Oh dear, I'm sorry Connie,
but we grasshoppers don't eat acorns.
Acorns are all we have I'm afraid, but
I've got an idea, why don't you go and
see the ants, they've got lots of food in
their store. They might have something
you like. Good idea. We'll go
and visit the ants. Hooray! Hooray!
Thanks for helping us out. Bye bye. Come
on then.
Goodbye! Bye bye,
And as quickly as they could, Connie and
the grasshopper went off to find theants.
Oh, there you are. Hello. Oh,
you all look very sad. Is anything the
matter?We're sad because we're bored,
Connie. There's no more work to be done,
but we don't know what to do with
ourselves. The problem is we spend all
year collecting food and now we've
forgotten how to have fun. I could show
you how to dance if you like. That's lots
of fun. Dancing lessons?That
sounds just fantastic. We'll give you
some fruit in return. So
could you nip back to the nest and fetch
a juicy blackberry?
When the grasshopper saw the delicious
Berry, he started to jump for joy
and everybody else joined in. The
ants danced all day. They never had so
much fun. Connie was happiest of
all because she knew that the grasshopper
would never go hungry again.
Connie. and the tin can The
sun was shining in the sky on a fresh
clear morning It was the kind of day that
Connie liked best because she could go
and play with her friends in the woods
Have fun Connie and make sure you play
safelyThere's no need to worry,
Mummy. I'll be with my friend Patch.
In the woods, the animals were playing
and looking for food, and Patch found an
old tin can. What's this?
At that moment, a worm popped out. and
said to Patch, It's a very old tin can.
Patch inspected his find carefully, and
then Connie arrived. Hi, Patch.
What's this funny-looking thing?It's an
old tin can. Oh,
goody. We could play with it and pretend
that it's a ball.
Well, Patch, shall we play a kick in the
can?
Patch and Connie kicked their new toy all
the way to the farm. Hello,
little chick. The little chick
kicked the can and started to play with
it. Patch and Connie were happy to see it
having so much fun, but then the chick
fell off and landed on the ground. Oh,
dear, did you hurt yourself, little chick?
Then Mother Hen came and took the chick
away. She didn't want her little one
playing with a tin can. Belinda the goat
was walking nearby and she saw what had
happened. Connie, you shouldn't be
playing with tin cans. It could be
dangerous. Oh, why is it
dangerous?Because it's got sharp edges
you could cut yourself on and it's dirty
and very rusty. You should find
somewhere safe to put it.
You're right, we should throw it away as
soon as possible. Yes, we'll take them a
long way away and then no one will hurt
themselves.
Connie and Patch set off from the farm.
and started looking for somewhere to put
the tin can
Hey Connie, we could leave that whole
thing behind those bushes
If we hide in here, nobody will find it
and we can go back to the woods and have
some fun
You can't drop your litter here, it's
where I live It's not a dump
You want my advice? You should throw
that tin can in the deepest part of the
river, and then it won't bother anyone.
Oh, thank you, Grouch. That's a very good
idea.
Down by the river, animals were enjoying
the free, fresh water. A frog
was watching a dragonflies loop the loop.
And the lizards were sunning themselves
on the bank.
Well, there's the river. Go on then,
Connie. Throw it in. Connie
went up to the riverbank. She could see
that the water was very deep, and she
threw in the can.
Finny the Fish saw the can on the
riverbed and brought it back to the
surface. He was cross.
Ohh What do you think you're doing
throwing old tin cans into the water? If
everybody behaved like you, the river
would become a rubbish dump and the fish
would have no clean water to live in. I'm
sorry, Finny. You're quite right. We'll
take it somewhere else.
Connie and Patch searched high and low
for a place to put the tin can. where it
wouldn't make a mess and where no one
would hurt themselves on it.
And although they looked very hard, they
couldn't find anywhere to leave it.
But then they saw Bill, Connie's daddy.
Maybe he would be able to help.
Hello, you two. Why the long faces? Is
something the matter? It's this old can,
Daddy. We don't know where to get rid of
it.
But there's no reason to throw it away.
Oh, really? What can we do with it instead?
You could find another use for it. It
would make a lovely vase, for example.
Oh, Daddy, that's a fantastic idea.
Yes, we could go and pick lots and lots
of flowers and put them in the can.
It was spring and there were flowers
everywhere. Soon Patch and Connie had
collected some of the prettiest blooms in
the forest.
Connie arranged the flowers in the tin
can and took them home to show her mummy.
That's the most beautiful vase of flowers
I've ever seen. It's lovely. I'm very
proud of both of you. Connie and Patch
were happy. They'd found a use for the
old tin can, but best of all,The woods
were clean and safe again. Nature is
beautiful and we have to take care ofher.
