Treading Water (2024)

Post by bunniefuu »

[Reverberant hum;

Faint, indistinct voices]

[Man] Every morning...

I wake up...

and I count the bricks on the wall.

I do it because, to me, it's important.

If I don't,

I think something terrible'll happen.

Like... I'll die, or my mum'll die.

And I know it's not true.

f*cking hell, 'course it's not true.

It can't be.

But at the same time, I can't ignore it.

I'm controlled by it.

And it's very f*cking convincing.

Putting me tongue on the middle brick

for ten seconds finishes the job.

Seals the deal.

I won't die.

I'll live today.

And today is the 153rd and last day

I'll do it.

[Ruminative music]

Wait there.

[Keys rattle]

[Door shuts]

[Music continues]

There's your 76 discharge grant.

Here are your belongings.

And could you sign here,

to say that you've got everything?

Once you've signed that,

get changed in the cubicle.

[Music continues]

[Keys rattle]

[Keys rattle]

[Traffic hums]

[Music continues]

[Car horn]

[Music fades]

19.60 for that.

- Thanks.

- [Cash register opens]

- There you go.

- [Man] Nice one, mate.

- [Clerk] Have a nice day, now. See ya.

- And you, mate, same.

- [Coins clatter]

- [Driver] Thank you.

[Brakes hiss]

[Brakes hiss]

[Toy car whirs]

[Whirring continues]

[Whirring continues]

[Whirring continues]

[Whirring continues]

[Whirring continues]

[Mother] Max!

Max!

I'm talking to you, don't ignore me!

Your face is a mess, it's dirty.

Come here now.

Your face is dirty, I need to wipe it.

- No!

- Do you want me to take your car off you?

Well, get here now, then.

[Uneasy music]

[Man] People normally inject in the groin

because their veins have collapsed.

You see, I do it to hide the marks.

Like, if people see marks,

they get suspicions.

They tell someone.

Someone comes, and they try to help you.

Just makes sense

to stay clear of all that.

[Ruminative music]

[Dog barks in distance]

[Buzzer;

Music fades]

- [Woman, in intercom] Hi, can I help?

- Danny Prentice.

- Got told to see Karen.

- [Woman] Push the door.

[Buzzer]

[Man] How many programmes you got running?

[Woman] Quite a few.

- [Man] Tried shutting a few down?

- [Woman] That'd help.

Can you sign in for me, please, Danny?

- What time is it?

- Ten to 12:00.

If you take a seat,

Karen'll be with you in a minute.

[TV on, faint]

[Chair creaks]

[Man 2] Change the channel.

Jay, f*cking change it.

I know you can hear me.

Hi, Danny, I'm Karen.

- How are you doing?

- I'm all right, yeah.

- Do you wanna come through?

- [Man 2] Change it!

- Sorry, just hang on there a sec.

- [Man 2] Change it! Change it!

- Change it! Cha...

- [Karen] Rob... Rob...

Enough.

He's a stubborn b*stard.

We're watching Bargain Hunt,

and he's turned it over.

- You what?

- Haven't even got to the auction yet.

I wanna see how much money they make.

It's bang out of order, that, c**t!

- Hey, Rob, enough.

- [Man 3] Hey, Karen. Karen.

- That's as*ault, that is.

- Jay, just change it back, will you?

- Sorry, Danny.

- What you on about, you? "as*ault"?

[Man 3] ABH, lad.

Proper serious stuff, that is.

- [Door creaks]

- [Karen] Do you wanna come through?

- [Man] Do you mind if I roll a cig?

- No, there's no smoking in the house.

So, you can smoke in the garden

or out the front,

but not in the house, okay?

I think it's good

the way you've handle this, you know.

I mean, sorting out your accommodation

whilst you're in prison's,

like, a really good thing.

You've been organised,

and you've done well there.

- They helped me do it in there, so...

- Hey, not everyone does it.

So, you'll be here on a trial period

to begin with,

and we try and make sure

that this place fits for you,

and you fit with the other lads

that live here, all right?

So everybody's comfortable.

That make sense?

- Yeah.

- [Karen] Yeah.

I mean, a lot of lads

have used this house as a stepping stone

to getting their own Council flat.

But while you're here, we concentrate

on following the rules, yeah?

The house has to stay safe.

We don't want you using drugs.

No drinking, no wild parties,

no inviting people over to stay overnight

who don't live here, all right?

I know we all need certain things,

but we have to think about

what is right for the house.

So, no girls can stay over.

Or boys, or whatever.

[Karen grunts, yelps]

[Panicked breathing]

- No!

- [She yelps, gasps]

[Panicked breathing]

[Karen cries out, punches thud]

[He roars]

[Sustained tone;

Karen whimpers, breathes shakily]

[She sobs, whimpers]

[He breathes shakily]

[Tone fades]

[Karen] We're here in the house

to help you until 5pm,

and then me and the staff leave,

and the house is yours to look after.

We expect the house to stay in one piece.

The staff here are great.

They'll help you achieve your goals.

[Man]Things just come into my head.

Like, horrible thoughts.

- See, I've got these ideas that...

- [Karen speaks, muffled]

they make me feel f*cked-up

for even thinking them.

They've done that since I was a kid.

And... it's just got worse.

I'm aware of your mental health issues,

and I know you had a few sessions

whilst you were in prison.

I think it's important

that you continue having therapy

now that you're out of prison.

The aim is to help you rebuild.

So, if you think

that you're gonna start using drugs

or stealing again,

you have got to talk to me.

Do you know what I'm talking about?

- Okay.

- Yeah, no problem. I get it. Thank you.

Okay, I'll show you around.

[Chair rattles]

[Creaking]

[Karen] I'll introduce you to the lads.

So, there's seven of you

living in the house at the moment.

A couple of lads, they're out. Everyone,

just give me a few minutes, please.

This is Danny.

He's gonna be moving into the house.

So, you've got Jay, Rob, Gavin and Aiden.

And then you've also got Ryan and Jeff.

They're both out.

The lads will tell you

it's a nice place to live, won't you?

- Five-star facilities here, mate.

- Breakfast in bed, is it?

Karen, you got these all over the place?

- What?

- Cameras.

- On you like a rash in here.

- Rob. Don't listen to him.

He's only winding you up.

They're in the living room and the office.

- They're not in your rooms.

- [Rob] They're everywhere, mate.

In the bogs and everything.

Karen watches 'em personally.

She goes through the tapes,

she files 'em.

- Rob, wind your neck in.

- Just don't like being filmed.

f*cking Beyonc over here.

[He inhales flem sharply, splutters]

[Karen] Come on,

I'll show you to your room.

[TV continues playing]

[Karen] Now you've got the keys, you won't

need to sign in any more, all right?

[Door clacks, creaks]

There you go.

If you need anything,

just ask the staff downstairs.

[Clacking, rattling]

[Pen clicks]

[Pen clicks]

[Clicking speeds up]

[Clicking stops]

[Drawers rattle]

[Clatter]

[He breathes shakily]

[Crunching]

[Muffled moaning;

He gags]

[He breathes heavily]

[He gulps wetly]

[He breathes shakily]

[Melancholy music]

[He exhales]

[Music continues, door shuts]

[Knock on door]

[Door creaks, music fades]

- Hello, Son.

- [Danny] Hello!

- Come in.

- [Danny chuckles]

- Hiya.

- [Danny] Hiya. You all right?

- [Mother] Oh, I've missed you.

- I've missed you, too, Mum.

- [Mother] Come in, then.

- [Danny inhales, exhales]

- [Door shuts]

- [Mother] Doing all right?

- Me? Yeah, Mum, I...

- [Mother] Good, good.

I put some clothes and stuff

in a bag for you.

There's not much.

- We'll have to get you more bits.

- You shouldn't have done that.

[Mother]

Well, you'll need things, won't you?

- I mean, that's not enough, is it?

- It'll be all right.

- Are you hungry?

- [Danny] Um, yeah, very.

Come on, then.

Let's go and get some food down ya.

- [Danny] Let's do it.

- [Mother] Look who's here!

- You want some gravy, love?

- [Cutlery clinks]

- Oh, nah, I'm all right.

- [John] I'll have a bit.

Ta.

So, what's this place like, then?

Are they looking after you?

Mm-hm.

Will you have to cook for yourself?

It's just a house, Mum

So, yeah, you do everything.

- Will you have to cook, though?

- Yeah.

- Yeah, I'll cook.

- What will you cook?

- Egg and chips.

- Egg and chips?

- Well, can you do that?

- f*cking Jesus, Mum, yeah.

Mum, what are you on about?

Are you doing some kind

of special interview with him?

Eh!

Be quiet, you,

and don't be so bloody cheeky.

So, Danny, where is it, then?

- This place you're stopping.

- The gaff?

It's not far.

I'd say it's about a 20-minute walk.

Not bad. Well...

if you don't want eggs and chips,

you know you can come here, don't ya?

Nice one, John.

Appreciate it, thank you.

Just really glad you're doing well.

We all are.

You've got some skills there.

I mean, why eat it?

What's the point?

- At least put the carrots in order.

- Oi! Get off me plate, don't touch it.

- I mean, the big one's...

- I said, don't touch it.

- I've told you to never do...

- Yeah, but it's not a perfect circle,

- and now it's annoying me.

- You've got gravy on me hand, man.

- [Mother] Can we just eat the food?

- He's the one not eating.

[John] I, eh... bumped into Cooky.

- [Danny] Uh, Cooky?

- With the pallets.

[Danny] Yeah. Yeah, vaguely, yeah.

- Bumped into him.

- [Danny] Right.

Said he might have a bit of graft for ya.

Mm!

Only if you want it.

What the f*ck?!

Are you f*cking tapped?!

[Mother]

What have you done that for?!

You need f*cking help!

Can't promise, but I'll ask.

Right, eh... Yeah, sound. Nice one.

- [John] Yeah?

- Yeah, man, yeah.

[Sombre music]

[Danny] I've took heroin

to control my thoughts for years now.

Before that, it was booze.

Heroin, it's a little medicine...

which gives me relief from meself.

Without the heroin, I can't stay sane.

You've got to be controlled

to stay in society with a habit.

People do it.

You just need the right set-up.

I feel a difference in me, you know?

I just feel different to other addicts.

I mean, yeah, I'm the same

in the fact that we all want comfort,

we all want escape...

we all want f*cking love.

I don't think their heads are like mine.

I guess I'm doing it to be normal.

- [Music fades]

- [John, muffled] Danny?

- [Knock on door]

- Danny?

- [John knocks]

- Da...

- [Mother] Just leave it...

- He's doing f*cking gear!

He's doing gear in my house!

I want him out my f*cking house!

[Muffled]

Danny, open this f*cking door!

- Tell him to open the door.

- Just...

- Tell him to open the f*cking door.

- Just leave it, will you?

[John] Get him out.

I'm gonna f*cking strangle you, mister,

when you get out of here!

John, man,

what are you f*cking talking about?

I'm talking 'bout you

doing gear in my f*cking house!

No, I'm not, man.

I can prove it to ya.

- Open the door, then.

- Give me half a second.

[Mother] You're not helping, are ya?

f*cking prove it! f*cking prove it!

You're doing gear in my house!

- I'm not...

- You're doing gear in my f*cking house!

Get out my f*cking house!

I've brought you up from being a lad,

and you're doing gear in my house?!

Just leave him!

[Danny] Don't f*cking touch me.

Mum, you're with a c**t!

[Punch thuds, Danny groans]

- Get off him!

- f*cking brought you up!

[Danny] Oh, Mum...

Has he hurt you, sweetheart? Eh?

What am I supposed to do, eh?

I don't know what to do.

- What am I supposed to do?

- [Danny] I don't know!

I can't f*cking help it.

I'm sorry, I just can't...

[Emma] Your bag.

I'm sorry, Emma.

[Mother] I'll see you soon, Sonny.

[Mother sobs]

[Melancholy music]

[Sobbing continues]

[Music continues;

Bustling chatter]

Yes, mate. You all right?

It's Danny.

Yeah, yeah, I'm all right, I'm all right.

I'm just seeing if you're about for one.

- [Glass thuds]

- Off the phone, you twat!

Yeah, yeah, I know it, I know it.

About a half-hour?

Yeah, all right, sound.

Yeah, I'll be there.

All right. Safe, safe, safe.

[Music continues;

Laughter in distance]

- You after some business?

- [Danny] Nah, I'm all right.

[Music fades]

Oi!

Don't you remember me?

I know you.

- Do ya?

- [Danny] Yeah, I do.

Laura.

- Yeah.

- [Danny] f*cking hell!

Come on, man, look at me.

Apart from this fluff here,

I ain't changed that much.

Do you not remember me?

I used to touch sh*t at school.

Used to touch chairs

and sh*t like that, eh?

- Danny.

- [Danny] Yes, man!

- No way!

- sh*t!

- You weirdo. How are ya?

- f*cking hell, man.

Yeah, I'm... I'm okay, yeah.

Are you looking at my stomach?

- What? Nah...

- I'm not getting fat or anything.

- I'm having a baby.

- Right.

Should get one of them T-shirts,

shouldn't I?

- "I'm not fat..."

- Oh, nah, man, you can't tell.

- f*ck off. Yes, you can.

- Nah, you f*cking can't.

- Danny!

- You...

All right, maybe you can

a f*cking little bit, but...

Nah, you look good.

You look really good.

[Danny chuckles softly]

- Is it a boy or a girl?

- Oh, I dunno yet.

I want a little boy

just 'cause I've got a girl,

- but, you know, whatever.

- [Danny] Yeah.

What you down here for, then?

Bit of action?

[Danny] Eh, nah, nah...

I'm looking to score, to be honest.

Um, yeah, dealer said

meet him here in a sec, so...

- I can't believe it's you, man.

- [Laura chuckles]

This is f*cking mad, do you not think?

Can I just...?

Yeah, you're real. f*ck me!

- You're still strange, you, you know.

- [Ruminative music]

[Danny] Your sex drive

should normally disappear on heroin.

Everyone tells you that.

That's what they say.

But the thing is, yeah, I still want it.

It's never left me.

Guess I'm lucky in that way.

f*cking freak of nature, maybe.

Or whatever you wanna call it.

I still get hard-ons.

I can still have a wank.

- [Music fades]

- It's f*cking mad!

- Apart from the big pot belly...

- In fact, here's the little perv now.

One sec, yeah?

I'll be back in a sec, all right?

- I'm sure.

- You... What...?

I'll be back in a sec.

Stay there, yeah? Stay there.

[Hip-hop music plays]

- What's happening?

- All right, mate, yeah.

- Just had a go of that, yeah?

- [Danny] Eh?

- Oh. Nah, nah, mate.

- [Dealer] You gonna?

- Nah, it's not about that, mate.

- f*cking hell, man.

Missed your f*cking chance there, mate.

She's getting off.

- Nice one for that, man.

- Yeah? Yeah, nice one.

- I'll catch you soon, anyways, man.

- See you later.

[Music continues]

[Music becomes muffled]

[Engine revs]

[Pen clicks]

Are they glued on?

They are ridiculous, mate.

They belong to a f*cking giant.

- Get the f*cking toe on that!

- [Jay laughs]

[Rob] Looks like a f*cking finger!

Mate, I think a bit of f*cking sick's

just come in me mouth.

- [Jay laughs]

- [Rob] Innit?

- Can I sniff it?

- I dare ya.

[Rob wheezes, laughs]

Hey, Danny. Danny, come here, lad.

Come here for a second.

Get on this.

What do you reckon, right?Guinness

Book of Records - those feet.

- They want f*cking measuring, don't they?

- They are a bit on the large side, them?

What size are they?

- [Gav] Fourteen.

- Fourteen?!

f*ck off, Jurassic Park!

They're like f*cking dinosaurs!

- That big toe is f*cking mental!

- [Gav] See how mental it is

- when it hits you on the head.

- [Rob] Is it? What are you doing?

- It's hot.

- Well, yeah, it's me tea.

- Well, I didn't...

- [Rob stammers mockingly]

- What?

- [Rob stammers mockingly]

Well, I didn't f*cking drink it, did I?

- [Rob] What's the matter with ya?

- What's the matter with you?

- Why are you getting so f*cking upset?

- I'm not.

[Rob] You are!

- It's all right, Danny.

- Have a nice day, mate.

Danny!

Danny!

Danny, stay away

from that f*cking crack pipe.

[All laugh]

Innit? Innit?

[Woman] Come on in.

Um, sorry to keep you waiting.

Do you wanna take a seat?

There seems to be a bit of a theme

at the moment. Busy.

Um...

I'm Janet, and I'll...

When you're here,

you can talk about anything.

I've looked through your records,

so I've kinda got an idea,

but it would be more useful

to hear from you.

How's it been going in your new place?

Are you settling in?

It's better than the last place.

So, what I can gather is,

you're open to staying off drugs

and you want help with your OCD.

Not sure you're going to be able

to change much.

Are you saying I'm not good enough?

How've you been feeling at the moment?

Are you still using drugs?

- Are you gonna tell anyone?

- I won't do that.

I'm guessing that you're still using.

Small amounts.

Little bits. To stop me going nuts.

Why small amounts?

I supposed the tiny doses

just sort me head out.

Or it keeps me OCD in check.

It's a treatment.

Y-Yeah.

Well, I reckon

most doctors wouldn't medicate heroin.

I want you to get

on the methadone program me.

Get off heroin.

I can speak to your GP about it.

We'll set it up.

I worked with a girl with Tourette's once,

and she used to booze

to stop her tics and twitches.

So, she'd drink,

and her tics would mellow.

But she got into drinking more and more.

And after five-day benders,

she'd wake up covered in sick or blood,

often in a place

she didn't remember going to,

waking up next to someone

she had no recollection of meeting.

She was using alcohol to cope.

It's tough to keep that up.

It's tough doing anything when you've got

loads of f*cking mental thoughts

running through your head,

and you can't stop touching sh*t.

Can you tell me

about some of the compulsions?

[He chuckles]

Yeah. Um...

I dunno, like.

They change all the time, really. Um...

At the moment,

I sort of like to touch things.

Objects or people.

Um... I've got a pen...

I click at the moment.

Keep me having a good day.

I sort of, like, fight the urge

to put things in me mouth and swallow 'em.

f*ck knows.

Those are f*cking...

But this is just some stuff, really.

Um, I find it quite difficult

to explain everything.

[Janet] What do you mean?

[He exhales]

Well...

- It's okay.

- [Danny] Yeah.

Um...

Like, I get really disgusting thoughts

as well.

Like what?

[He exhales]

I hate thinking about this.

Go on.

Like, I worry

if there's a hammer in a room...

I'm gonna pick it up...

and hit someone with it.

Or, like,

if there's a knife sitting there,

I'll just pick it up and stab someone.

I worry that I'm gonna...

smash old people in the face

when I see 'em.

Or just throw meself in front of a car.

Or kick a f*cking dog to death.

Or, like, wank in public.

Or bite off me own tongue, eat a brick.

I dunno, glass people,

or put me elbow through someone's skull.

Or just walk on the stumps of me legs,

until orange sh*t just comes out.

I worry that I'll do

any number of f*cked-up things,

you know, like I'm just...

just a bad person, you know?

Better off gone.

[Janet] Some imaginative stuff, there.

I love the orange bit.

Cheers.

Listen, I don't think you're a bad person,

or better off gone.

Everyone has a variety of strange thoughts

running through their head every day.

It's normal. You said yourself

you think they're disgusting things.

Look how anxious and agitated you are

only talking about them.

So, if you wanted to punch

people's heads in, then you'd be doing it.

There are plenty of violent people

going around doing that already.

Even the thought of violence

gives you a panic attack.

You're so worried

about thinking terrible things

that you end up stressed-out.

The trick is that...

when these things pop into your mind,

to not give yourself a hard time, and to

accept these thoughts will bounce around.

Nothing's happened.

They're just a thought.

You've got an active mind.

You can use it.

It's not a bad thing, Danny.

[Hip-hop music plays, muffled]

- [Ruminative music]

- [Danny] I want to change.

I'm tired of the routine,

tired of being powerless

with no-one to talk to.

All the f*cking systems

I invent in me head, they lock me in.

I just spend time thinking and thinking,

and it doesn't do anything.

- I need something else.

- [Music fades]

Gotta make sure that's zipped-up.

Catch yourself a f*cking cold, there.

f*ck off, Danny!

What are you doing here again?

Your dealer?

Nah. Wanted to see you.

Oi, what? What's that?

What, you've come down

for a little natter, have ya?

I've been thinking about ya.

Honestly, right.

I thought about how fantastic

me and you have done

- these past 12 years.

- [Laura chuckles]

And I thought,

"You know what? f*ck it."

"Gonna go and see

my old school-mate, Laura."

- Why is it that you do that?

- What, that?

- Yeah, your little...

- Yeah, it's weird.

- Morse Code thing.

- It's weird, innit? I dunno.

Had to touch all the f*cking

car wing mirrors on the way up an'all.

- Did ya?

- Mm.

- Why?

- I dunno, man.

Like, I think it's so

it sort of goes well with you.

Don't give me that.

I'll tell you what. What about this?

What about if I'm the one that's evolving,

and all humans'll have to catch up,

be like me one day,

- and do all that to everyone.

- Yeah, or maybe...

- you're f*cking mental.

- [Danny] Maybe.

- Yeah.

- [Danny] Maybe that's the case.

- So, are you waiting on your dealer?

- [Danny] No.

- What?

- Why are you here, then?

Like I just said, I've come to see you.

- Get lost, Danny!

- Laura, listen, listen, listen.

Honestly, right?

Cut the bullshit, right?

I'm getting off the gear, yeah?

And you're the only person

that I've spoken to.

- Apart from me counsellor.

- [Laura scoffs]

- No, listen, listen, listen.

- [Laura] Lucky me.

[Danny] Right, I'm doing it anyway, right?

And I think you're nice.

So, I thought, if I come here...

come here, and I spent my money on you,

then I ain't gonna spend it on smack.

[Laura]

I'm your drugs program me, am I?

No, right.

You're helping a member of the community.

I don't know if you're worth helping.

[Danny] Really? Come on.

I was actually thinking,

do you remember that time at school

when you and I kissed down near the canal?

- [Danny] Yeah.

- All I remember is that you were shaking

the entire time.

- I remember. I remember it well.

- [Laura] Yeah.

Me f*cking hand was like that

with me can.

- Do you remember? Like a f*cking alky.

- [Both chuckle]

I used to fancy you, you know.

Big time.

- Did ya?

- Mm.

What?

[Laura] Just weird, innit?

- Seeing you again.

- [Danny] You're weird.

- I'm weird, but you're f*cking weird.

- [Danny chuckles]

- I don't have to touch car wing mirrors.

- That's very true.

Just another customer though, right?

- Mm.

- [Laura] Yeah?

Yeah.

Yeah, yeah.

[Laura] 35 quid.

[Rustling]

[Danny, softly] 35...

[Rustling]

- I've only got 30, you know.

- [Laura chuckles]

I'm not even lying. sh*t!

[Laura] You come down here

with your little speech prepared,

- and you've not even got the right money.

- [Danny] I'm so f*cking sorry.

How about... Listen, Laura,

I'll do an IOU, yeah? Listen.

[Train rattles]

[He exhales]

[Train recedes]

[Heavy breathing]

[Laura gasps softly]

[Danny grunts]

[Danny grunts]

[Danny breathes shakily]

- [Danny] When's the baby's due?

- Got another few months yet.

You looking forward to it?

Why do you still work?

I'm gonna stop soon.

- Glad I seen ya.

- Yeah.

You're one of the nice ones.

[Contemplative music]

[Laura] I've gotta go.

I need to go home.

[Danny] Can I see you in the day?

Nah, listen, I've told you what it is.

[Music continues]

[Siren wails in distance]

[Music continues]

[Music continues]

[Music fades;

Birdsong]

[Children play, yell in distance]

- [He exhales]

- f*cking hell.

[He urinates]

[Softly] Six... eight...

Stupid f*cking...

[Man] Oi! Oi, Sarah, come on!

Oi!

- Come on, stop pissing about.

- [Perspex rattles]

Come on.

Take the mick out of me.

- Taking the piss. Behave!

- [Sharp smack]

- [Girl] Ow!

- [Laura] Don't do that!

- Was there any need to do that?

- [Man] Yeah, there was need.

- She was pecking me head.

- [Laura] You all right, babe?

- You don't need to hit her like that.

- [Man] It's a little graze.

It just grazed off.

Crocodile tears, that is.

- [Danny] Oi, dickhead.

- [Blow thuds]

[Brick thuds, Laura yelps]

[Laura] Danny, get off him! Danny!

[He breathes shakily]

[Birdsong]

[Laura] You okay, babe?

Come on.

Stop getting me in trouble.

All you had to do was keep up.

- Dead simple, innit?

- [Laura] She didn't do nothing wrong.

[Man] Nope, you're still not playing.

[Ruminative music]

[Music continues]

[Music fades]

[Man] Right, I'm gonna sh**t with these.

See you in a bit.

Mwah!

- See you in a bit.

- Come on, you.

- Yes, lad, how you doing?

- Yes, boys.

- You all right, mate?

- Yeah, good. You?

How you doing, ladies? You good?

All right, Son.

- All right?

- Good.

- New car?

- Yeah, man, do you like it?

Could have cleaned it.

- It's a right filthy b*tch, in't she?

- In the back, let's roll.

- [Friend] You getting the pints in, yeah?

- [Man] I will do, yeah.

[Melancholy music]

- [Danny] Laura?

- [Music fades]

- Hang on, don't go...

- What you doing?!

[Danny] No, no, just wait, wait, wait.

Listen, you should be mad.

All right, I'm f*cking stupid, I know.

- I'm just doing this, yeah...

- How did you know I was here?

Laura, you're in me head.

I can't get you out.

- But how did you know I was here?

- I just wanted to see you again.

- How?

- Well...

I followed ya.

You don't do that, Danny,

that's f*cking nuts!

Well, what am I supposed to do?

I couldn't get you out of me head.

I couldn't just go home.

- What, you've been out all night?

- Mm.

- No...

- [Danny] What?

What? What?

- No!

- Just listen, listen, listen.

Listen, right? Okay, fine, fine.

I'm sorry, yeah? Okay, but...

And I tell you what,

he shouldn't hit the little one like that.

You think I'm mad?

Yeah, I saw that. That's f*cking mad.

Well, you shouldn't have followed me,

and you wouldn't have seen him do it,

would ya?

Look, I don't give a f*ck

about customers, Danny.

Yeah, but I'm your mate, though.

I'm not just a customer.

And, honestly, us meeting,

I think it was meant to happen.

Seriously. Listen, man,

I think you're brilliant, I do.

I do. I like ya.

- Is that okay?

- No, I can't handle this, Danny.

- Come on, man, I wanna see you again.

- Danny!

What? Come on. Come on.

- No!

- What's up with ya?

- No!

- Come on, what's up with ya?

Stop!

I've not having this.

No, I'm not having it.

- What's up with ya?

- Get off!

You're going on here.

Get on here now! Get on here now!

- Danny!

- Sit down, get on here!

You're f*cking nuts, you.

[Gentle music]

[Laura] I gotta go.

- What?

- Don't follow me again, yeah?

Sarah, get off that!

- Well...

- [Danny exhales]

[Danny] Can I come see ya?

Eh?

- Can I?

- [Laura] We'll see.

[Music continues]

[Children play nearby]

[Music fades]

What's the most important things

to remember

before you go for an interview?

Any ideas?

I'll help you.

It's cleanliness and presentation.

- That's you f*cked.

- Cleanliness and presentation.

- Simple, in't it?

- It is.

And that's right.

You can't go into an interview

- if you're looking scruffy or smelly.

- Oh, no.

[Woman] I mean, a managing director

is not gonna give you a job

if you go in

and you've got mucky fingernails

and you haven't sprayed under your armpits

with deodorant.

It's not funny. It might sound funny,

- but it's not fair on the interviewer.

- [Woman] No.

And it's not going to give you

a fair chance.

- [Woman] No.

- Wear trousers,

wear a shirt, wear a tie.

Even a jacket.

Shine your shoes, have a shower,

brush your teeth, brush your hair.

- Be smart.

- Mm-hm.

First impressions are key.

- [Woman] Key.

- [Woman 2] That's right.

We need a volunteer for the next bit.

Anybody?

Come on, lads, we don't bite!

- [Rowdy chatter]

- Yes, Gav!

Oh, well done! Well done.

[Rowdy laughter]

Go on, Gav, lad!

[Rob cackles]

Right, okay, so, um...

Let... Let's just imagine

you're smartly dressed, right?

- What's your name, love?

- Gavin.

Gavin. Okay, so, Gavin,

you're dressed smart, yeah?

Right, now,

what is the most important thing,

that first thing you do when you walk

in that room to meet the employer?

What do you do?

Say, "When's payday, dickhead?"

[Rowdy laughter]

Anybody else?

- Shake hands.

- Yes! Exactly right. Shake hands.

Now, what is the most important thing

about this handshake?

- Anyone?

- Good handshake's a firm handshake.

Great answer!

Yes, a firm handshake.

It has got to be firm.

Can't go in there like a wet fish.

If you go in there like a wet fish,

that says nothing about you.

You've got to show strength of character.

That's what we're talking about now.

Right, Gavin,

are we ready to give this a go?

- Yeah.

- Yeah? Smashing. So, just...

No, it's fine.

Just stand there for me, love.

That's great. Now, you're dressed smart.

Good lad.

Right, now, I'm your employer,

and you're gonna come into me.

Come into me. Come on, come on.

- Hi. You must be Gavin.

- Yes, I am. Pleased to meet you.

[Rowdy laughter]

You see, now, that? That was great!

That was a good, firm handshake, that.

That that was great work.

Well done. Thank you, Gavin.

- Yes! Masterclass!

- Thank you, Gavin, thank you.

[Applause subsides]

Right, now,

we're going to do some group work.

You're going to practice

what we've been doing here today.

Come on, come on.

- Think about your goals in life.

- Come on.

- Just come forward.

- Come on, lads.

You're our little star.

[Bustling chatter]

- You just wear your best jacket.

- ..absolutely fine with that.

[Mocking voice]

When you go for an interview,

make sure that you don't have

- any sh*t on your face.

- [Danny chuckles]

[Rob] Always clean the sh*t off.

It doesn't leave a very good first...

Anyone?

Impression.

- That's right!

- [Danny chuckles]

Are they for real, these two, or what?

- Mate, it's like listening to your gran.

- [Rob] Yeah.

I quite fancy her in yellow, me.

She's f*cking tidy, look at her.

She knows what she's doing. Saucy!

- Yeah, she's a bit of a belter, in't she?

- In't she? f*cking hell.

Off-the-shoulder, canary yellow.

- [Danny] She's keen as well, man.

- She is, man. You can tell.

Come down from the tree to Daddy.

[Rob whistles, Danny laughs]

I'm hoping her name's

something like, um, Muriel.

- [Rob] Muriel.

- Do you know what I mean?

Or Doris.

The name to guarantee a semi.

- Hundred percent.

- Doris, f*cking hell!

Look at Tony. f*cking look at him.

What a dickhead.

'Cause he f*cking

wears shoes with jeans, the twat.

Here, she's coming over.

She's coming over now.

- You're in, mate.

- [Danny] Nah, you're in.

Hello, you two. How are you doing?

Oh, mastered it.

It's a massive help, cheers.

Thank you so much. Yeah.

I just feel like you're really giving us

proper advice, you know.

I am actually,

I was just saying to Danny,

starting to feel

a bit better about meself.

- Mm.

- Oh! That's lovely to hear.

Thank you so much.

He was emotional.

- [Woman 2] Yeah. Good pal, in't he?

- Yeah, he's me mate.

- Yeah.

- Me pal, yeah.

[Woman 2]

Do you want to take your hat off?

No.

- But it's very warm.

- I know it's very warm,

but the hat stays on, I'm afraid.

Sorry.

- [Woman 2] Sure?

- The hat stays on. Yeah, very sure.

[Rob stifles laughter]

Mate, honestly...

if I take this off, right,

it'll send me f*cking under.

Right you are, Danny. Important hat, that.

Don't take any sh*t, right?

All right, everybody, if I could just

have your attention for a minute, please.

We're all going to take a short break,

and we're going to enjoy

some tea and cake!

So, if you want to come

and help yourselves,

- it's in the corner over there.

- [Bustling chatter]

We've got doughnuts, we've got muffins.

[Coins clack]

[Traffic hums;

Heavy breathing]

[Heavy breathing continues]

[Chatter in distance]

[Laura chuckles softly]

Who's looking after your daughter? Dad?

She's with my mum.

What's her name again?

- Sarah.

- Sarah.

Is that Sarah with a...

- S-A-R-A-H?

- How else is it spelled?

Well, it's S-A-R-A.

[Laura]

That's "Sah-rah." She's not his.

That's why he's a bit funny with her.

Mind you,

she's a bit funny with him an'all.

[Danny] Where's her real dad?

Dunno where he is. f*cked off.

Wouldn't let him near Sarah, anyway.

My dad left me, you know.

I kinda remember him.

Remember that he liked

throwing his weight around.

Found out that he died

the other year, right?

- [Laura] I'm sorry.

- Nah, it don't matter.

Honestly, I don't even know if the guy

had a funeral, do you know what I mean?

f*cking mental.

Sarah'll be okay.

You get on with it, don't ya?

- [Laura sniffles]

- What?

What?

- f*cking hell, are you all right?

- Yeah.

Oi, look at me.

- Was that what I just said then?

- No.

[Danny] Yes, it... f*ck, come here.

You all right? Hey.

[Wind howls]

What?

What you staring at?

Do you really wanna know?

Like, f*cking really?

Yeah.

Right then,

I thought I was gonna bite your lip off.

Like... Like, f*cking, like, really...

really f*cking hard, yer know?

Really hard,

till me teeth just went right through.

Well, do it, then.

What?

Do it.

- Go on.

- What do you mean, "do it"?

- Bite 'em off.

- I'm not gonna f*cking actually do it.

- Why not?

- Why the f*ck would I do it?

Go on, bite 'em and tear 'em.

Crunch 'em in your mouth,

and pop 'em in your mouth.

- What you f*cking on about, you?

- Go on.

- What?

- Do it!

You're f*cking strange, you.

[Gentle music]

Come here.

- [She chuckles softly]

- Come on, then.

[Music continues]

[Music fades]

- [Engine idles]

- All right, babe?

Don't worry, mate, I'm her fella.

- What's wrong?

- [Man] Yeah, nice to see you as well.

What's your name, mate?

What's your name?

- Hey, she's a good girl, in't she?

- [Laura] Gotta go. Bye.

[Car door shuts]

- You all right or what?

- Yeah, 'course I am.

Check your phone,

there must be a million missed calls.

Yeah, 'cause I've just been

with a customer,

and now you've just made him leave.

[Man] I don't care.

When you get one missed call,

it means I want to speak to ya.

Did he wear a Johnnie?

- Did he wear a Johnnie?

- Why have you come down?

Who are you talking to?

Look, you're too far gone for this, yeah?

It'll have to stop soon.

- Okay.

- [Man] Yeah?

Yeah.

Just get a bit more dough...

and then knock it the head.

[Melancholy music]

[Music fades]

[Knife scrapes]

[Scraping continues]

You all right, Gav?

- You want some?

- [Scraping continues]

It's a good one, that, mate.

Good f*cking move.

You what?

You know what.

I don't, mate.

That's my f*cking butter.

I paid for it.

Gav...

that's my butter, all right?

Oi, Gav, f*cking watch it, yeah?!

It's my f*cking butter, all right?!

It's my f*cking butter!

I went to the shop and bought it

with my own f*cking money,

you thieving little b*stard,

so I know it's mine!

[Knife scrapes]

- There's two butters.

- [Danny] Yeah.

That's what I'm saying, Gav.

And that one's mine.

Yeah.

You f*cking stupid...

daft, big f*cking f*ck.

[He inhales]

[Crockery clacks]

[He groans sharply]

[He chuckles]

Yesterday, I was worried

that I was gonna r*pe Karen.

Like, I was freaking out

that I might do it, you know?

- Could even be in the same room as her.

- So, what happened?

Well, I just had to... had to get away.

Um, but I just couldn't get it

out of me head.

And then, I was worried,

for some reason, that I'd already done it.

- Did you feel anxious?

- [Danny] Yeah, 'course I did, man.

She's there, she's trying to, like...

Well, she's pulled me for a one-for-one...

and she's going through

me job options and, you know,

futures, and stuff like that,

and I just...

I couldn't even think properly.

Like, I was shaking, man.

I just had to get away.

Right, well, this will feel odd, but I

don't want you to avoid those situations.

I don't want you to hide from them.

The stress of trying to get away

will make it worse.

We want this to be a breeze for you.

[Danny] Yeah, I know.

And I have, you know,

tried to do what you've told me to do.

You know,

think of them as thoughts, you know.

It didn't work.

So, you spend all your time

trying not to be in the same room as her?

Yeah.

Yeah, I know. f*cking nightmare.

Well, that's what I'm saying.

By putting all that effort

into avoiding her, the fear builds up.

And when you do end up in the same room,

your adrenaline'll be so high,

that it'll be even more scary for you.

You're in the situation

that you've been dreading.

- I want you to change that cycle.

- [Danny] Yeah.

I'm just worried if I stay there,

and she's there, she's looking at me,

she's just gonna see it

written all over me face.

Inside, you're in turmoil,

but outside, you probably look okay.

I've got an assignment for you

that I'd like you to try, all right?

So, what I would like you to do,

let's say three times a week,

to spend 20 minutes in a room with Karen.

And I want you to gauge your anxiety

during that time on a scale of one to ten.

Even write it down afterwards

in a little notebook.

And then,

I want you to report back to me,

and let's have a look at it

and see how it's gone.

So, you want me...

to spend 20 minutes

in a room with Karen...

three times a week...

and gauge my anxiety levels

between one and ten...

after I've just told you

that I was worried I was gonna r*pe her.

That's right.

And I think you can do it.

All right.

[Traffic hums]

[Lighter clicks]

What do you wanna be

when you grow up, ay?

A hooker.

Yeah.

- Don't think you'll ever make it.

- Ay!

If I work hard and practice,

you know, get up early and that...

I reckon I could do it.

Mm. Maybe.

Maybe.

You know,

I always wanted to be a singer in a band.

- Did ya?

- f*cking mad, that, innit?

Imagine that.

You know, like Radiohead or summat.

Can you sing?

- I... Yeah, I got a bit, I reckon.

- Go on.

I always thought that the lyrics were

more important than the voice, though,

'cause it is what you say

that counts, innit?

Are you saying that

'cause you sound like sh*t?

Right, f*cking hell,

what do you want me to sing?

Don't know. Make it up, lyric boy.

- Laura...

- [Laura chuckles]

I adore ya

Bought you some wine

But you're pregnant

So, I'll f*cking drink it for ya.

[Both chuckle]

- That were good, that.

- Mm.

I never knew

what I wanted to be, you know.

I knew I didn't wanna

be f*cking here, though.

I'd tell myself I was leaving. I'd say it

over and over again in my head, but...

Why? Why didn't ya... just leave?

Dunno.

Does, um...

your mum know... what you do?

I think she just blocks it out.

It was better when I worked in a parlour,

'cause it was warm, but...

- then Warren f*cked that up for me.

- Warren f*cked it up?

- Why? What'd he do?

- He's just greedy and kicked off.

[Laura winces]

Agh!

- What? What's up?

- [Laura winces]

The baby's just kicked me bare, you know.

[Danny] What? f*cking hell, Laura,

don't do this. What's up with ya?

- You all right?

- [Laura] Have a feel.

[Danny] Wha...

- I'm not feeling anything...

- Wait.

Oh, f*ck me! Yeah, sh*t!

Oh, my f*cking...

Let me feel that again.

f*cking hell, it's like Alien, that.

- Ah, it was bad, you know.

- What?

- Yeah, that hurt.

- What, worse than usual?

Is it meant to do that or not?

- Argh!

- Oh, f*cking hell, man!

- [Danny chuckles]

- f*ck's sake, you f*cking...

[Laura] Ah, the laughing hurt then.

I like you, you know.

Yeah, I know.

- What about you?

- [Laura chuckles]

Yeah, I like you, too.

Jesus, you're like

a little f*cking girl or something.

[Danny] Would you ever leave him?

Eh?

All right, all right, f*cking hell.

You know what?

Should actually probably lay off this.

Yeah, I'm gonna stop soon.

I wanna stop working as well.

You probably won't see me.

What?

- W-When?

- I dunno yet.

W-Well, it's my birthday tomorrow.

And...

I kinda wanted to see you.

Are you working tomorrow?

It's not your birthday tomorrow,

it's your birthday right now.

[Gentle music]

Happy birthday.

- Five pound. I'm joking!

- [Both chuckle]

Wah!

[Music fades]

[Jay] He's a dickhead.

He's a prick. I'm gonna bang him out.

- I'm gonna f*ck him up.

- You wanna take that down.

[Jay] Ooh-ooh-ooh-hoo! Yes!

Now we're talking!

That looks f*cking real.

It looks legit, that.

[Rob]

Well, let's see if it is f*cking real.

- Gav!

- Rob...

- What the f*ck is that?!

- [Rob] f*cking idiot.

- f*ck off.

- Get your f*cking shoes off.

Mate! Rob, mate, no!

Rob, what the f*ck are you doing?

- Rob, mate, stop it!

- [Rob] You better f*cking dance for me.

- Stop it now.

- [Rob] Oi, oi, oi. Oi, oi.

- Birthday bumps, innit?

- Whose birthday?

- What? No. Rob, man, no.

- [Rob] Birthday shots.

- Right up the arse!

- Are you f*cking joking?

It's your birthday!

Get your arse out.

- Are you joking?

- [Rob] Get your f*cking pants down.

Get over there,

get your f*cking pants down.

- One shot.

- Danny! One shot,

- right between the f*cking cheeks.

- [Jay] Get him in the knackers.

Right in the f*cking

rusty sheriff's badge.

- [Jay] Go, go, go.

- Get 'em down, get 'em down.

[Rowdy jeering]

Danny, wipe your arse, lad!

One... two...

- three.

- [g*n clicks, Danny yells]

- [Rowdy laughter]

- Oh, my God!

f*cking hell!

Oi! Are you all thick?!

Oi! Where've you got that?!

- It's not on. I'm calling the police.

- Calm down, it's a pellet g*n.

I know what it is.

I know what it bloody is!

Look, they can see, and they can see!

- A bleedin' pellet g*n!

- I'll take it in, then.

- No, you'll give it to me.

- No!

- Yes.

- No.

Rob, don't mess me about.

[Rob exhales]

It's Danny's birthday.

We're having a laugh.

You might want to try it, Karen.

I laugh when things are humorous.

And you, what are you doing, Danny?!

You were doing really well!

- Yeah, Danny.

- It's his go now, to be fair.

He just got shot in the arse.

Go on, let him have his go.

Right, that's it.

I want everyone inside.

Get up! Up! Get in!

Inside the house now!

- Now!

- Oh my God.

[Slot machine chimes]

- [Danny] Oi, what you got there, lad?

- This is my mate Mandy.

Cheeky dab.

- [Danny exhales]

- Rude not to.

How'd you like that, dirty little f*ck?

Oh, f*cking hell.

- [Rob] It's f*cking minging, innit?

- [Danny] Mm.

You're an 'orrible b*stard, you know that?

- Innit? Happy birthday, Danny boy.

- [Pulsing electronic music]

Thank you very much, sunshine.

- [Rob] Enjoy.

- [Danny] Mm-hm.

[Music continues;

Lively chatter]

[Rob] Oh, mate!

Imagine getting strapped into that.

- f*cking make you sick.

- [Danny] Here, they're where it's at.

A nice, like, chill one, mate,

is that all right?

Like, not too fast.

- Oi. Hey. Oi, oi.

- [Music builds]

He's gonna f*cking smash us now,

you know that, don't ya?

[Music intensifies, ride rattles]

[Danny, Rob yell]

They rinsed us!

- [Rob] What the f*ck are they?

- [Danny] Little goats or summat.

I want that.

Don't you f*cking want that?

- Argh! Cheeky little f*ck!

- [Danny laughs]

- Go on, Rob, you get the ones on the...

- All right, all right.

- Get the ones on the left.

- I'm on the left.

- Basically, Dylan has us come in...

- [Clerk] Mm.

has us play the games and that,

just to keep it busy,

and then, when we get the tickets,

we just bring it back,

and we get the money back, don't we?

- We need the money now, mate.

- [Clerk] Guys, I can't serve you.

Harvey, you need to...

Mate, this could have a serious impact

on your career prospects

moving forward, right?

[Music continues]

Orange is mine!

- Argh!

- [Rob chuckles]

- Oh, he's on us, he's on us!

- Oh, he's there!

- Argh!

- [Danny groans]

Go on, chase him.

He's getting away, man.

Ah, nowhere to go. Nowhere to hide.

[Music builds]

[Music intensifies]

[Both yell]

[Rob groans]

f*cking love you, lad.

Honestly, I'm having

the f*cking best day, I swear.

[Music continues]

[Music continues faintly, he groans]

[Danny] There's nowt left in that, anyway,

Rob, lad.

[He groans]

[Danny] Licking air.

[Packet rustles]

- [He groans]

- f*ck off.

- [Rob inhales]

- We should get some more.

It was a good f*cking night, that, mate.

Good night.

Mate, should we go upstairs

to Gavin's room?

- Why?

- sh*t in his bed.

f*cking hell.

- Oh, mate, I f*cking hate him.

- [Both chuckle]

- Same.

- [Both chuckle]

Oh, you know what, mate? f*ck me.

When I first came here, right,

I thought it was gonna be sh*t, you know.

But it's been all right,

I'm having a laugh...

- Yeah?

- ..so, yeah, just...

- thank you.

- No bother. No bother.

You're clearly

a man that's easily pleased.

And you're...

clearly a c**t.

- Easy, tiger!

- I just gone f*cking weird.

[Rob]

Karen's a laugh, though, in't she?

She reminds me of me ex-wife,

the way she gets wound-up.

- Do you miss her?

- Who, Karen?

Nah, your... ex-wife.

Yeah.

I was always getting f*cked-up,

and she couldn't hack it.

What, so... she just left?

- Yeah.

- Yeah.

f*cking hell, mate.

She had it right.

I wasn't bringing anything to the table.

You're a good lad.

Nah.

[Rob inhales]

There's more to it than that.

She was pregnant.

She was about six months into it.

She collapsed at work.

- Really bad, mate.

- f*cking hell, mate.

She had to go to hospital.

Surgery.

She survived...

and the baby died, we lost the baby.

And I was out, wasn't I?

Getting f*cked.

[Rob inhales]

- Anyway. Whatever, man. f*ck it.

- You're a good guy, mate.

- Yeah, it's all right, mate, innit?

- Seriously, you're a f*cking good guy.

It's all right, man. I don't give a f*ck.

It's all right, it's all right.

Wasn't expecting that, Rob.

f*ck me.

Have you got a bird?

Um...

Sort of, yeah.

Like...

Well, I like here.

She's not sure.

Should just look after her.

- Yeah.

- Be kind to her.

- Kind to her?

- That's all, innit?

- That's all it really is, innit?

- Yeah.

- [Rob inhales]

- Thanks, mate.

- It's all right.

- Kind to her.

[Rob sniffles]

[Rob inhales, groans]

- [Rob groans]

- [Danny] What you doing?

- 'Ere you go.

- [Danny] Rob... Lad...

Rob, f*cking hell, Rob.

What you doing?!

'Ere, get hold of these, man.

Get hold of these, f*cking double-quick.

- [Danny] No, mate!

- Take 'em down.

- Get rid of that.

- [Danny] Rob, stop it.

- 'Ave it!

- [Danny] Rob...

- Oh, you f*ck...

- Here, cop for that, cop for that.

[Danny] Are you f*cking joking me?

Oh, my f*cking God, lad.

[Rob wheezes, cackles]

- [Danny] You are...

- [Rob] f*cking stinks, this.

- f*cking daft as f*ck, mate.

- [Rob] Oh, it f*cking stinks!

Who does that?

f*ck!

This is a piss-take.

You two, get up.

Get up now! Danny, Rob, get up!

- [Danny groans]

- No way! You can just wake up!

- Oh, Karen, keep it down, man!

- Keep it down?!

- I will bloody keep you down.

- [Rob] All right, it's a bit much.

Look at the wall!

Danny, Rob, just look at the wall!

Do you think that that is acceptable?!

I'm gonna kick you out.

- You are both going.

- K-Karen...

g*ns and this... Shut up!

That's it, you've done it now.

If this is what you want, then fine.

Go and live like animals out there,

because that's how you behave.

All right, Karen, look, we was having

a laugh, and we took it too far, okay?

- Honestly, we didn't mean it.

- You've been here five minutes, Danny.

I have got to think about everybody.

All right, well, we're sorry.

- All right, Karen...

- No, no, no, no.

- We're sorry, all right?

- Karen, listen, yeah?

- [Karen] Go on.

- I did it. It's not his fault, all right?

- No, listen, Karen...

- Look at the whole room!

He's not gonna write

his own name on the wall.

- Rob, just pipe down, yeah?

- Why don't you pipe down?

And why are you dressed like a copper,

you f*cking dickhead?

- You're a secretary.

- [Karen] I want a meeting,

and you'll come and see me

in half an hour, all right?

Because I am not having this.

- Karen...

- Shut up!

- [Rob groans]

- f*ck...

[Tony] f*cking wankers.

It'll be all right, mate.

[Ruminative music]

Oh, mate...

[Music continues]

- Hiya, darling, you all right?

- Yeah.

No, no, look. Do you know Laura?

- Do you know where she is?

- I am Laura.

- Come on, man, she works 'round here.

- Nah.

- She's always here.

- Well, she's not here now, is she?

I'll give a hand job for a tenner.

Look, I ain't got a tenner, all right?

Have you seen her or not.

- Do you know what? Get f*cked.

- f*ck off!

[Music continues]

[Danny]I don't think I can be myself.

I can only be a twisted version.

People tell you to cope, accept it.

"We all go the same way.

Just swallow it."

Sometimes, I feel so desperate...

and on my own.

It's like my brain throbs.

I just wanna take it out of my head

and lay it in a pool of water.

A pool of ice-cold water.

That'd feel so good.

Someday, this life will end.

[Music continues]

[Music fades;

Birdsong]

[Engine starts]

[Van recedes]

[Intercom beeps]

[Woman, on intercom] Who is it?

[Danny] Laura? Is Laura there?

- [Woman] She's 65.

- [Danny] All right.

[Intercom beeps]

- [Laura] Hello?

- Laura.

It's me. Danny.

- Can I come up?

- [Laura] No. Go away.

[Danny] Laura, come on, man!

Just let me in.

Laura!

Laura!

- [Laura] Danny, stop it.

- Do you hear that?

Yeah? Come on. Just let me in, man.

Laura!

Lau...

ra!

I can do this all day, Laura.

[Sustained beep]

[Beep stops]

[TV on]

What?

What's up with ya?

- [Softly] Can I have some juice?

- [Laura] Yeah.

- Hey.

- Hi.

- Do you want a drink?

- Oh, yeah, ta.

[Cupboard door clacks]

[Tap off]

[Laura chuckles softly]

Proper pair of nutters, you two.

- Ta.

- Do you wanna be like him, do ya?

Go and watch TV, babe.

You can't come up here again.

What if she says summat to him?

- You just disappeared.

- I told you, I'm not working any more.

You didn't tell me when.

Danny, I f*cking told you

what was happening.

You like me. I know you do.

And I need you, man,

and I reckon you need me. Laura.

- You're a proper loon.

- I've stopped using.

- Proper sorted meself out, man.

- What does that matter?

[Danny exhales]

Come on, man, you like me.

I know you do.

I'm f*cking pregnant!

- And I'll treat you better than he will.

- What, a cosy life, is it?

What, you go to work, and I'll be here,

making you brews

and making your dinner for ya?

You come home, and we'll all watch TV

like happy families.

What's wrong with that?

Sounds good, that.

Tell you what I wouldn't do,

I wouldn't f*cking pimp you out.

[Laura] Right, well, you wouldn't

have met me again, then, would ya?

Laura, just chill. Listen.

You know I think you're top.

I'm sorry.

You know I think you're top.

- Eh?

- [Laura exhales]

Come on.

[Both chuckle softly]

- Come on.

- f*ck, he's here.

- Danny, go! Danny, you need to go.

- Nah, man. Nah, I don't care.

- Danny, get out!

- No, I'm staying.

- Danny, I'm serious, you need to...

- Let him see me.

- Get out! Get out!

- Nah. No.

Right, write your number down,

and I'll go.

- [Laura] What?

- Write your number down, and I'll go.

[Paper thuds]

[Uneasy music]

[Laura] Right, get out!

[Music continues]

[He sniffs, exhales]

You all right, babe? In here.

[Lift] Doors are opening.

[Music continues]

[Door creaks]

[Door shuts, music fades]

- You all right?

- You all right, babe?

Yeah.

- You all right?

- Yeah.

- [Warren] You having that?

- Nah, you have it.

What's she doing?

Dunno. She's been weird all day.

f*cking pack it in.

Oi, pack it in.

Stop doing that.

You'll get her took off ya,

doing stuff like that.

[Glass clacks]

[Objects clack]

He might not be as bad

as she's telling you.

- Well, he's a pimp.

- [Janet] What?

Well, that's what I mean.

He was pimping her out, like.

She was working when I met her, right?

- So, she went to me school.

- She's a prost*tute?

Well, yeah, Janet, just...

like, hear me out, yeah?

So, she's getting out the game

'cause she's pregnant, yeah?

So, she's fine on all that stance,

and I honestly think

that we're right for each other.

Think about whether this is

the best situation for you.

Think about

how that is going to work for you.

You need to give yourself

the best possible options.

- What you on about?

- [Janet] Well, think things through.

You need to think of you.

You getting better.You feeling secure.

- You, Danny.

- Right.

[Janet] Just being honest with you.

I'm gonna wear all red,

gonna paint me face red.

- I'm gonna have a big f*ck-off red sword.

- Right.

Sounds proper romantic, that does.

Sounds like absolute f*cking nonsense.

You can't get in the way

of what we've got, mate.

- [Emma] No.

- Connection.

Yeah.

- f*ck me.

- Hey, Woz!

Woz!

- You all right, mate?

- [Warren] Yes, Rob. You all right?

- Yeah. What you up to?

- Trying to win on these f*ck, mate.

- Ah, it's a mug's game, innit?

- Won four quid.

- How many have you bought?

- That doesn't matter, mate.

- You all right?

- [Rob] I'm all right, mate, yeah.

I know you, don't I?

Yeah, I recognise your face.

Um...

I dunno,

I live in the same house as Rob, but...

Yeah.

Ah, maybe it's just

knocking about with this f*ck,

but I do recognise ya.

Yeah, we get it. You know him.

Where you going?

Paul's gaff.

Bit of a session, if you're up for it?

- Yeah.

- Yeah?

Sound. Yous can come as well,

if you want.

Y'up for it?

Eh...

I said I'd chill with me sister, mate,

to be fair, so...

Come on, we was gonna go to boozer,

weren't we?

Yeah, but it's... I dunno.

All right, suit yourself.

I'll see you back there.

- Think red, you.

- Thinking red, yeah.

- Listen, um...

- Mm-hm.

me dad's not mad any more.

You can come 'round for half an hour,

if you wanted.

[Danny] What?

Nah, not now, man. Not now.

I'll catch up with him soon, though.

- Why don't you just come 'round now?

- Nah. Next week, yeah? Promise.

- It's convenient. You can just chill...

- Oh, God, Emma, do you know what, man?

I don't know why, but, fricking hell,

me head's just starting pounding,

you know.

I'm starting to feel ill

in me stomach as well.

Oh, my God, do you know what?

I'm sorry, Emma,

I might have to sh**t off.

Right.

[Danny] What?

- I'm telling the the truth, man.

- You're not going over there with your...

- with your mates, are ya?

- No. What do you mean? Go with them?

They've just gone down that road there.

I'm... I'm jibbing left, but I'm sorry,

I am gonna have to go back.

If you're getting off, just get off now.

Look, I'm sorry. Look, look look, look.

I'm sorry, all right? I am.

- Just happens every time, innit?

- I just feel f*cked, all right.

I can't help how I feel.

Come here.

- You be all right getting back?

- Yeah.

All right.

- I'll get in touch, yeah?

- Love ya.

Yeah, yeah. You, too, man.

Take care, yeah?

[Distorted thrum]

[Thrum stops]

[Distorted thrum]

[Thrum stops, handle clanks, he groans]

[Laura] You having fun?

- Where's Sarah?

- [Laura] With my mum.

You know, I think about you

at least once every minute... every day.

Who gives a f*ck?

[Danny] Reckon anyone's ever

thought about you that much?

No. And they shouldn't.

Don't say that.

Why have you picked here?

[Danny] Near to yours.

It's sh*t 'round here.

I f*cking hate looking at this place.

What are you gonna do, then?

[Laura] What you on about?

Well, me and you,

we could get away from here, couldn't we?

Like you wished for.

Do you know what I mean?

We could both just go.

Seen him today.

- [Laura] Eh?

- Your boyfriend. Warren.

He was near mine.

Lad from me house knows him.

You know, he recognised me.

What, did he kick off?

I couldn't figure it out.

I can't keep doing this, Danny.

[She exhales]

I love you.

You know that, don't ya?

It's not gonna happen.

You not hear what I just said?

I'm sorry.

I can't see it.

It's not what I want.

Warren probably thinks

there's something going on now.

- What?

- Between me and you,

he probably thinks

there's something going on.

What the f*ck does Warren care?!

- He f*cking wh*res you out!

- Don't say that!

Is that what you like, is it?

You like getting roughed-up

and just left on the streets every night?

You're no better than me.

Look, I'm glad I've seen you again...

and I'm glad you are who you are

and that you care, but...

this isn't happening.

[Danny] Laura, man, please.

I can't just stop how I feel.

- Well, that's how it is.

- You know I can't.

Come on, man.

Please, you're making a mistake.

- You know we'd be good together.

- I'm sorry.

- Please, please.

- I'm sorry.

[Gentle music]

Don't come near me again.

That's it, Danny.

[Music continues]

[Disquieting music]

[He breathes shakily]

[Music continues]

[Music builds]

[Intense music;

Alarm blares]

[Music softens, alarm continues]

[Contemplative music;

Alarm continues]

[Alarm continues, he sobs]

Ah, come on.

f*ck. sh*t.

Come on, come on.

[Alarm continues]

[He roars furiously]

[He winces]

[Danny strains, grunts]

- [John] Emma, call the police!

- [Danny roars, grunts]

[Alarm continues]

[Danny strains, sobs]

- [Alarm continues]

- [John] Emma, phone the police!

[He strains, grunts]

[Alarm continues]

[Mother] Daniel...

Daniel, let go, Son. Let go!

John, just let him go.

[Music fades, alarm continues]

[Emma] Danny?

You b*stard, Danny!

You're no son of mine!

Get in! Get in!

[Alarm continues]

[Traffic hums]

[He breathes shakily]

[Ruminative music]

[He breathes shakily]

[He breathes shakily]

[Music continues]

I can't get out.

That's it.

Everything's just the same.

All of it.

Doesn't change.

I used to worry all the time...

about getting things right.

I used to worry all the time...

about if I'm gonna die.

And now...

I actually wanna die.

Like, I just can't get... anything right.

[Janet] Is this to do with

the girl you told me about?

It's just everything.

You've done so well.

This is just a blip.

- Don't let it go to waste.

- I'm using again.

- [Janet] Then you'll stop again.

- I'll stop again?

Are you sure?

[He scoffs]

What am I f*cking doing here?

Seriously, what am I

actually f*cking doing here?

As if this is gonna f*cking help me.

f*ck me!

[Janet] Just sit down,

and we can talk more.

- Yeah, 'course.

- Danny, don't give up!

- [Music fades]

- Oh, f*ck!

[Band plays "The House of the Rising Sun"]

[Lively chatter]

There is a house

In New Orleans

They call the Rising Sun

And it's been the ruin

Of many a poor boy

And, God, I know I'm one...

- [Rob] f*cking pack that in.

- [Danny] What you doing?

[Rob] Do you want a shot, you?

- [Danny exhales]

- Yeah.

- Danny.

- What?

- Pack that in.

- All right.

She sewed my new blue jeans

My father was

- A gamblin' man...

- [Warren] Oi, oi!

Oi, oi! What's up, Woz?

Yeah, good, man. Yeah, sound.

f*ck me, here's a fella

who'll sway me down.

- All right?

- Yeah, good, good, good. Yeah, man.

- [Indistinct conversation]

- The only thing...

- D'yous want a drink?

- Yeah.

A gambler needs

Is a suitcase

And a g*n...

- You remember Danny, don't yer?

- Yes.

- How are you, pal? Yeah, you good?

- [Danny] All right.

- Uh, Steve, Andy.

- How you doing, mate? You all right?

Saw you sister the other day,

by the chippy.

Want one of these?

Eh?

[Danny inhales]

[He inhales]

I hate that drippy bit

in the back of your throat, you know.

Yeah, I don't mind it, me.

I remember how I know you.

- [Danny] What?

- I remember. I know why.

Right.

You know what I'm talking about,

don't ya?

- Yeah.

- [Warren] Yeah.

Do us a favour. Don't say anything

to these lot about what she does, yeah?

You've not told him, have ya?

- Nah.

- [Danny] Right.

She's not doing it any more.

She's having me kid.

- [Danny] Is she?

- Yeah, yeah.

- Oh, right.

- [Warren] Mm-hm. Yeah.

I don't know what I was doing,

letting her work on the f*cking streets.

She used to work in a parlour, but they

were just taking the piss out of her.

Just trying to earn a bit of extra dough,

do you know what I mean?

- Without getting stung.

- Yeah.

[Rob] Here, what are you two lovebirds

talking about?

The size of your mum's t*ts.

[Warren laughs]

- [Rob] They're f*cking massive.

- f*cking beautiful.

Here, get on this, right?

Get on this, right?

What would you rather do?

Lick your mam out

while your dad wanks himself off,

or, wait for it...

suck your dad's c*ck

whilst your mam eats your sh*t-box out?

- You dirty...

- [Rob] Eh! You gotta choose, right?

g*n to the head,

or your f*cking parents get ex*cuted.

- g*n to the head.

- Uh...

Lick me mam's p*ssy.

- Deffo, deffo. Gotta be.

- All f*cking day.

[Laughter]

- f*cking hell!

- f*cking deffo!

[Rowdy laughter]

- What made you come up with that?

- [Rob] Dunno, mate.

That's a belter, that.

[Rob] Just making me

think about me mam's t*ts.

[Warren]

I think we're all thinking of 'em.

[Music continues]

- [Music speeds up]

- There is a house

In New Orleans

They call the Rising Sun

And it's been the ruin

Of many a poor boy

And, God, I know I'm one

My mother

Was a tailor

She sewed my new blue jeans

My father was

A gamblin' man

Way down in New Orleans

Now, the only thing

A gambler needs

Is a suitcase

And a g*n

And the only time

That he's satisfied

Is when he's on a drug

I got one foot on the platform

I got one foot on the train

I'm going back

To New Orleans

To wear that ball and chain

So, mothers

Tell your children

Not to do

As I have done...

[Music continues, muffled]

[Dryer clatters]

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!

What'd you do that for?!

It's all f*cking shite, innit, eh?

My bird. The one you paid, yeah?

Did you know she was pregnant

when you was doing her.

- No.

- Yes, you did.

You must of! Don't laugh at me.

You laughing at me?

- No, I'm...

- Don't laugh at me. Don't laugh at me.

You must've saw the bump.

- You must've saw it.

- Listen, why'd you let her out there?

Eh?

Why'd you let her do it, like?

You could have just stopped that, yeah,

and got money some other ways.

Dunno.

Look, she's been doing it

for a while, yeah?

- She did it before I knew her.

- [Danny] I...

Look, don't...

don't say anything about...

Just don't say anything.

Don't whisper to anyone

about anything, yeah?

- Yeah.

- Just keep it between me and you.

[Song concludes;

Applause]

[Strident guitar squall]

Thank you!

[Squall continues]

Yes!

[Bustling chatter]

The same pub.

They play here every week.

Well, if they get

the place rocking, why not?

[Chatter continues]

[Warren]

Do one. Back to mine, yeah?

- Going back to Warren's. You coming?

- What?

- What, with...?

- Yeah.

- Yeah, he'll be there. See you in a bit.

- Yeah, maybe, man.

- Yeah?

- Yeah.

[Woman] Are we going outside for a f*g?

Come on.

- Come on, then.

- Eh, 20 quid.

Got a load of this.

Come back to mine.

- I'm a bit f*cked...

- Don't be at it, mate.

I've been dishing it out all night.

Listen. Eh, listen, listen.

- Sorry about that in there. I was a c**t.

- Yeah, mate, it's not about that.

It is for me.

- I'm f*cked.

- I'm f*cked. That was the Es, man.

I get dead paranoid, I snap up.

I shouldn't do it, you know what I mean?

I've got a lot going on.

She's left,

gone to her mum's for the night, so...

Come back, man. We'll have

a bit of a party, it'll be sweet.

- You're coming back.

- Oh, fu...

- Alright, yeah.

- You're coming back, yeah? Sound.

Right, listen.

Taxi's here, let's go, come on.

[Rowdy chatter]

All night, mate. All f*cking night!

See you in a bit, guys. Come on.

- Come on.

- Come on, let's go back.

[Muffled electronic music]

[Music continues;

Lively chatter]

- [Rob] I anoint you...

- [Woman chuckles]

in the name of the Father, the Son...

Stick your tongue out.

And the Holy Ghost.

[Man] Don't be a d*ck, mate.

Come on, give us a line of that.

[Man 2] You already owe me 40 f*cking quid

from last month, all right?

- [Man] Ah, f*ck off... c**t.

- [Man 2] Yeah, whatever.

- You need to watch yourself, fella.

- [Man 2] What you going to do, buddy?

[Woman 2] That's a f*cking gram, that,

don't let him do that.

Go on, then, fella.

Go on, little man. Go on!

Get the f*ck out, ya prick!

- [Woman 2] Is he all right?

- f*ck him. C'mon.

[Music continues]

[Danny]

That f*cking bear looks in a bad way.

- [Warren chuckles]

- Are you all right, mate?

[Warren groans, exhales]

- Slumped.

- Yeah.

[Warren snorts]

Listen, I'm, uh...

I'm sorry about before.

- I just get all wound-up.

- Don't worry about it, mate.

- Nah, I shouldn't have done it.

- It's all right, but.

- Yeah.

- Yeah, sweet.

The f*cking truth is,

me and Laura had a f*cking bust-up.

- Yeah?

- Yeah.

[Warren sniffs]

- What was you fighting about?

- [Warren exhales]

f*cking... You tell me.

She's f*cking just went off.

She's just always snapping lately.

Just f*cking snapping.

[Warren sniffs]

- Mm.

- Yeah.

[Warren sniffs]

- You want another pill?

- [Pills rattle]

- You sure?

- Yeah.

- Sure?

- Yeah. 'Course, mate, yeah.

[Warren sniffs]

[Warren exhales]

- [Warren chuckles]

- I am f*cked.

[Warren sniffs, exhales]

[Danny gulps, sniffs]

I'm gonna go get another drink, mate.

- Do you want one?

- Nah, I'm sound, mate, thanks.

- Should I get him one?

- Yeah, yeah.

- Yeah, get him...

- Hairy f*ck.

[Music continues]

- Nice one, mate.

- Yeah.

[Danny exhales]

What was it you was doing in the kitchen,

with your foot,

touching the tiles like that?

Mate, I just get the urge

to just do weird sh*t sometimes, man.

Yeah.

Unusual, that, though, innit?

- [Danny chuckles]

- Yeah.

You ever seen anyone else do it, or...?

I ain't seen anyone else

do sh*t like that, mate.

- Just me, that.

- Just you, yeah.

[Warren sniffs, groans]

Eh, listen, uh...

You know, I was saying before...

I'm all right about what happened

between you and Laura, because...

I mean, you didn't know, did you?

- You know, she...

- [Warren inhales]

You pay, she's a f*cking hooker, and...

It's not your fault, is it?

- Mm.

- Yeah.

Do you, uh...

you know...

you talk much? You get on?

Because she's a f*cking

cracking girl, in't she?

- Yeah, man. Yeah, top.

- Mm.

Mm.

- Talks too much.

- [Danny chuckles]

[Danny] Yeah.

Yeah, f*cking hell, mate.

- She used to chat sh*t in school.

- Yeah.

Used to, like, give the teachers,

like, proper grief.

Yeah, that sounds like Laura, that.

[Danny chuckles]

Nah, she, um...

she's a good... good mate.

Good mate.

Suppose it helps, don't it?

Being mates...

when you do something like that.

Mm.

- Yeah.

- Yeah.

[Music continues]

I just...

just want to say thanks for not...

you know,

saying anything to them lot in there...

about what she does.

[Paper rustles]

Yeah.

Let's have some ket.

- Is that mine?

- Yeah, of course, mate, yeah.

- You sure?

- All yours, mate.

Just gonna go and get

some more skins for mine.

- Mm.

- Yeah.

[Warren inhales]

Oh, f*ck...

[Music continues]

[Music continues;

Indistinct conversation]

How you doing? You all right, man?

You look f*cking smashed, you two.

You been behaving?

[Music, chatter continue]

[Disorienting music]

[Indistinct voices swirl, reverberate]

[Man] Made from f*cking chinchillas, that.

[Man 2] Is it?

[Man chuckles]

He's on the f*ck in moon, man, in't he?

[Music continues;

Indistinct chatter]

Hello-oh?

[Mocking laughter]

f*cking hell, he's a right.

He's a good laugh, him, in't he?

I blew everyone off in school,

that's a sport, innit?

- That's dirty!

- That's a sport.

- Why were you blowing everyone off?

- It's a sport!

- It's not a sport.

- It is!

[Man 3] They're gonna take over the world

Watch the YouTube thing about it, mate.

It's dead-cert, mate.

Hundred percent, man.

- [Man 4] Like, proper true?

- [Man 3] Proper f*cking true.

Me and you'll be long gone. The robots,

they'll be here for f*cking ever.

- Nah, man.

- Millions and billions of years.

[Pounding club music plays]

- [Music stops]

- Do you want me to take him back with me?

Nah, leave him, mate. He's f*cking sound.

I'll get him on the couch.

- [Rob] Yeah?

- Yeah, he's all right. He's f*cked.

- [Rob] Just f*cking kick him out.

- [Warren] Nah, I'll look after him, mate.

See you later, Danny boy.

Go on. See you, love.

Shut the door.

[Door opens]

[Door shuts]

[He breathes shakily]

[Warren grunts, clears throat]

[Warren exhales]

- [Kick thuds]

- Oi, Danny.

Danny.

- [Smack thuds]

- Oi, can you hear me?

- [Danny mutters groggily]

- Hey, can you hear me?

You went to school with Laura, did ya?

- Yeah.

- Yeah.

Do you like her?

- Gorgeous, in't she?

- Mm.

That why you wanted to f*ck her? Eh?

[Danny chuckles weakly]

Go on, mate, you laugh.

- I like her.

- You like her?

How many times have you shagged her?

- [Danny] Lots.

- Lots.

Is that why you came here...

to my flat?

Teaching Sarah

your little f*cking weird moves.

You don't treat her right.

I don't... Say it again.

- You don't treat her right.

- I don't treat her right?

Thanks, mate.

Did you always pay?

Eh?

- Oi.

- [Groggily] Don't do that.

- Did you always pay to f*ck my bird?

- I wanna go...

No, no, no, no.

- I want to leave.

- Nah, you're going nowhere.

Did you f*ck her in this flat?

In my flat?

Did you f*ck her on that couch?

I bet you did, because it's cosy, innit?

It's warm.

Do you love her?

Do you love her?

Yeah?

You f*cking love her, yeah?

Yeah, here you are.

Here... have some of this.

- [Danny groans, muffled]

- [Warren] Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh.

No, no, no, no. Take it, take it.

Shh, shh.

- [Danny gulps, gags]

- [Warren] Shh, shh, shh.

[Warren breathes heavily]

[He exhales]

[Warren exhales]

[Traffic hums]

[Latch clack, door creaks]

[Door shuts]

Yeah, me mate stayed over last night.

He's a bit out of it, is that all right?

We had a bit of a party last night,

Sarah, love.

Just got a bit out of hand.

Have you seen Danny before?

- Go in the bedroom, love.

- Have you seen him before?

- Is he Mummy's friend?

- Go in the bedroom, love. Go on.

Yeah, go on, f*ck off, you.

So, who's he, then, eh?

You haven't asked about him yet, have you?

- You've done him, haven't you?

- I don't know what you're talking about.

[Warren] You do know

what I'm f*cking talking about.

You f*cking done him here

and not out there.

He's a customer.

You've seen him yourself.

Don't you f*cking lie to me.

Don't f*cking lie!

Because you went to school with him...

- So?

Don't f*cking bullshit me!

- Please, please...

Taking the f*cking piss outta me, eh?!

It's f*cking your fault, all this!

[Sombre music;

He breathes shakily]

- [He groans]

- It's f*cking your fault!

[Tense, panicked breathing]

[Sobbing] No.

[Tense, panicked breathing;

Music fades]

Do something with me!

Oi! Please, help me!

Do summat! Listen, help me!

[Tense, panicked breathing]

[Music re-emerges]

[Warren] Yeah, hello? Yeah...

Yeah, I'd like an ambulance, please.

Yeah, my girlfriend, she just fell over,

and she's badly done-in, yeah.

She's pregnant.

Yeah, uh, 65...

65 Welbeck House.

M40...

6AU, yeah.

No, I'm gonna be here.

Yeah, I'll be here, yeah.

[Music continues, Warren sobs]

[He breathes heavily]

[He sobs]

Oh, God...

I'm... I'm so sorry.

I'm so... sorry.

[Music builds]

[He grunts furiously, door shuts]

[He strains]

[He winces, groans]

[He strains]

[He grunts, can clacks]

[He strains]

Laura? Laura...

Laura, listen to...

Oh, f*ck.

[Danny gasps, sobs]

Oh, sh*t! sh*t.

Laura, can you hear me?

- [Music continues]

- Mum?

[Danny, softly] Hi, Sarah.

Mummy, you're gonna be okay.

[Danny] Yes. Hey, hey...

Hey, Sarah.

Sarah, look at me, look at me.

[Music continues, siren wails]

[Siren off]

- [Medic] Hi. What's this lady's name?

- [Danny] Eh... Laura.

[Medic] Can I just get in there?

Laura, can you hear me?

- [Danny] Is she gonna be all right?

- We're looking after her.

[Danny]

She's gonna be all right, yeah?

Laura, it's the ambulance.

Can you hear me?

Laura, it's the ambulance.

- It's the ambulance, love...

- My baby.

I know. Laura, it's the ambulance.

Let us help you.

Laura, look, I'm sorry, babe.

I'm so, so sorry.

- Hey. No, no no no. Laura, I'm here.

- [Medic] Laura, try calm yourself down.

- Get off me. Get off... Get off me!

- [Danny] It's me and you!

- Get off...

- It's me and you!

- [Medic] Just leave her.

Laura, it's the ambulance.

We're here to look after you, okay?

It's the ambulance.

We're gonna take you to the hospital,

to look after you and your baby.

- Okay?

- Is it gonna be okay?

[Medic] Just calm yourself down.

We'll look after you.

- Look after you and your baby.

- [Laura sobs, breathes shakily]

[Medic]

Laura, tell us what's happened.

[Shaky breathing continues]

[Laura] I fell.

[Medic] Okay, so,

we'll take you to the hospital now.

Okay? Okay.

Shall we get you a chair?

Let's get you to the ambulance.

[Music continues]

- [Medic] Bit of a bump.

- [Gurney clacks]

[Music continues]

[Music continues]

[Danny] The messages

are all there around you.

But you choose to make sense of them

how you see fit.

If it feels right, then you go for it.

You know,

you don't care if it'll work out.

Suppose we're all junkies in that way.

Laura's baby survived.

Resilient f*ck.

I heard Warren went missing.

I wanted to see Laura again,

but I just couldn't do it to her.

And it was never gonna happen.

I know that now.

My f*cking mind always... pushes me.

You know, the thought,

the obsessions, the drugs.

It's just part of me.

I do have me good days.

I suppose we are all resilient f*ck.

I wish it had worked with Laura.

I wish she was happy.

I wish we'd have been happy.

I think we could have been.

I still imagine us...

together.

Maybe she's waiting for Warren,

to forgive him and be a family.

Or not.

Who knows?

It's hard to make the world fit

for everyone.

You know, you don't just slot in

or get a perfect fit.

You squeeze in, don't you?

It's uncomfortable,

and you do what you can.

Well, this is my place.

- Right here.

- [Music fades]

Bit by bit.

Day by day.

[Ruminative music]
