to help reimagine them
to serve this community again,
just in a different way.

Explain how we got here.
Start at the beginning.
Yeah. Okay. The beginning.

JEREMY: Since I was a kid,
I've always loved to build,
whether it was forts, bikes, go-karts.
I just love to create.
As I got older, my passion
for building turned into huge vehicles.
-This is amazing! Look at this thing.

JEREMY: I got a lot of them. Fire trucks,
city buses, semitrailers.
MALE VOICE: Which ones are his?
RORY: They're all his.
He said he bought two.
JEREMY: I saw really good machines
being discarded,
sold off when I knew
they still had a lot of life.
But I knew they could serve
a higher purpose.
I decided to reimagine, repurpose,
and renovate these vehicles.
Out here in the fields
JEREMY: I wanted to turn these vehicles
into something incredible.
...my meals
JEREMY: And I wanted to do it
for communities...

...and for kids all over the world.

So I teamed up with four organizations
that help kids in need,
based in four different communities
spread across the planet.
So, for each community,
I rebuilt an old vehicle
and gave it a new purpose
to help each organization
fulfill their mission.
We're going to change this truck
into a water filtration truck.
A mobile dance studio.
A music studio bus.
A mobile rec center.
Then I gave them
the re-imagined vehicles.
Yes, yes. Yes, I love that.
-I was still talking.
-RORY: What?
JEREMY: I also brought along some talented
and familiar friends
to help me deliver them.
Sally, take my hand
We'll travel...
JEREMY: To do the work, I assembled
a rockstar team of builders.
How long do we have
to build this one, Jeremy?
Yeah, we got two,
three weeks on this thing.

JEREMY: And finally, I needed a co-pilot
on this global journey.
And that's where Rory comes in.

back in the 1940s in the Punjab.
He used to live here.

ANIL: You know, I have been working
in films in India since last 45 years.
Absolutely right!
I did Slumdog Millionaire,
which got a lot of love.
Then I did 24. I met Jeremy in Dubai
for the sh**ting of Mission: Impossible 4.
You know, he's so generous,
which is I think the hallmark
of a good human and a good actor.
JEREMY: So to give you a little backstory
on how this has all come about.
I didn't like perfectly good machines
being decommissioned by governments.
So I started acquiring a lot
of city buses
and shuttle buses, fire trucks,
emergency vehicles,
you know, things like that.
-Really?
-JEREMY: And... Yeah!
Three hundred. Three hundred ambulances
and fire trucks.
-Three hundred!
-Three hundred?
But the idea is a vehicle
that once serviced community one way,
but with a little renovating
can now service a community
-in a different way. All kid-directed.
-Okay.
JEREMY: Anything to put a smile
on a kid's face,
I picked up some over here as well.
So I bought a truck here in India.
This is where my mission can reach
the most people.
-What's this truck?
-It's a decommissioned vehicle
that I didn't know exactly
what I was going to do with it.
But I think what separates crazy
and courageousness is a plan.
-And a plan is what I do have.
-[ALL LAUGH]

-JEREMY: Yeah.
A big giant face and voice of India.
That I think will be very valuable.
ANIL: Jeremy, as a person,
when he believes in something,
it's not superficial.
So I am, you know, I'm really excited
to know him,
and share this experience with him.

some incredible vehicles.
-So many shapes and sizes.

JEREMY: Seems like no load
is ever too big.
And just like back home,
there are a lot of vehicles removed
from service
that are still perfectly good machines,
ready to be reimagined, repurposed,
renovated to serve communities again
in a new way.
So we bought a decommissioned truck
to rebuild for an organization
in Rajasthan...

...who helps communities
that are running out of drinkable water.
And with the help of a local build crew,
we created a water treatment truck.
Of all the vehicles here,
we found the perfect one.
The Tata 1613 delivery truck.
[UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING]
JEREMY: Okay, let's back up to the start
of the build.
RORY: I'm excited to see this.
JEREMY: Yeah, baby.
-ALL: Yeah!
-RORY: Here we go!

ANIL: Wow.
-RORY: Yeah. Good.
-ANIL: Good, yeah.
Yeah!

-ANIL: I thought that was great.
-He came on his own.

So it's a 2018...
-RORY: Yeah?
-...24-foot box truck,
-is what we'd call it.
-RORY: Nice!
They use it to deliver motorcycles.
And for whatever reason it slipped
through the cracks,
it had to get decommissioned. We got her.
[UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING]
JEREMY: India has some of the world's best
fabrication resources.
So it was essential to tap
into the Indian build community
and hire a local crew.
That's Sachin. He leads the build team.
He's literally one in a billion
and was our first call for this project.
If you're fabricating huge vehicles
in India, there's no one better.
I started my own fabrication unit.
We are customizing vehicles
for the armed forces.
We are fabricating mobile libraries...
We are fabricating food trucks.
We are doing everything.
JEREMY: Is that air tanks?
We'll have to move them somewhere else.
-That's an easy job.
-Yeah, yeah.
JEREMY: That's Dhruv.
He's Sachin's build partner
and a true automotive adventurer.
The guy drives all over India,
living in a modified van
that he and Sachin built.
More on that later.
DHRUV: I was in my caravan chilling
when Sachin gave me a call and he said,
"Do you know Jeremy Renner?"
I said "Yeah, everybody knows him."
He said, "You know, he wants
to build a truck."
I was like, "You got to be kidding me."
JEREMY: It's pretty thick steel.
And in the back?
Should've already opened it.
It was supposed to be empty
when we bought it.
This is all welded in, huh?
Should've checked that.
Sometimes you just gotta own it
like it was on purpose.
Well, look, it'd be too easy
if it was empty, right?
It would just be too easy for us.
That is why we're here, though, right?
We'll all chip in, help out,
start cleaning up.

-JEREMY: Yeah.
-RORY: Get this thing going.

Dhruv is my friend as well as my client.
I've known Sachin for quite some time now.
He's a good friend of mine
and we first met
while I was building my caravan
at his facility.
We've customized a caravan
which is having a expandable roof.
DHRUV: India as a country does not have
the caravanning culture here.
So I'm probably the first guy
who has built a van like this.
It took three years,
but we made it happen together.
Yep, well, we're good buddies.
SACHIN: He's knowledgeable
regarding engines, power.
I prefer him a lot
in this particular project
which we're doing right now.

A fun tidbit. When we were there,
India was going through a heatwave.
It was absolutely scorching.
Inside the building when we were working,
it was like 150 degrees.
Jer and I, we were sweating buckets.

And we look over to Anil,
cool as a cucumber.
Not a hair out of place.
They work hard. Very hard workers.

So, why a water treatment system?
I got the idea after we met
an amazing grassroots organization
called Uva Jagriti Sansthan, or U.J.S.

Big reason why we came out here
is because of what you guys
have been doing for this community.
Tell us about what you're doing
for this region.
[IN HINDI] If you look around,
there's such a beautiful view,
but you can also see...
ANIL: [IN ENGLISH] Jeremy,
what he saying is he's talking
about the water situation over here.
Because of rains are not as much
as it should be,
so there is a lack of water.
And the water is not pure.
[IN HINDI] So people are getting saline
or fluoride-mixed drinking water...
[IN ENGLISH] There are certain villages
which have a lot of contaminated water
or salted water.
So they feel that it's not good
for the bones, they...
-You age faster.
-Right, of course.
You want something there,
something which can purify the water.
Living in India, you see the resilience
of the people.
They're going through tough times.
You know, they're going through
a lot of issues.
Rajasthan is the driest state in India.
It gets the minimum rainfall.
It's like a... Kind of desert.
The need is not only to have water,
but clean water, pure water,
drinkable water.
What are your specific challenges?
[IN HINDI] A plant in one place
can't supply water to other places.
So we want to set up something
that can supply water to one place
and then move to another place.
[IN ENGLISH] So something which is...
-[IN HINDI] So something which is mobile?
-[GIRRAJ IN HINDI] Yeah.
JEREMY: [IN ENGLISH] That's why I'm here.
I'm not... I can't move a mountain.
Maybe collectively we could all move

Okay, so the biggest issue is the water
they do have is toxic.
So all water in this region
has to be tanked in.
So we're gonna change this truck
into a water filtration truck.
Okay, this is ambitious.
We're going to build
a water treatment truck.
First, we need three
stainless steel water tanks,
custom made to perfectly fit in the back.
Second, we need
a reverse-osmosis filtration system
big enough to handle a village
and small enough to fit in the truck.
Why not some entertainment also?
RORY: How about a dance floor in the back?

there's barely any electricity out there.

We need the filtration system
pushed forward
with a door on the side for access.
The water tanks move to the middle
of the truck.

Then we build a wall behind the tanks

I think before we start fabrication work,
there's a couple of things
which we have to discuss.

to every day?

What is the capacity of tanks?

-What we are having for the power source?

can you just fabricate?
-Is that something you can do?
-SACHIN: Yeah, yeah.
Fabrication is not a big deal for me.
Big deal is the power source
and the quality of water
which we're going to provide.

Deep down inside, I knew the plan
was very ambitious,
the timelines were very short.
You have to do it for India.
What you're doing for this region
is really spectacular.
And I'm sure they're gonna make
it happen...

We have to do our best to see to it
that there is clean,
drinkable water available to the people
of Rajasthan and to the future generation.
And of course, we have to do it fast.
Nobody in the country has ever done
anything like this before.
But I knew if I would give up,
I would lose an opportunity
to serve those kids out there.
So, you know, I kept my optimism high.
It's a challenge and I think
that's what makes it more exciting.

The RO system will go near the cab,
then the three tanks, then a partition,
which will make space in the back
for the entertainment zone.
So first, we need to cut a door
in the left side of the truck
for access to RO system controls.
And we're having only 14 days.

DHRUV: As a kid growing up, you know,
Anil Kapoor had been one
of the finest stars of the industry.
I loved his movie Mr. India,
in which he used to wear a watch,
press a button, disappears.
It was fascinating to me, you know,
looking at that movie.
By the way, is that the watch
which makes you disappear?

DHRUV: It was such a great moment
of my life,
that I met him, worked with him
on this project.

DHRUV: We couldn't do things over
and over again.
So everything had to be done
at the first go
and everything has to be perfect.
SACHIN: The first step was to cut
a big hole in the shape of a door
in the left-hand side of the truck.

JEREMY: Okay. This may sound
a little weird,
but every build is like a child.
And the beating heart of this truck
is the reverse osmosis filtration system.
We are using multiple stages,
to remove all the impurities.
JEREMY: Thank goodness Randhir
was there to drop
the knowledge on water filtration.
We would have been lost without him.
RANDHIR: This is the first stage.
We call it sand filtration
and carbon filtration.
How long does it last before you have
to refill with carbon?
It will last for around five
to ten years.
Five to ten years?
-That's good news. That's amazing.
-RANDHIR: Ten years. Yes.
Do we have enough power
to have at least three pumps
outside what this is as well?
First we wanted to be sure
what kind of power we need.
-Yeah.
-DHRUV: Now we'll calculate,

I want to know his sort of perspective
and what maybe some of the challenges
have been for water.

there was no issue.
The water level here was so high
that we could take water
with buckets like this.
But after the '90s,
the water issue began to arise.
Rainfall was scarce. The environment
and human exploitation
was considered the cause of it.
[IN ENGLISH] How do you get water?
TRANSLATOR: There's a village six to seven
kilometers from Laxmangarh
which has fresh water.
So there are local vendors
who get this to the school
and he refills it every week.
Let's take a look at the water.
I'd like to see what it's like.
JEREMY: Okay, so this is the water
that comes natural from the region,
but it's not drinkable water.
This is essentially a TDS meter
which measures the total dissolved solids.
RORY: What's normal, like, what's a pass?
TRANSLATOR: Anything below 50 is good
for human consumption.
RORY: Below 50.
JEREMY: So you put a little sample
in there.
RORY: Oh, wow. Look at that.
-TRANSLATOR: It's 243.
-What is it?
-RORY: What?
-Two-forty-three.
-Two-forty-three. So 50...
-RORY: That's almost five times
-the drinkable level.
-TRANSLATOR: Yeah.
-RORY: My God.
-That's amazing.
-RORY: Wow.
-And freaking terrifying.

TRANSLATOR: There are around
700 students in here,
and the children used to drink
the saline water.
There was no system in place.
JEREMY: So, this is the clean water tank
for the school, huh?
[SOFT MUSIC PLAYING]
It's 49.3.
So, it was just at that point?
-JEREMY: Yeah, yeah.
-Yeah.
-[UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING]

JEREMY: While we were out meeting kids
at the school,
Anil wasted no time taking charge.

we needed Shanti's help.
Rebuilding the truck would be useless
if we couldn't make it to the communities.

I have been involved in so many projects
and there are so many challenges
in every project.
One of our initial challenges
while building the truck
was the water tanks.
There was no scope of goof-up.
The measurement of the tank
had to be perfect.
We wanted to utilize every inch of space
at the back of the truck.
If you don't give the right water to kids
and you don't know
who you're losing out on, you know?
That person could be
next Jeremy Renner tomorrow.
Water is basic, you know?
You can't deprive any human of water.
-RANDHIR: Sachin
-SACHIN: Sir?
RANDHIR:
Sachin, check the buffing on this.
SACHIN: [IN HINDI] Yeah, they are still
working on the buffing.
Actually they're working on
the final finishing.
[IN ENGLISH] This project, it's so close
to my heart because at my childhood,
you know, I grew up in the hills
and everybody in the society,
in the neighborhood, twice every day,
you know, we'd have to carry water
from one place to other.
So, I know the pain, you know?
Those tanks couldn't have any leaks,
you know?
If water leaks from any of the tanks,
that will mean the entire project
is ruined.
So everything had to work perfectly.
It was very important, you know?

Wipe it thoroughly on the corners also.
If it's leaking anywhere,
we'll get to know.

But then Mr. Randhir, the RO guy,
noticed something was wrong.

No, we don't have enough space, Sachin.
[DHRUV IN HINDI]
So, now how wide you want this to be?
[RANDHIR IN HINDI]
I need at least 2.5 feet.

What that means is we have

Interestingly enough,
it does have to be tested
for minerals and iodine
and different things. But it's drinkable.
It's hard to imagine life
without drinkable water.
But we can't change what's in the ground.
Or can we?

JEREMY: Making the existing
water drinkable
improves the health of the kids
and helps unlock
and redirect limited resources
at the school and in the community.
If it works, the goal is to inspire
creative solutions worldwide
that help individual communities
increase the availability of clean water.
That's the dream.
[INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PLAYING]

He is telling us all this last-minute.
[IN ENGLISH] But you must've told him

So this can be in the center of the truck
with droplets on either sides.
I think it's going to look fab
when it's amplified.
We can do the same thing on top as well.
Just like one droplet.
So even if it's at a distance,
people from far off can also spot it
when it's moving.
