time

first a song story about a fairy and her

friends

a fairy went to marketing she

bought a colored bird

it sang the swedish song that ever she

had heard

then david keith reads a story about a

man who didn't want to feel anything

what do you feel when you eat my pie ask

the baker

full said jack and thank you kindly

full cried the baker you don't feel like

you're in heaven with the smell and

taste so deliciously sweet

and last mole has to change how fox

feels about her house

fox says when the maple leaves turn red

and orange you'll have to move

said the raccoon and you better listen

to the fox because he's got big teeth

[Laughter]

moles snout quivered this was not good

news

[Music]

amazing i didn't know i had such a great

thought well

how about this plant can it tell you're

watering it

does that make it feel happy hmm i don't

know keno

although plants are alive i don't think

they have feelings the way we do

well do you think that it hurts a carrot

when you chew it up

is it saying ouch to itself hmm

i don't think a carrot knows whether or

not you're eating it

hmm well okay you're straightening up

those books right

yeah so do you think they like being

straightened up

or do you think they'd rather just stay

messy um

i'm sure they can't tell whether or not

they're neat or messy

hmm cause cause books were never alive

right right

but how about my dog he's happy when i

pet him isn't he

and he feels sad when i go away well i

would think so

dogs seem to have feelings and so do a

lot of other animals

i think like cats i think so

urge giraffes or walruses or ducks

uh-huh probably

even grasshoppers and worms um

gee i don't know about those those are

harder to say

i can change the way my dog feels i know

he's happy when i play catch with him

but if i stop

he makes little sad sounds you know like

then i feel sorry for him so i play

catch some more

well that's because you care about your

dog you

care about how he feels i know

i really do you know that reminds me of

a

wonderful book about a fairy who cares

very very deeply about all living things

would you like to hear it

oh sure okay well it's a story i like to

sing

you bet okay well here it is it's called

a fairy went to marketing she bought a

little fish

she put it in a crystal ball upon

a golden dish an

hour she sat in wonderment and watched

its

silver gleam and then she

gently took it up and slipped it in a

streak

a fairy went to marketing she

bought a colored bird

[Music]

she sat beside its painted cage and

listened half the day

and then she opened wide the door and

let it fly away

a fairy went to marketing she bought

a winter gal

all stitched about with the summer and

lined with this old down

she wore it all the afternoon with

prancing and delight

then gave it to a little frog to

keep him warm at night

a fairy went to marketing she

bought a gentle mouse

to take her tiny messages to

keep her tiny house

all day she kept its busy feet hit

patting

to and fro and then she

kissed its silken ears thanked it

and let it go and then she kissed its

silken ears

wow the fairy let everything go

that's right now why do you think she

did that

well i think because she thought about

how the fish would feel

being all cooped up in a bowl and

and how the bird would feel living in a

cage mm-hmm

and she thought they'd rather be free

right

she also thought that the frog would be

cold at night so she gave it her gown um

yeah she really cared about the frog too

here i am and i got two books and i got

two kids this is jonathan

and this is janelle hi jonathan janelle

please sit down

well keno and i have been talking about

feelings and we've been talking about

how most animals have them and

how most books and carrots don't right

you can see feelings and faces

like what am i feeling now

happy right yeah right

okay let me try one what am i feeling

now

sadness yeah sadness

really sad

oh no janelle what about you can you

make a face

like you're feeling angry

oh it's pretty good that's wow then how

about you

oh my gosh that was that was very fair

that was cool

i tell you what i brought a book about

feelings did you actually

it's a book about a guy that wanted to

stop having feelings

so he kept his heart in a bucket wow

want to hear about it yeah yeah yeah

okay

it's called the man who kept his heart

in a bucket

are really great in this one

are by jerry pinkney you ready

ready let's go in a little village

far away lived a man named jack who kept

his heart in a bucket

jack's heart had once been broken now he

kept it safe

jack worked with metals gold copper and

tin

he set out each day to find work taking

his heart long of course

[Music]

his first stop was the bakers you can

make me some new pans

said the baker and here's a piece of my

blackberry pie

jack ate the pie with berries

sweet and warm and firm

what do you feel when you eat my pie ask

the baker

full said jack and thank you kindly

full cried the baker you don't feel like

you're in heaven with smell and taste so

deliciously sweet

i feel full said jack and i must be on

my way

[Music]

by and by jack came to a piper with a

monkey

playing music that set children dancing

all along the street

you can make me a new ten cup for my

monkey to carry said the piper

in it we will collect coins for our keep

very well said jack and the piper played

a mazurka

so merry that all the old men tapped

their feet and the ladies

whirled in their skirts and the children

laughed with glee

don't you hear my music piper a*s jack

doesn't it make you want to dance

i hear your music jack replied for it's

very loud

but i have no time for dancing good day

on jack went until he came to a

farmhouse where a poor young couple

worked in the field

a tiny baby slept in a sling around the

mother's back

making soft sounds like a kitten

you can make us a swinging seat for our

baby said the father

so he can watch us while we work the

mother said

we have no money to pay you but we'll

give you garden carrots and potatoes and

let you hold the baby in your arms

i'll take your carrots and potatoes said

jack but let the baby be i

cannot hold little things that squirm

and cry

[Music]

by and by jack came to the lake i need

fresh water for my heart thought jack

bent to fill his bucket

alas as he dipped in the bucket

a large golden carp left out of the pool

at scales gleaming in the sun

that fish wants my heart jack thought

quickly jack reached in the bucket to

save his heart but

in that moment lo the carp turned into a

beautiful maiden

[Music]

as jack gazed at the maiden in wonder

she seized the heart and laughing danced

away with it

[Music]

what a silly man you are she called

keeping your heart in a bucket

give that heart back to me cry jack you

must catch

me first tease the maiden

thief cried jack come back don't you

know how to play call the maiden

i'll tell you a riddle and when you

solve it i shall give your heart

back to you very well said jack

the maiden clambered up into a tree and

told the riddle

if you would have this heart to hold

find

three different scales of gold when you

know the threefold treasure

you'll have love in perfect measure

with that the maiden ran away holding

jack's heart in her hands

jack went home that night he couldn't

sleep he

worried you wept he was afraid his heart

was gone forever

the next morning jack rose early and

worked

made pans for the baker tin cup for the

piper

and a swing for the poor farmer's baby

then into the furnace jack threw the

bucket that he kept his heart in

smoldering red hot fire burned the base

metals away

and the pure metal remained a small

round lump when jack reached in with his

tongs

and drew it out he beheld a small

perfect golden heart

jack put the little golden heart in his

pocket and he set out on the road

till he came to the baker and he gave

him his new pans

where's your heart ask the baker i see

you did not bring your bucket along

a beautiful maiden stole it said jack

and i must solve a riddle to win it back

poor jack said the baker have a piece of

my blackberry pie

[Music]

jack ate the pie and its sweet plump

lightness thrilled him

how wonderfully perfectly delectable and

delicious he said

thank you said the baker perhaps your

heart is in the right place

after all the baker measured out a small

loaf on his scale

and the metal gleamed like gold in the

morning sun

a golden scale cried jack clapping his

hands with joy

i've solved a piece of the riddle baker

you must come with me perhaps we'll need

your bread

the baker packed up a loaf of bread and

then he and jack went on

soon they came to the piper and jack

gave him the new cup for his monkey

where's your heart asked the piper you

do not have a bucket today

my heart's been stolen said jack but i'm

off to get it back

first said the piper take a time for a

little pleasure

i'll play for you

the piper played a jig well jack's feet

tickled and then they tapped

and jack and the baker danced arm and

arm

[Music]

what wonderful music said jack thank you

said the piper

your heart is in the right place now

the piper played a set of jumping

running notes up and down the scale

a golden musical scale cried jack

i've solved the second part of the

riddle piper you must come with us for

we might need your music jack

and the baker and the piper went on

until they came to the farmhouse

and jack gave the mother the new swing

for her baby

where's your heart ask the mother you

did not bring your bucket today

my heart is not far away said jack i

know

because i feel better than i've ever

felt before

the mother put the baby in the swing the

baby laughed and clapped his hands with

glee

jack laughed too and held at his arms

what a sweet little baby he said i'd

like to have one of my own

mother smiled and said your heart is

surely in the right place now

the baby's father came with a large

golden fish in his net

jack saw the bright scales on that fish

gleaming in the sun

here are the golden scales on the body

that fish jack said

now i know the third piece of the riddle

you must come with me for i need you all

dear friends

[Music]

the baker the piper the mother the

father and the baby

went with jack to the lake there under

an elm tree

stood the beautiful maiden waiting

ah there is the man with his heart in

the bucket he's the maiden

not so said jack my heart's in the right

place now

he smiled at the maiden and she blushed

but do you know the answer to my riddle

she asked

have you found the three different

scales of gold

i have said jack weight is measured on a

scale

the notes of music make a scale

and a fish has scales upon his tail

balance music and a fish

now lovely maiden grant my wish

and what is your wish ask the maiden

to win your heart said jack you've won

my heart already

said the maiden jack took the small

golden heart from his pocket

he and the maiden exchanged hearts and

as their hands met

the two hearts merged into one

take the golden heart said the maiden

and make two rings for you

and me wedding ring said jack

[Music]

let's eat said the baker let's make

music said the piper

let's dance said the mother and the

father

and the little baby laughed clapped his

hands and together

all of them celebrated love

[Music]

oh whoa that was a great story what

yeah it was i think it's better to it's

better to have a heart and

to have feelings isn't it yeah it sure

is

you know something tells me jack had his

heart all along

and then he carried that bucket to

protect himself and then when the maiden

took it away

then he could feel his heart again and

then he fell in love

yeah and that made him happy right yeah

boy

i think life would be awfully dull if we

didn't have all these special feelings

especially happy feelings

yeah yeah yeah you know feeling sad

or scared well those feelings are

important too

they're all part of our lives right yep

let me ask you a question

janelle can you name something that

makes you feel happy

a party a party yeah that's a good one a

sleepover party

oh like i like your birthday sleepover

party

hey that's a good one what makes you

happy

um the same thing when i when it's my

birthday

yeah it's your birthday yeah birthdays

are happy times all right

yep how about i i even still like him as

many of them as i did

how about something that makes you feel

frightened

if like a hamster gets loose in the

house

a hamster gets loose in the house or

under the couch

yeah yeah you get scared of the hamster

they won't really hurt you but

schedule oh you're afraid you'll you

won't find him oh

right yeah oh you know what i know

something that can be happy

sad and scary all at once a

rollercoaster ride

right yeah yeah i guess that's right

yeah

especially that moment when your stomach

feels like it's oh i love it

that's happy scary that's happy scary

can you think

is there anything that you can think of

that's scary jonathan

the my brother surprised me when he goes

on my back

when your brother surprises you by going

on your back yeah how does he do that

jumps on you

like when i'm walking um like down the

hall in my house

yeah he jumps on my back oh it scares

you

like that how old's your brother

10 10. oh he's a big guy what did you

guys think about

the story did you like it yeah

what was your favorite part um when the

man ate the blueberry pie and

realized that he liked it a lot yeah

yeah that it was really delicious you

know what blackberry pie as soon as i

was old enough to talk

i asked for a blackberry pie instead of

a cake on my birthday

did you still have it every birthday at

blackberry pie

what was your favorite part of the story

when he got his heart back

when he knew he really had it in the

right place yeah

yeah and he got his feelings back well i

know how

i feel right now i feel like another

well all right kino i just happen to

have one right here

all right it's about a mole who felt

unhappy cause all her little forest

friends wanted her to remove her house

and she didn't want to want to hear it

yes

called moles hill by lois ellert

it was dark in the woods but not

everyone was sleeping

the stars were out so was the fox

scratch scratch scratch fox knew that

sound

it was mold digging a tunnel

another hump of dirt snorlax why there's

a mole

there's a mess

digging tunnels is what the mold did

best

always on the lookout for a juicy worm

for breakfast

sound good but once in a while she took

a break and popped outside

and that's when she found this note

dear mo meet us tonight at the maple

tree

fox skunk and raccoon

when the sun went down mole hurried to

the meeting

we're planting a path to the pond said

the fox

and your hill is in the way it's got to

go

fox says when the maple leaves turn red

and orange you'll have to move

said the raccoon and you better listen

to the fox cause he's got big teeth

moles snout quivered this was not

good news

mo went home she didn't want to move she

left her home right where it was

suddenly she had an idea

some days later raccoon and skunk

strolled by moles hill

it looked bigger

[Music]

i wonder what that mole is up to raccoon

said

[Applause]

each night the mole kept digging and

digging dumping dirt on top of her hill

many moons passed

the hill grew bigger and bigger it was

time for the next step

[Music]

mole gathered seed she'd saved and

waited for the full moon

she climbed her hill planting the seeds

in the dirt as she went along

[Music]

soon flower seeds grew up

and burst into bloom

and the grass seeds inched up and made a

furry carpet

mole enjoyed her hill for the rest of

the summer

then one day the maple leaves turn red

and orange

just like that summer was over

raccoon and skunk had forgotten all

about mole so when fox sent them to see

if she'd moved

they were in for a big surprise

what a hill said raccoon what a pickle

said skunk

if we make mold move now she'll take

this great hill with her

fox was not gonna believe this

of course he didn't he had to see that

hill with his own two eyes

mole knew he'd come sooner or later and

she was waiting

fox circled moles hill and his four

furry feet

i've been thinking he said what we need

is a tunnel then our path could go

through your hill

can you dig it mo i can't

said mole and she did

what'd you think

yeah you liked it too yeah that was

great

so i guess making a mountain out of

mohill can be a good thing sometimes

sometimes it can absolutely she proves

it

yeah they all got what they wanted the

mole could stay in her house

and all the other animals got a path to

the pond yep

that's how you end up getting along with

people it's figuring out a way so

everybody ends up happy that's right

yeah

speaking of happy can you all show me

what the mole the fox the skunk and the

raccoon felt at the end of that story

can you show me with your faces

that's right they all felt happy they

sure did oh oh hey mara how about our
