hello sir timothy nobody wears a
sun suit on the first day of school said
claude
during playtime timothy hoped
and hoped that claude would fall into a
puddle
but he didn't
when timothy came home his mother asked
how was school today

what i liked most was to paint and play
dog i would pretend
i was a beagle a beagle huh
sounds like a neat game hey ashley
what's the story amigo
yeah hi pino hi tino hello hi
hi matt is this your granddaughter
ashley yes this is ashley
hi ashley and she's really excited to be
here she
loves to be read too you do mm-hmm you
know
ashley i have a book about a girl who
goes to school
and just like you she loves stories
maybe you'd like to read it oh will you
please please please
please read it to us of course of course
this story is called amazing grace and
it's written by mary hoffman
and illustrated by caroline bench
now grace was a girl
who loved stories she didn't mind if
they were read to her or
told to her or made up in her own head
she didn't care if they were in books or
movies
or out of nana's long memory
grace just loved stories
and after she heard them and sometimes
while they were still going on
grace would act them out and she always
gave herself the most exciting part
grace went into battle as joan of arc
and wove a wicked web as a nancy the
spider she hid inside the wooden horse
at the gates of troy
she went exploring for lost kingdoms
she sailed the seven seas with a peg leg
and a parrot she was hiawatha
sitting by the shining big sea water
and mowgli in the backyard jungle
most of all grace loved to act out
adventure stories and fairy tales
and when there was no one else around
grace played
all the parts herself she set out to
seek her fortune
with no companion but her trusty cat
and found a city with streets paved in
gold
or she was aladdin rubbing his magic
lamp to make the genie appear
sometimes she could get ma and nana to
join in when they weren't too busy
then she was dr grace
and their lives were in her hands
one day grace's teacher said
they would do the play peter pan now
grace knew who she wanted to be
when she raised her hand raj said
you can't be peter that's a boy's name
but grace kept her hand up you can't be
peter pan
whispered natalie he isn't black
but grace kept her hand up all right
said the teacher lots of you want to be
peter pan
so we'll have auditions next week to
choose the parts
she gave them words to learn when grace
got home
she seemed sad what's the matter
asked mom
reg says i can't be peter pan because
i'm a girl
that just shows you what raj knows said
mom
a girl can be peter pan if she wants to
grace cheered up then later she
remembered something else
natalie says i can't be peter pan
because i'm black
she said ma looked angry
but before she could speak nana said
it seems that natalie is another one who
don't know nothing
you can be anything you want grace if
you put your mind to it
on saturday nana told grace they were
going out
in the afternoon they caught a bus and a
train into town
nana took grace to a grand theater
a sign outside read rosalie
wilkins in romeo and juliet
sparkling lights are we going to the
ballet nana
that's grace we are honey but first i
want you to look at this picture
grace looked up and saw a beautiful
ballerina
in a tutu above the dancer it said
stunning new juliet
that one is little rosalie from back
home in trinidad
said nana her granny and me we grew up
together on the island
she's always asking me do i want tickets
to see her rosalie dance
so this time i said yes
after the ballet grace played the part
of juliet
dancing around her room in her imaginary
tutu
i can be anything i want she thought
on monday the class met for auditions to
choose
who was best for each part when it was
grace's turn to be peter
she knew exactly what to do and all the
words to say
she had been peter pan all weekend
she took a deep breath and imagined
herself
flying when it was time to vote
the class chose raj to be captain hook
and natalie to be wendy and there was
no doubt who would be peter pan
everyone voted for grace you were
fantastic
whispered natalie the play was a
big success and grace was an amazing
peter pan
after it was all over she said i feel as
if i could
fly all the way home you probably
could said ma yeah said nana
if grace put a mind to it she can do
anything she wants wow
well is that what you thought of the
story good
how did you think of it hino well well
i like grace cause she's hip to stories
like me now do you remember what the
girls
told why the girls told grace she
couldn't be peter pan
because she was black yes
well you know i i especially like the
fact that she made up her own mind
whether or not she was going to play
peter pan and she did it
yep yep yep she was a spunky girl huh
oh oh here come my amigos oh would you
read us another book now please please
please
that sounds like a good idea oh good
good
hi everybody how you doing this is
ashley and matt
hello hello everybody and
i want to tell you about a story with a
very strange title
rumpelstiltskin it's a very old story
and it has
a little man and a king and lots of gold
and a queen and a baby have any of you
heard it no
i have i have yes first time i heard
this story i was about your age about
five years old my teacher read it to me
you want to hear it yeah okay
this version of this story so old story
now remember
it's been retold and illustrated by paul
o zielinski that's the name of the man
who retold this story
once there was a poor miller who had a
beautiful daughter
on his way to town one day the miller
encountered the king wanting to impress
him
the miller said i have a daughter
who knows the art of turning straw
into gold now
the king had a real passion for gold
and such an art intrigued him
so he ordered the miller to send his
daughter to the castle
straight away when the girl was brought
before him the king led her to a room
that was filled with straw he gave her
spools and a spinning wheel and said
you may spin all night
but if you have not spun destroy into
gold by morning
you will have to die
with that you locked the door and the
girl was left inside
alone there sat the poor miller's
daughter without the slightest idea
how anyone could spin straw into gold
for the life of her she did not know
what to do
she grew more
and more frightened and then
she began to weep
[Music]
suddenly the door sprang open
and a tiny man stepped in
good evening mistress miller why
are you sobbing oh
said the girl i must spend this straw
into gold
but i don't know how what will you
give me if i spin it for you
the little man asked
my necklace answered the girl the little
man took the necklace
and sat down at the spinning wheel he
pulled
three times
and the spoon was wound full of gold
thread he fitted another spool on
and
three pulls and that one two was full
and so it went until morning when all
the straw was spun
and all the spools were full of gold
when the king came at sunrise he was
amazed
and delighted but all the gold
made him greedier so he took the
miller's daughter to a larger room
filled with straw and he ordered her to
spin
this straw too before dawn
if she valued her life
the girl did not know what to do
she began to weep once more the door
opened
and the little man entered
what will you give me if i spin this
straw
into gold for you he asked
oh the ring on my finger
answered the girl and the little man
took her ring
then he set the spinning wheel whirring
and before the night was over
he had spun all the straw into gleaming
gold shortly after sunrise
the king returned piles of
gold and spools glowed in the morning
light the king rejoiced
at the sight of so much gold
but still he was not satisfied
he led the miller's daughter into a
third even
bigger room that was piled
high with straw tonight
you must spin this straw
to order the king
and if you succeed you shall become
my wife because
he thought i could not find a richer
wife
in all the world when the king had left
the little man appeared for the third
time
what will you give me if i spin for you
yet
once more he asked i have nothing else
the girl replied
then promise me that when you become
queen your first child will belong to me
the miller's daughter gasped
how could she promise such a thing then
she thought
but who knows whether that will ever
happen
and as she could think of no other way
to save her life
she promised and the little man once
again
spun all the straw into gold
when the king came in the morning and
found everything as he had wished
he married the miller's daughter and she
became a queen
a year passed and the queen brought a
handful baby boy into the world
she gave scarcely a thought to the
little man
but one day he appeared
suddenly in her room
now give me what you promised me
he demanded the queen pleaded with the
little man
he could take all the treasures in the
kingdom
if he would only let her keep her child
but her pleading was in vain
so then she began to weep so piteously
that at last the little man was moved
i will give you three days he said if by
the end of that time
you know my name you may keep your child
long into the night the queen sat
and through the next day thinking over
all the names she had
ever heard that evening the little man
returned
beginning with casper melchior
and balthazar the queen recited
every name she knew one after another
but to each one the little man replied
that is not my name the second day
the queen had inquiries made in town
searching for new names
and when the little man came that
evening she posed the strangest and most
unusual ones to him she tried
pasty ribs and
pleco ram and
string bones but he would
only reply that is not my name
now the queen grew truly frightened and
she sent her most faithful servants
into the woods to look for the little
man
the servants searched through thickets
and over clearing
deep into the forest and at last
near the top of a high hill she spied
him
he was riding on a cooking spoon around
a great fire
and crying out i brew my beer i
bake my loaves and soon the queen's own
son
i'll claim oh lucky me for no one knows
that rumpelstiltskin is my name
the servant made her way back as fast as
she could manage
and at midday reached the castle you can
imagine
how glad the queen was when she heard
the name
late that evening the little man arrived
now mr scream he said
do you know my name or do i take the
child
so the queen asked him is your name
will no no
is your name phil
in that case is your name
rumplestiltskin
yeah that devil told you that
the devil told you that shrieked
rumplestiltskin
and in a fury he jumped
on his cooking spoon and flew out the
window
and he never was heard from
again
now let me ask you a question do you
