what's the story amigos this is kino

with some cool stories for today's story

time

in our first story a little boy journeys

into the jungle and other exciting

places

[Laughter]

he wraps his arms around the snow

leopard's neck and they hurtle through

snow and ice then

jamie walters tells us about an animal

that will make anybody laugh

oh

the caveman cried which meant oh no stop

stop tell me that trickles

and kino and his friend peter visit the

zoo

the bear steered the cat sat the mole

rolled the dove shoved the ball

pulled and the yak whacked the grumple

lump

oh this is my favorite

oh this one's perfect

oh hi did you hear the kino's sick

i think he has some kind of flu the

doctor said he should stay in bed until

he gets well so

i was thinking i'd go visit him and read

him a story or two

would you like to come along and visit

kino with me

okay let's go

[Music]

ah

[Music]

well what do you know

poor kino is sick now you have to stay

in bed

all day long i wish something cool would

happen

hey gosh who's that i wonder

hi is keno feeling well enough to

receive visitors

oh hi lucy come on in i think he's

feeling a little better

he'll be so happy to see you

that's good will it be all right if i

read him some stories

oh say yes mom say yes say yes

oh sure that'll make him happy you know

where his bedroom is don't you

yes thanks great

oh hey lucy did you hear i'm sick

yes i know that's why i came to read to

you

well the doctor said get some rest and

drink lots of drinks till i get better

oh well i have the perfect story for you

perfect why oh you'll see

it's called going home by margaret wilde

and illustrated by wayne harris

hugo is in a small hospital right next

to the zoo

he's much better and wants to go home

soon says the doctor but how

soon is soon

cheer up it won't be long now says nurse

benny

come and play cards says simon in the

next bed

this is a really good show says nirmala

who watches tv all the time

[Music]

but hugo shakes his head and stares out

the window

right now mom will be putting on the

kettle and his little sister kathy will

be playing dress-up

and his fat cat lucy will be napping in

the sun

so hugo stares out the window listening

to the animal noises that float up from

the zoo

what a racket says nurse benny

but hugo's eyes widen because an

elephant is shrieking something special

a

message just for him

[Music]

come come home with me

shrieks the elephant so hugo puts on his

slippers

and goes he and the elephant amble

through african grasslands

where lions play rough and tumble games

and herds of wildebeest migrate across

the flames

when his family comes to visit mom asks

as usual

what have you been up to quite a lot

says hugo i went to africa

lucky you says mom

it's not fair says kathy i only went to

kindergarten

so hugo makes her a little paper

elephant with flappy ears

the next day while simon is building a

house out of cards and nirmala is still

watching tv hugo stares out the window

and listens again

[Music]

the elephant is silent but the howler

monkey is roaring

come come home with me

so hugo puts on his slippers and

goes

he and the howler monkey swing through

the treetops of the amazon jungle

where sloths sleep upside down

and the emerald tree boa hides in the

leaves

and two cans gobble berries

[Music]

when his family comes to visit mom asks

where did you go today quite

far says hugo i went to the amazon

jungle

lucky lucky you size mom

it's not fair says kathy i only went to

the corner shop

so hugo makes her a monkey puppet that

wiggles on her finger

[Music]

the next day after hugo has played cards

with simon

and watched a bit of tv with nirmala he

stares out the window

and very faintly he can hear the snow

leopard

growling

come come home

with me so hugo puts on his slippers

and goes

he wraps his arms around the snow

leopard's neck and they

hurtle through snow and ice

high in the himalayas where eagle-eyed

birds soar

above the slopes

[Music]

when his family comes to visit mom asks

been traveling again yes says hugo

i went to the himalayas kathy stamps her

foot

not fair i only went to the park

so hugo makes her a leopard mask

and she growls and shows her claws

[Music]

the next day when hugo is just about to

put on his slippers and leave for

india nurse benny says surprise

your mom and kathy are here you're going

home

come back and visit me says simon

i wish i were going home too says

nirmala

and she watches tv harder than ever

i'll tell you both a secret says hugo

and he whispers in their ears

that night when hugo is snuggled up in

his own bed in his

own house at last

nirmala and simon put on their slippers

and run with the tiger through the

forests of india

gee the boy in that story was sick just

like me huh

that's right but hugo was in the

hospital and you're not

he was tired of being in the hospital

and he wanted to go home

but but he was lucky i don't have a zoo

outside my window

hey i'd like to go to the zoo can we

lucy

well i'd be glad to take you to the zoo

but not right now

not until your mom says you can get up

and go outside

lucy when i'm not sick anymore then

you'll take me to the zoo huh

can i bring a friend sure i don't

like being sick i can't do anything

oh nobody likes it kino

but do you understand why you have to

stay in bed

well yeah i do it's so my body can get

some rest

and then i'll get better faster but i'm

much better now

really i think i'm ready to get up i've

already

gotten a lot of rest well let's see

oh it looks like your fever's all gone

oh good oh would you please hand me my

clothes over there

i'm gonna go play outside i don't think

so kino

you have to still stay in bed until your

mom says you can get up

no lucy could you get the door for me

please

oh sure thing kino will you excuse me

just a minute

oh yeah sure sure

oh well at least lucy's taking me to the

zoo as soon as i get better

i'm gonna rest real hard so i get better

quickly

oh oh by the way just stick around so

you can come to the zoo with us okay

kino look who's here hey whoa

hi peter hi jamie gosh how'd you guys

know that i was sick in bed huh

well we went by the story place and mara

told us

oh well i'm not really sick anymore

but i still have to get even better

before i can go to the zoo

let me tell you i'm not happy about

being sick

oh okay don't be grumpy peter

aren't you a little bit grumpy too when

you're sick

kind of yeah a little bit yeah me too

well i brought a book on how to not be

grumpy

should we read it oh okay and and i'll

rest real hard while you read it

well this is the tickle octopus and it's

written and illustrated by

audrey and don wood whoa

one morning about a million years ago

bug maw awakened with a bone in her nose

and a frown on her grumpy face

as usual she reached for ugg paw and

gave him a painful pinch

outpost sat up with a start

then he spat on the floor and fell back

to sleep

thus bup the cave boy awakened to

another

unhappy prehistoric day

bob had to do all of the chores by

himself

his older sister zerg had been carried

away by a saber-toothed tiger

his older brother hotrod had fallen into

the lair of a giant

cave bear and just yesterday

little nug bub's baby sister

vanished

and because they had lost all their

other children ugg maw and ugg paw were

determined to keep up

so before going out to hunt that day

they rolled a great

boulder in front of the cave so that the

wild animals couldn't get in

[Music]

they bellowed which meant bop stay

then they tromped away now bub hiked to

the pond at the back of the cave to

practice making

grim faces more than anything the cave

boy wanted to be just like his parents

when and if he ever grew up

but no matter how hard bub tried he

could never look as horrid as they

always did

argh he screamed a tear of frustration

rolled down his cheek and it flopped

into the pond

now the tear made an ever-widening

ripple

the pond began to froth and churn

and then out of the depths a strange new

animal emerged

the pinkish creature with wiggly arms it

didn't make a sound as it moved toward

the boy

[Music]

buck tried to run away

but the creature reached out and tickled

him under the chin

and it tickled his ribs and it tickled

his arms

the cape boy's face changed and a warm

glow

circled his heart something wondrous

began to happen

for the first time in the history of

people

someone smiled

and bob liked this new feeling he tucked

the animal into his pouch

and he squeezed past the boulder and he

went in search of his ill-tempered

parents

and before long he came upon his father

who was busy stalking

woolly mammoth

bob shouted which meant dad look what

i've got

look what i've got the cave boy shouts

frightened the timid woolly

and with a fearful bellow the mammoth

galloped away

[Music]

horrible grimace spread across a paws

angry face

a grimace so foul the two of his

teeth popped out of their sockets and

fell to the ground

the caveman reached for his son but bup

knew what to do

quickly he opened his pouch and he

released the creature

the caveman cried which meant oh no stop

stop tell me that trickles for the first

time

in the history of people

someone laughed

[Laughter]

and when ugg paul could laugh no more

bub stuffed the animal back into his

pouch

together the father and son set off to

find agma

before long they came upon the cave

woman picking berries down by the mud

slump

agma screamed when she saw her happy

family

fearing they were ill and possibly

contagious ugmod

jumped into the mud to save herself but

bup knew what to do

he opened his pouch and he released the

creature

cried which meant oh me yeah that

tickles

and i like it i like it the giggling

cave woman threw mud into the air and

slung in it

up and dug paw and for the first time in

the history of people

someone played

now when everyone was covered with mud

the creature jumped back into pub's

pouch

margwog his parents ash which meant

what is that thing and pop thought for a

minute

i eat omniga

he shouted which meant the tickle

octopus

smiling and laughing the family walked

on down the path

first they tickled the cranky tribe that

lived by the volcano

[Music]

then they tickled a scowling girl who

had tamed a saber-toothed tiger

now she turned out to be buff's older

sister zerg

and then they tickled a growling boy

wore the skin of a giant cave bear he

they discovered

was bupp's older brother hoe tried and

finally they tickled a pouting little

baby

they found beneath a banana leaf

log let me get ep noggy

they cheered which meant gnog we found

our little nuggie

bub's baby sister had simply been

misplaced

at last ugg maw of paw

zerg hotrod bup nug

and the tickle octopus returned to their

cave to celebrate

that evening everyone stayed up late

smiling and laughing and playing

[Music]

today about a million years later

times have changed people no longer live

in caves

and many of the animals that roam the

earth in the days of buff

are extinct there are no more

saber-toothed tigers

giant cave bears or woolly mammoths

and sad to say

tickle octopus is gone too

[Applause]

or

i'm gonna look for the tickle octopus

when we go to the zoo

cause i don't like to be grumpy even

when i'm sick

well it's better to laugh and smile

right peter

yeah by the way i don't think you guys

are gonna find the tickle octopus at the

zoo

why well he's a pretend animal that only

exists in this story

but you're gonna see lots of other

animals and you can pick out ones that

are your favorites

oh my favorite is the chimpanzee well

what's your favorite animal peter

the zebra is it yeah zebras are really

cool

and what animals make you laugh like the

tickle octopus did in the story

[Music]

are you tired kino oh well

only a little bit see lucy can peter

come with us to the zoo

oh peter would you like to come we'll

say yes say yes

yes good oh that's great

well i think we'd better go now but when

you feel better

we'll come by and we'll pick you up and

we'll go to the zoo okay

well let's sit down here and rest for a

few minutes

you know when you've been sick it's

natural to have a little less energy

but they have your favorite animals the

chimpanzees

oh yeah they sure do

and did you see any animals that you

like peter

which ones did you like the lions yeah

the lions

the alliance are cool aren't they huh

you know

i happen to know that lucy has a book in

her bag

that's also about a something

that sounds just like an animal keno

maybe you could read it to us

yeah sure you know it also has a bear

and an armadillo

and other animals too would you like me

yeah okay okay what's it called well

it's called the grumpa lump and sarah

hayes wrote it

the bear stared at the grumpa lump

the lump grunt

the bear stared and the cat sat

on the grumple lump

the lump grumped

the bear stared the cat sat and the mole

rolled

on the grumplum the lump

grumped

the bear stared the cat sat the mole

rolled and the dove shoved the grumpa

lump

the lump still grumped

bumps

bits and bobs and interesting knobs and

wings and things attached with strings

and still the new blue

then to everyone's surprise

the grumpa lump began to rise

[Music]

the new drew breath and clambered in

the grumpa lump began to grin i'm

off on a trip in my hot air ship

said the new and flu

absolutely true

and how the bear stared

[Music]

and that's the end of the story of the

grumpa lump

what'd you think of it peter did you

like it yeah yeah

good so what is the grumpalum

it's not an animal right guys no

but but peter why do you think it was

grumpy

because all the animals around it yeah

maybe so

yeah cause the animals were jumping on

it huh

i think all that air going into the

balloon

made the grumpy noise but but it wasn't

a grumpy animal

okay all these books about animals

real and pretend ones yeah and we have
