with some cool stories for today's story

time

today many kinds of animals in a fun

story

is your mama a llama i asked my friend

no she is not is what freddy said

she has a long neck and white feathers

and wings

i don't think a llama has all those

things

then jane seymour reads a mysterious

story from the pacific northwest

the chief turned to him and said

we are glad that the storm has brought

you to our village

but now you are thinking of your own

and meet a monkey in trouble he's the

one i

want the crocodile said to himself

but how am i going to catch you

[Music]

oh you're doing an excellent job

wow pretty good hasn't it yes hey

what are you doing a family tree oh my

family's got lots of trees in our

backyard

not exactly that kind of family tree

well

what kind of family tree then well on a

piece of paper

you draw a small branch for everyone in

your family that you can find out about

and then it

sort of grows like the branches of a

tree see

i'm in the middle my mom and dad are the

big branches and then

come the grandparents and the higher you

go up in the tree the hotter it gets

because the branches are for the parents

my grandparents and their brothers and

sisters

and people i don't even know but they're

still my family mm-hmm

so it gets harder just like climbing a

real tree

yeah right but the beginning is easy

because it's your mom and dad

oh hey that reminds me about this book

that my teacher read to us when i was in

kindergarten

about a llama who didn't know who her

mom was

oh do you have it is it good i think i

have it over there somewhere do you want

to read it

yes yeah sure yeah yeah gosh i'd like to

do one of those for my family too

well then why don't you it isn't that

hard i'm doing mine for a school project

i will i'll do it as soon as lucy reads

us this story

no she is not is the answer dave gave

she hangs by her feet and she lives in a

cave

i do not believe that's how llamas

behave

oh i said you are right about that

i think that your mama sounds more like

a bat

oh i said you don't need to go on

i think that your mama must be

uh

no she is not jane politely explained

she grazes on grass and she likes to say

moo i don't think that is what a llama

would do

oh i said i understand now

i think that your mama must be a

cow

is your mama a llama i asked my friend

clyde no

she's not is how clyde replied

she's got flippers and whiskers and eats

fish all day

i do not think llamas act quite that way

oh i said i'm beginning to feel

that your mama must really be a

seal is your mama a llama i asked my

friend rhonda

no she is not it's how rhonda responded

she's got big hind legs and a pocket for

me

so i don't think a llama is what she

could be

oh i said that is certainly true

i think that your mama's uh

is your mama a llama i asked my friend

oh loy don't be silly lin said with a

grin

my mama has big ears long lashes

and fur and you of all people

should know about her our mamas belong

to the same herd

and you know all about llamas

cause you are one too

yes you are right i said to my friend

my mamas are

llama and this

is

you know what now i'm thinking that the

llama knew who her mom was

all alone well do you think that maybe

she wanted to play with her friends

yup yup that's what i think mm-hmm now

she wants to know about a grandmama

llama

and a great grandma llama and that's

when a family tree comes in handy

hi we're here

kevin was working on his family tree and

i'm gonna do one

too do you have a large family kevin

yeah

i know it's this big and they've only

made branches back to the appearance of

my grandparents

well how about you jane how big is your

family well i have a mom

and i have six children two of which are

step-children

and i have two sisters and so many

uncles and aunts i couldn't even count

how about you sydney tell us about your

family i have

lots of aunts and uncles i have

um a stepbrother

i have um three cats

i have um a lot of dogs

and i have a mom and dad and

that's it how about you montana um

i have two cats

one that lives with me and one that

lives with my mom i have my mom

my dad i have two grandmas

and grandpas and i have a brother and a

sister

and dogs and cats are members of

families too right there's so many

different kinds of families

yeah and all different sizes and

different kinds of family trees

and i brought this story about the son

of a chief

who's from a native american family who

lived by the ocean

would you like me to read it yeah yeah

sure go ahead

it's called stormboy by paul owen lewis

a chief's son went fishing alone

and a terrible storm the rose

he soon found himself washed ashore

under a strange sky that he had never

seen before

there was a village there the houses

the canoes and even the people were very

large

i am a chief son and i am lost

a storm has brought me to you said boy

we know this you are

welcome son of a chief from above

said one who appeared like a chief

himself

and together they entered the largest

house of all

[Music]

inside the house was crowded with finely

dressed people enjoying a feast

they gave him a blanket to wear and a

fish to eat

but the fish was not cut up or cooked

strange too on the walls all around were

what looked like

k*ller whales

after they finished eating the chief

said to the others

let us sing a welcome song and invite

our guest

to join in the dance of our people

you are welcome

you are welcome son

of a chief from above

the boy and his hosts began to dance

around the fire together

to the steady beat of the drums

[Music]

he matched them step for step

[Music]

and the chief smiled when he saw that

the boy had so quickly learnt their

dance

in return the boy offered to teach the

songs and dances of his own people

the chief was delighted and now followed

the boys lead

the celebration went on this way for

many long hours

[Music]

the boy and his new friends each

learning from the other

but though the boy was enjoying himself

he began to think more and more of home

with each song he sang

he missed his father and mother and

wondered if he would ever find his way

back to them again

[Music]

suddenly the drumming and the dancing

stopped

the chief turned to him and said

we are glad that the storm has brought

you to our village

but now you are thinking of your own

when you wish to return he continued

grip my staff tightly and stand

behind me close your eyes

and think of your own home wishing to be

there

only the boy did as he was told

he took the staff and stepped behind the

chief

closing his eyes he pictured his father

and mother his house and the people of

his village

as he did the boy felt a great surge

beneath him

as if he were being carried upward at

greater and greater speed

he kept his eyes closed and held on

tight

the motion stopped and the boy opened

his eyes

there he was lying on the beach in front

of his very own village

my son cried his mother

where have you been we thought you were

lost in a storm a year ago

i was lost in a storm but it was only

yesterday

exclaimed the boy but a year's time had

indeed passed since he had disappeared

in the storm

that night the whole village celebrated

his return

and marveled at the boys he danced with

the staff

and told of the large and mysterious

people

under the strange sky

the end oh wow

that was great but but i have a question

about this book

ask away well who are they

the ones who saved the storm boy do you

know who they are

[Music]

i think the answer lies in the pictures

you see here when the boy fell in the

water do you see all those fins

oh yeah yeah and then of course they

were eating

uncooked fish hmm well

they weren't really people then were

they

maybe they're kind of like whales real

people like

half whale half monkey and half person

what about the costumes that they kept

on the wall

they were k*ller whale people and they

took care of the boy i bet his family

was what were when he was gone

well remember he was gone for a whole

year

that's what the family thought but for

him it was just a day

gosh i wonder what his family tree

looked like you know

he was a son of a chief and stuff i

wonder what a k*ller whale family tree

will look like

hey can i put my family tree up on the

storyboard

oh sure oh okay come on kevin let's go

oh sydney you brought a book may i see

it

yeah it's the monkey and the crocodile

oh

that's a good one

hey kevin who's this on this little

branch up here

oh that's my great great impala i made

her brand small

both lots of leaves because she was

small but very very smart

oh we could read the book that sydney

brought

it's about a small monkey who's pretty

smart

oh yeah come on come on let's go

hey my family tree looks pretty good

from here huh oh

yeah and you know i'm gonna make one too

well all right this

is a story about the monkey and the

crocodile and it's by paul galdone

and it's an old tale from india

beside a river in the jungle stood a

tall mango tree

and in the tree lived many monkeys they

swung

from branch to branch eating fruit and

chattering to each other

hungry crocodiles swam in the river

and sunned themselves on the banks

[Music]

one young crocodile was hungrier than

all the rest

he could never get enough to eat the

young crocodile watched the monkeys for

a long time

then one day he said to a wise old

crocodile

i'd like to catch a

monkey and eat

him how would you

ever catch a monkey ask the old

crocodile

you do not travel on land and monkeys do

not go into water

besides they are quicker than you are

they may be quicker

said the young crocodile but i

am more cunning

you will see

for days the crocodile swam back and

forth studying the monkeys all the while

then he noticed one young monkey who was

quicker than all the others

this monkey loved to jump to the highest

branches of the tree

and pick the right mangoes at the very

top

he's the one i want the crocodile said

to himself

but hmm am i going to catch

the crocodile thought and thought

and at last he had an idea

monkey he called wouldn't you like to

come with me over to the

island where the fruit is so

right oh yes said the monkey

but how can i go with you i do not swim

i will take you on my back

said the crocodile with a toothy smile

uh-oh the monkey

was so eager to get to the fruit so he

jumped down onto the crocodile's back

off we go said the crocodile

gliding through the water

this is a fine ride you're giving me

said the monkey

do you think so well

how do you like this

ask the crocodile and suddenly

he dived down into the water oh

please don't cried the monkey as he went

under he was afraid to let go

and and he didn't know what to do when

the crocodile came up

the monkey sputtered and choked

why did you take me under the water

crocodile

he asked you know i can't swim

because i am going to

drown you replied the crocodile

and then i am going to

eat you the monkey

shivered in fear but he thought quickly

and before the crocodile dived again he

said i wish you told me you wanted to

eat me

if if i'd known that i would have

brought my heart

your heart

said the crocodile yes it's the tastiest

part of me

no but i left it behind in a tree

well then we must go back and get it so

the crocodile turning around

but we're so near the island said the

monkey please

take me there first no

said the crocodile first i am

taking you straight to your

tree you will

get your heart and bring it to me

at once then we will see about going

to the island

very well said the monkey and the

crocodile headed back to the riverbank

no sooner did the monkey jump onto the

bank then up he swung into the tree

from the highest branch he called down

to the crocodile

my heart is way up here if you wanted

comfort comfrey and he loved

and loved while the crocodile thrashed

his tail in

anger

that night the monkey moved far down

river from the mango tree

he wanted to get away from the crocodile

so he could live in peace

but the crocodile was still determined

to catch him

he searched and searched and

finally he found the monkey living in

another tree

here a large rock rose out of the water

halfway between the monkey's new home

and the island the crocodile

watched the monkey jumping from the

riverbank

to the rock and then to the island where

the fruit trees were

monkey will stay on the island

all day the crocodile thought to himself

and i'll catch him

on his way home tonight

the monkey had a fine feast and while

the crocodile swam about

watching him all day toward night

the crocodile crawled out of the water

and lay on the rock

perfectly still

when it grew dark among the trees

the monkeys started for home he ran down

to the riverbank

and there he stopped what is the matter

with the rock

the monkey wondered i never saw it so

high before

something must be lying on it the monkey

went to the water's edge and called

hello rock no answer

he called again hello rock

still no answer three times the monkey

called

and then he said why is it friend rock

that you do not answer me tonight

oh said the crocodile to himself

the rock must talk to the monkey at

night

i'll have to answer for the rock this

time

so he answered yes

monkey what is it

the monkey loved and said

it's you crocodile is it

yes sir the crocodile i am waiting here

for you

and i am going to eat

you up

you have certainly caught me this time

said the monkey

sounding afraid there is no other way

for me to go home

well open your mouth white so i can jump

right into it

now the monkey knew very well that when

crocodiles open their mouths wide

they shut their eyes so while the

crocodile lay on the rock with his mouth

open

and his eyes shut the monkey jumped

but not into his mouth he landed on top

of the crocodile's head

and then sprang quickly to the riverbank

up he ran into his tree and when the

crocodile saw the trick the monkey had

played on him he said

monkey i thought i was

cunning but you

are much more cunning than i and

you know no fear

i will leave you alone after this

thank you crocodile said the monkey but

i shall be on the watch for you

just the same and so he was

and the crocodile never

never caught him the end

yeah the crocodile never catch that

monkey cause the monkey is so

smart well the crocodile thought he was

smart

but the monkey was smarter yeah the

crocodile

thought he was smart but he was dumb

what do you think was the dumbest thing

that crocodile did

[Music]

and and what do you guys think was the

dumbest thing the crocodile did

uh open his mouth and close his eyes

but he couldn't help big could he

because he's a crocodile and when you

open your mouth

your eyes get closed i think the dumbest

part was

at the rock you didn't know that um

the rock talked to him every night

well it wasn't really the dumbest part

but he didn't know it so he felt like

what am i gonna do i think only somebody

really slow would fall for that i

left my heart up in the tree trick he

did

have big teeth though if i was the

crocodile

i used my teeth to chop down the tree

and then i'd eat the monkey

and if i were the monkey i jumped to

another tree

before you chopped it down you are one

very smart monkey well i

said if i were a monkey which i am not

but you do like to climb trees oh well

yes i do oh and speaking of trees

this would be a great time to start my

family tree

but before you go let's do our story

this book

is about a large family and their

unusual grandmother

it's not my turn to look for grandma oh

and

and kevin and i like this one it's

the toll bridge troll it's about a

pretty sharp boy

and just like us right oh yeah right and

he uses his brain to
