what's the story amigos

this is kino with some cool stories for

today's story time

first it's a song about a frog who

dreams of getting married

oh mistress mouse are you within yes

kind frog i sit to spin

[Music]

then angela bassett reads about uncle

jed who worked very hard to make his

dream come

true he would pick me up

and sit me in his lap and tell me about

the

barbershop he was going to open one day

i wonder if the astronauts had this much

trouble walking on the moon

these space boots are tricky

uh hello mission control this is

astronaut kino

over a roger mission control

the time capsule is almost full

oh my goodness keno is that you

yep yep i'm playing astronaut which is

what i want to be when i grow up

an astronaut i'm gonna walk on the moon

and go to mars and everything

and i'm gonna have a real space suit wow

that sounds really exciting kino

uh what's all this stuff in the shoe box

are you packing your outer space

suitcase already

oh no mara this is this is an outer

space

time capsule i read about it in a book i

have about rockets and stuff

well what is an outer space-time capsule

oh well you see when you send a rocket

into outer space

you can go zillions and zillions of

miles way far away into the stars

well someday a space creature from

another planet

could be driving along in a spaceship

and he could just happen to find our

rocket

whoa and then what well then when the

space creature looked inside our rocket

he'd find the outer space time capsule

it's a box

that has important special things in it

things that show what life is like on

earth

you mean things that show what our world

looks like and

what human beings are and what we do yep

and this is my outer space time capsule

so far

it has a book in it about animals and a

picture of me and my dog

oh and my soccer ball because soccer is

a pretty

important thing on earth oh and and my

teddy bear cause

he wanted to go into outer space oh

so a space creature could look inside

your outer space-time capsule

and find out about earth and animals and

what people look like and a game we like

to play

and even about your teddy bear huh

uh-huh

can you think of anything else i ought

to put in there you know

stuff that really tells about what it's

like on earth

hey keno what about music yeah

music's very important on earth well

people have been singing and playing

music for thousands of years and i think

they always will don't you

gee you're right mara gosh

maybe we could maybe we could put a

guitar in there

or a trumpet except i don't have a

guitar or a trumpet

and i don't think a space creature know

how to play him anyway

you know he'd probably try to strum the

trumpet and blow into the guitar

wait a minute kino i have a book

that has a very very old song in it

well my grandmother sang this song to me

and i wouldn't be surprised if her

grandmother sang it to her when she was

little

it's hundreds of years old gee that'd be

perfect for my

time capsule anything that's lasted that

long must be pretty cool

what's it called it's called frog when a

corten and for this book john langstaff

wrote the words

and the pictures are by theodore

he rode right up to mouse

without my uncle rat's consent i would

not

marry the president

okay you're catching mine then uncle

rat he soon comes home

who's been here since i've been gone

[Music]

a pretty little dandy manchester he says

he wants to marry me

where will the wedding breakfast be

weighed on yonder in a hollow tree

[Music]

what will the wedding breakfast be three

green beans and a black-eyed pea

[Music]

who will make the wedding gown

[Music]

old miss rat from

[Music]

you're gonna help me out now sure all

right the first to come in was a little

white mom

to spread on the tablecloth next to come

in was a big black bug

on his back was a cider jug mesa coming

in was mr

[Music]

next to come in was a white snake

passing around the wedding cake

next to come in was a bumblebee a banjo

buckled on his knee next to common was a

nimble feet to dance a jig for the

bumble bee

[Music]

next to come in was the old grey goose

she picked up her fiddle and she

cut loose next to come in were two

little ants

fixing round to have a dance next to

come in was a little old fly he ate up

all the wedding pies

was a little chick he ate so much it

made him sick

the last to come in was the old tom cat

he says i'll put a stop to that

wow

[Music]

frogs bridle and saddle are laid on the

shelf if you want anymore you must sing

it yourself

wow man that was a cool song maura

you're an awesome singer thank you kino

so are you

oh thanks hey if we put that book in my

outer space time capsule

do you think a space creature would be

able to read the music on the last page

i know when i first saw music notes so

they didn't make much sense to me

that is a very good question kino

i don't know well let's see this is how

we write music down

here see frog went a court

and he did write

[Music]

yeah but i think a space creature might

have a little trouble figuring this out

i know oh why don't we put a tape of the

music in my time capsule too

and then maybe the space creature could

listen to the music too

that is a good idea kino frog went

according he derided

frog went according he did ride him

hi angela hi mara hi kino hi

hey christopher hi molly hi hi i know

frog went according to my grandma used

to sing it to me

oh really well so did mara's hey mara

come on let's go over there

come on you know i think some songs like

that are handed down from grown-ups to

kids for years and years and years

story story it's out of this world

it's perfect for my outer space time

capsule

what well kino wants to be an astronaut

so he

is making an outer space time capsule

for a spaceship

we're filling it with things that show

what life is like on earth oh that is

wonderful wow kino do you really want to

be an astronaut when you grow up

oh yep yep i've been reading books about

it and everything

my mom made this this space suit for me

see

i even dream about being an astronaut

you do

yeah oh my goodness you must really want

to be an astronaut very very very much

uh-huh how about you molly and

christopher what do you dream of being

one day

i think i want to be a mail carrier you

do

a meal carrier carry and christopher i

think i want to be a coast guard

in the coast guard so like you'd be in

in a ship sailing on the ocean yes wow

cool that's great guys do you think hard

dreams about being an

astronaut and a and a male carrier and

and being in the coast guard will come

true oh

yes i agree with you molly i also think

that all your dreams can come true but

it's really up to you isn't it

if you're patient and you work really

really really hard to make your dreams

come true

they can well i'm working hard at it and

i'm gonna

keep working hard at it oh that's great

well keno

i have a wonderful book here about a man

who was very patient

and who worked very very very hard to

make his dream come true

would you like to hear it oh sure how

about you guys

yeah yeah we all want to hear it great

it's called uncle jed's barber shop and

it was written by marguerite

king mitchell and james ransom drew the

pictures

okay come close

jedediah johnson was my granddaddy's

brother

everybody has their favorite relative

well

uncle jedediah was mine

[Music]

he used to come by our house every

wednesday night with his clippers

he was the only black barber in the

county

daddy said that before uncle jed start

cutting hair

he and granddaddy used to have to go 30

miles

just to get a haircut

after uncle jed cut my daddy's hair

he'd lather a short brush with soap

and spread it over my daddy's face and

shaved him

then he started over on granddaddy

i always asked my uncle jed to cut my

hair

but mama wouldn't let him so he would

run the clippers on the back of my neck

and just pretend to cut my hair

he even spread lotion on my neck and i

would smell wonderful all day

when he was done he would pick me up

and sit me in his lap and tell me about

the barbershop he was going to open one

day

and about all the fancy equipment that

would be in it

the sinks would be so shiny they

sparkled

the floors so clean you could see

yourself

he was going to have four barber chairs

and outside was going to be a big tall

red and white barber pole he told me he

was saving up for it

[Music]

he had been saying the same thing for

years

nobody believed him people didn't have

dreams like that in those days we lived

in the south

most people were poor my daddy owned a

few acres of land

and so did a few others but most people

were sharecroppers that meant that they

lived in a shack

and worked somebody else's land in

exchange

for a share of the crop

when i was five years old i got sick

this particular morning i didn't come

into the kitchen while mama was fixing

breakfast

mama and daddy couldn't wake me up my

nightgown

and the bed clothes were all wet where i

had

sweated

[Music]

mama wrapped me in a blanket while daddy

went outside and hitched the horse to

the wagon

[Music]

we had to travel about 20 miles

into town to the hospital it was midday

when we got there

we had to go to the colored waiting room

in those days they kept blacks and

whites separate

there were separate public restrooms

separate water fountains

separate schools it was called

segregation

so in the hospital we had to go to the

colored waiting room

even though i was unconscious the

doctors wouldn't look at me until they

had finished with

all the white patients when the doctors

did examine me

they told my daddy that i needed an

operation and that it would cost

300

300 was a lot of money in those days

my daddy didn't have that kind of money

and the doctors wouldn't do the

operation until they had the money

my mama bundled me back up in the

blanket

he took me home

mama held me in her arms all night

she kept me alive until daddy found

uncle jed

he found him early the next morning

and the next county on his way to cut

somebody's hair

daddy told him about me uncle jed

leaned on his bent cane and stared

straight ahead

he told daddy that the money didn't

matter

he couldn't let anything happen to his

sarah jean

[Music]

well i had the operation

for a long time after that uncle jed

came by the house

every day just to see how i was doing

i know that 300 delayed him from opening

the barbershop

uncle jed came awfully close to opening

his shop

a few years after my operation he had

saved enough money to buy the land

and build the building but he still

needed the money for the equipment

anyway uncle jedi come by the house

we had just finished suffer when there

was a knock

on the door it was mr ernest walters

a friend of uncle jazz he'd come by to

tell

uncle jed about the bank failing

that was where mr walters and uncle jed

had their money

uncle jed had over three thousand

dollars in the bank

and it was gone uncle jed

stood there for a long time

before he said anything

then he told mr walters that even though

he

was disappointed he would just have to

start

all over again

talk about some hard times

that was the beginning of the great

depression

nobody had much money then

but uncle jed kept going around to his

customers cutting their hair even though

they couldn't pan

his customers shared with him whatever

they had

a hot meal fresh eggs

vegetables from the garden and when they

were

able to pay him they did

and uncle jed starred safe all

over again

oh uncle jed finally got his barbershop

he opened it on his 79th birthday

[Music]

it had everything just like he said

it would big comfortable chairs

four cutting stations you name it

the floors were so clean they sparkled

on opening day people came from

all over the county they were old uncle

jed's customers

he had walked to see them for so many

years

that day they all came to him

[Music]

i believe he cut hair all night

and all the next day and the next night

and the day after that that man was so

glad to have that shop

he didn't need any sleep well of course

i was there too

i wouldn't have missed it for the world

when i sat in one of the big barber

chairs

uncle jed patted the back of my neck

with lotion like he always did

then he twirled me round and

round

[Music]

uncle jed died not long after that

i think he died a happy man

you see he made his dream come true

even when nobody else believed in it

he taught me to dream too

end wow

was it easy for uncle jed to get his

barbershop to make his dream come true

no why not what made it so hard

um the saving money

and yes all the stuff that i had

to do and um the wobbling at the

banks the bank lost the money

so he had to start all over yes then he

had to use his money for

all other things like what he had to use

it for the little girl for her

operation and he had to do it for

all these people and um

to get his land and also to get

shopping not enough to get the equipment

to get the equipment

yeah i was kind of sad some of the time

because

the people the people in the hospital

wouldn't help the little girl

it really surprised me it was very sad

that's what i really

hated in the olden days that

whites and blacks had to be separated

and whenever they didn't have to be

separated the whites would always go

first

yeah that's what happened in the story

and then um

the sky came and he had

a law that white people

and black people don't have to be

subpoenaed

they could go to the same school oh

that's that's good too i know there were

a lot of things in the past that weren't

very nice

in the old days when people got on the

bus and the white

people and the black people got on the

bus and there were black people sitting

down

and there was no more seats and the

white got on

the black people would have to get up so

the white

people could sit down was that fair no

no no not at all

i think we can all do our part to make

things better don't you think

like recycling you're like recycling

yeah

and like doing our best just to be fair

to be nice to everybody

how about that and that wouldn't even be

president

[Laughter]

and and you know another thing it took a

really really long

time for uncle jed's dream to come true

because

i noticed that at the end of the story

the little girl is all grown up

oh you're right i know look here see

here she's an uncle jed's barber chair

and she's a grown-up lady isn't she

yeah uncle jed never gave up at all did

he

no he didn't he didn't give up on his

dream at all

and neither should we right never

yeah and when i get to be an astronaut

that'll be the best day of all

that's right you stay with it keno it

could happen

you know in this book there is a

wonderful poem

about making dreams come true this book

is called

meet denitra brown and nikki grimes

wrote the poems and it was illustrated

by floyd cooper

i want to read this poem to you it's

called stories to tell

let's hear it denitra says

she's gonna win the nobel prize

and i can tell by looking in her eyes

how much she needs it

i see her writing rhymes and stories in

a book

she slips a page to me and lets me look

like it's our secret she writes about

our friends

our neighborhood and me the places that

will go and what will be when we all

grow up some teachers say denitra's

rhymes are

wrong because some of her lines are

extra long

i think they're perfect if denitra says

she's gonna win the nobel prize i

double dare anyone to roll his eyes

i know she'll do it

hmm oh that was good mara hey

i got an idea maybe i ought to put that

in my outer space time capsule too

it doesn't have any poems in it yet that

is a good idea kino

you know i think that any space creature

that finds your time capsule will enjoy

this poem

very much uh this is kino calling

mission control the outer space time

capsule

well i'm ready to launch our story picks
