today's story time

do you know where stories come from kino

join him for a story about the

mysterious

baba yaga she was the last of her kind

a creature of legends a being of the

forest

then it's a story about a little boy and

his

old dog read by james avery

he was very lonely it would never be the

same

he closed his eyes and

almost saw old dog

and last a book about a painter and his

daughter

we love to dance after lunch we're very

good dancers

Storytime Funding

story time is made possible by a grant

from helen and peter bean

so that families everywhere can share

the joy of reading with their children

[Music]

so

okay once upon a time there was a banana

that could talk and

no let me see it all started one day

when i sat on a marshmallow ah

no i don't like that either hiya yay

this is driving me

bonkers what's driving you bonkers kino

oh

see i have to write a story for school

and i can't think of anything to write

about

you can't no well you know me i love

stories

but where do they come from how do story

writers figure out what to

write about hmm well

maybe this calls for an investigation

an investigation mm-hmm you know like

reporters in the newspapers and on

television

oh you mean you mean to find out things

by asking lots of questions

exactly hmm an investigation

about where stories come from

i could do that couldn't i

boy this coat is terrific and so is this

hat

yup yup i'm gonna get the real story on

stories

you'll

hi see welcome hi lucy

this is my friend matthew and my friend

telise

hi hi telis hi matthew hi patricia

hi kino hi hi keno patricia are you

gonna read one of your

books to us well yes i am

keno oh don't you look handsome in this

code and hat

oh yeah see i'm a reporter and

i'm getting the story on stories and

i have a question for you all right how

do you figure out what to write your

stories about

well most of my ideas comes from

remembering when i was a little girl

myself

but i also remember all of the stories

my grandmother told me

my grandmother my babushka who was from

russia told me stories all the time

so most of the stories she told me were

from that country

oh i see as a matter of fact the story

i'm going to tell you today

is about a very special babushka

which means grandmother and russian it's

called

Babushka

babushka baba and i wrote this story

and i drew and painted all of the

pictures in the book

she was the last of her kind a creature

of

legends a being of the forest

she ruled her woods alone

she ate alone and slept alone

her loneliness made bitter by the

stories that were told of her

stories of the terrible horrible

baba yaga and so

she watched sadly from afar as people of

the nearby village

celebrated the seasons of their lives

together

kept holidays together and rejoiced

at weddings together most of all

they pleasured in the birth of their

young

how she ate just to hold a little one

if only for a moment

how she longed to have a little one of

her very own

but she was old now and knew that would

never be

many mornings the babushkas bustled by

her forest with their grandchildren

i wish i had a grandchild

she would say to herself

[Music]

then one day as she came close to the

dacha of one of the babushkas

she saw some of their clothes drying on

the clothesline

i shall borrow these thought baba yaga

i will be a babushka instead of a baba

yaga

she looked at the reflection of herself

in the stream

i shall have to scrub the forest off

from my skin

i shall have to cut my nails

oh my hair but my ears she said with a

sigh

what shall i do about my ears

then she remembered that babushkas

always wore scarves

she carefully dressed herself

yes she said with glee i looked just

like a babushka she bathed the creatures

of the forest to find goodbye

i'm going into the village she beamed

as she entered the village she was

warmly greeted by the other babushkas

sitting under the shade in the middle of

the square

come sister sit with us one of them said

baba yaga smiled inside

no one recognized her they showed her a

brand new

baby that had just been born that

morning

this is my new grandchild one proud

babushka shirt

and this is my masha isn't she dear

one after another the babushkas shared

their babies with her

and just then natasha and her little son

victor passed by them

one of the babushkas whispered too bad

that little one has no babushka to care

for him

when his mother works as they went on

admiring the other babies bobby aga

walked

right after natasha and victor she

followed them down the road

and into their little house

old one natasha greeted her cheerfully

how is it that you are here perhaps you

can

help me bubba yoga said i am new

in the village and quite alone i need a

place to stay

i could cook i could clean i could take

care

of your son for you well but i have no

money to pay you

natasha answered sadly i need no money

all i need is a place to rest my head

and a little food then you shall indeed

stay with us

old one i piece your eyes

i hold your heart baba yaga said happily

and stay she did

oh how happy she was when natasha went

to work

in the mornings she and victor cleaned

the little house together

and when all of the tasks were done baba

yaga took

victor to the edge of the woods this was

her

favorite part of the day

[Music]

she pulled victor into her lap

and she cradled him there she told him

wondrous tales and legends of the great

forest

she sang him songs that he had never

heard before

then they would just sit there together

and daydream without any words at all

as time passed their love for each other

grew and grew

and baba yaga took as much pride in

victor's life as a real grandmother

would

she was well loved in return

and she had earned her place with all of

the other grandmothers

under the shade of the village square

baba yaga was

happy and content with her new

life then one day

as the babushkas gathered they started

telling stories

to the children one spoke of event

spottage

the grey wolf and the firebird another

told the tale of sister al-anushka

and brother ivanuska they all laughed

then one of them rose from her seat

her eyes narrowed and her voice hissed

as she unfolded the legend of the

horrible

evil wicked baba yaga

she it's babies the woman said as all

stared in

wide-eyed amazement she flies through

the air on an old stump and cast spells

she comes out of the forest and takes

children in the dead of the night

another warned she is ugly

a heg evil

hateful yet another sang out

and if you don't behave

she'll get you

victor hugged close to baba yaga

that night when she put victor to bed

he cried himself to sleep

baba yaga tried to calm him but her own

heart was heavy and sad

there was only one thing to do go back

to her

forest before victor learned who she

really was

she left a note for victor and his

mother saying

i kiss your eyes i hold you in my heart

my beloved ones

i will never forget your kindness

and she signed the note your babushka

she laughed never to return

Wolves

for a very long time victor went to the

edge of the forest almost every day

it helped him remember his babushka whom

he missed so

then one day as he sat he saw yellow

evil eyes peering at him from the deep

blackness of the forest

then he could make out the shapes that

went with the burning eyes and he saw

that the eyes belonged to a pack of

wolves he screamed for help

but he was soon surrounded by them the

villagers came

running but the wolves snapped at them

and snarled when the villagers tried to

get close to victor

oh please his mother cried someone help

my baby

at that very moment the trees parted

and out of the forest crashed a fearsome

figure

snarling and gnashing its teeth at the

wolves

the crowd screamed and the creature died

them menacingly as it sprang

like a cat the savage wolves the wolves

scattered and ran

then the creature moved closer to the

child who was howling with fright

and when the gnarled hands reached for

the boy his mother screamed

the baba you're gone is going to eat him

just then the creature

snatched that child from the ground the

villagers

gasped with horror then

Baba Yaga

with a loud smack it

kissed the child and then smiled through

eyes

brimming with tears the weathered arms

held him close

and rocked him so gently

although she didn't look the same victor

knew that warm hug well

victor cried and then he hugged her back

well there was a great celebration in

the village

that very night for a very unusual

babushka there were flowers given bread

and salt offered

songs sung and dances danced one of the

babushkas moved close to her and took

baba yaga's hands

and called out so everyone would hear

those who judge one another

on what they hear or see and

not on what they know of them in their

hearts are fools indeed

here here the mayor sang out and

everyone cheered

baba yaga smiled and accepted with grace

their tributes for the rest of her days

she kissed many eyes and held scores of

hearts in her good keeping

she was spoken of in the highest regard

and she was

well loved and from that time on she was

known as

babushka baba yaga

and that is the ant oh wow

that was such a cool story patricia

thank you kino

i like the whole story why do you think

they were afraid of the baba yaga

because it was a myth that

they ate that she ate

children very good but her heart

what about her heart her heart was

loving

yeah very good so you just made that

up huh yes but remember

i was raised on old russian folk tales

and stories from the time i was very

small

which makes it so easy today to invent

new stories i believe all of us are

full of stories and tales all you have

to do is

look hard enough and then use your

imagination

hmm gee i just

i just thought of something i know a

place that's filled with

zillions of stories hey thanks patricia

thanks matthew thanks to lise i'll see

you all later okay

i have some more investigating to do oh

excuse me

bye-bye bye-bye

James Avery

the library's loaded with stories i'll

get some great ideas here for sure

well hi mr avery hi kino nice outfit

oh yeah thanks i'm a reporter

and i'm finding out where stories come

from oh well i know where this story

comes from

the author charlotte zalato told me the

story

behind the story when she was a little

girl

something very sad happened so she wrote

the book to tell us how she felt

she wanted to share her memories with us

would you like to hear the story oh

yeah sure okay well the name of the book

is the old dog and the author was

charlotte zalato

and the illustrations are by james

ransom

okay okay here we go

ben went to pat his dog good morning

she didn't open her eyes she was an old

dog

he patted her but she didn't wag her

tail

[Music]

ben got his father his father leaned

over the old dog

he shook his head slowly

put his arm around ben

she's dead he said softly

ben looked at his dog but she didn't

look back

she just lay still

ben didn't understand

he walked to school slowly and when he

came home

old dog wasn't at the door to meet him

ben drank his milk but old dog was not

there

watching him

he went outside and he ran down the hill

the way he and old dog always did

but old dog wasn't there to run with him

he picked up a good stick

but there was no one to throw it for

[Music]

ben went back up the hill and into the

house

when the phone rang no big

dog came rushing to bark at the sack

[Music]

then went over to the window he stared

outside

death means someone isn't there

he thought he was very lonely

it would never be the same

he closed his eyes and almost

saw old dog

i miss you he said into the air

he began to cry

no old brown and white dog was there to

comfort him

or to welcome the new

white and black puppy ben's father was

bringing home

[Music]

the end oh

gosh it really is sad if you have a pet

that you love

and it dies that happened to me once

i had a goldfish that died

but ben's father brought him a new puppy

do you think that helped

yeah i think so after my goldfish died

my mom got me lizzy she's my pet lizard

but i'll never forget goldie my fish

oh well i don't think ben will ever

forget old dog either

i mean nothing can really replace a

really good old friend

yeah yeah lizzy

it's a good name for a lizard yup yup

well that was really a good story mr

avery

and it was about something that really

happened to the person who wrote it huh

right

gee so far i found out that you can make

up a story with your imagination

or you can remember something that

really happened to you

and write about it that's right that's

good kino

well i'll see ya i gotta go back to the

story place now

okay okay bye-bye take care

[Music]

the way you play with shadows and light

Peter Catalanotto

and

oh her expression just you can

feel her joy i i just love this painting

peter

thank you it's a favorite of chelsea's

oh

hi i'm back hi kino this is peter

catalinado

he's a painter and he wrote a book about

his own family and he's going to read it

to us

hey keena hi so how's your investigation

going

have you figured out some of the places

stories come from

oh yep yep you can make them up just

using your imagination

and you can write about things that

really happened to you well keno in my

book i did both

i wrote about my real life at home with

my daughter chelsea

and i imagined how she feels i wrote the

book as if she was telling the story

that's a painting of her from the book

[Music]

whoa cool and is that you in the

painting

yes but i shaved my beard off it's

called the painter

i wrote the story and painted the

pictures would you like to hear it

oh sure go ahead let's hear it yeah sit

down come on

okay here we go okay

my daddy's a painter he paints pictures

in his studio

[Music]

the painter by peter catalonado

every morning we make breakfast we're

very good cooks

[Music]

we love to read the comics and laugh so

hard we fall off our chair

silly says mommy funny says me

i ask daddy if we can go feed the ducks

not today

says daddy play hopscotch

not now says daddy do a puzzle

not yet says daddy then he goes up to

work in his studio

where i'm not allowed it's too dangerous

daddy says

you might get hurt

[Music]

at lunch i asked daddy what is he

painting

a car says daddy a blue one yesterday he

painted a butterfly

once it was a dalmatian

we love to dance after lunch we're very

good dancers

silly says mommy funny says me

i asked daddy if we can kick my ball

over the house again

not today says daddy fly our kite

not now says daddy make a tent

not yet says daddy then he goes back to

work in his studio

[Music]

at night it's my job to yell supper time

after supper daddy hangs a spoon on his

nose and turns lemons into apples

i do magic too i tell daddy i've lost my

hand

he looks everywhere for it i give up

says daddy

ta-da says me we're very good magicians

i asked daddy if we can do a puppet show

not now says daddy read a book

[Music]

not yet says daddy paint a picture

[Music]

not here says daddy

[Music]

here

[Music]

mommy loves my pictures she says it

looks like you'll be a painter when you

grow up

i say i'm a painter now

[Music]

it looks great too the end oh that was

really a good one peter

thank you oh it sounded just like your

little girl was telling the story

well i imagined how she would think and

feel

especially how she would feel when i'm

too busy to play with her

i know her pretty well and that helped

oh yeah

oh so keno do you think your

investigation on where

stories come from will help you write

your story for school

oh yep yep i'm gonna think about stuff

that's really happened to me

and i'm gonna use my imagination too oh

sounds like a good

plan reporter keno

[Laughter]

hey i have an idea

oh bye well i guess it's a good time to

do our story picks

the first one tells us how the famous

african tales about a nancy the spider

came to be

it says that long long ago there were no

stories for the children to hear

until a nancy the spider-man bought them

from niamey

the sky god it's called a story a story

and i think kino will really like this

one

it's called booby hatch and it's a true

story

a non-fiction story about a bird the

blue-footed boobie that only lives on

some

very special islands in the pacific

ocean betsy lewin who wrote and

illustrated the book

went to the islands and studied the

birds so she could write this story

and that's our story time for today

thank you for joining us peter

thank you and thank you for joining us

bye-bye bye-bye once

upon a time there was

a small green lizard

named lizzy

who always kept

a story in

her heart

[Music]

today's story time books are babushka

baba yaga

by patricia palacco the old dog

by charlotte zolato illustrated by james

ransom

the painter by peter catalanato

a story a story by gail e haley

and booby hatch by betsy lewin

you can find these and other books at

your local library

story time is made possible by a brand

from helen and peter b

so that families everywhere can share

the joy of reading with their children

[Music]

story time is production of kcet los
