01x06 - The Things You Lost Along the Way

Post by bunniefuu »

(chattering in Spanish)

(chuckles)

- (chattering continues)
- (keys jingle)

(mutters in Spanish, whimpers)

(detective) Three g*nshots.

One to the head.
Two in the torso.

You think this was a
home invasion gone wrong?

Eh, it's too early to
tell, but it's, uh,

a lot of sh**ting for a home
invasion, and pretty accurate too.

Two in the side,
then one in the head.

(inhales deeply)

Feels like an execution.

Can you try to sound a little
less excited about this?

"Paul Levitt."

He's the owner,
according to the mail.

And absent from all
the family photos.

Divorce?

Something.

Detective Lin, I think we got
some g*nsh*t residue here.

The victim fired?

Can't be sure yet,
but looks that way.

But no g*n.

No. We did a thorough
search before you arrived.

(sniffs)

You smell that?

- What, sh*t and death?
- No. Ammonia.

Someone tried to
clean up over here.

(scoffs)

Buckle up, Hernandez.

Looks like we got
ourselves a m*rder.

(theme song playing)

I can't believe this
happened while we were home.

- (scoffs)
- Did you see or hear anything

between 6:00 last night
and 6:00 this morning?

- We're never on this side of the house.
- (chuckles)

- The front of your house?
- Uh...

What about the security cameras?

We were home last night.

We don't generally arm the
system when we're home.

It's a pretty safe neighborhood.

So, when was the last
time you saw Mr. Levitt?

Paul moved out a few months ago.

They're in the
middle of a divorce.

So the last time you saw
Mr. Levitt was when he moved out?

- Oh, no. He's been around.
- No.

He plays golf at the club and
comes to all the social events.

(doorbell rings)

I'm sorry, do you need
to deal with that?

No. It's just the
crushed oyster shells.

- For the pétanque court.
- Of course.

(Lin) So Paul, he was
a friend of yours?

I guess you could say that.

Can you think of anyone that
may have wanted to hurt him,

or anyone that might've
threatened him?

No. Not really.

Wait, didn't you say that he
got into a fight at Nick's?

- (friend) That wasn't anything.
- Who's Nick?

Nick Brandes.

The NBA player?

- (Lin) Oh.
- Yeah, he lives a few blocks down.

So, this Nick Brandes got
into a fight with Mr. Levitt?

That hardly seems
like a fair fight.

No, no. Nick was
having the party.

Okay. So, who did Mr. Levitt
have a fight with at this party?

(Gordy) There's only one
way this could have gone.

- Hey.
- (Gordy) Hey, Coop.

I mean, my money
is on Sam, right?

They're at each other's
throats with this divorce,

and now it all goes to her.

She's got motive, opportunity...

Grace said Sam was out of town.

(sighs deeply)

You know, the guys who invested in
Paul's restaurants are pretty mobbed up.

- Maybe he pissed off the wrong guy.
- Or it could be random.

(Gordy) Great. Professional
hit. Serial k*ller.

f*ck. I'm getting a g*n.

What do you think, Coop?

I think soon as
Gordy gets a g*n,

it's only a matter of time before
he shoots his own d*ck off.

(all laughing)

f*ck you.

Ms. Levitt, thank you for getting
here so quickly from Boston.

Of course. I left the
minute you called.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

I-I don't know how I'm
gonna tell my boys.

Paul could be a real prick, but,
you know, he's still their father.

Well, I spoke to your parents,

and they confirmed that you and your
sons were with them all night last night

celebrating a birthday.

(sighs) Thank God we went.

I don't wanna think what would've
happened if we were home.

Speaking of which, um, why
was Mr. Levitt at your house?

He no longer lived there, right?

He got himself a small
place over in Pound Ridge,

but he never fully
moved out, you know?

So, every so often, he
shows up to get something.

And you're okay with that?

Um, not really, no.

But what am I gonna do about it?

When I said I was
gonna change the locks,

he threatened to stop
paying the mortgage.

I was just trying to keep things as
peaceful as I could for the kids.

- He didn't make it easy.
- (door opens)

(whispers)

(Lin) You're aware that
you're the sole beneficiary

of a $20 million life insurance
policy in your husband's name?

I was going to get a healthy
amount from our divorce settlement.

Hmm. Now you get it all.

I apologize. Um, I gotta
ask these questions.

- Oh, that wasn't a question.
- (Lin) No, I guess it wasn't.

So, your husband left you
for a much younger woman.

That must've made you angry.

No.

He was begging me to come back.

(Lin) And you didn't
want him back?

This divorce was the best thing
that could've happened to me.

Paul was no picnic.

I mean, this is the first time in my
life I'm not taking care of a man.

You're not seeing anyone else?

For now, I'm happy to focus
on my kids and then me.

When was the last time
you spoke to your husband?

- Last night.
- Did you speak often?

He called a lot. He was
having trouble letting go.

How did he sound?

Drunk, sad, angry. The usual.

Did Paul have any
enemies you're aware of?

Not really, no.

What about Andrew Cooper?

I'm sorry. What?

Well, apparently Paul and
Mr. Cooper got into a fight

a couple of weeks
ago at a party.

You look surprised.

(stammers) Coop and Mel are
friends from the neighborhood.

I-I-I haven't heard
anything about a fight.

And Mel is, uh,
Mr. Cooper's wife?

Ex-wife.

Tell me about your husband's
businesses. Uh, the restaurants.

N-No, Paul kept me at arm's
length for all of that.

I wasn't involved.

Maybe you could look
into his investors?

Paul was always kind
of paranoid about them.

From what I gather, they
were somewhat sketchy.

Did Paul own a g*n?

(Samantha) Yeah. I told you,
he was kind of paranoid.

Do you know what kind?

No. (sighs) I don't know
anything about g*ns.

I told him to keep
his in his office.

He got me one too, but
I've never used it.

It's in the safe
back at the house.

I can give you the combination.

You can check. It's never
been fired. (stammers)

Um...

It's one of those small
ones. I don't know.

Are we finished here?

I'm sorry, I have to
check in on my boys.

Yeah, of course.

- You don't trust her?
- (scoffs) Do you?

The alibi checks out. I
spoke to the parents myself.

Well, it doesn't mean
she wasn't involved.

You'll check on that
g*n in the safe?

- Ooh.
- Got it.

Out with the old,
in with the new.

- (Hernandez) That's the girlfriend?
- (Lin) Yeah.

(Hernandez) Paul certainly had
some game. I'll give him that.

- (Lin) It was transactional.
- (Hernandez) How do you know?

(Lin) Look at her.

You're a very cynical person.
Anyone ever tell you that?

And what are you, a romantic?

I just like to see
the good in people.

Especially when
they look like that.

- You want me to take this one?
- (scoffs) Wouldn't you love that?

Why don't you go
check on that g*n?

I tried Sam again. She's
still not picking up.

I mean, her phone must be blowing
up. She'll see you called.

(sighs) I feel so awful
for her. The boys.

I know. Paul could
be kind of a d*ck,

but he wasn't a bad guy.

Really?

- No, not really. (chuckles)
- (groans, scoffs)

You ready for your
trip tomorrow?

It just feels kind of
wrong to go right now.

I'm wondering if I should
let Tori and Coop go alone.

I mean, these college
recruiting trips are a big deal.

I think it'll be good for Tori

to have both of her parents
focused on her for a bit,

- considering, you know...
- That she hates us?

(chuckles) She doesn't hate you.

Hey, you think, uh...

you think it'll be strange
being back there with Coop?

What do you mean?

It's where y'all fell
in love. (chuckles)

No.

I just hope he doesn't
forget that it's tomorrow.

(Nick chuckles)

Mr. Cooper, I'm Detective
Lin. Westmont PD.

What can I do for
you, Detective?

I'm sure you heard

that your friend Paul Levitt
was shot and k*lled last night.

Yes. It's terrible. I think
we're all still in shock.

(Lin) Do you mind if I
come in for a minute?

No, please. By all means.

Can I offer you
something to drink?

No.

- You live alone?
- Yeah.

Well, not exactly.
Not right now.

My-My sister. Temporarily.
Hence the mess.

So, uh, about Mr. Levitt.

I heard there's no love
lost between you two.

(chuckles) I wouldn't say that.

No?

I heard you got into
a fight at a party.

(sighs) That.

Um, well, it wasn't
really a fight.

It was just sort
of Paul being Paul.

Well, now Paul's being dead,

so I gotta ask you what
the fight was about.

Well, I honestly don't
remember. (sighs)

We were both drinking, and I
said something he didn't like,

he shoved me.

You know, we were both pretty
drunk, if I'm being honest.

Is there any reason
why you wouldn't be?

- Drunk?
- Honest.

None at all.

Do you get into a lot
of fights, Mr. Cooper?

- No.
- 'Cause those bruises on your knuckles

look a little too fresh to
be from the fight with Paul.

Yeah, well, like I
said, it wasn't a fight,

and this is a tennis injury.

(chuckles) Tennis.

(Coop) Happens more
often than you think.

Can I ask you where
you were last night?

- Seriously?
- Gotta rule you out.

(sighs)

I was at the Queue
nightclub in Manhattan.

Q-U-E-U-E.

- Did you go with anyone?
- I did not.

(Lin) You went by yourself?

I find you're far more
likely to leave with someone

if you don't go with someone.

- Did you leave with someone?
- I didn't.

- Is that unusual for you?
- Less and less so.

- What time did you arrive home?
- Uh, I wanna say midnight.

Spent the rest of the night
here, hanging with my sister.

You're a little old to be
going to nightclubs, though.

No sh*t. I'm newly single,

and it's not like I'm
gonna meet people out here.

You know, Samantha Levitt is also
newly single and very attractive.

- Do you know if she's seeing anyone?
- No idea.

She's friendlier with my ex.

I heard that she and Paul were
having a pretty bad divorce.

Do you know of any good ones?

Yeah. I guess you would know.

I'm-I'm sorry, Detective Lin,
do you have a problem with me?

No.

Of course not. What would
make you think that?

I guess it's just your
sunny disposition.

Yeah, well, I get that a lot.
