a super snow moon storm.

This is some of the worst seas
that we've seen this season.

Yeah. That's right.

Full moon's not good.

Man: It'll be an icy hell.

You feel like you're on
the shackleton expedition.

There's a learning curve
with this,

And there's muscle groups that
you're gonna have to build.

♪♪

[ grunts ] man: Oh! Maria down!

There's things that you don't
necessarily have control over.

I just want to make it
through the night.

Ninety-nine percent of this job
is honestly mental,

Never quitting no matter what.

for lack of a better word.

Narrator: Eight weeks into
the opilio season...

Supermoon ice storm!

Super snow moon storm
is upon us.

Narrator: ...After 72 hours
of its fierce tides

Wreaking havoc, the supermoon
finally reaches perigee,

The closest point in orbit
to earth.

Man, this thing is the biggest
it's been in 10 years.

It's a huge moon.

Narrator: The heightened
gravitational pull

Fuels the storm below
with warm southerly currents

And superchilled air
from the north.

Holy smokes. This ice, man.

With the supermoon freeze
comes hypothermic winds,

Gear-eating ice floes,
freezing fog and spray...

You know, we've had a sinking
out here just recently

In probably the very conditions

That we're experiencing
right now.

Narrator: ...All on a collision
course with the fleet.

Four hundred ninety miles
northwest of dutch harbor,

On the cornelia marie...

Maria: Right now,
the waves are pretty gnarly.

Every once in a while,

We'll get slapped in the face
with a good one.

♪♪

We're gonna sit right here

'cause I think there's crab
here.

Tides coming from here,
southeast.

So hopefully I ran
far enough ahead

So when we set the gear back
out, we're in front of the crab.

'cause they're moving.

Narrator: After an onslaught
of rogue waves in the north,

Captains josh harris
and casey mcmanus

Stake their gear
on the southern grounds,

Hoping the crab are caught in
the storm's powerful currents.

Josh: We'll find out
whether it works or not.

But the theory behind it
is good.

Casey: Oh, I theoried
the [bleep] out of it.

[ chuckles ]

If it makes sense,
it makes dollars.

We don't want to see our money
go up in smoke.

With a mounting $50,000 tab
for breakdowns this year,

The skippers need to fill
the boat just to break even...

An extra day or two is an extra
$10,000 in fuel,

$5,000 in bait.

Narrator:
...Or go deeper in debt.

We'll see.

I'm ready to start setting.

Hopefully I don't screw this up.

[ alarm beeping ]
now we've got a problem.

[ indistinct shouting ]

Maria went to go throw
the bags over

And didn't quite put oomph
on them,

And it got ahold
of the throwing hook.

Oh. Sorry, deej.

[bleep]

Aah! [bleep] aah!

Casey:
You've got to be [bleep] me.

Narrator:
Battling -20-degree winds,

Greenhorn maria dosel
fails to clear the rail

With the buoy line,
snagging the throwing hook,

Dragging it into the sea.

Casey: Damn it, maria.

You got to really
get them out there.

You got to work on your timing
or something.

But you got to get that
[bleep]damn thing cleared.

Maria: Sorry, guys!

My bad!

She needs to understand how much
effort needs to go into that.

Narrator:
Maria's throw costs the captains

Their $75 throwing hook.

But another mistake like that
could risk tangling the line

In the propeller,
jeopardizing their pots

Or even a $100,000 engine.

Maria: My shot-throwing
experience was an epic fail.

There's a lot of room
for improvement there.

Looks like wyatt's got
the diver now.

Two people to throw bags.

Never seen this before.
This is cute.

Yeah. But it takes time.

It's not easy
to acclimate immediately

When you get out here
to subzero temperatures.

She's hanging with the boys.

Casey: That being said,

This is heavy-duty work
out here.

It's time to kick her up
a notch.

Narrator: Sixty miles northwest,
on the wizard...

Yeah, this is pretty gnarly
out here right now.

Never seen ice fog like this.

Monte:
I just talked to my brother.

Kind of nervous
and uncomfortable.

This icing scenario
really needs to subside.

Narrator: Unleashed
by the supermoon currents,

An inbound ice pack
forces captain monte colburn

To retreat south.

Monte: The ocean is,
even at its low temperature,

So much warmer
than the air temperature

That the ocean is steaming.

That's what creates the ice fog.

Quite frankly,
we're getting pretty coated.

I know where the gear
actually belongs, but...

Narrator:
Despite the crew's efforts,

The ice fog adds over
2,500 pounds of frozen water

To the wizard every 10 minutes,

Threatening the stability
of the vessel.

Monte: Usually, you spot-check

And you set your load
on the best side that you have.

We really don't have
that option.

[ exhales deeply ]
it's just... it is what it is.

Let's just get them in the water
and see what we can find.

All right. Are we ready?

Man: Roger! Going over!

Narrator: To lighten the load,

Monte makes an emergency set

Before the ice can capsize
the vessel.

Man: Try it!

Okay! I wasn't sure!

Icing up, level 10.

Trying to...
Got to get all these set!

Man: What the [bleep] was that?

Whoa! Whoa!

All right. We're all right.

[ machinery whirring ]

So you want to be
a bering sea crabber, do you?

[ laughter ]

Monte:
We've got a huge quota to catch.

Let's just pray that we see
something down below us here.

Going over!

Narrator: One hundred
thirty-five miles southeast,

On the lady alaska.

Scott:
I can deal with the weather.

I can't deal with no crab
in the pots.

We have too much of that [bleep]
already.

I've got boat payments.

I got vendors screaming at me
to pay them.

Narrator: On top of his family
ship's $2.5 million price tag,

Captain scott campbell jr.
Shoulders

Another half million dollars in
debt for repairs and outfitting.

All my gear is right here.
Everything.

Big numbers.

So we should be
pretty frickin' dialed in here.

Narrator:
To keep the billmen at bay,

Junior goes all in on the school
he thinks is tracking west.

[ speaking indistinctly ]

And nothing.

What the [bleep] is going on?

Man: Yeah.

Oh, shnikies.

Narrator: Kicked up by
the supermoon's ripping tides,

Quarter-inch parasitic
crustaceans called sand fleas

Flourish, stripping the bait
to white bones

Before the scent can lure in
the prey.

Scott: I know there's crab here.

Not gonna get them to go
in the pots.

[ groans ]

The closer the moon is to
the earth, the bigger the tide.

And any time you have big,
big tides,

It has never been good
for sand fleas.

It just fires them right up.

Let's get them aboard.

Stack 'em, boys!

Scott: Wow.

Holy [bleep]

Watch out! Watch out! Watch out!

[ indistinct shouting ]

Narrator: On the lady alaska...

Scott: Wow.

Man: You guys all right?

Man: There's a lot of water.

Came out of nowhere.

That was a wave.
That was a big, big wave.

Narrator: A 25-foot swell blasts
the starboard rail,

Washing the 150-pound
steel hopper across the deck...

Scott: Watch out! Watch out!
Watch out!

Narrator: ...Narrowly sparing
the unprotected crew.

That's a crew...
I always call them, like...

Shouldn't name it this,
but I call it the crew k*ller

Because one wave can wipe out
the whole crew.

They would've all been hurt.

Man: Oh [bleep]

[ machinery whirring ]

Oh [bleep] you, sand flea.
[bleep] you.

Man:
It's pretty much picked clean.

Scott:
Got to be smart about this.

I cannot make a bad move.

We're not in a financial
position

For me to make another mistake.

Narrator: One hundred fifty-five
miles far northwest,

On the russian line...

Munsey: Oh, man.
We're up by the russian border.

Everything's frozen
this morning.

And I mean frozen...
Blue-ice status.

See the smoke on the water?

I don't know what temperature
it is,

But you only get that
when it's extremely cold.

Whoo!

Harley: This one was six miles
of good fishing.

[ exhales deeply ] boy.

We're on all our gear, but we
got it all frozen up again.

Narrator: His spot, 30 miles
from the former soviet domain,

Brings cold consequences

For captain steve
"harley" davidson...

The brunt of the supermoon's
arctic spray turned ice.

Steam and smoke coming off the
water just freezes to you.

It's strange as hell.

You feel like you're on
the shackleton expedition.

Look at this thing.

I'm wearing my crew out, I know.

I'm just gonna drift with it.

I'll go give them a hand.

We can all work together
on this one.

[ jackhammer clanking ]

Narrator: Chiseling the 10-inch
layer of ice from the boat

Requires all hands on deck...

till it's ours again, huh?

Narrator:
...Including the captain's.

Erik: He does that quite a bit,

Puts his little norwegian outfit
on and his norwegian snow suit,

And he jumps in.

Brady: He wouldn't ask you

[ jackhammer clanking ]

Get over, maybe we can grab
this first one and see, huh?

Narrator: His load lightened...

Harley:
Best string of the season.

Narrator: ...Harley awaits
the spoils of his setback

In the lucrative
pervenets canyon.

Harley: Finally found
where we kind of got some hope,

And we get some rewards.

Man: Oh [bleep]

Man: What is this?

Uh-oh!

Are you [bleep] kidding me?

Uh-oh. sh**t, sh**t, sh**t,
sh**t, sh**t.

That's not
what we're looking for.

Man: Not at all.

Nothing's come out of it. Zero.

Getting some pretty wimpy
results.

[ machinery whirring ]

Narrator:
The skipper defies convention,

Setting back on low numbers,

Gambling the crab
will come out of hiding

When the supermoon's
strong currents subside.

[ indistinct shouting ]

Harley: Try to throw that
diver bag father out, please.

[ alarm beeping ]

[bleep]

What the hell happened?

Holy [bleep]

We did get snagged.
Got something in the wheel.

[ alarm beeping ]

No!

Oh, god.

There's a diver.

There's another orange one
there.

We have a mess.

Narrator: Swept back towards the
ship by the ripping currents,

The pot's line and buoys bind
to the portside propeller...

If something happens
with my engine right now,

I'm gonna [bleep] panic, okay?

Narrator: ...A snarl that can
overload their engine,

Hobbling the southern wind
in the northern sea.

It's terrible.

We have two main engines,
a propeller on both sides.

It's a big wad of line
in my propeller.

Can't spin it.

I can just go to dutch
and go get a diver.

So what do you do?

You want see if we can hook it
and pull it up tight?

It's got a better chance
of snapping if you do that.

You know what I mean?
Instead of getting it sucked up.

At least have it humming
up tight

So when you drop it in gear,
it'll [bleep] chop, chop, chop.

Can you bring that throwing hook
back to the corner

Back here in the port?

Man: Roger!

Narrator: Harley's plan...

Pull the tangle
tight to the hull of the boat,

Directly in the path
of the propeller,

Hoping a well-placed cut
will set them free.

I don't know.
It hasn't freed up yet.

Narrator: Three hundred miles
from the nearest port,

Captain harley's attempt
to slice the line

Only succeeds in dangerously
straining the engine...

Harley: Way out in the middle
of the northern pacific ocean

And then running
at half capacity.

That ain't gonna work.

Narrator:
...Leaving him one propeller shy

Of being dead in the water
in the supermoon storm.

[ alarm blaring ]

Man: Engine's dying every time
he tries to put it in gear

'cause it's got line wrapped.

Even just from bouncing
back and forth,

Maybe it chafes
and snaps something and then...

Probably. Yeah.

Travel on the starboard
for a while.

See if something gives.

Narrator: Engineer munsey kennon
enacts plan b...

...Remove the brakes
from the portside shaft,

Allowing the propeller
to pinwheel

In the powerful currents,

Banking on tides and time
to unwind the tangled lines.

[ machinery whirring ]

But until the prop's unhindered,

The southern wind's operation
is at a full stop,

Stranded on the northern
grounds.

I got to get this frickin' line
right out of my wheel, man.

You're [bleep] 500 miles
from the beach, dude.

[ laughs ]
you got to root for me.

Narrator: One hundred forty

Scott: Couple of minutes,
we'll be ready to set.

This supermoon storm
and the strong moon

Has got everything
thrown out of whack.

These sand fleas are
a real problem right now.

Just trying to get
everything back on track.

[ indistinct shouting ]

These shots are gonna
make us money.

Narrator: After sand fleas
ravaged his bait

And any chance of attracting
crab...

Scott: This is gonna be
our deepest strand.

Narrator:

Plots to outwit
his teeny-tiny crustacean foes.

Scott:
Right now, we're in 68 fathoms.

These pots currently have
about 66 fathoms of line.

I got to put
a little half shot on

Just to get us out a little bit
deeper so we don't get bit.

whenever you're ready.

[ indistinct shouting ]

Narrator: By plunging his pots
into deeper,

Less turbulent waters,

Junior aims below
the supermoon's powerful tides

To escape the ravenous fleas.

Man: Gonna be
the fortune cookie string

Need some good fortune.

Scott: They're right here
in these grooves.

They're gonna start feeding
hard,

And we're gonna find
some fast fishing.

I'd bet my last dollar on it.

Wait a minute.

I don't even have a last dollar
anymore.

[ laughs ]

Narrator:
One hundred miles north...

...On the cornelia marie...

Casey:
Weather has just been crazy.

Guys have been getting beat on
pretty good.

We're bouncing around real good.
Spray's coming over the bow.

[bleep] whoa! Oh!

We are gonna haul the 44 pots
that I set off in the southeast.

I have a feeling the crab
are headed this way,

At least in my own little
made-up fairy-tale land

Of what I think crab are doing.

It would be really great

If there was something good
in there.

I'd be very happy.

[ machinery whirring ]

Narrator: Stalking the crab
and the southbound current,

Captains josh and casey
are hoping for a happy ending.

Man: Oh! Man: Yeah!

Ooh, yeah!

Man: Keep 'em coming, baby.

There's a lot of nice,
clean keepers in that one.

Man: Whoo!

You got it, man. Did a good job.

Casey:
These crab were headed this way.

I think I caught back up
with the school.

[ laughs ]

[ indistinct shouting,

go ahead and start rebaiting.

We're gonna start
setting these back.

Narrator:
Full pots are a second chance

For the cornelia boys
to fill their tanks.

Maria...

Make sure we really throw
those shots far out.

Narrator: ...And the second shot

Through the 50-knot winds
clear of the cornelia's path.

I'm gonna give it my best shot.

I hope I can make it work,

'cause I don't want to embarrass
myself.

Casey: Let's see how maria does.

in this last go-around.

And the greenhorn

Monte: Okay. Closing in here.

The whole [bleep] thing.

With the ice fog and everything,

We just had to pretty much
get them off the boat.

We didn't put them
really where we wanted to,

And it was kind of a bummer.

Narrator:

Due to dangerous ice buildup...

Monte:
Big mystery is what's here.

Hoping he makes a dent

to a two-engine boat.

and show them how it goes.

Betting that when the weather

Signs of life will come back up.
