Connie and the Fruit.
It was a beautiful spring day.
In the fields, the butterflies were
fluttering about while the birds were
flying high, looking for food.
Connie and her friend Patch were out for
a stroll.
Come on, let's have a race. I bet you
can't catch me. I love running and I'll
catch you. Just you wait. Look out,
Connie. Here I come
close by. A pretty butterfly
took off from a bunch of flowers.
And Grouch and Wally were eating some
tasty cherries. You can say that
again. These cherries, you picked are
absolutely delicious.
Ohh I'm going to fall over.
Oh, I'm sorry, that's our fault. We
shouldn't have left those cherry stones
lying around all over the place. But you
see, we didn't know what else we could do
with them, so we just dropped them on the
ground. Yes, you can't do anything
interesting with a cherry stone. Of
course you can. I can think of lots and
lots of things you can do with them. Or,
what kind of things, Connie?I'll show
you, but first we'll have to go to the
woods and collect pips and seeds and
stones from as many different kinds of
food as we can. We'll have lots of fun.
Come on, we're going to the woods!
So the four friends went looking for pips
and seeds and stones. Patch used
his nose to sniff them out, and Connie
looked under the old logs.
Grouch rushed about busily, but
Molly forgot what he was supposed to be
doing and stared at the sky.
They looked everywhere and soon they
had a good collection. Now
first of all, we should work out which
fruit each of these stones come from.
Well, I collected all the stones from
those cherries we were eating before. And
look Coddy, I found four great big peach
stones. Wait a minute Wally, I can see
five peach stones. Can you?I'll count
them. One, two, three and four and
this one makes five. Oh golly Connie,
you're right. So, what are we going to do
with them now?Well, I thought we could
use those pretty little cherry stones to
make a beautiful necklace. I like it
Connie, what a good idea. First we have
to make a little hole in each stone for
the string to go through. But how do we
make the holes and where do we get the
string?I'll go and see my friend the
woodpecker. He's very good at making all
kinds of holes. And my friend the spider
can spin us a thread.
Connie skipped happily through the woods
and soon she came to the tree where the
woodpecker lived. Hello Mr. Woodpecker,
it's me, Connie. Are you home?
Hello Connie, how nice to see you. Do you
need some help with something?I'd be
delighted to lend a hand. All you have to
do is ask. Well, actually, I was
wondering if you could make holes in some
cherry stones so we can make a necklace.
That's no trouble at all. Show me the
cherry stones and I'll put holes in them
as quick as a flash. Thank you very much.
I knew I could count on you Mr. Woodpecker
Meanwhile, Patch had managed to find
Spike the Spider
Hello Spike, I'm very glad I found you
here Well Patch,
it's nice to see you too What are you
doing in this part of the woods?
We need a thread to make a necklace,
could you make one for us?Please
Please! My pleasure, Patch. I'll
spin you a thread right away.
Patch was very excited and he
watched as Spike made a beautiful long
thread. Meanwhile,
Connie was back with her friends Wally
and Grouch.
Look, there are the cherry stones. You
can start making holes in them whenever
you want. And the woodpecker
got straight down to work.
Oh Mr. Woodpecker, that's great. Thanks
to you we'll be able to make a wonderful
necklace. I'm glad I could help Collie
and if you need me again you know where
to find me. At
that moment Patch came back with the
thread. Oh Patch, that's
perfect. It's so pretty. Yes,
Mike made it for me and it's wrong too so
it won't be. Hooray! We've got
everything we need.
Connie and her friends were ready to make
the necklace. It was a hot day,
so they went down to the river where the
air was cool. When they
finished the necklace, they were very
happy. It had turned out
beautifully. Hey Connie, what about the
peach stones I found? What are we going to
do with them then?Just then, a
busy little ant came hurrying
by. What's the matter, Mr. Ant?I
have to get across the river, but I don't
know how Don't worry little ant, we'll
help you I know what we can do We can
make a little boat out of one of the
peach stones A boat?But how?
Easy, Grouch, can you break a stone in
half with your paw?Of course,
just watch me
Look, half a peach stone makes a perfect
little boat Thank you very much, very
kind of youThat's what friends are for to
help each other out and we can make more
little boats if you need them The
little ant climbed into his boat and
sailed happily across the river and
Connie and her friends went back home
That night as she went to sleep Connie
thought that when you're with your
friends everything you do is special
It's so good to have friends
Sweet dreams, Connie.
The Talking Mountain.
The morning sun was shining on the
countryside, and Connie and her mummy and
daddy were up and about, bright and
early. See you later Mummy and Daddy.
I'm going to the woods to play with
Patch. Well play safely Connie
and don't be back late.
Connie went to find Patch and
togetherThey started to play with their
ball. George the crab
was pleased to see them having so much
fun.
The ball woke a sleepy tortoise. Who went
to find somewhere more peaceful to have
his nap.
I'm worn out, Patch. I'm too tired to
play with the ball. Me too. But what are
we going to play instead?I don't
know. Why don't we go and ask my
granny? She knows lots and lots of games.
After a long walk, Patch and Connie
arrived at her grandma's house.
They asked if she knew any games they
could play. We'd like to play a brand new
game, Grandma, something that's fun and
exciting. Yes, we like adventures.
In that case, I know just the game for
you. You have to go out and find a
mountain that can talk. That's
impossible. Mountains can't talk.
This is a very special mountain, and
since you two are very clever, I'm sure
you'll find it.
And while the water skater played on the
river, Patch and Connie looked for someone
who could help them find a talking
mountain.
Ohh Poor old me!
Hello Hedgie, we're looking for a special
kind of mountain, one that talks. Do you
know where it is?Sorry Connie, you won't
find a mountain like that anywhere. You
see, everybody knows that mountains can't
talk.
Oh dear, what a terrible cold.
Connie thought the best place to find a
talking mountain. was up in the hills
around the valley.
Patch thought that it was a very good
idea and they walked off together feeling
very happy. Hey Patch,
why don't we try talking to the mountain?
It might be able to hear us. Yes, let's
try calling it. Hello, mountain,
where are you?Mountain!
Where are you?They called and
called, but there was no reply. Hello,
mountain. If you can hear us say
something, we're calling. Oh, what a
terrible rocket!
I'm going outside to see who's making all
that noise Mr.
Mountain, can't you hear us shouting?
Oh, ohh look, it's Connie and Patch! Hey
there you two, what's all this shouting
about then?Oh, hello Tom, we're
looking for the talking mountain Do you
know where we can find it?I'm sorry,
but I don't think I can help you. I've
never heard of a mountain that could
talk. Poor
Patch and poor Connie. Tom didn't know
about the talking mountain either, but
they weren't ready to give up yet. And
they carried on the search.
Hatch and Connie went to visit all their
friends to see if anybody knew where to
find the talking mountain. But
nobody had ever heard of it.
Connie and Patch felt a little bit sad.
Would they ever find the mountain?
But just at that moment...
Patch, run! Come here quick! At last we
found the talking mountain!
Hooray!I said ah, and it said ah,
back to me. Now you say something back.
Oh water mountain, can you tell
me your name?
The mountain wants to know what my name
is too. I expect it's because it wants to
be my friend. Yes, I think it's a
very friendly mountain. Just then,
Belinda came by, she was the cleverest
goat for miles around. So you two, you
both look happy? It's because we found a
mountain that likes to talk. Yes, we
say things and it talks back to us. It's
great. It's a very friendly mountain too.
I'll introduce you if you like. This is
Belinda. Belinda. If you
hear that, it's calling your name. Would
you like to hear the secret of the
talking mountain?Oh yes, please
tell us the secret, Belinda. What you
can hear are your own voices bouncing off
the sides of the mountain. It's called an
echo. Ohh
It's true. Let's go and tell my granny
what we found out. She'll be ever so
proud of us. Very good. Now you know what
an echo is. Thank you for
telling us about it, Belinda.
Very happily. She'd learned what an echo
was, and Granny had baked a delicious
cake for tea. She thought grannies were
very clever indeed.
The Secret Den
Rain was falling on the woods and the
fields, and everybody had stayed inside
to keep dry. Well,
everybody except Dodger, the cat, that
is. He liked walking out in the rain.
Look at all this rain, Mummy. When's it
going to stop?Don't worry, Connie. I'm
sure the sun will come out soon and you
can go for a walk. Connie's
mummy was right. It wasn't long before
the rain stopped and a beautiful rainbow
appeared in the sky.
The butterflies came out to play over the
meadow and Connie went for a walk. I'm
going to the woods to play with bats. See
you later mummy. Well play safely Connie
and don't be back late.
Everybody was coming out of their houses
after the rain and enjoying the warm
sunshine.
Hatch and Connie were having a great
time, splashing about in the puddles.
When they'd had enough, they played hide
and seek. And then they played with their
ball. Patch and Connie were good
friends, and they always had funtogether.
But just when they were enjoying
themselves most...
Ooh, look, it started to rain again!
Where are they going?wondered the snails.
It's lovely out here in the rain.
A ladybird and a cricket took shelter
under a toadstool. Eventually,
Patch and Connie found a little cave,And
they ran inside to get out of the rain.
It's too leany to play out. Ohh
Hey, Patch, I've had an idea. We could
build a den in the woods and when it
rains we could go inside. That's a great
idea, Connie. That way we won't get wet.
We'll tell our friends. I'm sure they'll
be happy to help us build it.
The rain poured down all morning.
But then the clouds went away. And the
sun shone once more.
Hatch and Connie called on their friends
in the wood and asked for help building a
den. Everybody thought it was a
splendid idea.
The ants collected lots of leaves.
Wally collected twigs and
Grouch collected stones. I don't like
collecting stones. It's no fun at all.
Connie was collecting logs. Hey,
Grouch, what's the matter?Is something
wrong?Uh, nothing's the matter. I'm just
complaining because I like complaining,
that's all.
You know, when you're in a grumpy mood,
you're very funny, Grouch. The
bear cub and the ants collected two more
pieces of wood from the forest. And at
last, they had everything they needed to
build their den. But when
Connie tried to set up the first log,
it fell over. Oh dear, it
looks like we won't be able to build a
den after all. I know,
we could sharpen the ends of the logs,
that way we could stick them into the
ground. But how will we ever do
that?These logs are very tough.
You're right, but I know someone who can
help. I'll go and see Norbert the beaver.
He can use his sharp teeth.
Connie went down to the river to find
Norbert. She asked him if she could
sharpen the ends of the locks.
That would be easy for me, Connie. And
besides, I love building dens.
Connie was very happy. Only the two of
them went back to the woods together
Norbert used his strong front teeth to
sharpen the ends of the logs While Connie
and her friends looked on They were very
excited because they knew their den would
soon be ready
Look at that den, isn't it great? It's
beautiful, the best den in the world
Everybody who had helped build the den
felt very proud of their work
I hope it means soon That way we can all
go in and play out our new den
But just then, the wind started up and it
blew away all the leaves from the roof.
Ohh
Everybody was very sad.
Without the roof, the den's got no chance
of keeping the day note. And even if we
put the leaves back on, the wind will
only blow them away again. We did all
that hard work for nothing.
What a shame, I was so looking forward to
playing in our lovely new den. If only
there was some way to fix those leaves in
place. Patch's words gave Connie a
stupendous idea. Our
friend the spider could slow them down,
then they wouldn't blow away.
So Patch and Connie hurried off to the
part of the wood where the spider lived.
Hello Spike, how are you? We've come to ask
Well, you know I'm always ready to help a
good friend like you, Connie. What can I
do for you?Our den needs a roof.
Do you think we could sow some leaves
together so they won't go away?Of
course I could. That would be no trouble
at all. Hooray! Hooray! Hooray for
Spike! Hooray!
When Spike got to the den, he sowed the
leaves together as quickly as he could.
There we are. All the leaves are in
place. Connie pulled the roof onto the
den and not one leaf fell off.
Hooray! Hooray! I'm
sure we
won't get wet now. And
just as Connie and her friends went
inside the den, it started to rain.
It rained and rained, but not a drop of
water fell inside the den. All the
woodland friends stayed warm and dry.
All except Dodger, that is, the only
cat in the world who liked to walk out in
the rain.
