05x08 - The New Neighbour / A Perfect Place for Us / Charisse and the Soccer Game

it had been an exciting day

katie discovered that a boring morning

can turn into an adventure when you find

a toy you thought you lost

or we learned that if you press your

nose right up against the window

you leave a steamy imprint and they both

found out that

even when you think nothing new is

happening it can be happening

right under your nose

katie and irby were having a good time

in the front yard they each had a big

scoop of birdseed that they scattered

under the little tree

katie made a pattern with hers but orbee

just made a pile

then orbee noticed a little bird's nest

on a branch

he wanted to climb up and get it but

katie reminded him that it was

somebody's house

and they would miss it

it was at that moment that mom brought

out a pie that she'd baked that morning

it was still a little warm and she asked

katie and orbee to

take it over to the new neighbors who

had just moved in across the street

katie checked for cars orbee carried the

pie

very carefully even though as you can

imagine the

delicious smell made it hard for him to

concentrate

[Music]

as they stood in the doorstep katie said

that she hoped the new neighbors had

kids

then they could have new friends adults

were terrific but

they were not always as much fun orbee

thought everybody could be friends

soon a woman opened the door she was

older than mom

katie and orbee held out the pie

together and gave her their very best

welcome to the neighborhood smile the

woman loved the pie and said

apple was vincent's favorite or be

beamed at katie

if they liked the pie they must like

katie and orbee

just then a man came to the door and

peeked out at katie and orbee

from behind the woman he introduced

himself his name was

vincent and his wife's name was adele

vincent and awed over the delicious pie

and he told them he was going to enjoy

it

he'd only shared with his wife if she

was good

adele laughed and vincent winked at them

katie thought he was a lot like her dad

maybe they could all be friends

katie asked if they had any children

vincent smiled and put his arm around

adele

they had two children katie

and orbee were delighted hooray he

tooted orbee

they like children adele said that their

kids were actually

old enough to be mommies and daddies

themselves

in fact some of them did have children

adele and vincent had three

grandchildren

all together katie and arby smiled and

looked at each other

anybody with three grandchildren had to

like children

then vincent said when their

grandchildren came to visit that he

hoped katie and orbee would come and

play with him

his eyes twinkled and he told the two

friends that he was sure his

grandchildren would like to play with

them

and he was sure that they'd come and

visit often

everybody he left adele thanked katie

and obie for the

scrum delicious pie she told them as

soon as all the boxes were put away

she would invite their family over for a

visit

as katie and orbee looked both ways and

then crossed the street

katie told her friend that vincent and

adele were terrific

too bad they were grown-up new friends

or be agreed that you couldn't really

play with

grown-up friends katie looked at him

inside

that was true well except

on special occasions as they entered the

house

they had no idea how wrong they could be

the next day katie and orbee were in

their bedroom playing a game of get the

marble in the pot and the doorbell rang

katie looked out the window to see who

it was nobody was there

as katie turned away from the window she

saw

an envelope on the ground

well the friends almost spun around each

other as they raced to find out what was

in it

when they both tried to grab the

envelope it swirled up in the air and

orbee had to do a

triple spin and the flip to catch it

before the wind took it away

the envelope had their names on it

katie took it to mom who told her to go

ahead and

rip it open katie did

inside she found a thank you card

it was when she opened it up that they

got the best surprise

two funny pictures slow down

one was of katie and one was a warby on

the card was written

to our two new friends

mom told katie and orbee it looked as

though they'd made new friends who were

adults

she also told katie and orbee that

vincent was a very famous sculptor and

artist

the pictures he had drawn of them were

very special

katie looked at hers it made her look

kind of funny and

she laughed orbeez made him laugh too i

have to tell you they love their

pictures

katie looked at them for a minute and

turned to orbeez she said that

maybe they could play with adult friends

and now she knew how so did orbeez

with a spin and the jump they were off

mum was a little bit puzzled a little

later katie and orbee hurried down the

stairs with the big envelope and

shot out the door

they giggled all the way to vincent and

adele's pathway

then quietly they placed their envelope

outside the door

katie rang the doorbell and they raced

and hid behind

a bush at the front of vincent's house

when vincent opened the door he saw the

big envelope

he heard some giggling too but he

pretended that he didn't

he opened up the envelope with two

pictures in it

took a good look at them

[Laughter]

he called adele and she came to the door

and vincent held out a funny picture of

her

she laughed too and said it was just

wonderful

the giggling from the bush was getting

louder vincent told adele he was

delighted they'd bought a house with a

giggling bush

katie and orbee jumped up and said boo

and

everybody laughed

adele brought out a container of juice

and some paper cups

on the front steps of vincent's new

house they enjoyed a drink of juice

vincent told katie and orbee he and

adele were going to love

being their friends orbee tooted and

katie said that they were going to love

being their new friends too

as a matter of fact they loved it

already

and i hope you remember that you never

know who will turn out to be your next

friend

you just have to find a way to make it

happen and i know you're already very

good at that

just look at all of the friends you've

made so far

did you know goats are fascinating

animals

some kinds of goats live on farms and

others

live high up in the mountains some have

short fur

and others have great thick coats

there's even a kind of ghost who faints

whenever it gets scared

what a silly billy

[Music]

it had been a day of finding places

katie discovered that even though you

might want to float your boats in the

big sink

other people need the sink to wash their

hands

orbee found out that the hall is a great

place to line up all your cars

until granny almost slips on one and

they learn that playing with toys takes

up a lot of space

katie and her family were staying at her

grandparents apartment in the big city

it was always fun because they went to

see different things in the city

but today they were going nowhere

it was a rest day and all of the

grown-ups

were reading or snoozing katie and orbee

were asked to play quietly and they were

always

very good at that as you know and so

they did their very best

after lunch katie and orbee decided to

have giant marble races down the long

wooden hall

they both shot their models and orbeez

was ahead and just then

mom came around the corner and asked

them to find something else to do

mom was afraid granny might slip on them

when you're old falling was a bad thing

because your bones were old too

and they could break easily katie and

orbee smiled at mom and picked up the

marbles

they headed into their bedroom

orbee thought a game of hide and seek

would be fun in the big old apartment

quietly he tiptoed down the long hall

into the living room he found a hiding

place

under the beautiful antique couch

granny's throw blanket was hanging over

the side and he was sure

that katie would never find him

katie called out that she was coming

ready or not

[Music]

as she tiptoed down the hall she looked

for orbee

she had a feeling he was in the living

room and sneaked in through the big door

orbee could hear a little giggle and

knew katie was on her way

what orbee didn't know was that the

light from the big window behind the

couch

was shining through the blanket

katie could see orbeez shape right

through it

she tried so hard not to giggle but as

you can imagine

one occasionally slipped out

she tiptoed over to the couch and with a

swish she pulled away the blanket and

orbee was so surprised

he tweeted a shrill loud orbee surprise

noise and

katie was so surprised by the noise she

shrieked they both

raced for home base as they raced down

the slippery

polished wood hall orbee did some fancy

sliding to try and pass katie

and they were almost at the bedroom door

when dad came out of his room

and caught them in his open arms

granddad who had been having a nap

popped his head out of his room to see

what the problem was

mom came from the kitchen telling the

two fans that they'd given

granny a terrible fright now

i have to tell you that that neither

katie nor orbee as you can imagine

wanted to scare anybody all they wanted

to do was play

they looked at each other feeling bad

and they hurried to granddad

and gave him a two at once kiss to

apologize

they went into the kitchen and did the

same thing with granny

both granny and granddad told him that

there was really no harm done

but that didn't really help the friends

kids were noisy and

they just couldn't think of what they

could do that would be quiet enough

during

a resting kind of day

dad pulled out some of his old books as

a boy he had enjoyed them

maybe katie and orbee would too katie

and orbee sat up on the antique couch in

the living room

and nestled down with the books after

quite a long time orbee felt the need to

move around

he jumped up and and he did a a very

silly backflip that

turned into a roll on the couch and onto

the floor

mom who was walking down the hall

reminded aubry that the living room was

for sitting

orbee knew she was right and he picked

up his book again

a little later katie was reading about

dancing she got off the couch and

waltzed around the room pretending to

dance with the prince

orbee decided she needed a real prince

so he volunteered

they were very quiet except for a toot

and a giggle that came out

then orbee spun katie so hard that she

bumped into an old chair that

bumped into a lamp the lamp cheated and

katie looked up and gasped and orbee had

catapulted up onto the back of the chair

and grabbed a lamp katie was so

happy she clapped her hands

mom and dad who were coming into the

living room weren't happy at all to

see katie hopping up and down in the old

precious chair

and orbeez sitting on the back of it as

the two friends explained

mom and dad looked at each other mom

asked them to

sit quietly a little longer while they

talk to granny and granddad

katie and orbee looked out the window

not once

had they meant to be bad or

disrespectful

or be tooted that there was just no

place for them to play not even a

backyard

when mom and dad came in with their

jackets on

they found the two friends looking out

the window at the big city harbor

katie turned with a little sad face and

told her parents that

there was no place to play in the big

city mom and dad helped katie and orbeez

with their jackets

they walked for about five minutes when

orbee tooted that you sure did a lot of

walking in the big city

then he noticed katie's face katie's jaw

dropped and she squealed with the light

orbee looked in the same direction and

burbled a happy sound

their right smack dab in the middle of

the city

was a huge playground it had

jungle gyms and swings and a pirate ship

and a merry-go-round and a

huge slide with three different kinds of

tracks

katie and orbee couldn't believe it

mom and dad apologized to katie and

orbee and told them

that they really did not know that kids

just have to play

katie and orbee had been very patient

and had worked so hard at being quiet

now they could let it rip

[Music]

and let it rip they did

all that was left of warby was a a pink

swirl and

katie giggled as he zipped from one play

structure to another

katie and orbee had thought the big city

had no special play places

that day they found out how wrong they

were

[Music]

and i hope if you ever visit the big

city

that you'll remember katie and orbee and

how they found the perfect place for

them

it will be perfect for you too i just

know it

did you know everybody needs

bones some are really big like the bones

in your legs

others are really small like all the

itty-bitty bones in your hands

but the tiniest bone in your whole body

is the stirrup bone it's way inside your

ear

and looks just like this

[Music]

it had been a morning full of giggles

katie discovered that if you button your

sweater up the wrong way

it really looks silly

and orbee found out that when you talk

through an empty paper towel tube

you can make some really funny noises

[Music]

and they both learned that if you're

trying to undo a knot and skipping rope

it doesn't help to pull both ends

[Music]

therese was visiting katie and orbee for

the day everybody in the neighborhood

wanted to play with them

yi ping suggested they have a puppet

show andy wanted to play house

brynn and phoebe wanted to play in the

park and well as you can imagine

it was really hard to come to a decision

then mom suggested that perhaps each

friend should take turns at choosing a

game

it took a minute for them all to

understand but then they cheered for mum

that was the

best idea yet well

first they played follow the leader with

phoebe

they went all through the back garden

and around to the front and then

then they played house with everybody

and dress-ups

andy told them they were having a big

family party

and everyone had a good time playing

house together

soon yeeping dumped enough puppets from

her puppet bag onto the grass for

everybody to have one

put on a puppet show from behind the

flower garden

their moms clapped wildly it was really

very good

then they picked up the ba*ls and

bubbles and sand toys

and headed for the park at the park they

made

sand cities in the huge sand pile

then they blew bubbles from the

roundabout

next orbee threw his ball up in the air

and told everybody

it was time for soccer everybody cheered

and

took off everybody but charisse and

katie

out in the park orbee was whooping and

hollering

he was busy choosing teams until he

realized something

he realized his best friend and charisse

were not there

it was at that very moment that orbee

understood an

awful thing sharice couldn't run

she couldn't play soccer with him orbee

told his friends

that they couldn't play soccer because

charisse would be left out

no one wanted to leave cherise out so

even though they were a bit disappointed

they came back

now i have to tell you that nobody

wanted to play soccer

more than cherise she wondered if all

the soccer had to be running

everybody nodded that it really did

then charissa's mom smiled there's more

than one way to play soccer she told

them

she asked them if they knew that there

were olympic wheelchairs that played

sports like soccer

the friends looked at charisse's

wheelchair and i have to tell you

no one could imagine how then andy and

orbee looked at each other

there were two people in the soccer game

who wouldn't have to run at all

well they had to move about and stop the

ball but

as the others stood there astonished

orbee and andy grabbed a hold of shuri's

wheelchair and raced her over to the

basketball court

laughter tinkled out over the field with

shrugging and head scratching the rest

of the friends followed

charissa's mum nodded at katie's mom and

they went over to help out

at the basketball court orbee and andy

were waving their arms and explaining

things to cherise

she was laughing and nodding her head as

she understood what they were saying

it was her very first game of soccer and

i have to tell you

she she was very excited

the others set up some sand toys as goal

posts

charisse rolled herself into position

orbee called and told everybody to get

into position

charisse was playing goalie now some of

them wondered

how charisse would kick the ball they

wanted to be careful

and not play too hard because of cherise

but they were in for a terrific surprise

at first it's true cherise did miss a

couple of ba*ls as they came through

nobody minded because it was just a fun

game but both moms shouted out

directions and encouraged her pretty

soon

she was keeping that ball right out of

the net

charisse figured out how to hit the ball

with the corner of her toe and send it

off in another direction

she laughed with the light when she did

it

the first time all the friends were so

impressed with her they jumped up and

cheered so much

that nobody remembered to chase the ball

soon they realized charisse was a good

goalie they had to play hard to get a

ball in the net

laughing and tumbling and running in

circles kept

everybody on their toes and at the end

of the game when no one could run

another inch

mom suggested some healthy snacks the

friends were starving so they hurried

along the sidewalk back to katie's house

at home on the back steps everybody had

lots of juicicles and crunchy celery

sticks

charisse was so thrilled that she got to

play soccer with her friends

she couldn't stop talking about the game

[Music]

everybody laughed it truly had been fun

for all of them

when orbee and andy brought some jusical

sticks into the kitchen

charissa's mom thanked them for being so

thoughtful

she was impressed that they had thought

of the perfect thing for charisse to do

andy smiled he felt great

then orbee raised his hand and toothed

to cherise his mom

charisse was the best goalie they had

ever had

in a wheelchair or out mom leaned over

and told orbee

he and andy must make sure to tell that

to cherise

in a blur they were gone

[Music]

outside the boys told charisse that very

thing

at first she left because she thought

they were being funny

but orbee touched her shoulder he told

her he

really really meant it anytime she

wanted to play soccer with them

both teams would want her to be their

goalie

that was when charisse knew it was true

and i don't think she ever smiled bigger

or brighter than she did at that moment

and i have to tell you there were many

more soccer games and over time

charisse got better and better and she

even showed some of her friends in

wheelchairs

how they could play soccer with their

friends too

[Music]

and i really hope if you know someone

who is special

you and your friends will find a great

way to include them in your game

i know they'll appreciate it after all

every child loves to have fun and play

just like you do right
