05x09 - Star / Later / Rainy Day Zombies

it had been a day of collecting things

katie found out that if you hold a red

yellow and orange leaf together in your

hand

it makes a bright colored fan

orbee learned that a windy day was

especially good for picking up pine

cones

to make decorations and they both

discovered that

you have to be fast collecting acorn

hats because

squirrels are the fastest collectors of

all

dad had to do some work and when he was

finished they were going to go down to

max garage to

pump up the tires on the car katie and

orbee were very excited about this

they played quietly while dad wrote

things down and

looked things up first they were wild

animal photographers

then they played dress-up a little later

they pretended to

dig holes right through the earth

they talked about what they wanted to do

when they grew up and

they were very busy not bothering dad

so he could get his work done but i have

to tell you that by the time they've

done

all of that they certainly were ready to

go down to the garage and

watch dad and mac blow up the tires

when they asked dad if he was nearly

finished he nodded his head

he told them he would only be a few more

minutes

and this was music to their ears

katie and orbee quickly threw on their

jackets and stood by the door

but dad kept working

after a couple of minutes katie slipped

into the room and asked dad if

he was ready yet he nodded his head

without looking up and

told her again it would be a few more

minutes

katie smiled and went back to the front

door to tell orbee

orbee was a bit tired of standing by the

door and wanted to encourage dad to

hurry so he slid on his tummy

like a snake into the room and onto

dad's table

[Laughter]

dad chuckled and asked him to keep the

snake out of the dining room

it might mix up his papers the

orbeez snake slid out as dad called out

that

it would only be a few more minutes

katie got so hot sitting in the front

hall with her jacket on that she finally

took it off

then she whispered in orbee's ear

she had a great plan they tiptoed up the

stairs and got her fishing rod

and some paper and crayons

they drew a picture of a big tire

[Music]

back in the dining room something

floated over dad's head

and in front of his face

that laughed at the funny tire picture

and he told him that he was

almost done just a few more minutes

he waved away the picture so he could

see what he was doing

in the front hall katie and orbeez sat

patiently

a few more minutes sure could take a

long long time

at the dining room table dad worked away

and didn't seem to notice the two

friends waiting at the door

orbee was fiddling with dad's keychain

it made a jingling sound

and orbee sat up and looked like he'd

thought of the very

most amazing thing katie asked what it

was

orbee burbled maybe if a parade walked

through the dining room

that would be sure to follow

he shot up the stairs when orbee was

dressed up in a silly hat with his

marching drum around his neck and

katie was in her clown suit with her

trumpet

they looked at each other something

wasn't quite right

a parade usually had more than two

people in

orbee looked over at katie stuffies and

they both giggled

[Music]

in a minute they had a teddy behind

orbee

and a big doll behind katie they held

them on with belts

in a line they looked like four people a

real parade

the parade trumpeted and drummed itself

down the stairs

right into the dining room it went all

around the table twice and dad smiled

but he didn't really look up

i have to tell you that katie and orbee

were now

a little annoyed that dad wasn't

noticing them

but i have to add that dad was trying

really very hard

to finish his work when katie and orbee

watched out of the room

they were not very happy how could dad

not notice a parade

they sat on the kitchen chairs and tried

to figure out

how to get his attention after all more

than a

few minutes were already up for sure

orbee looked around the room and saw

mom's great big soup pot sitting in the

drying rack

what if he burbled katie sang a silly

song about going to get the tire changed

and he played the soup pot like a drum

the song would remind dad and the pot

would be much louder than his little

drum orbee figured this amazing idea

would work

so he and katie made up a silly song

when she had memorized all the words

that could sing it without giggling

orbee picked up an old soup ladle and

the pot

and together they tiptoed into the

dining room

i don't think dad even heard them if he

did he didn't look up

he was just on the very last number when

orbee

struck the pot then the noise was so

loud

surprised dad so much that the pencil he

was riding with

flipped into the air and across the room

katie sang her song and

orbee kept the beat and they had smiled

and told them

he was all ready and would meet them in

the hall in two minutes

he just had to put his books away

orbeez zipped out of the room so fast

the pencils spun

on the floor katie tried to catch up

with him

when dad popped his head into the living

room to see if they were sitting on the

couch

katie and orbee jumped up from behind

the couch and said and tooted

their head laughed again

at max garage dad told the story of how

katie and orbee

had tried to get his attention mack

pumped the air into the tire as the air

machine dinged

mack looked at that he said he thought

katie and orbee

must have had more fun in those last few

more minutes

than they'd had all day

the friends looked at each other mack

was right

katie and orbee had had a ball waiting

for dad

mack told him next time he'd have to

take a little longer

katy and orbee groaned and then giggled

and i hope if you have to wait for

someone that you'll remember katie and

ori

and that waiting can be as much fun as

what you are waiting for

did you know there's some pretty funny

looking things underwater

a sponge is really a sea creature a

jellyfish is a see-through fish with

tons of legs

and a sea cucumber doesn't taste like a

real one

this is a seahorse imagine that a horse

with no legs

[Music]

it had been a day of raindrops

katie found that if you leave your pail

out in the rain

it will fill up with water orbee learned

rain makes tiny rivers which flow into

big puddles and

rain and they both discovered that

raindrops on the roof

make you feel a lot like taking a nap

it had been raining for three days at

first katie and orbee played outside

where they built streams and sailed

boats and splashed in puddles until they

were soaked

soon they felt that they'd played every

outside rainy day game that they could

think of

inside they made puzzles painted blue

red

raced dressed up built castles in

well they felt like they'd done

everything that there was to do inside

on a rainy day

on the afternoon of the third rainy day

they asked mom if they could watch a

video

mom didn't usually allow them to watch

videos in the daytime

but i think even she was tired of the

rain so

she agreed the two friends chose a video

about some old dinosaurs and watched it

with interest

it seemed like it was over in no time at

all

katie got up and wiggled a bit orbee got

up

and checked the weather as you can

imagine

it was still raining my mom was busy

upstairs so

aubry popped in another video this time

it was the story about a little duck

when mom came down she heard the video

playing and thought that they were still

watching the first video

the one on dinosaurs she was going to

make a lot of spaghetti sauce and pulled

all kinds of vegetables out of the

fridge when the video ended

they were disappointed because it was

over so soon

katie got up and stretched her legs then

they decided to watch another one when

mom heard the show begin she called out

for the two friends to please find

something else to do

usually they would have listened to her

but her voice calling to them was

like a far away sound orbee was staring

at what

the funny man did katie was laughing at

the little girl in the story

it was great fun katie's body was really

getting tired of sitting

she started to wiggle without taking his

eyes off the screen

orbee put his legs up against the back

of his chair and

hung his head over the edge watching the

video upside down

mom looked up from chopping onions and

called again for the two friends to

please go and find something else to do

with their time they'd watch videos long

enough

katie and orbee didn't move i have to

explain no one was being

bad or ignoring mom it was just that

they were very focused on the screen and

didn't notice her calling mom added lots

of canned tomatoes to the big pot and

stirred it

again she called to them to please find

something else to do

nobody answered her in the living room

katie and orbee just stared and stared

and stared at the screen orbee had

stopped blinking

all together mom washed her hands

and headed into the living room the two

friends were still staring at the screen

she asked them to turn off the video

very soon

katie said yes mom in a dull flat voice

orbee made a tiny little sound that

wasn't very loud at all

mom was delighted they understood and

she left the room

with the spaghetti sauce simmering on

the stove she curled up with her book on

the couch in the sun room

she read for a while but the gentle

drumming of the rain

made her very sleepy when the stove

timer rang out

she woke with a start mom hurried into

the kitchen she checked the sauce

then stepped into the living room the

two

very quiet friends sat staring

at the noisy screen mom turned the tv

off with a loud pop sound

katie and orbeez sat still for a moment

and then suddenly

katie jumped back to life again but

orbee

still didn't move his eyes were wide

open

but not blinking at all they had watched

four hours of videos the afternoon was

over now and it was supper time

one video had run into another and they

wanted to see

what each was about

just then mom had to step back into the

kitchen to answer the phone

katie expected orbee to flip right up

but instead he just slid

down onto the floor like a a wet

spaghetti noodle

he lay on his back with his eyes wide

open

katie knelt down and said he should get

up now

well orbee sat up but he didn't burble

or toot or hawk

he was still staring straight at the

screen

his eyes were not blinking and now his

arms were stuck out in front of him like

well like a zombie

katie went to get mom to help at that

minute orbee stood up

and started to walk like a zombie

he banged into the couch and the wall

spun around but never blinked once when

katie and mum came in

he was gone

they looked behind the plants and all

around but there was no orbee

and they were just checking under the

couch when they heard

a door open orbee the zombie was heading

outside

they hopped up but he was already on the

front porch

he banged into the pillar and spun

around but

still did not blink

suddenly the rain came down hard and he

got soaked in the cold shower

and a good thing too because that

woke him up he shook his head

tooted mom and katie were very relieved

as they dried off orbee mom said some

videos were certainly good for you as

there were a lot of things to learn from

them

but too much of a good thing could

become a bad thing

after all growing children need to move

and play

and be part of life not just watch it

katie and orbee looked at each other mom

was right

at that moment katie thought of two

pictures that she hadn't painted yet

orbee decided to make parachute people

and

drop them over the stairs

that night at the supper table katie and

orbee talked about some of the things

that they'd learned from their videos

mom and dad were very impressed they

also really like katie's artwork

and mom even threw three paratroopers

over the banister to give them a try

from that time on whenever katie and

orbee watched videos

they always made sure they played a

whole lot of other things too

sometimes they they even played zombies

and i know that when you watch videos

remember that after a while your body

needs to

get up and do something else just like

katie

and orbee
