fields of wheat

through the rain so cool and sweet

windshield wipers keeping time

lower gears to make the climb

up mountain roads

hairpin curves with eagle eyes and

steely nerves

tractors pull trailers full deadlines

must be met journeys end around the bend

gonna get there yet off the freeway

into town shifting shifting

shifting down

on every street and thoroughfare

trucks haul goods from here

to there city trucks

pretty trucks greasy grimy gritty trucks

armor trucks that carry cash

garbage trucks that carry crash

tuneful trucks with ice cream bars

[Music]

trucks for towing broken cars trucks

and more trucks on the go through heat

and rain and sleet

and snow

now up the street and past the light the

loading duck

comes into sight the workers wave as i

drive

blast

[Music]

then backing slowly to the dock i sign

my papers

check the clock unload my goods when i'm

done

brown it still needs a little more ah

okay what do you have there lucy oh i'm

making s'mores

that's uh marshmallow and chocolate and

graham crackers

whoa we want some too oh sure

now that it's really dark will you read

us some scary stories

did someone ask for a scary story oh we

did we did

well good because i brought one

and it's guaranteed to shake your bones

it's really scary you really want to

hear it yeah yeah sure

read it it's called the ghost

of nicholas grieb it's by tony johnston

with pictures by s d schindler did you

say

ghost uh-huh the ghost of nicholas grieb

if so you know i don't believe in ghosts

they don't exist

well good then uh you won't be scared

well many years ago

people did believe in ghosts they

thought that

ghosts were the spirits of people who

had died

and ghosts came to haunt the living when

something was bothering them

what's bothering old nicholas that's

what i'll ask you

after we read the story and remember

it's only a story

[Laughter]

all right

in colonial times quiet massachusetts

valleys

dark with trees threaded with rivers

and often cloaked in fog

gave rise to thoughts of the

supernatural

there among hidden hills tales of

haunts and ghosts abounded

tales such as this one

toward year's end above a rambling

farmhouse

the moon rose cold and still

it's shone through a window and onto the

bed within

where the farmer nicholas grieb lay

sleeping

in the luminous gloom precisely at

midnight

the old man gave up the ghost that is to

say

he died

the next day dawned exceedingly cold

unfortunately as we shall later see

his shivering family hurriedly dug a

grave buried him with a prayer

and hastened back to the warmth of the

fire

outside beneath pewter skies nicholas

grieb was left to rest

a headstone with an angel marked his

grave

one year later to the very day the

family gathered at the farm

everyone feasted and toasted the

departed man

in the midst of the festivities and by

peculiar coincidence at the very stroke

of 12

a little dog felt the desire to go

outside

as if by some mysterious plan the animal

trotted

straight to nicolas grebe's shallow

grave

he dug feverishly heaping a pile of

moon-silvered earth behind him

suddenly he found something thin and

hard

with knobby knobs on the ends the bone

of nicholas grebe

just as the dog started back with his

prize a carriage

stopped in the middle of the road while

the passengers are lighted to gaze at

the moon

the curious little dog scampered up to

the carriage climbed the steps

and slipped beneath a seat worn out from

digging

he fell asleep

presently the people returned the

carriage rumbled off

with passengers dog and bone

as they melted into the night something

luminous

and white arose from the grave of

nicolas greeb

it floated into the farmhouse

settled itself in a chair before the

fire

and lifted its voice in a resonant

moon from this

night forth i quest i quest

till all my burns together

rest

at once everyone stopped toasting and

began shrieking

they rushed to their carriages and

rattled away scattering down the dark

country lanes like leaves before wild

wind

only nicholas grieb's frightened widow

remained

and his unhappy ghost

the ghost began to haunt the farm

looking for the lost bone its restless

rambles

took it from one corner of the place to

another

sometimes something unseen

set hens fluttering upon their nests

sometimes something caused the lids

of the kitchen stove to rise

as if by levitation

sometimes an unearthly wind

whined in the corn and

ceaseless wailing filled the night

forevermore i quest i quest

till all my bones together

rest

while nicholas grieb's ghost searched in

vain the pilfered bone had begun a

remarkable

journey the mysterious carriage made for

boston

clattering straight to the wharf there

one of its passengers a sea captain

boarded a whaler

bound for the polar north and right

behind him

went the little dog holding fast to the

bone all the while

once aboard he sniffed a few sniffs

found a good spot and quickly hid his

treasure

[Music]

just as the whaler was departing the dog

sparked by the excitement

began dashing about the decks barking

great

smacking flukes cried a sailor oh sis

and he set the dog ashore so

the ship sailed but the dog remained

grieving for the bow

grieving like the ghost of nicholas

graves

month after cold month

passed the whaler cut through the

perilous waters of the horn

and sailed north ever north toward

alaska strangely on the entire voyage

not a trace of a single whale was seen

neither barnacle

nor blow bored as blubber

one sailor searched for something to

carve to pass the time

by oddest chance or was it

he came upon an object tucked into a

shadowy corner

something thin and hard with knobby

knobs on the ends

the bone of nicolas griebe

the sailor decorated the bone with the

scrimshaw ship a present for his

sweetheart when once again they met

but that was not to be for soon

after on a night ghostly with fog

the whaler struck an iceberg

like a stone

the very next day there came a fisherman

gliding

silently on a large ice floe

by a fantastic fluke he stopped

just where the ship had gone down flung

out his net

and along with a mess of shiny fish what

else should he retrieve

marvel of marvels

the bone of nicholas grieb

sorely in need of supplies he rushed to

a trading post and exchanged the bone

for goods so the bone came to rest

for the moment between bladder floats

and stacks of pelts

now all the time that the bone was

traveling

the ghost still haunted the farm

day and night night and day

and every year on the eve of the theft

settled itself before the fire once

again

forever i quest my quest

till all my burns

together rest

100 years passed this way

precisely 100 years

[Music]

on a night like that other night so long

ago

a great moon rose its pale light

washed the trees a spectral white

inside the farmhouse a family was

gathered the sun had returned to be

married

a sailor home from the sea from far off

alaska he had brought a satchel full of

gifts

which he set down by the hearth

just as the wedding began a little dog

snoozing by the fire awoke he sniffed a

few sniffs

made straight for the satchel and began

chewing happily

soon he had chewed the handle off

he trotted it outside dug a hole and

quickly buried his prize a thin

hard object adorned with a spidery

scrimshaw ship

and nubby knobs on the end bought at a

trading post for use as a handle

it had at last come home the bow

of nicholas

[Music]

suddenly from nowhere and from

everywhere at once

thunderclapped lightning forked and

flared

every lamp guttered as if blown by

bodyless breath then flapping

like an empty sleeve the ghost appeared

and declared this very hour

i end my quest my burns once

more together rest

and so saying it was gone

but this was not the end of the tale

not long afterward someone chanced to

stroll through the graveyard

and noticed something that to this day

goes utterly

unexplained the angel on nicolas grebe's

headstone

had vanished in its place

a little dog was carved in the stone

and in his mouth he held

[Music]

so what was bothering nicholas grieb

that the dog got the bone and the

ghost just wanted the bone back

i think it was bothering because his

bones weren't together

right were any of you scared no

no not at all no me neither well what do

you do you guys ever get scared

about anything sometimes yeah sometimes

at least

never you okay oh chelsea's very brave

that's why she's on the stump well um

what do you do when you're scared like

how do you get over it

what do you do chelsea if you're scared

i don't know anything can i just hurt

myself

under the pillow well that's a good idea

yeah i think that's very smart you know

that story would be pretty scary for

somebody who believes in

ghosts oh but not for someone like

keno right nope not for kino

cause ghosts aren't real my mom told me

that

just like monsters and bad dreams not

real

well you're right and you know it's just

a story

i know ghosts don't exist

are you getting sleepy it's getting

pretty late

no please read us one more book david

okay but i think we should say goodnight

with a funny book and i've got one right

over

here you know point your flashlight

at the pictures you can see them pop up

cool

a pop-up book uh-huh it's called the

wide-mouthed frog

it's by keith faulkner and it's

illustrated by jonathan

lambert hmm

ready i'm

a wide mouthed frog and i eat

floors except the wide mouth frog

sh**ting out his long sticky tongue

as he hopped along he met a blue

feathered bird

i'm a wide mouth frog and i eat

flies what do you eat bird

i eat the wriggly worms and slugs

replied the bird

snapping his pointy beak

next the wide mouth frog met a furry

brown mouse

i'm a wide-mouthed frog

and i eat flies said the wide mouth frog

what do you eat mouse i eat

crunchy seeds and juicy berries replied

the mouse

wiggling her whiskers

the wide mouth frog was still catching

flies when he saw a big

green alligator

a wild mouth frog and i eat

flies said the wide mouth frog what do

you eat

alligator i eat delicious

wide-mouthed frogs said the alligator

showing his sharp white teeth

the wide mouth frog stopped catching

flies and gold

then he puckered his lips and made his

mouth as small as possible

don't see many of them around here he

said and then he leaped

into the pond with a great splash

[Laughter]

that was good yeah i'll read it again

please read it again

oh sure oh okay

one more time but then we go to sleep

it's been an

exciting day i'm gonna dream that i'm

the wide mouth ghost

well you don't see too many of those

around here do you

no if you like scary tales

i recommend the banshee train about a

passenger train

saved from disaster by the ghosts

of an old train wreck oh and

i recommend the knight who was afraid of

the dark

he was brave he just didn't like the

dark

he thanks for coming camping with us

david

oh boy will come back soon for more

stories

and until then keep a story in your

heart

all right one more time
