05x12 - Orbie and the Bullfrog / Two Brothers / The Loon

[Music]

it was a day of looking at nature

katie found out that some flowers bloom

in the springtime

then sleep until next year orbee learned

that when you plant a brand new flower

you have to be very gentle

and they both discovered that you can

tell when summer is getting closer

because

the sun makes you feel like taking your

sweater off

one of katie and orbee's favorite things

to do in the summer was to go down to

the pond and feed the ducks

when they finished helping mom in the

garden she suggested that

they should all go and see if the ducks

were hungry

she made up a special bag full of all

kinds of good things for ducks to eat

katie and orbee were very happy to be

helping the ducks

in rubber boots and with food bags that

three of them set off

[Music]

things were quiet at the pond as they

walked down the path

katie was afraid that the ducks weren't

there

but when they came around the corner of

the winding path

the pawn was full of them

and when the ducks saw their two old

friends they swam to the edge of the

pond three

even quacked katie and orbee waved and

giggled

mom sat on her favorite bench and helped

katie open up the bag katie was

so excited and kept looking back over

her shoulder to make sure that the

ducks didn't swim away

but they knew their friends were

bringing treats and they waited

orbee burbled lunch would only be a

minute

mom gave katie the bag

when katie ran over with the bag the

ducks swam away

then they turned and watched as she and

orbee threw hands full of duck treats

out onto the pond as soon as the ducks

saw the food landing on the pond surface

they swam over and plucked it up

some raced for the same piece and were

surprised when their friend

got to it before they did soon a couple

of pigeons gathered at orbeez feet

they nibbled at the crumbs that were

falling out of his hands as he threw his

duck treats

[Music]

then a few more pigeons seemed to figure

out that there was a good food falling

and they came over and a few more and

a few more and so there was no room on

the ground

katie giggled beside orbee as they got

ready to throw another handful of duck

treats out

over the pond a flurry of pigeons landed

on his

arm and his head and soon he was a pink

pile of pigeons

mom and katie giggled as they helped

orbee send the birds on their way

it was about that moment that orbee

heard an interesting sound

[Music]

it wasn't the sound made by the pigeons

and it wasn't a sound made by the ducks

orbeez looked around it sounded like it

was made by a huge

big fat thing maybe a hippopotamus

mom told orbee the creature was smaller

than that it certainly wasn't a hippo

they only lived in really hot countries

orbee asked

was it a great big hog mom

chuckled she shook her head maybe he

burbled

[Music]

it was a huge flying

rhino forest mom and katie looked at

orbee

he shrugged his shoulders he made that

up and he laughed

kitty and orbee looked in the bushes and

across the lake

where was that big fat sound coming from

mom giggled and told him that they were

looking up when they should be looking

down

the sound which was low and heavy like a

a big

b*mb didn't sound like it was coming

from something

small on the ground katie and orbee

looked around but still couldn't find

where it was coming from

i have to say they were

puzzled mom came over and told them

that it was fine to look and walk in the

shallow water at the pond's edge

their rubber boots would keep their feet

dry

now both katie and orbee were confused

the things that lived in water were fish

did fish make big huge sounds

well i have to tell you that it wasn't a

fish

as orbee bed over and inspected the

water

two eyes bulged up at him then the

bug-eyed creature made

a huge balloon happen under his chin

and the sound came out orbee could see

through the water that it was a frog

he called katie over mom told him he

needed to be quiet or he'd scare the

frog

but the funny creature just looked at

orbee with great interest

then hopped up on a lily pad

he didn't even notice katie

mom told orbee that frogs eat bugs and

perhaps orbee looked like the biggest

tastiest pink bug in the world

or be chuckled the frog made a big

balloon again

and out came the sound it echoed

all around the pond

orbee loved it he made a big balloon too

at the end of his nose and made the

strange low sound

back to the frog and i have to tell you

no one was more surprised than the frog

he leapt off his lily pad and

dived into the water then he popped his

head right up and looked at orbee again

orbee made another sound and the frog

hopped back up on the lily pad i think

he was getting to like orbee

the frog made another sound it was a

little different than the first and

orbee copied him and with the frog

sitting on the lily pad orbee standing

in the shallow water

they sang a froggy song

katie and mom giggled

then katie noticed an interesting thing

orbee and the frog were not alone when

they made a sound

another frog across the pond joined in

then another and another mom sat at the

edge of the pond and enjoyed the

serenade

katie pretended to conduct the home

[Music]

they had a lot of fun and when it was

time to go

katie and orbee said and croaked good

night to the frog and the ducks

nobody answered but as they went up the

path they heard a

great big croak that resounded over the

pond

katie was pretty sure the frog was

saying goodnight to them

and i think that she was right and i

hope that if you

are ever at a pond that you'll get to

play with bullfrogs

just like katie and orbee did i know

that

the frogs would love to play with you

[Music]

did you know trees don't have mouths

but they drink water all the time

the root is the part that grows down

into the ground

it holds the tree in the soil and finds

the water it needs

i bet you'll find it tastes better from

the tap

[Music]

it had been a day of

outdoor things katie discovered that

when you wake up in early spring

the birds are very noisy

orbee learned that some trees have

leaves while others are still growing

bubs

and they both found out that you feel

lighter in spring

because you don't have to wear winter

clothes anymore

katie and orbee hadn't been able to go

to the park for the last few days

because

the melting snow had left huge puddles

everywhere

but this morning mom suggested that they

walk to the park and check it out

as they walked along mom asked each of

them to hunt for things that

told them spring had arrived katy heard

the first

and pointed to a tree a bird

was busily building a net

orbee found the next right along the

sidewalk some little sprouts of green

grass were showing

katie pointed to the tiny buds on the

tree branches

that meant new leaves would be coming

soon

hooray at the park

they were glad to see that all puddles

were gone even better than that

katie noticed two other kids on the play

equipment

they raced ahead and as they got closer

katie could tell that

they were new to the neighborhood she

introduced orbee and herself

the boys said their names were peter and

gregory they were brothers

peter had dark hair and was very tall

gregory had red hair

and was sort of short they looked

very different from each other

orbee did a flip to get the fun started

[Music]

peter leapt up and grabbed a monkey bar

[Music]

gregory pulled himself up in the

fireman's pool

katie shrieked with joy and grabbed the

trapeze bar there was nothing like

brand new friends

and it wasn't long before they were

playing astronauts and sh**ting rockets

to the moon

then they were airplanes as they whirled

around the playground

something occurred to orbee peter and

gregory

didn't look very much alike for brothers

mom was talking to the boy's mother

sarah and katie noticed that they seemed

to be having a nice time

well they played for a few hours as the

mums watched and chatted

then mom invited everybody home for a

snack when sarah agreed a certain amount

of

cheering and tooting went on

[Music]

at home the mom set about making some

cheese flying sauces on english muffins

upstairs katie orbee and their brand new

friends played

goldfish and every time arby had to go

fish

he made a fish face with gurgling noises

giggles streamed out of the room

as they were playing katie told them

that she was five

the boy said that they were both exactly

five

too katie asked if the boys were twins

the kind who didn't look exactly alike

the boys shook their heads and smiled

they said

they were step brothers just then mom

called

it was time for cheese flying saucers

the two boys who had never had them

before raced out of the room with katie

and orbee right behind

they all sat down at the kitchen table

and i have to say

katie and orbee were still a little

puzzled

they had no idea what being step

brothers actually meant

but just then the flying saucers arrived

they had olive slices around the side

like

little windows and tomato rings on the

top and

the cheese drizzled down and looked so

delicious

orbee lifted his off the plate with a

great flying saucer noise

he flew it around slowly then he hovered

it

right in front of his mouth and with a

zip

he popped it in

there were loads of thank yous and yums

and

this is delicious going around

well katie couldn't wait any longer to

find out what exactly a stepbrother was

so

she asked her mom and her mom explained

that

it meant that peter and gregory were

from two different families

who have come together through marriage

well i have to say

katie and orbee still didn't understand

sarah explained that she

and gregory's dad used to be married but

they had a divorce

a divorce meant that they were not

married anymore

katie and orbee looked at peter and

gregory they were eating their flying

saucers happily

then sarah explained that peter's mom

and dad

were also not married to each other

anymore

after some time passed gregory's mom and

peter's dad met

and they fell very much in love when

they knew the time was right they

decided to get married

that meant gregory and peter became part

of the same new family

that's what it meant to be step brothers

[Music]

orbee thought that was a great idea and

tooted

hooray and later when there were

floating paper boats in the backyard

puddles

katie asked peter if he missed his mom

he gave her a great big smile and said

he saw his mom

all the time gregory did the very same

thing with his dad

peter pushed his boat across the problem

[Music]

and when he sat up he had a great big

dollop of mud on the end of his nose

which he blew off all the friends

laughed including orbee

he spun himself so quickly that the mud

flew all over

everybody shrieked and ducked out of the

way

and then peter told katie something

important he held out his hands to show

how big a heart is and explained even

though your heart was small

there was tons of room in it for new

people to love

you could never fill it up

katie smiled gregory was giving orbee a

piggy bank ride around the puddle and

orbee was

pretending to be a cowboy katie looked

at orbee and realized

that it was true when katie had first

met orbee

her heart had lots of love in it for her

family

but then her heart had made room for

orbee too

she smiled at peter and asked if he

wanted to see a bird's nest

he grinned in the flesh they were off

with a

gregory horse and the pink cowboy

following close behind

and i hope that if you meet some step

brothers or stepsisters

or have them yourself you'll remember

what peter said

even though your heart is small there's

tons of room in it for new people to

love

[Music]

did you know there's a fish called a dab

it's a really flat fish that lives on

the bottom of the sea

it has skin that changes to match

wherever the fish is swimming

whether it's green grass or a big gray

rock

wouldn't it be neat to see a fish that

looked just like a rock

or the grass or even a checkerboard

it had been a day of driving

katie found out that if you count them

there are a lot of blue cars on the

highway

orbee learned that drawing in the car

makes a lot of jiggly lines

and they both discovered that if you

sing

the time seems to go faster

it wasn't long before katie and her

family arrived at the campground

mom got out of the car kicked off her

shoes and hurried over to the water

she called to the others to come and dip

their toes in the

gorgeous lake before they unpacked katie

took her shoes off and so did dad and

they all splashed a silly little

where finally here water dance kicking

the water high up in the air

as they stood laughing in the lake orby

felt something wiggly touching his toes

he twibbled and shot right out of the

water a little sunfish in the water

below

was even more startled than orbee orbeez

zipped up to the car before dad could

call his name and dad ran to him and

explained that a little sunfish had

mistaken his pink toes

for delicious worms the fish didn't mean

to hurt him

or be crept back and looked in the water

cute little fish swam all around orbee

smiled and dipped his hand in

one especially brave fish swam over and

checked out his pink fingers

it nudged orbee's hand with his nose and

then swam away

katie and orbee giggled at it orbee

wasn't scared anymore

he knew the fish had decided that orbee

fingers

didn't taste nearly as good as worms

[Music]

after they set up the tent and eaten a

delicious lunch dad told them it was

time to go searching for wild things

everybody put on their life jackets dad

held the canoe steady while mum

got in at the front dad pushed it into

the water a little further and katie and

orbee climbed into the middle and sat

down

canoes could be very wobbly if you don't

sit down

dad stepped into the water and pushed

the canoe off the shore

they were floating out into the lake the

canoe wobbled as dad stepped in but it

settled down

as they started to paddle dad told the

two friends that a canoe was so solid

that they could paddle close to nature

and not disturb it

he said katie and orbee had special jobs

in the canoe

to be the nature hunters when they saw

something

they were to whisper for the others to

see it too

orbee was trying really hard to see

something special

he strained and squinted and made

binoculars with his hand

katie wanted to laugh but she managed

not to

all at once orbee noticed a group of

rocks sticking out of the water

on the rock was a large fat bird with a

weird neck

katie whispered that it looked like a

great big

blue heron she saw once but dad said

this bird was actually called

a turkey vulture behind the vulture

something moved in the woods it was a

little red fox

he stood and looked at the canoe as they

floated by

the friends thought he looked beautiful

as they paddled along katie spotted what

looked like

a field of lily pairs with beautiful

yellow flowers

dad said it was a floating feel she

wanted to pick some of the flowers but

mom explained that

it took the lily a long time to grow a

flower it was best to leave them where

they were

all kinds of insects and creatures

needed the flowers to live on

further down the lake orbee noticed some

bushes moving and he whispered a little

orbee sound

and the paddlers stopped battling

everyone waited to see what it might be

then something brown flashed through the

trees

disappeared and then stepped right out

into the clearing

it was a deer the deer cautiously

approached the water

and took a sip everybody in the canoe

was delighted they stayed as quiet as

they could

and they watched until the deer took a

big

graceful jump and bounded back into the

woods

the nature hunters and their helpful

paddlers headed back to camp

where they had a wonderful rest of the

day

[Music]

they cooked their lunch over the

campfire and roasted marshmallows

as they snuggled down in their sleeping

bags katie wondered

if some of nature's wild things weren't

watching them

dad imagined some were and he was sure

they'd appreciate how respectful

katie and orbee were of their hidden

places

the two nature hunting friends were soon

asleep

later that night after even mom and dad

were sound asleep

something quite eerie woke katie

it sounded like someone was crying or

calling

katie sat right up she wanted to go

right outside and help but she knew

a child never left a tent at night

without a parent

so katie tapped dad's shoulder

the eerie sound came again at that very

moment

and katie whispered to dad that one of

nature's animals was in trouble

when dad heard the noise he knew what it

was

he took katie's hand and ever so quietly

led her outside the tent it was very

dark

but a great big moon hung like a silver

spotlight in the sky

dad looked for a moment and then saw

what was making the sound

he walked katie right to the shore and

pointed out along the moonlight's path

there in the silver light floating on

the lake

was a loon the loon threw his head back

and made the noise again

and katie smiled she felt better that it

was only a loon

but as she looked she told dad that she

thought the loon sounded lonely

it must be crying in the night because

it was all by itself

dad put his arm around katie and told

her that he was pretty sure

she was in for a surprise he told her to

watch a little longer the loon called

out again

and then from somewhere else

came an answer katie was amazed to see

another loon swim into the moonlight

path

the loon wasn't lonely at all dad

explained that he was calling for his

mate

and that made katie very happy

[Music]

his dad and katie settled down in their

sleeping bags again

katie listened to the loons as they

talked together their voices were like

music and she felt as if they were

singing her

a lullaby soon she was fast asleep

the next day the nature hunters paddled

right up to the family of loons in the

lake

and they were amazed at how far and how

fast they could swim underwater

without coming up that night orbeez

stayed up to hear the loons lullaby in

the moonlight

katie and orbee tried calling back to

them

and katie was sure that she heard them

answering

and i'm pretty sure if you had been

sitting on the moonlit beach with the

friends

you'd have heard them answer too
