04x12 - Belkis / Pretty Like Polly / The Wallet

[Music]

it had been an autumn morning full of

puzzle races

katie discovered that to make the race

fair you'd each better have the same

number of pieces

or we found out that even though a

puzzle piece is the same color as the

others

it doesn't mean it fits and they both

learned

that mixing up the pieces from two

puzzles was

not a good idea

the two friends were sitting on the

front steps trying to sort the

puzzle pieces out a huge moving van

rolled up the street

orbee tutored at katie to come with him

and see him

[Music]

mom called to them to stop at the edge

of the sidewalk

as the moving van backed up the driveway

across the street

the two friends watched carefully they

were watching for things that belonged

to kids

they'd done the very same thing before

when ye ping moved in

at first there was just a couch and a

dresser

but then a bicycle came out with some

other boxes

the bicycle was small enough to belong

to someone katie's age

katie and orbee danced on the sidewalk a

new friend was moving in

katie grabbed orbee by the shoulders and

told him that they could make a

welcome to the neighborhood package if

they hurried

orbeez spun on his heels and was into

the house before katie could even take a

step

katie giggled as orbee peeked out at her

inside the friends said right to work

katie made a drawing of herself a dorby

orbee asked mom for some cookies and

juice boxes

he wrapped them up then they both went

out to the garden in the backyard and

picked some flowers mom had pointed out

soon they were ready mom walked them

around the big truck

and went to the door with them when they

rang the bell

a mover hustled past them with a big tv

then a little girl came to the door

katie and orbee smiled their friendliest

smiles and

handed her their welcome package

she looked at it and then looked worried

and ran for her mom

she tugged her mom to the door her mom

had an

accent that katie and orbee had never

heard before

and it made it hard to understand her

she introduced herself her name was

suzanne

[Music]

and her daughter's name was belkis

katie and orbee thought that was the

most beautiful name

in the whole world

mom and suzanne shook hands but katie

and orbee were disappointed because

belka's hid behind her mama didn't say

hi

suzanne pulled belkas forward and

explained to katie and orbee that

belkas didn't speak any english

they had lived far away and had never

really been in a place where it was

spoken

acadia and orbee couldn't imagine a

place so far away that

they didn't speak english

but they were still very excited to meet

their new friend

belkas reached out her hand and said

something that neither katie or

orbee understood suzanne smiled at them

and said

that it meant nice to meet you

katie and orbee told her they were happy

to meet her

katie asked if she and orbee could show

belkas their huge sandbox

and when her mom explained belkis broke

into the most beautiful smile

and she grabbed her jacket they were on

their way

in a shot they were in the backyard

belkas loved the great big sandbox

orbee gave her the best shovel and they

all began to play

it was when katie suggested that they

make a huge castle

so orbee could show belkas how good he

was that they first ran

into trouble orbee began to pile a sand

up in front of them and he raced in to

get a cup to make the towers

belkis thought orbee was giving her more

sand to use and

although she didn't really need it she

wanted to be polite to her new friends

so

she dug some out and added it to her

wall

when orbeez raced back out again velkas

could tell by the look in his face that

whatever she had done she'd done the

wrong thing

she felt a little tearful her eye and

catching her throat

but orbee wasn't angry at all he was

just thinking of how he could tell

belkas about the castle

velkas really wanted to run home but

orbee smiled at her and

put up his finger to wait he showed her

that he would be one minute and he raced

inside again

belkis looked at katie who gave her a

big smile

it was hard when you couldn't say it's

no problem

katie said it anyway even though she

knew belkis didn't understand

belkas did understand from the sound of

her voice and her big friendly smile

that there was nothing wrong and she

dried her tears

just then orbee came out the back door

in his king costume

belka smiled and katie laughed because

orbee could be just so funny when he

played dressed up

orbee came over to the sandbox and

pointed to the pile

then he pretended to walk through a

great big door

and pointed to the sand pile again

belkas clapped her hands and

pointed to the sand pile she said a word

that sounded a whole lot like

castle but it was in her language

katie and orbee both said yes and belka

surprised them by saying

it's no problem to orbee

belka smiled at katie wanting to know if

she got it right

and katie and obi both repeated no

problem

with gales of laughter the new friends

built an extraordinary castle

belkas had some clever ideas which orbee

just loved and soon the amazing thing

was finished

mom and suzanne came out the back door

to see how they were making out

belkas ran up to suzanne and grabbed her

hand tugging

her toward the castle she said the word

castle again in her language

and katie and orbee repeated it too

mum laughed she was so happy and then to

suzanne's surprise she said

no problem

everybody clapped for belkas and the new

friends knew that

although they didn't understand each

other completely

there were lots of ways to communicate

[Music]

if you have a new friend move into your

neighborhood that doesn't speak your

language

i hope you will work hard to make them

feel welcome

and as you are teaching them your

language maybe you'll learn a little of

theirs the more languages you speak

the more people you can talk to i just

know

everybody is going to want to

talk to you

did you know there are all sorts of

guitars

some are big and some are small some

make high sounds

and some make low ones some have six

strings

and some have more they all make

beautiful music

it had been a day of giggles

katie discovered that when orbee tooted

his favorite story in rhyme

it it was really funny and when we found

out that when they played checkers with

dan

he made a whole lot of silly sound

effects

and they both learned that if you put

music on mom and dad

do some really crazy dancing

the family had enjoyed their saturday

together

mom and dad had spent the whole day

doing katie and orbee things

but they were going out on a date

together later that night

mom served katie and orbeez supper early

they were just finishing dessert when

the doorbell rang

orbee whizzed out of the kitchen opened

the front door

standing on the stoop was tom with his

girlfriend polly

they were going to babysit for the

evening orbeez

tom and paulie and invited them in

when mom and dad came down the stairs

they all clapped they looked fabulous

mom had on a long gown katie couldn't

even see her toes

dad had on a black and white suit with a

big wide belt

that explained it was called a

cummerbund and it kept him from

falling out of the suit kenny and orbee

giggled

they they knew he was joking dad and mom

swept out the door looking a lot like a

prince and a princess

perhaps that was when katie started

thinking about beauty

[Music]

when she turned around to tom and polly

she noticed how pretty polly was

her mom had looked beautiful in her

dress and polly looked beautiful in her

jeans and t-shirt

and katie wondered what she could do to

look pretty like them

as they play the game of charades katie

looks at paulie's face

her face seemed perfect to katie when

charades ended katie went upstairs to

get a book

it was going to be fun because tom was

almost as good at reading stories as bad

she popped into the bathroom and looked

at herself in the mirror

her face didn't look beautiful at all it

looked

well to katie it looked plain everyone

else was much more beautiful than her

even orbee had spectacular pink spots

sometimes mom wore lipstick katie was

sure polly did too

[Music]

maybe if she put lipstick on she'd be

beautiful like polly

[Music]

in mom's room katie found some red

lipstick

she slid it across her lips as best she

could

and when she checked her face in the

mirror she realized

she still didn't look pretty like polly

it seemed to katie

that maybe paulie also wore red stuff on

her cheeks to make them stand out

kitty found some brownie red powder

it had a big fluffy brush with it katie

put the powder all over her face to see

if it would help her look beautiful

when she peered into the mirror she

thought it had helped a whole lot

but her eyebrows didn't seem to show up

much

katie drew a black pencil line around

him

[Music]

while it didn't look quite right katie

thought it did make her look better

then she thought she remembered paulie

had eye color on her eyelids

she covered every inch of her eyelids

with blue

pleased with herself and feeling very

pretty katie headed downstairs

tom and paulie were reading a story to

orbee making all kinds of funny voices

orbee was laughing quite a bit so when

katie walked in he didn't even look up

he just waved his arm to katie to come

and sit with him

tom was pretending to be the wicked wolf

in the story

just as he was making a very silly wolf

sound

[Music]

he looked up and he saw katie he was so

shocked to see her with a whole lot of

makeup on that he

he stopped in the middle of his growl

and that made orbee and polly look up

too

paulie looked at katie and smiled

feeling very beautiful katie sashayed

over to sit beside orbee

he tooted that she had made a terrific

clown face

well that shocked katie she looked at

polly she noticed that she really didn't

have colors on her face at all

and katie's feeling that she looked

beautiful turned into

a feeling that she looked really silly

orbee put his arm around katie he hadn't

meant to hurt her

katie felt too embarrassed to stay for a

hug she raced up to the bathroom and

closed the door

tom was really puzzled it had been a

great clown face that should have made

her happy

he started to get up to go to her polly

asked tom if she could go instead

she told tom and ormy that the problem

was that

katie hasn't meant to make her face look

like a clown

tom and orbee looked at each other

surprised

gently polly knocked on the bathroom

door

katie didn't want to ever see anybody

for the rest of her life

but she opened the door as polly walked

in

katie told her that it wasn't meant to

be a clown face

olly smiled and explained that she knew

katie said that

she just wanted to be pretty like her

with some warm water and soap polly

carefully washed the makeup off and

patted katie's face dry with a little

towel

[Music]

polly put her arms around katie and

turned her so

they could both look in the mirror katie

couldn't see where her beauty was

but polly showed her she told katie that

beauty came in

all different kinds of packages katie

had her very own kind of beauty

and yes one day if she wanted to wear

makeup she could

but right now she was just too beautiful

to cover up

katie was astonished and looked at polly

but i don't look like you

katie told polly smiled and touched

katie's nose

she was glad katie didn't look like her

if everyone looked the same

it would be boring

instead katie had her own original

made to order beauty that made her

precious

and pretty to everybody else

and for the first time that day katie

looked in the mirror

and saw that in fact the face looking

back at her

was pretty just the way it was

when katie and paulie went downstairs

tom and orbee could tell everything was

all right again

tom told katie that she looked much

better

or be burbled that he hadn't meant to be

unkind

she was very precious to him she was

happy that he liked her just the way she

was

and i'm sure you know that you are

unique and original

just like katie and even if you don't

see it when you look in the mirror

you should know that i think

you are truly beautiful

did you know going to a restaurant can

be a special treat

there are lots of different kinds of

restaurants that your family can visit

for a fancy restaurant you better get

dressed up and be on your best behavior

some restaurants are not so fancy and

then

there are some restaurants just for kids

[Music]

it had been a day of finding things

katie discovered that if you lose your

toy car in the fall

you might just find it in the spring

orbee found out that when the snow

starts to melt you might find

a shiny penny on the ground and they

both learn that

spring hides the tiny crocuses in the

snow and they pop up

when it melts

the bright spring day made mom feel like

taking katie and orbee out for a

neighborhood cruise

that meant they would walk around the

block and wave at their neighbors

katie and orbee loved the idea and

pulled on their jackets to keep warm

it was spring that it wasn't summer

yet as they walked they waved at yi

ping's dad

sweeping out the garage mrs perette was

hanging some laundry out to dry in the

sun

[Music]

tom was in his driveway greasing up his

bicycle

and arthur's family was getting rid of

all kinds of

old junk orbee burbled that spring sure

made everybody busy

mom told him that she thought it was the

bright sun and the warmer air

everybody felt cheerful and a whole lot

like

getting outside as they walked along

katie asked mom a question

orbee didn't exactly hear because he had

stopped

there in a dirty old spring snowbank was

a brown leather wallet

orbee went to call to mom but she and

katie were walking ahead and talking so

he carefully picked it up it was a

little bit wet

but otherwise it looked good

he hurried to catch up because they were

almost home

orbee raced behind them and hurried at

the front step

as they walked in the door the fall man

and mom picked it up

orbee could tell it was a business call

by the way mom said

yes speaking so he waited

he was sitting waiting when katie

clomped down the stairs in a big floppy

hat

and high heeled shoes she wanted orbee

to play house with her

orbee loved pretending to be dad so he

hurried up behind katie who plumped all

the way back

up the stairs or be put on a tie

and a way too big jacket the sleeves

were rolled up

and he stuck the wallet in the pocket

just like dad did

first katie pretended to cook breakfast

and orbee pretended

he was late for work he kissed katie's

cheek and told her that

he was late then he had no time for

breakfast

katie told him to sit down it was all

ready and he needed to eat something

even if he was late he held out a toy

plate and he smiled at her

he took the plate and pretended to

gobble down his breakfast he was really

being silly and katie laughed

then he gave the plate back to katie he

pretended to wonder

if he had enough money to buy lunch when

he got to work

he did it just like dad always did and

he pulled out the wallet

the one he'd found on the side of the

street and opened it up

[Music]

it had a whole lot of money in it

and katie was surprised to see so much

money

ask orbee where he got the wallet or be

burbled that he found it in a snow bank

someone must have thrown it away he was

going to ask mom if he could keep it but

she was on the phone so

he decided it would be okay to play with

it

katie pulled off her big floppy hat she

had a splendiferous idea

they could play store with all that

money

the two friends leapt into action and

set up a store the toy box

was the counter and katie put all kinds

of toys onto it

orbee got out the toy cash register and

set it up on a chair

katie was going to be the store owner

and orbee was going to be the customer

orbee decided he would be dead again

they had a great time and orbee playing

dad bought almost

everything in the store for his two

young people at home

[Music]

his arms were loaded he could

he could barely carry all the toys that

he had bought

katie had to stuff his change into his

pocket and money was sticking out

everywhere katie was counting a fistful

of money

as mom walked through the door well i

have to say that

mom was completely shocked to see so

much money

sticking out of pockets and on the table

and in katie's hands and

she stopped their game and asked where'd

it all come from

orbee put his arm load of toys down and

pulled out the wallet he tilted that it

was all in the wallet

mom was so shocked that she sat on the

bed she asked her friends to give her

all the money and they did and mom

looked to the wallet and found a

driver's license with the name of the

person who owned it

she told orbee that when you find a

wallet

it was important to return it

orbee explained that it was sitting in

the snow bank he was sure somebody just

threw it away

mom put her arm on orbee's shoulder

she explained that no one would throw

away a wallet with that much money in it

it must have

fallen out of this man's pocket without

him noticing

mom was sure that when the man got home

he would have been very upset at losing

his wallet

orbee looked at mom he had never ever

thought of that

he wanted to call the man right then and

tell him that he had found it

[Music]

that evening a man who owned a wallet

rang the doorbell

when he saw his wallet he gave a big

sigh

whoo and then to orbee surprise

he picked him up and gave him a a huge

hug

thank you my young friend or be tutored

a happy whoopee and katie did a little

dance too

the man put orbee down and then opened

his wallet

you made me very happy today he said you

have done

a good deed his wallet contained

something very precious to him

katie and orbee were sure he was talking

about the money so they were surprised

when he showed them the precious thing

there inside part of the wallet was a

picture of two little children

it was his favorite picture of his kids

and he had been very sad when he lost it

last winter

he said now i have it back all because

of your good deed

well the truth is that orbee had never

felt so important in his life

as you can imagine katie was very proud

of him too

and that's the way it is when you do the

right thing and as he and katie went to

sleep that night

they both still had that good feeling

and i just know that

when you do a good deed you'll feel that

way too
