The creature that could change colour.

It was a beautiful morning. and the

butterflies were flying happily around

the fields. Patch and Connie were

playing with their ball while their

woodland friends looked on.

Hey, Patch, why don't we go and visit my

grandma?Yes, we always have a good

time when we go and see her.

Banny's very clever. I'm sure she'll

think of a new game that's lots of fun to

play. Patch and Connie set out

happily towards Grandma's house.

And Grandma was very pleased to see them.

Hello Grandma, we've come to visit and to

find out if you can teach us a new game.

Your games are so much fun. Well now,

you could play it looking for the

creature that can change colour whenever

it wants. There's no such animal.

Oh yes there is, and I'm sure that two

clever youngsters like you should be able

to find it. Well, thought Connie, if

Grandma says that we're clever, then I'm

sure we'll be able to find this creature.

And the two friends set off in search of

the animal straight away. It

wasn't long before they came across Hedgy

the Hedgehog, who had caught a cold.

Hello there,

Hedgy. Can you help us?We're looking for

an animal that can change colour whenever

it wants. I don't know where you'd find

one. All I know is that I've got the

worst cold I've ever had. Poor

Hedgy, thought Connie. He even catches

cold in summer. Not long afterwards,

Connie and Patch were on their way again.

I'm sure that the creature we're looking

for must be around here somewhere. We

could try calling out to it. You're

right. Hey, creature that can change

colour. Where are you?If

you're hiding, come and say hello. But

the mysterious animal didn't appear. Then

the two friends saw a big turtle. Connie

thought it might be able to help them,

and she said, Hello. Hello, Mr. Turtle.

Do you know any animals that can change

colour? You know, I've heard of them, but

I've never seen one. The ants travel all

over the place, though. They might know

where to find one. You're right. We

should go and talk to the ants. They

might be able to help us. I hope you find

the creature you're looking for. Thank

you, Mr. Turtle. Connie said goodbye to

the tortoise, and then she went with

Patch to find the ants.

Let's call out to them. Hello, ants.

Hello, there, ants. Are you at

home?Oh, look, it's Patch and Connie. I

thought it was you. What brings you to

these parts? We're trying to find a

creature that can change colour whenever

it wants. Do you know where a creature

like that might live?I'm sorry,

Connie. I don't know any animals that can

change colour, I'm afraid.

Connie was a little bit sad, because the

ants hadn't been able to help them

either. But she decided they

would just have to keep looking.

Together with Patch, she looked for the

mysterious animal everywhere she could

think of.

Just then, Patch and Connie saw Belinda,

the wisest goat for miles around.

Hello, you two. What are you looking for?

We're looking for a very strange creature

that can change colour whenever it wants.

Oh, I know what creature you're talking

about. It's called a chameleon. Do you

know where it lives? It often goes down to

the riverbank to enjoy the sun. If you

ask for fishes, I'm sure they'll be able

to tell you where to find it. Oh,

Belinda, I'm so glad we met you. Now we

know what the animal's called and we know

where to look for it. How exciting! Thank

you for helping us. Goodbye,

Belinda!

Connie and Patch walk down to the river,

looking out for their friends, the

fishes. It wasn't long before they met a

fish who was playing with a ball.

Excuse me, we're looking for an animal

that can change colour. Two fishes popped

out of the water. Ah, you mean the

comedian, don't you?He's probably a bit

further up the river. Oh, good, that

means we'll see it soon. Thank you for

helping us, fishes. You're very kind.

Hatch and Connie walked up the river. But

they couldn't find the animal that could

change colour. I

can't see any animals

anywhere. Cheer up, Patch. We'll find him

soon. Just wait and see. And Patch and

Connie carried on searching, until right

where the river began, they saw a

creature they'd never seen before. Do you

think this could be the animal we're

looking for?

Patch and Connie watched in amazement as

the chameleon changed colour.

Your Granny was right. This creature is

the most amazing thing I've ever seen.

Patch and Connie were so happy that they

jumped up and down in excitement.

That night, as she went to sleep, Connie

thought about the chameleon. It's

wonderful to find out something new.

Sweet dreams, Connie.

Where's Spike?

Winter was over and in the hot sun, the

last patches of snow that were left in

the valley. were turning to water.

It was a beautiful day, and Connie had

come to the meadow to find her friend

Patch.

Oh, somebody's crying. Who could it be?

Then Connie saw that it was her friend

Patch. Ooh, Patch! Hey,

what's

the matter? Why are you crying?I was

having fun playing with my ball, but then

it burst. Never mind Patch, don't

worry. We can go and play in the woods

instead. Yes, that's a

great idea. I love playing in the woods.

Then let's go. We're going to have a

great time. Patch and Connie walked and

walked until they came to the woods.

Isn't the grass lovely and green?

Patch and Connie stopped to look at their

friends, the ants, who were taking a pot

of honey back to their nest.

Hello!

Hello, Tom. That honey you're carrying

looks delicious. It is. Would you

like to try some?Oh, yes, I

love eating honey.

It's very tasty.

Oh, I'm worn out. That pot of honey was

very heavy and now I'm exhausted.

You need a rest. Patch and I will go and

ask Spike the spider to make you a

comfortable hammock. Oh, thank you,

Connie.

Connie and Patch said goodbye to their

friends the ants and walked through the

woods until at

last they came to Spike's web. But

Spike wasn't anywhere to be seen. Oh,

look, Connie. Spike's not at home. We'll

have to go and look for him.

Patch and Connie thought Spike might have

gone for a walk. So they went to look for

him in the woods. Then, all of a sudden,

Connie saw something that caught her

attention. Spike must be somewhere near

here. Look, I think that's one of his

threads. Patch and Connie followed the

thread.

Look, Connie, Spike must be behind the

bushes. But it wasn't Spike who was

behind the bushes. It was Maddy thesheep.

Hello, Patch. Hello, Connie. Why do you

both look so surprised? We were expecting

to see Spike the spider. We thought that

was one of his threads. It's wild wool.

I'm going to make a woolly hat for when

winter comes.

Well, we were looking for Spike the

Spider. You haven't seen him, have you?

As a matter of fact, I have. I saw him

walking along beside the river towards

the Meadow. ohh Thank You

Maddie

Connie and patch walked along the

riverbank looking for spike just then

they saw a thread moving behind a rock

that Connie it must be one of Spike's

clouds Hooray at last we found

him That's not a thread

it's my tail Oh I'm very sorry Ronnie I

didn't know it was you Did I hear you say

that you were looking for Spike Connie?

Yes we are do you know where he could be?

I think so not long ago I saw him

climbing in the big mulberry tree the one

that's covered in blossom Thank you very

much RonnieHi, you

two. Hope you find him.

Patch and Connie set off happily. They

were going to see the most beautiful tree

in the forest, and they were sure they'd

find Spike there. Look, Patch,

isn't that one of Spike's threads hanging

down? You're right, Connie. I think it is.

Oh, no, that's not a spider's thread.

It's one of the silk threads that the

silkworms wrap themselves up in. Those

are their cocoons hanging from the tree.

Ohh Connie saw that the owl was right.

Spike was here earlier, but he's gone

away now. And do you know where

he went, Mr. Owl?

No, Patch, I'm afraid I don't. I think he

left while I was having a nap on the

branch. Oh, honey,

it's no good. I don't think we're ever

going to find Spike. Oh.

Now, don't give up, my friends. Spike

often goes for a walk in the green

meadow. You might find him there. Thank

you very much, Mr. Owl. Goodbye.

Goodbye and good luck.

Patch and Connie went to the meadow and

looked everywhere, but they couldn't find

Spike the Spider. Just as

they were about to give up, a friendly

bird came flying by.

Hey, Henry the Owl said you were looking

for Spike. I know where he is. Oh,

hooray! At last, we're going to find him.

The bird led Patch and Connie to a

clearing in the wood. And there was

Spike, playing a lovely song with his

friends, the crab and the grasshopper. Oh,

listen to the lovely music. I think

you're really good musicians.

Hello there, Spike. Do you think you

could make me a hammock out of your

thread? But you're very heavy, Connie. If

I make you a hammock, your weight will

probably break it. ohh It's not for me,

it's for my friend Tom the Ant.

Spike was very kind and he started to

make a hammock for Tom without delay.

There you are, I've finished already.

Thank you Spike. It's a lovely hammock.

The best I've ever seen. And thank you

for going to all that trouble just for

me. You're the best friends in the whole

world. Come on, get in the hammock and

try it out.

It's so comfortable. How wonderful to be

able to lie down in a hammock of my very

own.

Patch, Connie and Spike jumped for joy

because they had been able to help Tom.

And that night, Connie thought there was

nothing in the world that could make you

feel as happy as helping your

friends. Sweet dreams

Colly

Baby Bird and his Nest

It was a beautiful day and all the

animals for miles around had come out to

enjoy the bright sunshine

Ronnie the mouse had found a tasty peach

and he was taking it home to eat with his

family. Ohh Hurry up Ronnie,

it's rolling away!

Well done Ronnie!

Patch and Connie were eating a delicious

breakfast of fresh fruit when suddenly...

Mummy mummy! Mummy mummy! Did you

hear that Patch?Someone's calling for

their mummy. Yes, Connie, and I think

they're in the bushes over there. Help

me! Ohh Poor little thing, he's

sad because he can't find his mummy.

Don't worry, little bird, I'll find her

for you. You're going to find his mummy?

Well, how are you going to do that,

Connie?It's simple.

All I have to do is find his nest. Great!

Then I'll come and help you look for it,

Connie. I think you should stay here and

look after this little bird. See you!

Good luck!

Connie set off happily to look for the

baby bird's mummy.

Before long, she saw a hole in the

ground. Could it be the baby bird's nest?

Hello, is there anybody there?Yoo-hoo!

Hello, everybody! Hello! Ohh This

isn't baby bird's nest. It's the house

where Millicent Mole and her family live.

Hello! And just then, Mother Mole

appeared. Hello, Connie. see you've met

my little ones. What do you think of the

house I've built for them?Isn't it cozy?

Yes, it's very nice, but you see, I'm

helping a baby bird find his mummy and I

thought that this might be his nest.

Ohh Corny, birds don't build their houses

underground, but do you know what?On my

way here I saw a little house at the top

of the hill. Perhaps that's the one

you're looking for. I'll go and see.

Thank you, Millicent.

While Connie was looking for the nest,

the baby bird was having a wonderful time

playing with Patch. See if

you can catch this!

Ohh Very

good! Get ready! There's another

blackberry coming your way!

After a very long week, Connie found a

little house at the top of a hill, the

one that Millicent Mole had told her

about. Hello?Anybody in

there?Hello there,

Connie. How nice to see you. What brings

you to these birds?Oh, hello, Sam. I'm

helping a little bird to find his mummy,

and I thought that this might be his

nest. But Connie, birds don't build their

houses under the roots of trees, and they

usually make their nests out of straw and

twigs and things like that.

Ah, I know where there's a nest built of

twigs. Thank you, Sam. I hope you have a

nice day. Bye bye, Connie.

When Connie arrived at the farm, Mother

Duck was taking her ducklings for a swim

in the pond.

Hello there, Rebecca. I'm looking for a

nest. You're looking for a nest?You mean

the one that my little chicks sleep in?

Oh, it's about where they sleep. Connie

realized it couldn't be the baby bird's

nest. What's the matter, Connie? Why are

you so sad?I'm trying

to help a baby bird find his mummy, and I

thought that this might be his nest. But

now I can see that it isn't. If you're

looking for a bird's nest, Connie, you

should look in the branches of the trees.

Really?Oh, thank you. You're a very

kind hen, Rebecca.

Connie was very happy. She went into the

woods straight away to look for the nest,

and soon she spotted one on the branch of

a tree. Could it be where the baby bird

lived?Hi Connie, what do you think of my

new house pretty smart, hey? It's a

very pretty nest, but it's not the one

I'm looking for I'm trying to help a baby

bird find his mummy. Do you have any idea

where I should look?Well Connie young

birds sometimes fall out of their nests

by accident So his nest is probably very

near to where you found him. Oh

Thank you Wally. I'll go straight back

and have a lookGood luck, Connie. I'll

help you find it. See you later.

Meanwhile, Patch was still having lots of

fun with the baby bird.

Hello there, Connie. How did it go?Did

you find that little friend's nest? No,

but Wally told me it's probably somewhere

very close by. Hey, look! A nest?

I've been looking for that nest

everywhere. And all the

time it was right here, just where we

found him. Olley!

Look, this is Mummy. Mother

Bird was very pleased to see her little

baby.

Mummy! Oh, at last I found you my baby.

Thank you for looking after my little

one. You've both been very good.

And when the baby bird got back into his

nest, up popped his brother and sister.

They were very pleased to see him. Patch

and Connie smiled happily to see the

whole family together again.

And when night fell, the baby bird

slept peacefully, snuggled up in his

nest. next to his mummy and his

brother and sister.

That night, Connie thought how important

it is to help little ones like Baby Bird,

and what fun it is too. Sweet

dreams, Connie.
