right I spy with my little eye something

beginning with an um sound

thing it's a thing that happens every

day

when the sun comes up in the sky and

what time is it now once upon a time

once upon a time there was a little boy

named Birdie who lived very close to his

granddad and birdie liked to visit his

granddad whenever he could now then

young birdie it's time you started

gardening Granddad said to birdie one

day

birdie was very excited me he said you

mean grow something all by myself

yes and I've dug a little patch here by

the side of the shed said Bird's

Granddad just for you wow said birdie

thank you granddad

I've called it Birdie's patch which

means you can plant anything you like

there said Birdie's Granddad birdie was

very pleased I'll grow apples and

tomatoes and flowers and a bush and a

great big tree he said and then Granddad

laughed now hold it right there he said

you mustn't run before you can walk

birdie didn't quite know what this meant

he could run and he could walk he'd been

able to do that for years but what he

couldn't do until this very moment was

grow things

what shall I plant first Granddad said

birdie eagerly

Granddad put his hand in his pocket and

pulled out a packet of seeds

on the front of the pack it was a

picture of a large orange carrot

birdie clapped his hands together and

shouted out loud carrots he said I love

carrots Right Said Granddad then we

shall plant some right away in Birdie's

patch

so Granddad gave birdie a shovel and

they both went to work

Grandad helped birdie dig a little Row

in the soil and showed him how to

sprinkle the seeds in rows and how to

cover them all back up again he also

showed him how to water the little seeds

to bed them in

when they finished Granddad stood up

beside Birdie's patch and said there now

all we have to do is wait so while

Granddad got on with his work birdie sat

down and waited and waited and waited in

fact he waited all morning

and when Granddad finally came back to

the shed to eat his lunch birdie was

still sitting by the little patch of

Earth staring at the soil Granddad

laughed again birdie he said what are

you doing

you said to wait said birdie but nothing

has happened they haven't even begun to

grow yet and I've watered them and

everything

Granddad looked at birdie and then at

the little patch of soil and smiled

you'll have to wait a little while

before you see any results birdie he

said

a few weeks at least

a few weeks oh no

birdie could hardly believe his ears

well things take time to grow you know

said Granddad I mean look at you how

tall are you now

birdie knew the answer to this because

his mom measured him every day against a

chart which hung on the wall in his

bedroom

nearly three feet he said proudly

and it's taken you five years to grow

that big said granddad

birdie thought about this and looked at

his little patch of soil once again

will it take five years for these

carrots to grow Granddad he asked

not nearly that Long Lap Grandad a few

months should do it oh good said birdie

he was pleased he wouldn't have to wait

five years

but you must remember birdie said

Granddad that when you're growing things

you have to be patient you must let

nature take its course

and now he said taking the lid off a

large plastic box it's time for lunch

and birdie and Granddad sat down to a

delicious lunch of cheese and pickles

and freshly baked bread

dig in said Granddad birdie didn't need

asking twice all that gardening had made

him really hungry

that'll make you grow even taller birdie

said Granddad then maybe we should give

the carrot some said birdie laughing as

the sun Shone down on him and his

granddad and on the carrots that were

growing quietly beneath the soil in

Birdie's patch

what are we guessing today tag it's an

animal elephant

no it's never an elephant and they're my

favorite

it's much smaller than an elephant toot

and it begins with a k sound

a k sound what begins with a cut hizzy

uh cow no it's smaller than a cow carrot

dude a carrot isn't an animal oh

it's something that wriggles a worm a

worm I've got it it's a worm that was

easy worm worm worm a worm doesn't have

legs and it doesn't begin with a cuss

sound no but it does wriggle oh give us

another clue Todd okay

it's something that crawls on a twig or

on the ground like this

like this something that eats until it's

big and round like this

like this something that sleeps for a

long long time then on a sunny day it

wakes up to find that it has turned into

one of those beautiful things that sits

on a flower and spreads its wings

a butterfly a butterfly I couldn't but

wait a minute a butterfly doesn't begin

with a cuss sound sh**t

oh right butterfly begins with a uh

yeah up sound ah I didn't say it was a

butterfly tizzy I said that it turned

into a butterfly oh it's an apple dude

almost

caterpillar caterpillar it's a

caterpillar red

get inside nice work and

if you look over here you'll see one ha

ha it's a caterpillar hooray

a caterpillar crawls on a twig or on the

ground a caterpillar eats till it's big

and round

long time then on a sunny day it wakes

to find that's turned into one of those

beautiful things
