It's a pastime he shares with his son chuck.

That he just absolutely loved to do.

He loved to go to the range and sh**t.

If you weren't going to get involved in sh**ting,

You probably weren't going to spend much time with him,

To be honest.

Narrator: so visits to the range become a family affair.

I'll say to this day, with a p*stol,

My sister's a better shot than I am.

Chuck and my father were identical.

They were very close, but they often clashed.

Two alpha males in one home.

Narrator: at home, clint is a dedicated father

And loving husband.

But it hasn't always been easy.

Oh, yeah. That's good.

My parents got divorced when I was about 7,

And dad had custody of us, so we grew up with dad,

My sister and i.

Dad met leatha,

My stepmom, through a mutual friend

When I was probably maybe sixth grade.

Here we go.

Leatha: clint and I met in 2001.

We got engaged a year later, november 2002.

I had two kids in my first marriage,

And clint had two kids from his first marriage.

So we became a blended family,

And I think we did pretty well.

Everyone got along mostly.

Narrator: clint is assistant chief deputy

With harris county constables office.

Every morning, he'd give me a kiss goodbye before he left.

Well, that morning I had already put lip gloss on

So he couldn't hardly kiss my lips

And have lip gloss at his job,

So he kissed me on the cheek and said, "have a good day,

I love you," and left.

I just finished up my night patrol shift.

We hear somebody key up on our main radio channel.

We couldn't understand who it was.

Sounds like they're under water.

We can't understand what they're saying.

They key up again.

[ Siren wailing ]

Narrator: 701 west baker

Is harris county, baytown courthouse.



And we're trying to have our dispatch locate the i.d. Number

To find out who is radio it is.

And then he keys up again.

And it's a little more discernable this time.

And I'm getting there as fast as possible.

Make a right, and I'm going to the back of the courthouse.

Up in the corner, the white police tahoe, back end.

I don't see anybody on the driver's side or around.

I don't see any other car in the parking lot.

I pull up to the tahoe about 10 feet off of

Its front left.

As I go out...

...i see chief greenwood step out

From behind the rear passenger door.

♪♪

I can see he's got blood spots on his hands

And his neck and his face.

Narrator: incredibly, though shocked,

Clint greenwood is still on his feet.

Sergeant arnett races to help him.

♪♪

And he can't talk.

He can only -- he can mouth words,

And it was like a guttural

Mouthing to get the sound out.

Narrator: more officers arrive on scene.

They must get clint to safety.

We turned greenwood on his back.

And we drag him...

...about 12 feet to my car.

Narrator: they hoist him into the back of sergeant arnett's vehicle.

We get him in the back of the car.

The baytown officer, she tells me, she goes,

"I got to take your car and get him out of here."

Go, go, go.

Narrator: clint is rushed to the hospital,

Fighting for his life.

The southeast corner of harris county courthouse

Parking lot is sealed off.

Detective edgar elizondo catches the case.

His first priority -- document the crime scene.

It was a bloody crime scene.

You could tell that he had walked

From the right passenger side towards the front of his vehicle

And eventually collapse.

♪♪

Those grocery bags that he had dropped right below his tahoe.

♪♪

I observed two 9-millimeter casings, spent casings.

One was near the front right door...

...and the second one was near the back right tire.

♪♪

We believed the suspect walked up to greenwood,

Feet from him, and shot.

Narrator: clint's wallet and cell have not been taken.

This is no robbery.

It's a cold-blooded execution

With no sign of a suspect nearby.

Okay, we need to go east, door to door...

Detective elizondo orders a canvass of the area

For anyone who may have seen or heard the sh**ting.

But he also targets another kind of witness.

Nathan, check out the courthouse security,

See how many security cameras we have.

Yes, sir. All right?

Everybody got it? You clear?

Clear. Let's go.

Narrator: detectives scour the vicinity of the courthouse

Searching for cameras.

Elizondo: surveillance cameras to lead us to,

Of course, any suspects or vehicles

Were around that area, and we go from there.

Narrator: at 7:00 a.m.,

Clint's wife leatha is just settling in at work.

Leatha: there was a message left on my cellphone,

So I called back, and it was an officer

Who told me that something happened,

Not to listen to any of the news,

Not to look at any media,

To get my things ready, and go downstairs

To meet them in front of the building.

And I knew that wasn't good.

They didn't tell me anything else.

So I headed out to the front of the building

And waited and waited and was wondering and thinking

Really bad thoughts.

I had no clue what happened.

Narrator: while clint fights for his life,

Investigators have recovered footage from a security camera

Inside the courthouse.

Once they recovered some video, they would bring it back to us.

What you got?

There's a million emotions going through your mind

When you're watching this video footage

Because you do know what's going to happen.

You don't want to witness a person's last moments,

But you know that you have to watch

Because those moments could be very important

In identifying a suspect.

Narrator: are investigators about to see their fellow officer

Gunned down in cold blood?

Narrator: detectives from baytown p.d. Are investigating the sh**ting

Of assistant chief deputy clint greenwood.

They're watching surveillance footage from the courthouse

Hoping to see the sh**ter.

The first footage that we located

Was from the interior camera of the courthouse.

Narrator: they play it from just before clint's call for help

Around 6:56 a.m.

That's clint's tahoe.

It showed deputy greenwood's vehicle arriving on the scene.

Elizondo: go on.

Narrator: they keep watching.

But no one follows.

There's no further movement on camera,

Until...

Back up, back up.

♪♪

Two minutes before clint's call for help,

A man walks into view.

We see a white male with what looked like a heavy jacket

Walking towards the east.

Can you zoom in?

Stocky build 5'10" to 6 feet tall

Because of the quality of the footage,

It was very hard to make out what that subject was exactly.

Narrator: but the surveillance footage has captured one vital clue.

Gallop: we did locate something that looked like a patch

On one of the shoulders.

We could not make out what the patch was.

Narrator: part of clint's job is investigating police misconduct,

Providing a possible motive for m*rder.

At that moment, we believed it could have been an ex-officer

Or a current police officer.

When we got to the hospital, I got out.

Someone came over to me to take me down the hallway.

I asked if clint was okay,

And he said clint's been shot.

And I said, "is he alive?"

And he said, "no, ma'am."

[ Voice breaking ] so we started walking...

Again.

And I drop my purse.

And I was just saying, "no way,

No way," all the way down the hall.

I just couldn't believe it.

Narrator: the cold-blooded sh**ting

Of a senior law-enforcement officer

Is now a homicide.

Investigators are determined to catch the k*ller.

We didn't know if this was just someone out

Targeting police officers in general,

If the public was in danger

Because of what this person was doing.

So it was a race to try to figure out what was going on.

Narrator: they need to find more surveillance footage.

We started expanding our search in all directions

And going to every business, every location that we could.

What you got?

Narrator: a school across the street has three security cameras

That face the courthouse.

The first shows clint's white tahoe arriving at 6:53.

♪♪

And look at this.

♪♪

A second camera shows him turning into the parking lot

And heading toward the m*rder scene.

Let it play.

They keep watching, waiting to see

If their suspect caught on the interior camera comes into view.

♪♪

There's nothing until three minutes after clint's arrival.

A figure appears from behind the courthouse.

There. Can you blow that up?

♪♪

It's 6:54 a.m. -- Just seconds after clint was shot.

Elizondo: we observed a white male

Walking around the building towards the east.

Gets a black, small, compact vehicle,

Pulls out the parking spot.

And drives north through the parking lot.

Narrator: he is headed toward the intersection.

They look for the license, but the black hatchback

Is side on, hiding it from view.

Any more angles?

How about this one?

A third camera points away from the crime scene

Toward the intersection with the main road.

They can just make out the suspect car fleeing the scene,

But it's obscured by parked vehicles.

♪♪

♪♪

And by the time it's visible, it's too far away to identify.

The footage reveals the suspect's vehicle

Was already at the courthouse when clint arrived.

Rewind the tape.

Detective elizondo wants to know how long

He'd been lying in wait.

So they rewind the footage

To earlier that morning just before daybreak.

At 6:32 a.m.,



Elizondo: we observed the suspected vehicle driving.

We then see him parking his vehicle.

That's got to be him.

♪♪

We then observed him exit the vehicle...

♪♪

♪♪

...going towards the passenger's front side.

Opens the door and retrieves an item.

Narrator: he walks to the rear of the courthouse.

See if you've got him walking past the south entrance.

♪♪

Detective elizondo hopes to see the same figure

Walking toward the scene.

Sure enough, 20 minutes before clint is attacked,

The man appears.

He even looks up directly at camera.

But he's too far away for an i.d.

It was frustrating to us because that's all we had.

Narrator: investigators are convinced this is clint's k*ller

And that this was a cold, calculated m*rder.

But without a positive i.d., Their only option is to try

To track the black hatchback after the m*rder.

Officers are dispatched to find any cameras

That cover the route it took.

After leaving the courthouse.

And they're in luck.

A car wash has a camera pointing right at the road

The vehicle turned into.

The footage is brought straight back to view.

They queue to around the time of the m*rder.

It shows the small black car passing a school bus

That was traveling in the same direction on baker road.

Narrator: seven minutes after clint's sh**ting,

The suspect's vehicle speeds past the bus,

Giving detective elizondo an idea.

School buses have cameras, right?

Yeah. All right.

Let's go pay them a visit.

Narrator: investigators head straight out to the bus depot to see

If the onboard security camera captured the black hatchback.

The bus is quickly identified as the 1102

That drove its usual school day route to a local high school.

They queue the footage to 7:00 a.m.

When they saw the vehicle speed past.

♪♪

Wait, what was that?

Can you bring it back for me, please?

You can actually see the time the black car

Passes the school bus.

It seemed to be going at a good rate of speed.

Can you get in on that plate right there?

But we were unable to, once again,

Locate suspect information

Or specific vehicle information from that footage.

Narrator: after the suspect's vehicle passes the bus,

The surveillance trail goes cold.

At that point we just got to keep on moving on,

Moving forward.

Narrator: back at the p.d.,

Detectives investigating clint greenwood's

Internal affairs case files make a disturbing discovery.

During investigation, we learned that an ex-officer,

Eric baumgart and william marks

Had lawsuits against greenwood.

Eric baumgart was ruled out because he was

Currently in the harris county jail.

But marks is still a free man,

And he has an ongoing grudge against clint.

So now william marks became our number-one suspect.

Narrator: 18 hours after clint greenwood was shot dead,

William marks comes in for questioning.

Narrator: 18 hours after clint greenwood's m*rder,

Investigators face up to the fact

The k*ller could be one of their own...

...former reserve police officer william marks.

♪♪

He has a similar build as the figure at the crime scene.

And detectives learn that marks and clint greenwood

Were in a long-running feud.

♪♪

William marks is suing clint greenwood in relation

To an alleged wrongful charge.

♪♪

Marks claims he was at home on the morning

Clint greenwood was m*rder*d.

Elizondo: he cooperated with the investigation.

He gives his phone, we download his phone to see

If there is any kind of evidence of

Communication between anyone else

That could have hurt greenwood, and we found nothing.

William marks' alibi checked out,

And he was ruled out as a suspect.

Catherine: I kind of had a pitless feeling

In my stomach.

My dad had a way of feeling like home.

It felt very weird

Walking into my kitchen

And not seeing my dad at the stovetop humming

Some old rock-n-roll song.

♪♪

You know why, why, why?

Why did this guy hate dad so much?

Why did this guy decide, you know, he needed to k*ll

My dad?

Narrator: detectives at baytown p.d.

Are working round the clock to find the answer.

We were still unable to say for sure

What type of vehicle was.

We don't have a license plate, the model,

Or make of the vehicle.

Narrator: but pictures from the surveillance footage

Spark a new thought.

How did the k*ller know clint's daily routine?

Detective elizondo is convinced the k*ller

Must have scouted the parking lot.

Show me the courthouse lot the day before.

School cameras.

Narrator: he scrolls back through the surveillance footage

Covering the road leading to the crime scene

The day before the m*rder.

Stop.

Right there.

His hunch pays off.

At 4:27 p.m.,

One of the school cameras shows what looks like

The same black hatchback.

They switch camera.

The car enters the lot, but this time doesn't stop.

Elizondo: the vehicle actually drives

Through the south parking lot westbound.

Narrator: it continues past the courthouse

And out of sight.

Wait, we've got another angle.

♪♪

Now it passes by the interior camera.

♪♪

It re-enters the top right of frame...

...and parks.

♪♪

♪♪

Elizondo: you see him exit the vehicle and then eventually go off

The screen.

Narrator: the man is out of view for a minute and a half...

What's he doing?

...before returning to his vehicle.

♪♪

He eventually gets back in his vehicle.

And then he drives around the back side of the courthouse.

Narrator: this time, the driver's side of the vehicle

Passes right in front of the camera.

What's that?

We're able to freeze frame the vehicle

As it was going past those windows in the daylight.

What is that?

Narrator: detectives investigating the m*rder of clint greenwood

Have spotted something in the window of a vehicle

Caught on camera at the crime scene

The day before he was k*lled.

Look at that.

We were able to locate a sticker

That was on the driver's side glass for the window.

I immediately began to think of the barcode stickers

That are for rental car agencies,

Specifically that enterprise rent-a-car

Puts those decals

On there for checkout and returning vehicles.

Elizondo: now we've got probably the biggest lead that we could have.

That was our biggest breakthrough right there.

Narrator: only problem is there are 19 enterprise branches

In the houston area alone.

Without a license plate, finding it is near impossible.

Father, we gathered in this place to honor this man,

To honor a life well lived.

Narrator: three days after clint's m*rder,

His family, friends, and law-enforcement personnel

Gather to say goodbye.

Catherine: it was beautiful,

And it was the best funeral I could ever want for him.

But it was just very hard to be there.

Narrator: more than 3,000 people assemble to pay their respects.

Today we're celebrating the life of clint greenwood,

And I know everyone is well aware of how amazing he was

And how fulfilling his career in law enforcement was.

But I want to celebrate clint greenwood

The husband, father, and friend.

And I just wanted people to know my dad

For what I knew him as -- my dad --

And that he was goofy and that he was witty and smart

And not perfect, but perfect to me.

I love you, dad,

And I'm so thankful that you were my father.

Detectives review surveillance footage

From businesses across baytown.

Gallop: we were just collecting

As much video surveillance as we can,

And then once they brought it back

To the emergency operations center,

We had another set of detectives and officers

Who were just reviewing the video.

A lot of time is spent looking just at video footage in general

To try to figure out what's important and what's not.

Narrator: finally, their hard work pays off.

At 4:38 p.m., The day before clint's m*rder...

...a black hatchback turns into the local raceway gas station.

Wait, what's that?

The vehicle, we could tell,

Had the same sticker on the driver's side window.

♪♪

♪♪

Narrator: but they still cannot read the license plate.

♪♪

Gallop: the suspect got out, pumped gas.

Now the race was trying to determine

Who that person was specifically.

♪♪

The suspect was slightly heavyset, white male,

Looked to be older -- maybe 50s or 60s.

Narrator: but to get a positive i.d.,

They need a clear shot of his face.

It was very frustrating seeing the person

That we knew was the suspect

But we couldn't make out anything to give

A really good description or get more information.

Narrator: identifying him now depends on surveillance footage

From inside the store.

Let me bring this one up over here.

Sure.

It was a huge moment because we had not been able

To put a face with the crime.

I said, "now we got him."

Narrator: detectives now cross-reference

The image against driver's licenses used at enterprise.

They get a hit.

The man is identified as 64-year-old

William kenny from houston, texas.

Detectives urgently start looking for background on kenny.

Gallop: we located a website that it appears that he had created

Where he basically detailed a lot of things

That he felt happened to him that were wrong and unjust.

Narrator: the website reveals a list of names.

It's a whole bunch of people from the d.a.'S office.

At the top of that list is clint greenwood.

I was afraid that he was gonna k*ll someone else.

Narrator: police ping kenny's cellphone.

We got to hit.

Gallop: his cellphone was located

Around the harris county court complex in downtown houston.

[ Siren wails ]

A bunch of our guys went to downtown and searched for him.

Narrator: detectives must find kenny

Before he kills again.

Narrator: seven days after clint greenwood's m*rder,

Police launch a manhunt.

They've traced william kenny's cellphone

To the court complex in downtown houston,

Where they're worried he'll k*ll again.

But kenny's cellphone isn't giving an accurate position.

It was very frustrating.

You know, we did everything we could trying to locate him.

Narrator: but investigators can't find him.

Monday, early morning, I was at the d.a.'S office.

During that time, the d.a. Had a phone call.

[ Telephone ringing ]

It was a houston police officer

That called him.

Narrator: houston police have found kenny.

And actually told him, "we believe

The guy you're looking for shot himself."

Narrator: william kenny is dead.

I was, like, devastated.

He had shot himself in front of baytown hospital

The day after greenwood's m*rder.

Narrator: he's been dead the entire time

The police have been looking for him.

A 9-millimeter p*stol was found beside his body.

Ballistics confirm it's the m*rder weapon.

There's no doubt in my mind

William kenny, he did commit the m*rder.

Narrator: now investigators can finally piece together what happened.

Gallop: on march 31, 2017, william kenny

Picked up a black hatchback rental car

From enterprise rent-a-car.

The next day, william kenny drove 10 miles

To the city of baytown, texas,

Where he then traveled to the harris county court annex

In order to plan the m*rder of clint greenwood.

The next morning, kenny travelled

To the harris county courthouse annex building...

...parked his vehicle,

Walked behind the courthouse, and waited

For deputy greenwood to arrive.

Narrator: he waits 20 minutes for clint to show up.

As deputy greenwood parked his vehicle...

...he was then ambushed by kenny...

Clint!

...who shot him in the neck

And in the shoulder.

William kenny is then seen on courthouse surveillance video

Leaving the scene...

...walking to his vehicle, and then driving away.

He did the cowardly thing and took his own life,

So he will never be able to face a family,

You know, family won't face him to find out why.

Catherine: I felt that we didn't get justice at all.

And I just -- I couldn't understand why.

I think about clint daily.

Every day.
