18x22 - Sub-Zero Scramble

Post by bunniefuu »

This is not gonna be good.

The ice head just moving
closer and closer by the minute.

It's big.

And it doesn't stop.

And it keeps growing
as it comes.

This is just
a huge financial risk.

If we don't catch it,
the boat pays for it.

Dammit!

Throw it like you
**** mean it.

One shot, one k*ll.

Deckhand speaking...

It's like a razor blade
cutting through your boat.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Watch your feet.

Watch out, watch out.

We have a ticking
time b*mb on our hands.

570 miles north
of Dutch Harbor.

On the Northwestern.

Lauritz speaking...

We don't get cold.

Our lips just turn blue
and then we die.

Marybeth on phone speaking...

Oh, Marybeth. Hi.

This is Sig Hansen
on the Northwestern.

Hi.
How are you?

I'm doing good here.

Okay, so from the 60.08

and 176.14,

we're still looking
at about 20 miles.

Marybeth speaking...

- Or to the pack?
- To the pack.

Yeah. To the pack.

Marybeth speaking...

Okay.

Marybeth speaking...

So she said,
we're in a pretty bad spot.

Right at the point.

I don't think we have a lot
of time on our hands here.

We're talking about
a couple of days.

With the opilio
grounds cut in half

by the 300,000 square mile
Arctic ice pack.

If that's where the crab are,
then that's the game you play.

We're not going anywhere.

Captain Sig Hansen
charts a course

below its projected path,

betting that he can take advantage
of the nutrient-rich ice edge

before the floes
put a freeze on his gear.

Let's do this.

Roger.

Going over.

We're starting to see the steam
and mist start coming off the ocean.

And that's when you know that
the ice pack is close

and the ocean's wanting
to start freezing.

There is a strip of crab
in here, I believe,

but it's not very wide.

So I'm setting northwest,
southeast,

which is parallel to the
ice edge, which is wrong.

I should be setting
perpendicular

so that if it's coming
at you at an angle,

you want to start at the bottom,

try to get as many pots on board
as you can while it's coming down,

falling over.

But right now
I'm setting parallel

because it's the only way to get them
in the water where I think there's crab.

So I'm choosing crab over

the safety of the pots
right now.

Hope we're doing
the right thing.

I don't know.

22 miles southeast...

Whoo!

on the Summer Bay.

Step one,
catch the crab,

and we're almost there.

The goal is to get this caught
and get out of here.

If we don't beat the ice,

we're gonna have to reposition,
start this all over again.

Six weeks
into a grueling winter season,

Captain Wild Bill Wichrowski
hunts above the 60 line,

betting he can harvest
his remaining 25,000 pounds

of opilio crab before
the ice moves in.

Hopefully these
last on and get out of here.

I see the ice in the bottom
of the c*ck glass.

Are you guys ready?

Nah.

Waiting to set.

Yeah.

Wild Bill speaking...

These ones are
shorter to get on.

They stick to your boots.

But right
when Bill needs speed,

Crewman James Jones
is t*rd to the party.

Got to embrace the suck.

I can't believe it
at this point in my career,

I'm dealing with ****,
like this.

James is such
an indifferent kind of guy.

Time to go rock 'n' roll.

We're out here to
get it done as fast as we can.

Come on, let's go.

Move and act like you know
what you're doing.

Roger.
One shot, one k*ll.

Yeah, buddy.

We'll see what happens.

Come on, crab!

All right,
here we go.

Whoo-hoo-hoo!

Yeah!

Cha-ching!

That makes a difference.

Looks pretty damn good
right there, good color crab.

Yeah!

Big ones in here.

Whoo!

Deckhand 3 speaking...

This is looking good here.

These are nice, big, clean crab.

Let's see what we got here.

Good one.

We're getting
back up into the zone here.

Whoo!

Yeah!

Two-zero-two.

This is awesome.

Whoo!

Whoo-hoo-hoo!

Perfect.

Yeah, baby!

Whoo!

Landon speaking...

Whoa, come on!

Bunch of ice over there.

Exactly what we're
trying to avoid.

This is the kind of ****
that James' and guys

outlook on what the hell
he's doing here.

But doesn't make sense
to run to another spot.

I'm gonna have to fight for
this one all the way to the end.

I still think it's doable.

Catch this last batch of crab.

Just get our number and leave.

Okay, you guys, be careful.

Wild Bill speaking...

Deckhand speaking...

Landon speaking...

Paul that buoy up.

James speaking...

Oh. Hey, hold on.

- Deckhand speaking...
- James speaking I know!

James speaking...

Get somebody else up there
to help get that pot free.

Hang on.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

Watch out, watch out, watch out.

Is it coming?

Right about...
Watch out.

Yeah.

Nice and easy.

Deckhand 2 speaking...

Here it goes.

James speaking...

We're gonna
set back through this.

Can't run away from the crab.

Whoo!

Yeah, baby!

Two-zero-two!

Two-zero-two.

I don't know how many picks
we're going to get,

but we're gonna
give it our best.

520 miles
southeast, on the Patricia Lee.

Forty-eight hours.

You want an answer in 48 hours?

Give me a chance
to think about this.

I appreciate the call.
I'll call you back. Okay?

All right, thanks.

Wow.

Well, that changes everything.

Well.

Let's see what the troops think.

So, guys, here's the scoop.

I just got a phone call that

we've got 250,000 pounds
of golden crab

that we can catch out west.

- Deckhand 1 speaking...
- Yeah.

Deckhand 1 speaking...

- Uh, like right now.
- Deckhand 2 speaking...

Yeah.

I just want to know you guys all
in to go fish more golden crab?

- Jimmy?
- Jimmy speaking...

That means everybody's
making more money.

It's an extra $4 million
if we catch the whole thing.

But we got to move
all the gear out there, right?

That is a little issue.

Deckhand 2 speaking...

We might have a few long nights.

And it's leased crab, and
we got to guarantee the lease.

So if we don't catch it, that
means the boat pays for it.

Wow.

This is just a huge
financial risk and commitment.

So let's think about it and
talk about it a little more.

I got 48 hours
to make a decision,

so we just got a couple minutes,

we're going to be hauling again.

Let's get ready.

This is really a struggle just
to catch this 150,000

now and they want me
to sign up for another 250.

This golden king crab,

it's just there's an eastern
district and a western district.

We're in the eastern district
right now,

and this is in
the western district.

So we have to move all
of our crab pots over there.

All of them.

Captain Rip Carlton
weighs the golden opportunity

to fish for an extra 4 million
in gross revenue.

If he fails, he and the crew

will have to pay
for every pound left uncaught.

There's two buoys up,
they're coming up.

All right, boys,
let's rock and roll.

They're up.
We got to go.

- Let's go.
- Let's make it work.

We're gonna get after it.

We got to go haul up all we can.

Oh,
they are coming up right now.

Come on!

Here we go.

It's go time.

We only got a short time to haul

with the currents like they are.

You got her?

Yeah, you did.

Come on!

Let's do this!

Okay, here we go.

**** damn it!

**** Damn it.

Aboard the Patricia Lee.

You got her,?

Yeah, you did.

Come on!

Let's do this!

Okay, here we go.

**** damn it!

**** damn it.

****

Not good on the knot.
Right at the **** knot.

We have a knot,
current's ripping it.

And I was driving at full
speed on it, and it went pop.

That's why we don't like knots.

Heart breaker right here.

Just got a lot harder.

Now we got a one-ender.

I got to find the other end.

Can't take that quota unless
we can haul some here.

Used to be you're only
as good as your last season,

then it turned
into your last trip.

As time's gone on,
it's your last string.

520 miles northwest
on the Summer Bay.

Whoo!

Coming up.

Here's the ones
we set right in the ice.

Took a big chance on this
and I'm banking it does...

does the rest of this deed

where hopefully
we finish our trip.

Setting back in
defiance of the Arctic pack,

Captain Wild Bill pulls up
on his sets

in the cold opilio-attracting
waters of the north.

I think we probably got it
into gear.

In fact,
we have to have it into gear

or this is going to be
all for nothing.

Betting his 90 pots
will top his single day record

of 20,000 pounds.

We've committed
to put them on

just now as they're...

as they're gonna be
in the gear what we need.

It's right on the Mark.

It hasn't moved,
which is a good sign.

We'll see what happens here,
it's where we hit some crab,

so hopefully this pays off.

Let's go.

Whoo!

Yeah, bull's eye!

Come on. Come on.

Looks good.
In one little box.

Whoo! Come on!

Here we go.

Got it!

Whoo!

There you go.
There you go.

Ice, ice, baby!

That works.

Look at that.

Yeah!

Oh, yeah.

Looks great.
That's what we needed.

Will Bill speaking...

Landon speaking...

Second one's in the block.

Looks good so far.

I do not regret putting them
where I put them.

- Yeah!
- Whoo!

That's what we need
to finish this **** up.

So if this string stays
consistent,

we pretty much got this thing
in the can.

Right now,
it's eight something pound,

the highest it's ever been
that I have removed.

Pot coming up.

Missed hook toss at the rail.

Let me get on
the rail with the hook.

Throw it like you hook
this **** thing,

you got to throw like
you're gonna hook it.

You got to throw it harder.

You got to throw it faster.

And you got to pull this son
of a b*tch in faster.

Roger!

Not so good, man.

I think name him Sir Miss-a-Lot.

You know, I was gonna
make him a knight, you know?

I crown you Sir Miss-a-Lot.

Let's go.

This tentative ****.

When you're on the rail,

it's like I got
training wheels on.

Throw it like you
**** mean it.

Let's go!

Yeah!

There we go.

We just spent about eight
minutes driving in circles

for a missed hook toss.

I'm going less than two knots.

James kind of takes it well.

I think he lacks motivation
on everything he does.

We're not gonna need a
whole lot to finish this out.

But we're going slow as a stink.

It's going to take forever.

With any luck,
this string holds to the end.

Thirty miles northwest.

On the Northwestern.

We're on our first string
this morning.

We'll see how this does.

This string goes
from 75 fathoms to 71,

covers about 5 miles.

We've got a day before
that ice edge hits.

Hopefully these pots pan out.

The first pot's up.

Deckhand speaking...

There we go.

Ooh, whee!

Now if we can just do that
steady for 100 pots.

There's some
crab coming up here.

That's all we can ask
for right now.

There we go.

- Yeah!
- Proud.

That's gonna work.

That's what we're looking
for right there.

That's looking good.

I want them all like that.

Whoo!

****

Let's go! Yeah!

Pew, pew, pew!
Pew, pew!

Six-hundred-and-thirty.

Six-hundred-and-thirty?

Yeah!

That's good.

Alright.

Awesome.

That is awesome.

We needed that.

We're in a dangerous, dangerous
area to be fishing in right now.

But that's the motivator.

That's the kind
of fishing we came for.

And honestly,
I couldn't be happier.

Yeah.

Damn it, damn it,
damn it, damn it, damn it.

This is unexpected.

This is not...

There's another floe right
behind it there, too, so...

God!

We are definitely in harm's way.

Ah, ****!

Aboard the Northwestern.

That's not what we want to see.

I didn't think we'd see this till
tomorrow morning sometime.

I figured we had time.

We are definitely in harm's way.

It's the first stuff
that break...

that comes off before
the main pack.

Slicing
into Captain Sig's grounds,

razor sharp sheet ice
and larger bergs,

the advanced party
of the Arctic Pack.

That being said,
these winds are supposed

to switch around northwesterly.

And that will help.

So eventually,
this ice is going to recede.

And so there is another window
of time for us.

But that's real risky.

So in the back of my mind,
I'm still thinking

if I lay these back through,
are they gonna still be here?

That's the negative to a
psychopath's **** mind right there.

Maybe I'll just set them back.

After planting
his flag up north...

Yeah, right.
We'll get it ready.

...Captain Sig
stands his ground.

Even when ice floe rumors
become ice cold facts.

Every few hours,
this game is changing.

But if I see crab,
I want to put it back.

We're throwing the dice.

Five-hundred-and-thirty
miles south.

The search for buoys.

The world's biggest game
of hide and seek.

It's awesome.

On the Patricia Lee.

And we knew it was
gonna get worse.

But this is worse than I thought

it was gonna get worse.

We've already managed to
part up the string.

We're 100% on the failure rate.

We have nowhere to go but up.

I don't have much time
to make my mind up.

He offered me a 250,000 pounds

of additional golden king crab.

I got to figure
this out pretty quick.

He wanted an answer today.

It's crazy.

Do we really want
to try to chance it

and go after some more with
all this **** going on?

Captain Rip scans
for his missing 50 pots,

every one needed
to catch his quota

and to guarantee an additional
$4 million worth of golden kings.

We've got some seriously
tough tides the next few days.

We got to try to get
as much done as we can.

I can't find the freakin' buoys.

Current just takes
the buoys underwater.

And there they are!

Hello!

Right there.

We're definitely in business.
Let's go.

Deckhand 1 speaking...

All righty.

Let's get ready to rumble!

We're gonna haul it fast.

Get some crab,
pull it on the boat.

Hold, hold!

Deckhand 1 speaking...

Hey, we got to fix
this block here.

We got a issue.

Yeah.

The pin broke.

Oh! Great. Okay.

We finally see the gear,

and now we've got a broken bolt

on the stiff arm of the block.

The bolt is sheared off there.

Let's see what happens there.

The stiff arm keeps that block

from just rotating
whatever way it wants.

So if you didn't have
a stiff arm,

the block would just rip
the hydraulic hoses off,

they'd fly back into you,

and nothing would be good
with that.

We got to get
this thing frickin' fixed

and we got to get hauling
or we're out of business.

Deckhand 1 speaking...

Deckhand 2 speaking...

Sometimes you just got to
take matters into your own hands.

I got to go get this.

Come up a little on the crane.

All right, pull on that.

- Pull tight.
- Yeah.

That's good right there.

Got it.

It's gonna go in.

There we go.

I think you're gonna be good.

Good job. Thanks.

It's fixed.

Yeah. The bolt's in.
It's tight.

We're in business. Okay.

Where are
the **** damn buoys?

I don't **** see them now.

Now I got to find them again

and pray they aren't frickin'
underwater again.

Could be five minutes
and they're gone.

It is so hard to make
a living out here.

You got to really enjoy pain.

You have to love it
'cause it's a lot of pain.

Five-hundred-forty
miles north aboard the Northwestern.

We've got 60 pots up
in this area.

Right now, I'm pulling
these on short soak.

That's because
the ice is nearby.

On his hottest
opilio numbers of the season,

Captain Sig fishes amongst
the floes,

getting in one last score

before the solid pack ice
catches him with his pots down.

Wasn't sure
how fast it was moving.

So we need
to be very careful here.

Oh, ****!

It's huge!

On the Northwestern.

Oh, ****!

It's huge.

It looks like at least
four to six miles.

So we got to get 'em on deck.

Guys, it's right on
the end of the year,

right on the end of our string,

so we got to go in the ice floe.

I thought we have
till tomorrow morning.

That's not what happened.

These got to come on board,
okay?

All right?

It's going to be a really,
really long night.

With
the Arctic pack moving in,

Sig rescues 60 pots
in the throes of ice,

four feet thick, strong enough
to penetrate the steel

of the Northwestern's hull.

I haven't really had to deal
with ice packs

since I've been here,

but I've heard stories
and this and that.

So hopefully,
we get all our pots

before they get swept away.

Okay, Clark. You guys ready?

Roger.

Pot coming up.

Oh, yeah!

****

I don't see
the next one in line.

So I think we got bit.

This thing's moving fast.

Ice is just chasing
after us now.

Next one got moved too.

I think we got bit here.

I can't run.

I'm just gonna have to get
the gear on first,

get this, get it done
and then get out of here.

Bottom line, they can hate me
later, hate me now, I don't care.

I just don't want
to lose all my gear.

Twenty-five miles southeast.

On the Summer Bay.

That's what we need.

That looks pretty
damn good right there.

Yeah!

We are **** rocking!

- Yeah, baby!
- Yeah!

- There you go.
- Oh, yeah.

Why don't you take your time.

We'll stack it.

Put them on.
Headed to the bar.

With 30 baited pots to go,

Captain Wild Bill makes
the call to stack out,

wagering his remaining
10,000 pounds is in the gear.

James speaking...

What the ****?

Bad sorting there, James.

He's hardly even looking
at that stick

and he's throwing them
one after another.

And we have huge numbers.

Last one had 32,
the one before, it had 30.

And I watched little or no
hesitation on the sorting onto the tote.

And that would be you, James.

****

I've been
driving boats since '89.

I've never delivered
an inferior load.

And this better not be the one.

Alaska State law
decrees that size matters for opilio.

Anything smaller than
3.1 inches

and they'll slip Bill
a whopping $15,000 fine.

Hey, Landon, I'm going
to pause on this one.

You guys do QC
on that back tote.

Landon speaking...

They're just coming too easy
for old James there.

Landon speaking...

Now look at him, he's
throwing them over the side.

Oh, I don't know. ****.

You hardly ****
hesitated on any.

You were throwing,

like, six to one in there
what you did on this one.

You cannot **** me
on the size of these crabs.

Looks like he's just throwing

whatever in there
to get out of here,

which I don't blame him.

I want out of here worse
than he does.

Actually, I want him out of here
worse than I want out of here.

He's a **** dirt bag.

Producer speaking...

Yeah, I'm confident in my sort.

How many are in that tote?

So we went from 30 and 32 to 14.

I watched him through
all those pots,

just going, going,
going to that tote.

And then I call him
on his sizing,

and he slows down like,
by 70 percent

and the number's cut in half
on what's going in there.

What's that tell you?

Producer speaking...

And it's my name on
this **** fish ticket.

All right, guys. Nice job.
Last pot.

Ringing the bell
and get the hell out of here.

Yeah, Roger.

I don't know how those
numbers are gonna be.

I just know the way the
fishing game usually operates.

If they find something
low quality or wrong size,

they're gonna pull the plug.

Fifteen. One-five.

We won't know that until
we get the crab offloaded,

see what we end up with.

On the Summer Bay.

I'm not really superstitious,
but it's a tough world.

You got to do
what you got to do.

The boys are gonna do
a haircut for...

for luck.

In the skipper's doghouse.

Danny is getting
a bowl cut today.

Bowl cut.

James pulls out his clippers
to cut the tension.

I think the real question is,
is can we go, like Germanic

or English accent?

James speaking...

Here we go.

Danny speaking...

I'm gonna put it down, James.

Dude, you're gonna get
so much a*s for this haircut.

James speaking...

Danny speaking...

I guess everything
comes back into style.

Eventually.

On the golden
king crab grounds...

I'm not even sure
the buoys are gonna be up.

aboard the Patricia Lee.

Oh!

And they
are the buoys right there.

Round two.

Do this.

Got 'em, guys. We got 'em.

Bingo!

We just got offered some quota
that's available in the next district.

Which is
a huge financial opportunity.

It's a huge obligation.

But I got to finish this trip.

We need everything in the
world to go right to do this.

And unless we're on it,
we're not going to get there.

There's just no way.

Okay.

Whoo!

Oh, and there's crab in it.

Hell yes.

Boom.

Crab in the anchor
pot's a good sign.

Big crab.

Three-two.

This looks good.

Try to keep that block rolling.

Whoo!

Yes, sir.

We're in Nirvana.

Crab fishing nirvana.

I like it.

Hey, I wanted to call you

and tell you I'm going
to take you up on that deal.

We'll catch that 250,
and we will guarantee it.

We'll do it.

100 percent confidence.

Thanks for the opportunity.
I appreciate it.

We won't let you down.

All right. Whoo!

Got a little chill there.

****, I hope I catch this.

It's a frickin' huge risk.

We have been battling every day.

It's wearing on them physically

because I'm pushing them
so hard.

I mean,
we're gonna get the job done,

but it's gonna be ugly
how it happens.

In Akutan Harbor...

I'm nervous as ****.

on the Summer Bay.

I just got my fish ticket.

Let me look.

They have
an average weight here?

Looks like they gave us
the full price for all of it.

I don't know.
All I know is it's in.

Everybody's getting paid.

James got a part in here.

So far.

I'll find something else.

Netting 580,000
bucks for the winter season.

I think we're good.

Man speaking...

Bill earns
each Deckhand $32,000.

That was a tough year
not having any king crab.

And then come out of it with
some money in your pocket.

Made myself a little older.

I looked in the mirror today,
I think, "Holy smokes,

I'm getting senor discount
at Denny's, baby."

That's it. We're going home.

Done.

The next part
is a half mile up there.

It's an ice field.

**** It's crazy.

Look at the size of that.

I'm nervous going through this

because they're hard pieces
and they're stacked up.

So it's like a razor blade
cutting through your boat.

Yeah. Fishing in the ice.

We got all eyes looking
for two orange dots.

This is what takes
a lot of time,

and hopefully the bags aren't
broken from the main line.

I'm hoping
we don't lose our pots.

This is horrifying.

I know the majority
of the guys are pushing up.

It makes me wonder
where Jonathan's at.

I haven't seen him.

I was thinking about
giving him a shout.

Time Bandit.

- Hello.
- Johnny, you got me?

Hi, Sig.
How you doin', man?

The ice head, it's right on me.

It's really, really bad.

It's like there's
no fingers left, you know?

Yeah, that **** is moving.

Yeah.
I called the ice desk lady.
