04x07 - Street Hockey / Bubble Trouble / Chopsticks

it had been a really

lazy nothing to do kind of day katie

discovered that sometimes

even reading a book seemed like a lot of

work

orbee found out that you can think of a

whole lot of things to do just

lying on the floor and they both learned

that if you started counting all the

pieces of wool

in the carpet you would be there a long

long time

in the middle of the afternoon katie and

orbee had done everything that they

could think of

mom gave them each an ice cream cone and

they sat out on the front steps eating

them

came over and sat with him and so did

andy and

well soon a lot of their friends were

sitting on the steps and

every single one was thinking the very

same thing

there was nothing to do

just as arthur was saying that it was

the most boring day in his whole life

mrs perette walked by she was delighted

to see all the friends having so much

fun together

when orbee burgled that they weren't

exactly having fun because they had

nothing to do

she stopped in her tracks she just

couldn't imagine such a thing

with a whole bunch of friends there were

tons of things to do

friends all looked at her glumly

dad popped his head out to see if they'd

thought of anything yet and

everybody including mrs perette shook

their heads

at that moment tom rolled down the

street on his rollerblades

seeing tom gave mrs pratt a splendid

idea she told

everyone that when her children were

young

they used to play street hockey out in

front of tom's house

tom lived on a cul-de-sac that meant the

street ended and there was rarely

any traffic at all there was absolute

silence for a minute and then all of the

friends at the same time

burst out in a loud cheer

street hockey was the best idea ever

that she really didn't know how to play

and yi ping added that she didn't either

and well suddenly everybody realized

that they weren't too sure

how to play street hockey at all

mrs perez smiled broadly the thing about

street hockey was that

you didn't have a lot of rules and the

only thing that mattered was that

everybody had fun

in seconds the entire group of friends

disappeared

soon they were all gathered at toms with

hockey sticks and even ordinary sticks

and everyone was ready to play

mrs peret walked down the street toward

the crowd with a great

big beach ball but tom grimm

ed chuckled he said this is going

to be fun he told the others well

mrs perez explained that all you had to

do was get the ball through the other

team's goal and the fun of it

was it didn't really matter how except

that you couldn't actually touch the

ball with your hands

orbee tucked his hands behind his back

to remind himself

at each end of the explanation tom set

up the

holes they were marked with garbage

again

which everybody thought was very funny

then mrs perez divided their friends up

into two teams and the fun began

she would be the referee and she blew a

little whistle

to start the game she threw the ball

into the center and orbee was so excited

he forgot to use his stick and he gave

it a great big kick

he looked at mrs peret as the others

chased the ball he thought that he had

done something wrong because

hockey was meant to be played with

sticks but mrs peret told him he'd done

a wonderful job

and with that he was a pink blur

chasing the ball

katie hit it once and instead of going

anywhere it shot right up into the air

and bounced off of dad's head

and everyone laughed including dad

well the ball shot up and all over the

place sometimes

it was hit toward one of the goals and

then another player would

hit it back tom shouted encouragement

and dad was calling to players on both

sides

he was helping them to see what they

could do

[Applause]

at the next play dad whispered something

to katie

she giggled and everybody wondered what

it was

when the whistle blew dad picked katie

up and chased after the ball

that katie kicked the ball and finally

dad held her right over the ball and she

picked it up with her legs and

dad held her up and hurry to the cold

tom

tom who was the goalie tried to stop

that but he was laughing so hard that

kitty was

able to toss the ball right through and

when they looked back over the game

field everybody

was sitting on the ground laughing

street hockey with almost no rules

was turning out to be a whole lot of fun

then arthur had a terrific idea he

whispered to orbee who nodded his head

and got ready

and when the ball was thrown into the

center again

orbee held it still and arthur bent down

and scooped the ball up inside his big

baggy shirt

and he ran for the goal

again everybody thought it was so funny

and i have to say

it looked really silly

and when he got to the goal mom was

there and she picked arthur up

and tried to shake the ball out to

arthur

arthur was laughing so hard he had tears

in his eyes

in fact mom did shake the ball out and

the ball bounced

right between the garbage pail lids

arthur's team cheered and jumped up and

down

i have to tell you the whole street had

fun that day

and in the end dad invited everyone over

for a barbecue to

celebrate all the great players in the

game

so the lazy nothing to do day turned out

to be one of the best days of that

summer

and i have to tell you that a few weeks

later they had another game

and then the neighborhood championship

which everybody won

mrs peret gave out huge buttons with

ribbons on them

and soon the street hockey game became

an annual event

which meant they played it every year

and you know if street hockey sounds

like fun to you

you should ask your parents to find a

safe place for a game

and invite your friends to play i just

happen to know that

if you do you'll have a lot of fun

just like katie and orbee did

laughing

katie discovered that when you play with

two friends at the same time

as dinnertime got closer and closer they

were all feeling like playing some more

loud laughter

so when mom came to the door they were

all surprised to see her

what it was

mom told them that katie and orbee had

been invited for supper into sleepover

well all three friends said nothing for

a tiny moment and then they all

pooped and jumped up and down with glee

as soon as the bedroom was tidied and

the three of them hurried out the door

blowing kisses to mom and dad

katie and orbee carried over their

sleeping bags as yiping's father

led the sleepover parade to their house

at yi ping's house the dinner was almost

ready

yi ping's mom asked the three fins to

put the overnight bags upstairs

and wash their hands

in yi ping's bedroom there were three

sleeping bags on the floor

each had a flashlight beside it the

friends looked at each other

clearly this was going to be a fun night

in a wink they're all sitting at the

table washed and ready for food

when yi ping's mom brought these serving

dishes in

there were all kinds of interesting

things to look at

some were so pretty it was hard to

imagine eating them

yi ping's mom put a little of each on

their plates and she told katie and

orbee that

chinese people ate differently than

north american people

and so she was going to let them try the

food and see what they liked

once they knew they could have more

there were little strange shapes that

turned out to be chicken in the lemon

sauce

there were noodles but they didn't have

spaghetti or cream sauce on them

they had vegetables mixed in with them

and they were yummy

there were little envelopes of food that

had more chicken and vegetables

in them you had to dip them in a plum

sauce

and they were terrific as katie and

orbee looked at their plates they

couldn't wait to try it all

but there seemed to be one problem katie

and orbee looked at each other

there were no forks or spoons

yeping picked up two sticks that were

lying beside her plate and seemed to

flick them in the air

she looked at her mom to make sure it

was time to start and

and with the sticks she picked up one of

the lemon chicken pieces

then popped it into her mouth

orbee was very impressed that she was so

clever and brittle

their sticks too

and tried to flick them so that they

could work with them like yi ping

katie went flying across the room and

orbeez hit him on the end of his nose

no one said anything for a second and

then the friends just couldn't help but

they burst out laughing again so did he

ping's parents

and then yiping's dad got up and went

around to pick up the stick

katie had lost he brought katie a clean

one from the kitchen

and moved behind her

he placed both sticks in her hand and

showed her how to make them

into good picker uppers katie tried to

pick up the lemon chicken but

it sticked right out orbee tried to copy

what they were doing

yi ping helped him soon he had the

sticks in his hand properly and it

looked

pretty good as he picked up a whole mess

of noodles

but as he lifted them toward his mouth

they

fell out all over the place orbee was

embarrassed but

yi ping's mom told him not to worry that

everyone had to

learn how to use chopsticks orbeez

smiled weekly and

tried again this time he managed to get

a few noodles to his mouth

and he smiled because they tasted so

good

katy meanwhile was still chasing her

lemon chicken piece

it looked so good and she was so keen to

try it but each time

that she got the sticks to hold it it

slipped out and across her plate

well i assume it was so much giggling

and laughing at the table that there was

next to no one eating

yi ping's father showed kitty and then

orbee how to hold the chopsticks again

and this time it seems that their

fingers understood

slowly orbee lifted noodles and kitty

lifted a piece of lemon chicken

and the food made it all the way to

their mouth

no one made a move when yeeping giggle

katie tasted the lemon chicken it was

yummy

orbeez slid the slippery juicy noodles

right into his mouth

after that first bite they were so proud

of themselves they

grinned from ear to ear and once they

had the hang of the chopsticks

they tasted everything chinese food was

wonderful once you got it into your

mouth

katie told ye ping that she thought

yiping was amazing for knowing how to

use them so well

yi ping's mother told katie that when

they moved here

yi ping had to learn how to use the

knife and fork the way katie did

orbee tooted that everybody was learning

something

that night after a story about a unicorn

in chinese stories

the three friends piled into their

sleeping bags and made their flashlights

dance all over the ceiling

and when they finally fell asleep katie

dreamt of the chopsticks

and how she was very good at eating with

them

and orbee dreamt of the chopsticks and

his noodles

and how he was very good at eating with

them

and yi ping dreamt that her two best

friends

were with her night and day in the end

all the dreams were true

katie and orbee thought it was fun to

get better and better at eating with

chopsticks

and do you know that all over the world

different people cook and eat in

different ways than you do

isn't that interesting and if you're

practicing getting better at a new skill

right now the more you practice

the better you'll be and i happen to

know that

if you want you can be very good

at almost everything
