- [Narrator] Every

town has a dark secret,

a time when the stars align

and things go so horribly wrong

that a legend is born.

These dense forests

were once home

to prohibition

moonshiners and outlaws.

Law took some, and in 1931,

a still expl*si*n

started a forest fire

that drove the rest away,

all except for one family.

Solitude and incest

drove them mad.

Their names, once uttered

only through hushed voices,

were eventually forgotten.

One day, the family bore a child

so large and misshapen

that the birth tore

its mother in half.

(mother faintly wailing)

To his father, the child

was an abomination,

and in his grief, threw the

baby into the woods to die.

It was then,

according to folklore,

that a witch took

the baby for her own.

Her womb ancient and barren,

the child suckled poison from

her teat and grew strong.

(figure grunting)

Now, he guards these woods,

a shadow known to

locals as Boneface.

(eerie music)

(animals distantly chittering)

(liquid squelches)

Of those who step foot in

these woods, few return.

(tense music)

(hiker screams)

(flesh squelches)

(Boneface grunts)

(ominous music)

For those poor souls,

the legacy of these woods

is written in blood.

(eerie music)

(Boneface panting)

- Oh!

(hunter gasps)

(hunter screams)

(flesh squelches)

(hunter groaning)

(g*nsh*t bangs)

(owl hooting)

- [Unlucky Girl] Come on!

- Where are we going?

- [Unlucky Girl] My lucky tree.

(ominous music)

- So, what makes it so lucky?

- Let's find out.

(tense music)

(unlucky girl screams)

(flesh squelches)

(Boneface panting)

(eerie music)

- [Hiker] Chad!

Where are you?

Whatever. I guess I'm just

out here all by myself.

(branch cracks)

Chad?

(foreboding music)

(Boneface panting)

(girlfriend screams)

- [Nicky] Jesus Christ, Zach.

Is this story going anywhere?

(car rumbles)

- Actually, yeah, Nicky.

It was, if you had

a little patience.

- Yeah, man. Have

a little patience.

- Next time, I'm

picking the group trip.

I don't know how I let

you all convince me

that some old house in the

woods would be relaxing,

and Zach, you're not helping.

- Well, I'm helping

color your experience.

- This the kind of sh*t you

talk about on your podcast?

- Okay. People love

hearing about m*rder.

- How many people listen

to your show exactly?

- Yeah. What kind of audience

are we talking about here?

- Isn't my girlfriend

supposed to be on my side?

- Well, if I'm going to be

a documentary filmmaker,

I need to be objective.

- Give me a break.

- I think it's cool.

- Valarie thinks anything

where people is die.

- That's because dying is cool.

- See, dying is cool.

Death is the ultimate shared

human experience, right?

The great cosmic inevitability,

and if we try to

resist inevitability,

then we could all end up going

crazy and k*lling each other.

Thank you.

- We don't want

that, now, would we?

- It's a natural curiosity

is all I'm saying, okay?

One day, sooner or later,

we all gotta ride the hansom,

and if we invited

Greg, like I suggested,

he would back me up right now.

- We didn't invite

him for a reason.

- Greg? Who's Greg?

- His podcast cohost,

and he makes Zach here

look like the poster

child for normality.

- Oh, please. Okay, Greg

is an actual genius.

- [Jude] Yeah, sure.

- All right, can anybody else

say that about themselves?

- The man can barely function.

He's something, all right.

I don't think genius is it.

- People can be more

than one thing, you know.

- Oh, you mean like an

idiot and a bullshitter?

(group sardonically chuckles)

- I have a master's degree.

It's literally impossible

for me to be an idiot.

- Oh.

- Eh.

- Notice he didn't deny

being a bullshitter.

- f*ck you guys.

- [Radio] Man's best friend.

(group chuckles)

(lively rock music)

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

I surrender to

you, I give in

This world's a

playground, baby

If we just pretend

You say you love me

Will you love me to the end

Do you wanna play

Do you wanna stay

Oh, honey, my sweet honey

You know, you know I

love you from my heart

Oh, cross my heart

Oh, hope to die

Oh, hope to die

You say you love me

Will you, will

you love me like I

Love me

This world's a playground

and we just pretend

This world's a playground

Come to hell

(birds faintly chirping)

(traffic rumbling)

(van squeaks)

- One minute!

- 40 of unleaded, please.

- [Attendant] Sure thing.

- Well, here's the point where

he tells us we're all doomed.

- What?

- Where are you folks headed?

- Oh, my uncle's old

place up on the hill.

- Here it comes.

- That's good. I hope

you have a nice time.

- f*ck. Excuse me!

Hang on.

Is there anything we should

know about this mountain?

(ominous music)

- No. It's beautiful

this time of year.

- Yeah. It really is.

- No, no. I'm sorry.

I mean, anything you

should warn us about

as a group of young people

going into the

remote woods alone?

- Well, let's see.

Vern, can you think of anything

we should be warning

these young folks about?

- What?

- I said is there something

we should be warning

these fine folks about?

(ominous music)

- Rain.

- Jesus f*cking Christ.

What do you mean rain?

(Vern spits)

- It's coming.

- Y'all got an umbrella?

- Yeah, yeah, yeah.

We have an umbrella.

- Then you should be fine then.

- I think we're good.

Sorry about my friend.

He was hit in the

head with a swing set

when he was a kid, so.

- [Zach] Hey.

(Nicky chuckles)

(foreboding music)

(chain clanks)

- I think we might be

trespassing, if anyone cares.

- Oh, no, that's my

uncle's old sign.

This is the start

of his property.

- Huh. Seems like something

that'd be kind of important.

- Yeah, I mean,

the guy had cancer.

He probably had some

other stuff on his mind.

- Okay. Just saying.

- You guys didn't have

to come, you know.

I mean, Jude and I could handle

all my uncle's old

appraisal sh*t on our own.

- Damn right.

Half the reason I signed up

for this was for the seclusion,

so how about nobody f*ck

that up for me, please?

- Calm down, boys.

- Well, if we're all

on the same page,

I should probably

let you guys know

this is the last chance

to use your phones.

- What?

- Oh, whoa, whoa.

What does that mean?

- There's no signal up here.

- How the f*ck is that even

possible in this day and age?

- I mean, this whole

side of the mountain

is private property.

It's a bunch of old-timers

that never let the phone

companies build any towers.

Get your last licks,

ladies and gentlemen.

Welcome to no man's land.

- [Radio] And you can trust

me 'cause I'm the dog man,

and the dog does not lie.

Ow, ow!

Talking weather, we're keeping

an eye on this nor'easter,

still hoping this

storm blows on past us

so things can stay

bright and beautiful.

(birds chirping)

(ominous music)

(van doors creaking)

(Nicky chuckles)

- [Nicky] All right,

grab your bags.

We're walking from here.

- What do you mean

we're walking from here?

- This is a dead end.

There's no road for cars.

- f*ck, man. This just keeps

getting better and better.

Couldn't have just warned us?

- About a little walk,

bro? Come on, man.

Somebody's gotta get you

out your comfort

zone sooner or later.

Hey, look, think of

it as an adventure.

Grab the important

stuff. Let's go, Jude.

We're home!

- So, beer then?

- Yeah, definitely beer.

(solemn music)

(birds chirping)

(crickets chirping)

- [Jude] f*ck, man. There's,

like, sh*t everywhere.

Didn't your uncle ever

throw anything away?

- That's what we're

here to figure out.

Hey, man, wait a minute.

(bird cawing)

(Sarah softly chuckles)

- It's so beautiful up here.

- Now, I didn't think you

were the outdoorsy type.

- You know, I didn't either,

but I might be coming around.

- Hmm.

- You sure you wanna be up here

with me and my weird friends

instead of at your parents'

pool for the weekend?

- Hell yeah. This is better.

You know I like a little nature.

- Yeah, 'cause there's

no people in nature.

(Valarie sarcastically laughs)

Listen, I love that

you came up here,

but I hate the idea that you

did it just to make me happy

and that you would

rather be, I don't know,

somewhere else,

doing something else.

- Hey, hey, hey.

I'm glad I came.

- You sure?

- Best decision I ever made.

Come here.

(crickets chirping)

(somber music)

- Hey, Jude.

Jude.

Hey, Jude.

(ominous music)

Jude?

(suspenseful music)

(Jude shrieks)

- Man, don't f*cking point that

thing at me. What the f*ck?

- Relax, dude. This

thing's f*cking ancient.

- Your uncle's got a whole

bunch of cool sh*t in here, man.

Put it back.

You got plenty of time to

mess up everything later.

- Okay.

- Can we get in the

house first? Sure

- [Jude] Sure. Geez.

- [Valarie] I have

something for you.

- You know I don't like knives.

- This is as

harmless as they get.

They give these to Girl Scouts.

Listen, my dad

gave me this knife

on one of our camping trips,

and now I'm giving it to you.

- You're giving me a gift?

- Don't make it weird.

Yeah, it's a gift.

It's just a little

something to say, you know,

that I love you, I guess.

(gentle music)

- Thanks.

- Is that okay?

- Yeah. More than okay.

Now, even most Girl

Scouts are more prepared

than city girls like you,

so be careful with

that thing, right?

(Sarah sarcastically laughs)

- Ah, you're so funny.

- I'm so funny.

- You wait and see. I could

get into this nature thing.

- Oh, yeah, girl.

You are like lady

Bear Grylls up here,

but listen, before you say that,

let's go see what this sh*t

heap looks like on the inside.

- Yeah.

- All right, come on.

Come on.

(door creaks)

(doorknob clicks)

- Your uncle stop

locking his door too?

- It's been a while

since he died,

so maybe someone just

forgot to lock it.

- What's going on?

- Let's check the place out

before we start with

the festivities.

- Yeah, yeah. No, agreed, yeah.

- One sec.

(Nicky scoffs)

- Oh, are you serious?

What the f*ck is that?

- What the f*ck

does it look like?

Relax, okay? It's

just for protection.

- Hey, what is it with

you and weapons, man?

- I'll be careful, all right?

Let's just check the place out,

and then it goes

away, I promise.

(somber music)

Come on.

- Let's go.

Hey, don't get stupid and

sh**t me with that thing.

- I know.

- I'm serious.

- I know.

(somber music continues)

(eerie music)

Nicky, get in here!

I said shut the f*ck up!

(stranger screams)

- And I said get

that f*cking g*n

out of my face!

- You're not in the position

to be making any

f*cking demands, pal!

- Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!

What's happening here?

- These people broke into your

f*cking uncle's house, man.

That's what's happening.

- No, that's not true.

- This f*cking psychopath

bust in here and started-

- You wanna see a

psychopath, huh?

- Don't you point

that thing at her!

- Hey, hey, hey, hey!

Hey, Jude, will you

put that thing down

for one f*cking second?

Who the f*ck are you two

and what the hell are

you doing in this house?

- I don't have to

explain myself to you.

- Okay.

- Yeah, you do.

- Actually, you do, as*h*le.

This is my family's house.

- Oh, yeah? Well, why

don't you prove that?

- James, stop, please!

We were just camping

here for the night.

We've been hiking and

thought it was empty,

and we thought it was abandoned!

- No, stop! We don't

need to tell them sh*t!

They're the one

waving the g*n around!

- Waiting for you to give me

a good f*cking

reason, d*ck hole.

- Jude, will you

stop? Jude, stop!

- Please just let

us grab our stuff.

We won't break or

steal anything.

Please. We were just

spending the night.

- Get your sh*t and get out.

- f*ck, man.

- Ladies and gentlemen,

he does see reason.

- I said go.

- Don't come back.

See? Aren't you glad I

had the g*n now, dude?

- No. That would've been

way better without the g*n.

- Are you kidding me?

Nicky!

(crickets chirping)

- You know, you were

kind of heroic in there.

- I don't feel very heroic.

I feel like a guy

who just had a g*n

jammed in his face.

One moment.

- What is it now?

- [James] Just give me a second.

- What do you

think you're doing?

Stop it! Let's just go!

- Hang on a minute.

- James, please.

This isn't like you.

- Isn't that the point

of this whole trip,

to try to be a

little less like me?

- You know that is not what

Dr. Harper meant, so just stop.

Don't do something crazy.

Haven't we had enough

of that for one day?

- I'm just trying to get

in touch with the inner me.

That's all.

Maybe someone who doesn't

let people walk all over him

and point g*ns at

their wife's face!

So, sorry if that

makes me crazy,

but right now, I'm

okay with that.

So I'm going to do something

that the normal

me would never do.

(somber music)

(James grunts)

And I'm gonna feel

great doing it.

(tire hissing)

(Nicky sighs)

- All right, so I checked

the rest of the house.

No more squatters, not so

much as a f*cking raccoon,

and to make things even better,

Jude has agreed not to ever

take his g*n out ever again.

So maybe we can all

calm down a little bit

and start to enjoy ourselves.

What do y'all say?

- About time.

- Uh, yeah, question.

What if those people

come back here?

- There's no way

they're coming back.

- Yeah. No f*cking way.

(beer can clicks)

(peaceful music)

(fire crackling)

(crickets chirping)

- So, Nicky, what

made your uncle

decide to live all the way

up here like a hermit anyway?

- No, no, no, no, no.

Wait, wait, let me guess.

I am good at this.

- Here we go.

- Shut up.

He witnessed a mob hit

and he had to live out

here to stay off the radar.

(group lightly chuckles)

- He just liked being

away from people, I guess.

You know, he liked

the peace and quiet,

and everything with my parents

is always so high pressure.

You know, sports, school, work.

Honestly, I started

to feel like,

if I failed at any one thing,

I was gonna just snap like

a rubber band, you know?

But I couldn't even

let that happen,

'cause even that

would be a failure,

and everything was

always about the future.

I think that's why

I liked my uncle.

He was only ever interested in

what was happening right

there and then in the moment.

He never really gave a

sh*t about much else,

which is something

I could never do,

so I would come up here

as often as I could.

You know, a long

weekend, half a summer,

if I really busted my

a*s, whatever I could get,

and then I would just

count down the days

so I could come up here

and just do nothing.

You know, bringing you all

up here, I kind of figured

it would be like one

last hurrah, you know?

Give the place a

proper send-off.

- I'll drink to that.

- Same here.

- Yeah.

- Man, I would've loved having

a place like this growing up.

- Oh, yeah?

- Oh, f*ck yeah.

I mean, we had the Boys and

Girls Club after school.

Loads of fun for a skinny,

q*eer little tomboy.

I was Planet f*cking X, man.

They didn't know

what to do with me.

So they did what kids

do. They made up names.

- Kids suck.

Always have, always will.

- I mean, kids will find

anything to mess with you about.

Listen, they made fun of me

because I liked spending

summers up here.

They called me Nicky Sticks

'cause of where I like to be.

- I got called a lot worse

things than Nicky Sticks.

Care to hear a few?

- I'll pass.

(group softly chuckles)

- I would've thought that

you were Mr. Popular.

- I mean, I played sports,

but I mostly just hung

out with this loser.

- Nobody else would

hang out with me

unless I was selling 'em weed.

- These two were inseparable.

- Two against the world, man.

- You know it.

- Well, I am glad to hear

I wasn't the only

loser with no friends.

- And I am glad that

we are all here now.

So, speaking for the group,

thanks, Nicky, for

inviting us up here.

- Cheers.

- Nah, honestly, I should

be thanking you guys.

If y'all hadn't agreed to come,

I'd have been stuck up here

with Jude's goofy

a*s the whole time.

(Jude sarcastically laughs)

- What a f*cking tragedy

that would've been.

For me, I mean.

Seriously, man,

it's nice out here.

There's no distractions,

no cell phones.

It's the perfect opportunity

for me to experience nature.

(Jude laughs)

- Whoa, whoa. m*therf*cker,

are those mushrooms?

- Yeah. This is 90% of the

reason I agreed to come up here.

- Oh, yeah?

Can I have some?

Jude, I'm just asking questions.

- Here.

- Yes!

- Don't say I never

did nothing for you.

That's all I'm giving out, okay?

So nobody else come to ask.

- [Casey] Have fun, babe,

but I get to film it.

- All right.

(Casey chuckles)

- Hey, what are you

always filming anyway?

- I'm just following

this kid around.

The American dream of individual

greatness evolved into

an entire generation's

presumed right to stardom.

Man or monster? Starving

artist or future influencer?

A journey that could

lead to greatness

or into the darkness

of the human soul.

- Why are you like this?

- I'm just saying.

Sometimes the

making of the movie

is better than the movie itself.

I mean, look at "The

Island of Doctor Moreau."

- You're "Doctor Moreau"-ing me?

- Hey!

Calm down, man.

Eat the mushrooms.

(foreboding music)

- Help me.

- No.

- Help me.

- Come on.

Come on, space cowboy.

- [Sarah] We're turning in.

- Ah, all right. Good night.

- [Valarie] See you

assholes tomorrow.

- How about it,

man? You coming in?

- No, no way.

I am perfectly fine right here.

- Okay. All right.

Well, I will see you on

the other side, brother.

Hey, try not to fall

in the fire, all right?

- Don't tell me what to do.

(Jude giggles)

(foreboding music continues)

- [Sarah] I'm saying, who brings

drugs to a camping weekend

and doesn't bring enough

to share with everyone?

Oh, yeah.

- Hey, I'm turning

in. Everybody good?

- I'm gonna stay up and

trip-sit this guy for a while.

(Zach giggling)

- [Nicky] Sounds good.

Night, everybody.

(Casey chuckles)

- Uh, we're gonna turn in too.

See you guys tomorrow.

- Oh, no, no, no. No,

wait, wait, wait, wait.

One more drink. Come on.

Come on. One more drink.

One more drink. Come on.

Here, here, here, here. Please?

One more?

- Maybe just one more.

- Yes! Yes!

Um, okay.

Why don't we

toast this nightcap to the

tortured spirit of these woods

so as not to become

its next meal?

(Zach ominously cackles)

(Valarie chuckles)

- Man, you never

turn it off, do you?

- What?

- The radio talk

show host thing.

- Podcast.

- Whatever.

- You telling me you

don't like podcasts?

- It's just another way for

people to rattle on about

sh*t they don't know

anything about, sorry.

- Come on.

You like true crime and

m*rder and all that sh*t

more than probably

anybody I've ever met,

so just 'cause

you're an outcast,

you think that makes

you too cool for school?

If anything, I mean,

let's be real here,

you're a podcaster's

target market.

(somber music)

- Hm.

(can clinks)

I will never ever

be your target market.

- Mhm.

Okay.

- [Sarah] Thanks

for the drink, Zach.

- Hey, I'm sorry.

You f*cking kidding me?

Will you put that away?

- Yep. Sorry.

(Valarie sighs)

- Oh, sh*t, it's

actually comfortable.

- You know, Zach is a nice guy.

You could go a

little easier on him.

(Valarie sardonically chuckles)

- Come on. He's so weird.

- Since when do you sit

on the side of judgment

with the normals?

(Valarie angrily screams)

- I'm sorry.

I am.

The kid just kind of annoys me.

- Well, he's been my

friend a long time.

He was the first

person I came out to

and he didn't judge me

or treat me like a freak.

He was just my friend, so

please try to be nice.

- Yeah, I'll try.

- Do or do not.

There is no try.

- No, don't you do f*cking

Yoda with me right now.

You know that makes me crazy!

(both chuckle)

Oh, I love you.

What?

(ominous music)

(fire crackling)

(crickets chirping)

- [Ghostly Voice]

Jude, into the forest.

Into the forest.

It's time to come.

- Whoa.

The trees are talking to me.

- [Ghostly Voice] Jude,

come into the forest.

- What's up, trees?

- [Ghostly Voice] Come, Jude.

Forest.

(Jude giggling)

(Valarie sighs)

- I...

I want to say it back.

(solemn music)

I really do.

- So just say it.

I've never told anyone

that, not since I was a kid.

- Really? Never?

- Never.

- It's okay.

There is plenty

that I haven't done,

like take a girl home to meet

my parents, for instance.

- That's why you

wanted to come out here

instead of going with them.

- No, no, no.

Just a little.

I don't know how

they're gonna react,

and there's so much sh*t

between me and them,

but, but, but

I am willing to take

that chance with you,

and maybe you'll be willing

to take one with me?

(solemn music continues)

- You wanna know

why I don't say it?

- Yeah.

- Because love is a trap.

It's a con artist word used

to catch wounded animals.

When I was a kid, my

parents fought constantly.

You couldn't get away from it.

I asked them one time why they

didn't just get a divorce,

and you know what they said?

They said they couldn't

because they loved me.

Love, like it was

some great fever.

One night, it got really bad,

and my dad asked me

to take out the trash.

He did that sometimes so

they could yell extra loud,

so I did.

I took the bags out

to the big green bins

outside, like always.

That's when I heard

the first shot

inside the house.

I started to run back when

I heard the second shot.

I froze.

I must have stood there

for five minutes straight,

just staring at my front

door, terrified to go inside.

Eventually, I did

and I found them.

My dad had k*lled my mom

and then himself.

The last thing my dad said

to me was that he loved me.

I went to live with

my aunt in a new town.

That's where I met

everyone here, actually.

The only good to

come of that mess.

In junior high. I

realized I was g*y,

and when my aunt

found out about that,

it was church night and day,

trying her hardest

to pray the g*y away.

The worst of any of it, though,

was that she said she did

it because she loved me,

and maybe,

if we prayed hard enough,

God would love me too.

So, no, I've never, never

said those words to anyone,

and I'm not even

sure I know how.

- It's okay.

I knew something happened

to you as a kid, but

I had no idea.

(solemn music continues)

It's okay.

Come here.

Come on.

(Valarie sighs)

My love is not a trap

and you are no wounded animal.

You are the strongest

person I have ever met.

Just let me say it to you

and mean it,

and you don't have to say

anything at all, okay?

- [Sarah] Okay.

(solemn music continues)

(Valarie sighs)

(Zach softly sighs)

- So,

what's the documentary

gonna be anyway?

- I don't know what

kind of movie it is yet.

I'm just gonna film

and see where it goes.

- It's about me though, right?

- Yeah. You're the star, baby.

- Well, doesn't it depend

on how you make me look?

- I'm just pointing the camera.

There are no secrets

from the all-seeing eye.

(Zach softly scoffs)

- You don't think

I have secrets?

- No. That's what

I love about you.

You're an open book.

That's what makes you a

good podcast host too.

- You think everything I do

is just some kind of

big joke, don't you?

You know, sometimes I

feel like you hope I fail

'cause it'll make a

better movie for you.

- That's how you really feel?

- I don't know.

Sometimes.

- Okay, if that's

how you really feel,

then go ahead and say it one

more time for the camera.

- Man, f*ck this.

(foreboding music)

- sh*t.

- [Ghostly Voice]

Come here. Come, Jude.

(ghostly voices

indistinctly whispering)

- Any of you trees

hear that noise too?

- [Ghostly Voice] Come closer.

Closer, Jude. Come.

- f*ck.

- [Ghostly Voice] Closer. Come.

(ghostly voices

indistinctly whispering)

(crickets chirping)

(somber music)

(Zach scoffs)

- An open book.

(Zach sighs)

Man, f*ck me.

(somber music continues)

(door creaks)

- [Sarah] Hey.

- Oh, hey.

- Couldn't sleep either?

- I guess not.

Since when do you smoke?

- I quit.

- Okay.

(Zach weakly chuckles)

Uh, can you spare one?

Thanks.

(ghostly voices

indistinctly whispering)

(tense music)

(intense music)

(g*nsh*t bangs)

- What the f*ck was that?

- I don't know.

(foreboding music)

- Did you guys hear

that? It sounded close.

(Ryder wheezing)

(Ryder coughs)

- Oh, sh*t.

(Ryder coughs)

Oh, sh*t.

- What the f*ck did you do?

- It was an accident.

- What the f*ck did you do?

- I didn't know it was her!

(James screams)

- You're dead, m*therf*cker!

Dead!

(Jude grunting)

(flesh squelches)

(tense music)

(Jude wheezes)

(crickets chirping)

(fire crackling)

(Ryder groans)

- Shh, shh, shh.

Try not to talk.

(Ryder wheezing)

Don't try to talk.

No, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

(James gasps)

What am I gonna do?

What am I gonna do?

(James softly panting)

(crickets chirping)

(door creaks)

- [Nicky] Hey, guys, what

the hell is going on?

- It was definitely a

g*nsh*t. We just heard it.

- Where's Jude?

- Nobody's seen him.

- How long since

you heard the shot?

- Just a few minutes ago.

- He's probably just out there,

f*cking around, you know?

I just hope he hasn't

shot himself in the foot.

(group weakly chuckles)

- So, what, do we

go looking for him?

- God damn it.

- Uh, I'll get some flashlights.

- Yeah, yeah, thanks.

- [Zach] Right.

- I shouldn't have let him

trip out there by himself.

(door slams)

Some of us should stay back

in case he comes

back to the house.

The rest of you

should come with me

once Zach gets back

with the flashlights.

We'll find him.

(tense music)

(Sarah gasps)

- Looks like I found you first.

- [Nicky] Hey, hey, man.

- Back the f*ck up.

I don't know who you people

are and I don't give a sh*t.

You come after me

and you f*cking

come after my wife!

This time, I've got the g*n

and you're gonna listen to me.

This was supposed to be

a therapeutic weekend.

This was supposed to be

something that we could control.

I was supposed to

feel empowered.

Dr. Harper doesn't

f*cking know sh*t!

- Who?

- Shut up!

I am tired of being the victim!

(eerie music)

Are you filming

this, you sick f*ck?

Oh, that's f*cking it!

(group gasps)

(flesh squelches)

(ominous music)

(Sarah softly gasps)

- f*ck.

Way to f*cking go, man.

- I just saw him

point the g*n at you

and I just kind of lost control.

- I told you documentaries

are always better.

(somber music)

(Zach shakily panting)

- So are we just

gonna sit around,

staring at this as*h*le's

dead body all night?

- Look, let's just cover

him for now, all right?

It's late and we still don't

know what happened to Jude.

- I think it's pretty obvious

what happened to Jude.

That g*nsh*t was probably this

f*ck getting his payback!

- What was he saying

about his wife?

- I don't f*cking know!

I don't know, but he was

talking crazy, right?

He probably k*lled her himself.

- Go and piss the wrong

guy off in the woods

and you are done for, man.

That's like scary

movie rule number one.

- All right, stop it, okay?

Now, Jude could be

perfectly fine right now,

but we're not going

running around out there

in the woods any more tonight.

We stay together until

first light at least.

- I think we should go now.

- No. These back roads are

tough enough when you're sober.

I don't think we should risk it.

Get some sleep and

then head out there

first thing in the morning

when we can actually

see out there.

- What about that?

- I mean, you know

how to sh**t, right?

- Yeah, a little.

I just don't want

that thing is all.

(ominous music)

- Okay.

All right. Look, I'll

hold onto it for now.

- You know how to sh**t it?

- It seems pretty

simple. I think I got it.

- All right.

Let's get some sleep

and then we go.

(eerie music)

(solemn music)

(crickets chirping)

(bird caws)

- Oh, no, no, no! f*ck!

- [Sarah] What?

What is it now?

- They're slashed, all four.

- [Zach] Jesus, f*ck.

- We're not getting

anywhere. Not like this.

- Just drive on the

f*cking flats, man.

- If the road was paved,

maybe, but not in this sh*t.

- sh*t.

What are you doing?

- I'm texting my friend

for help, all right?

He'll know what to do.

The phones don't work

out here. Remember?

- It's worth a shot, all right?

- No, it's not!

No one has had a bar of

signal since we got here!

- It literally doesn't hurt

anything for me to try, okay?

- Who are you trying?

- Greg.

- The podcast guy?

- Yeah, the podcast guy!

- Jesus, Zach.

- What? I mean, he'd

know what to do, okay?

He could track our phones,

get the f*cking

cops out here, and-

- Track our phones?

- Listen, I'm not

sleeping in that house

with a dead body, okay?

Can we please at least

do something about that?

- All right, you can

help me move him to

the back shed for now.

- Why me?

- Because you brought it up

and you're the one that put

the ax in his head, remember?

- Okay.

f*ck.

- Oh, good work.

Just keep texting your

f*cking stupid little friend.

No, come on!

Oh, you know, I bet

you have a lot of material

for your show now, right?

You must be happy about it.

Are you happy? Are you happy?

Everything turned out the

way you said it would.

- Just leave me alone, okay?

Please.

(phone clicking)

- What do you not get?

What do you not get?

This thing is f*cking

useless out here.

- f*cking b*tch. You

realize how much that costs?

You're buying me a new

one. You know that, right?

- I'll help you. Let's go.

- Ow.

You see that?

- Come on.

(Zach wryly chuckles)

Oh.

Oh, f*ck me.

(somber music)

(crickets buzzing)

(intense metal music)

(metal vocalist

indistinctly singing)

(metal vocalist

indistinctly screaming)

(phone buzzing)

(metal vocalist continues

indistinctly screaming)

- Hey, cover for me! I gotta go!

Did you hear what I said?

- I hear you!

Damn it! You see what

I mean about this guy?

(intense metal music continues)

- All right. Let's get

this guy out of here.

- Babe, what are you doing?

- I'm sorry. The camera

goes where the action is.

(solemn music)

(birds chirping)

(Val groans)

- f*ck, man.

This guy's heavier

than I thought he'd be.

- Look, I hope this

is the only time

I ever have to do

some sh*t like this!

What the hell are you doing?

- I'm documenting.

- You think that's a good idea?

- Why not? It's not like

it was cold-blooded m*rder.

This guy attacked us.

- Yeah, but it just

seems wrong, doesn't it?

- I have the whole

thing on camera,

including him

pulling a g*n on us.

You're lucky I'm carrying

this thing around.

- Back me up, Val.

- Hey, man, I don't

give a sh*t either way.

Can we just finish

carrying this guy?

(group distantly chattering)

(group continues

distantly chattering)

(body thumps)

- Where are you going?

- Dude, this is a lot.

I'm mentally f*cking fried,

so I'm gonna go clear my head,

- Nicky, seriously, don't worry.

I'm getting video

evidence of everything,

and when this sh*t ends up in

court, you'll be thanking me.

I mean, who knows?

This could be like the next

true crime craze on Netflix.

- Look, I just

don't want anything

to come back and

bite us in the a*s.

- Nothing can bite

us in the a*s.

If anything, this

camera's gonna be

our "get out of jail free" card,

so relax.

(glass clatters)

(tense music)

(flesh squelches)

(body thumps)

- Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

Hey, hey, hey, whoa, wait! Wait!

(Nicky groaning)

(Nicky panting)

f*ck, f*ck, f*ck!

Where's the safety?

f*ck!

(Nicky gasping)

(Ryder grunts)

(Nicky grunts)

(Ryder shouts)

(both grunting)

(birds chirping)

(tense music)

(both grunting)

Uh-uh, uh-uh!

(Nicky grunting)

Stop! Just f*cking die!

(Ryder wails)

(Nicky groans)

(Nicky grunts)

(Ryder groaning)

(Nicky panting)

(Nicky triumphantly chuckling)

Oh.

(Nicky groans)

Hey, guys.

Oh no.

(body thumps)

(wagon creaking)

(gentle music)

(animals distantly chirping)

(ominous music)

(Val gasps)

(door creaks)

- They're dead!

They're dead! They're dead!

They're dead! They're dead!

f*cking Christ!

- Babe, what's the matter?

What's the matter?

- Oh my God!

They're f*cking dead! I

don't know what happened!

- Sarah, we have

to get out of here.

We have to get out

of here, please.

- What the hell is

she talking about?

- It's fine. It's okay.

It's fine.

Show us what you're

talking about.

(Val shakily gasps)

(eerie music)

Oh my God.

What happened to them?

(Zach retches)

- Isn't it obvious?

I mean, there's

somebody else out here.

- What are you saying?

- What the f*ck does it

sound like I'm saying?

Okay, these two didn't

just k*ll each other.

Somebody did this.

- Why? Why is this happening?

- I told you guys.

I f*cking, I told you guys

these woods are dangerous!

Okay, now we pissed

off the wrong people

and they're picking

us off or something.

- We don't know.

We don't know that Jude is dead.

- Oh, man, come on.

(Zach maniacally chuckles)

I mean, he's been

missing since last night

when all this bullshit started.

Face it.

He's dead too.

- We can't know that for sure!

- Oh, please.

Jesus f*cking Christ.

Would you open your eyes?

- This,

this is real.

Okay, we are in a k*ll

or be k*lled situation.

I mean, we're

completely cut off.

These backwoods psychos could

be watching us right now.

- Whatever's happening,

I think, for now, we

should assume Zach's right.

- I don't want to die.

- We aren't going to die.

- Okay.

So what do we do?

(foreboding music)

(thunder rumbling)

- Okay, so now what?

- I think we're ready to

hike, but check outside.

It looks like there's a

storm coming this way.

- sh*t.

It's almost sundown.

We don't wanna get stuck

in the dark in the rain.

- Are you out of your mind?

You're suggesting we

stay another night?

- I'm sorry. Do you have

a better idea, Valarie?

- He's right.

None of us have

slept since yesterday

and I'm not really crazy about

hiking in the middle

of nowhere in a storm.

- sh*t.

- I don't like it either.

- Same here.

- So we're in agreement?

We do the terrible plan?

- Yeah.

- Yeah.

- Awesome.

(duct tape crackles)

(dramatic music)

(nails clink)

(thunder rumbles)

(keys jangle)

(window creaks)

(locks click)

(thunder rumbles)

- I can't sleep.

- Me neither.

Anyone think to

bring some melatonin?

- Negative.

(crickets chirping)

(thunder faintly rumbles)

- I was gonna ask her

to marry me, you know.

(thunder cracks)

- Casey?

- This weekend. Yeah.

I mean, I had my

doubts about it.

I think

a part of me was

scared, but yeah.

That was the plan.

I even got the ring

and everything.

I just figure you only get

so many chances in life

to really love someone.

Might as well grab it

while I can, you know?

Funny how plans change, right?

- Hysterical.

- I just keep thinking

about them out there.

I mean, we didn't move 'em

or cover 'em up or anything.

- It's okay.

They're fine. I'm

worried about us.

- What if an animal

gets to them?

- It's not safe. Let's just

worry about that tomorrow.

(somber music)

(thunder rumbles)

- That's it. I'm

going out there.

- What?

Zach, what are you doing?

(g*n clicks)

- Look, I just, I need to

cover 'em with something, okay?

Before they get rained on.

I just gotta get that

f*cking camera off her face

or I'm never gonna

be able to sleep.

- Zach, don't.

- I'll go with you.

- No! No, no, no, no, you stay.

I'll help.

- Valarie, no.

- It's okay.

I got this.

Really.

- Are you sure?

- Yeah, let's go.

- Thanks.

- Sarah, just lock the

door and stay around

so you can let us back in, okay?

- Okay. Just get back safe.

- Promise.

- Val, wait!

(tender music)

I love you.

I know your love isn't a trap.

Everything else in

the world is the trap.

Your love is a key.

(Valarie joyfully sobs)

- It only took a near-death

experience to get you to say it.

- Better late than never, right?

- Mhm.

(tender music continues)

- Hurry back.

(door creaks)

(ominous music)

(thunder booms)

- Thanks for coming with me.

- Don't mention it.

- Hey, I know you and I

haven't exactly hit it on.

- Christ, Zach.

Listen to me.

I'm terrible at

making new friends.

New people kinda freak me out,

but we are so out of

our comfort zone here.

Please don't make it any

weirder than it has to be.

Let's just save the touchy-feely

stuff for later, okay, man?

- Yeah, yeah, okay.

- We have to cover them up

until we can figure out

what to do tomorrow.

- I think I saw a tarp.

- Perfect. Where?

- It was just over there,

behind that corner.

- Okay. I'll go take a look.

- I got your back.

(crickets chirping)

(foreboding music)

(knife clanks)

(thunder rumbles)

What the f*ck is this?

- [Val] What? You see something?

- I mean, I see this falling

out of your back pocket.

It's covered in blood, Valarie.

Care to comment on that?

- It's not mine.

- It was in your pocket!

- I know.

I took it from that guy and I

don't even know why I took it.

I'm sorry. I swear.

- That guy came at us

with a g*n, not a knife.

I know, but he had a knife.

- Nicky was k*lled with a knife,

but we didn't find one anywhere.

- Wait, no. That wasn't me!

(thunder rumbles)

And Casey.

You were the only one out

there with Nicky and Casey

when they were both k*lled.

Why didn't you see anything?

I mean, that's a little

bit convenient, Valarie,

now that I think about it.

Come on.

- Put the g*n down here,

man. I didn't k*ll anyone.

- Well, you're just an

innocent girl, right?

Just so happened to be

gone with no f*cking alibi

while both of my

friends were m*rder*d!

Oh, man, it's pretty

easy to just blame it on

crazy people in

the woods, right?

I mean, I sure thought so.

(thunder rumbles)

The only thing is

I already took care

of that guy, didn't I?

I mean, I honestly,

I honestly did not

think I had it in me,

but I took care of him, all

right, to protect my friends,

and that's what

I'm gonna do again!

- Zach, look out!

(Zach groans)

- Ow! What the f*ck?

(Val grunts)

(Zach grunts)

(Val groans)

(Val gasping)

(tense music)

- Sarah!

(Val panting)

Sarah, he's crazy!

He's crazy! We have to go!

- No!

- We have to get out!

(tense music continues)

(Val gasps)

- Val?

- Run.

- Oh, f*ck.

What did I do?

Wait!

Wait, Sarah!

Sarah!

(suspenseful music)

(thunder booms)

Sarah, stop!

(suspenseful music continues)

(Sarah panting)

(thunder rumbles)

(Sarah gasps)

(dramatic music)

(Sarah whimpers)

(thunder booms)

(rain pattering)

(tense music)

(thunder rumbles)

Sarah!

Sarah, are you in here?

(Sarah weakly whimpers)

Oh, come on!

You ran off before you gave me

a chance to explain anything.

I didn't want to

have to chase you.

Hey.

You wanna hear something

really f*cked up?

(Zach sighs)

Okay.

Here goes.

I've been in love with you

ever since we first met.

(Zach sighs)

Okay.

I said it.

And I would have all

these fantasies about

telling you how I felt,

sweeping you off your feet.

You were so sad,

and I thought I was gonna be

the one to make you happy.

Well, obviously, I didn't have

the courage to say anything,

and then, one day, you

tell me you like girls

and you have a crush on one.

- Stephanie Waterman,

of all f*cking people?

And, clearly, nothing's changed

because I still

do not understand

your taste in women at all.

So I stayed the good friend,

even though I knew it would

never work out between us,

but I never stopped

loving you, Sarah,

and then Casey came along

and I loved her too.

As much as I could anyway,

because I was holding

back most of what I had

for an impossible cause!

(Zach screams)

f*ck!

God damn it!

(Sarah groans)

f*cking b*tch!

Get the f*ck over here!

(Sarah gasps)

You f*cking b*tch!

(Zach angrily growls)

(flesh squelches)

(Zach groans)

- f*cking psycho.

(Valarie grunts)

(Zach screams)

(Valarie grunts)

(Zach shouts)

(Valarie groans)

(tense music continues)

(body thumps)

(Zach groaning)

(Zach panting)

(Sarah grunts)

(Sarah panting)

- Please, I don't wanna die.

(Sarah shouting)

(somber music)

(thunder rumbles)

(Sarah wailing)

(Sarah hysterically screams)

(Sarah whimpers)

(somber music continues)

(Valarie coughing)

(Valarie hysterically chuckles)

- Hey, girl.

- I thought you were dead.

- I think you might

have been right.

- Don't say that.

(Valarie wryly chuckles)

- It's f*cking hard to breathe.

- It's okay. Just relax.

Just relax, okay? You can't go.

You can't go, Val.

- Hey, hey, hey, hey.

(Sarah sobbing)

You said you loved me.

- Yeah.

(gentle music)

Yeah. Yeah, I did.

- Do you regret it?

- Best decision I ever made.

(Valarie softly chuckles)

(Sarah sobs)

No, no, no, no, no, no.

No, no. You can't go.

Please don't go.

(Sarah indistinctly murmurs)

(tender music)

No.

(Sarah sniffles)

(Sarah sobs)

(Sarah softly whimpering)

(Sarah softly sobs)

(gentle music)

(gentle music continues)

(car rumbling)

(Sarah screams)

- sh*t!

(tires screeching)

(Sarah shrieks)

sh*t!

(glass clatters)

(engine sputtering)

(crickets chirping)

(door creaks)

(car dinging)

(door slams)

(Greg groans)

(solemn music)

(Greg gasps)

No, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no!

Please, please, no,

no, no, no, no, no!

Zach!

Zach, where are you, man?

Ah, damn it.

Hey, Zach!

Zach, man, I called the cops.

I finally got through

to 'em, but God knows

when the f*ck they're gonna

get all the way out here.

Ah, man.

(Greg sighs)

Zach, I'm coming in!

(Greg grunts)

(tripwire twangs)

(flesh squelches)

(Greg groaning)

(somber music)

(owl hooting)

(siren distantly wailing)

(somber music continues)

(police radio chattering)

- Why don't you go

check out over there?

sh*t.

Got a body, dead!

- [Officer] I got two more!

- What in God's name were

these kids up to out here?

- What the f*ck?

- All right. Let's call this in.

(solemn music)

Hey, what the hell was the

address of this place again?

- [Sarah] Hey!

Hey, I'm here!

- Please!

- Call an ambulance!

Let's get an ambulance out here!

It's okay.

It's okay. We got you.

Please, I need you to tell

me what happened out there.

Ma'am, ma'am, you have

to tell me what happened.

(Sarah sobs)

Ma'am, please stay

with me. Stay with me.

Come on.

- What happened?

- Yes. What happened?

- I have no

f*cking clue.

(solemn music continues)

(Sarah gasps)

Please.

Please tell me you

have a cigarette.

- No. I quit last year.

It's unhealthy.

- Who cares?

(somber folk music)

(Sarah hysterically laughing)

And Mary may come

And Mary may go

Hello, hello,

hello, hello, hello

And she speaks to me

if she speaks at all

At all, at all, at

all, at all, at all

Lie in the ditch and

die, you son of a b*tch

For I will die as

you have never died

For a lock of her hair

I would die anywhere

For a look in her eyes

I would die a thousand times

I would die a thousand times

And the devil may come

And the devil may go

Hello, hello,

hello, hello, hello

And he speaks to me

If he speaks at all

At all, at all, at

all, at all, at all

Lay in the ditch and

die, you son of a b*tch

For I will wake as

you have never woke

Climb up on the cross in

the sky like an albatross

For I will die as

you have never died

For a lock of her hair

I would die anywhere

For a look in her eyes

I would die a thousand times

I would die a thousand times

For a lock of her hair

I would die anywhere

For a look in her eyes

I would die a thousand times

I would die a thousand times

(intense rock music)

I lost my sh*t

And found myself

Sick of doubting

my mental health

Beginning to live

like the end times

And I'm so sorry

I apologized

For thinking, for

seeing, for reading

The writing on the

wall, erase it all.

I learned my f*cking lesson

And now I press on

Calling out my doubts

My self-esteem is

I think it's time

I let it all go

(rock music decrescendos)
