Narrator: ...goes into a building and doesn't come out.

When was she last seen?

We weren't 100 percent sure what had happened.

Kline: you only have a very short amount of time

To find a missing person.

Where is she?

Narrator: detectives are led into a dark world

With terrifying consequences.

Dadio: we had to find her in order to prove

That something happened to her.

A biomedical researcher and one day curing cancer.

Simpson: annie was absolutely driven and motivated.

She was curious.

She was intelligent, and she wanted to use

Her curiosity for the common good.

Narrator: but her studies at yale

Aren't the only thing keeping annie busy.

Simpson: annie was going to marry her longtime boyfriend

And best friend, jonathan widawsky.

They loved one another completely.

Jon was earning his own doctoral degree

At columbia university in new york,

And annie was living in connecticut.

Annie was really busy balancing life,

Balancing the wedding plans, balancing academic studies.

Narrator: with the wedding set for this coming sunday...

Good morning, deborah.

...annie takes time off from her studies

To find the right look for the big day.

I think annie was extremely excited about the wedding.

She was very precise about the way it had to be done.

I believe she wanted to be the best version of herself.

How's jonathan doing?

Oh, I think he's a little bit more excited than me. [ Laughs ]

It's always nice when the groom's excited.

[ Laughs ]

Kiley: I felt close to her.

I felt like she trusted me.

It's perfect.

-Yeah? -Thank you.

Okay, good. I was worried. [ Laughs ]

I was worried you weren't gonna like it.

No. I love it.

Narrator: but with just six days to go,

It appears annie is having last-minute nerves.

Tell me I'm doing the right thing.

Simpson: annie called.

She just wanted to know if they were too young

To be getting married,

And I assured her that she should definitely go ahead

With marrying jon.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Cellphone beeps ]

Narrator: the following evening, annie doesn't return home.

♪♪

With her roommate reporting her missing,

Yale police immediately call in the fbi for help.

Lawton: we usually get called in at the early stages

For missing persons,

Particularly somebody that everybody is surprised

Is missing and doesn't stay out of communication.

Annie le was that type of person.

People generally knew where she was.

The yale police department interviewed some family members

Telephonically, roommates in person,

And some other people that knew her,

And nobody knew of her whereabouts.

Narrator: agent lawton begins his investigation

At annie's office.

Lawton: first thing that I wanted to see was her desk

And maybe get a feel for what kind of person she was

And also if there had been a struggle there.

I noticed her purse and her phone were there at her desk.

That was a little surprising.

Narrator: with no sign of a struggle,

He wants to know if anybody saw annie leave.

Lawton: the yale police had been briefed by coworkers

That she had started an experiment.

They said that she had gone from her desk,

Walked over to her lab, and basically vanished

And never came back to finish the experiment,

Which is completely unlike her.

♪♪

Narrator: with annie not in her office,

Special agent lawton heads straight over to annie's lab,

Which is located on 10 amistad street

In the basement of the yale animal research center,

A one-minute walk away from her office.

Film everything.

Lawton: they have a record what the basement looked like.

Extensive video footage was taken

By the connecticut state police.

♪♪

First thing that hits you when you walk through the door

Is the acrid smell of animal waste.

♪♪

It's a place where the doctors and the scientists

Perform experiments on laboratory animals.

♪♪

The laboratory setup is many, many doors,

Rooms within rooms,

♪♪

Different spaces where things are stored,

A lot of stainless-steel paneling.

It's almost catacombed.

Narrator: investigators take an initial look in annie's lab,

G13, where she conducts her experiments.

Lawton: g13 lab is an unusual type of room.

You can't see from the door

All the way to the other side of the lab

Because the racks block your view.

During our cursory search of the lab building for annie le,

We did look in g13, and nothing was found.

Nothing suspicious that met the naked eye could be seen.

Narrator: with no leads, police reach out to the public

For information on her mysterious disappearance.

Reporter: the fbi is now involved in the search for

A yale university grad student, 24-year-old annie le,

Last seen on tuesday.

♪♪

Simpson: it was a picture of annie.

I couldn't function.

I couldn't process my emotions.

[ Crying ]

Jon wasn't answering, so I was calling

One friend after the other.

I was just so worried.

♪♪

I wanted her to be okay.

♪♪

Narrator: with no response from the public,

The fbi call in reinforcements to help find her.

Once we had established that annie le was a missing person,

We decided that we had to get more people

Involved in the case.

Sergeant kline, connecticut state police.

You only have a very short amount of time

To find a missing person.

Lieutenant lisa dadio.

We are trying to figure out what happened,

Whether or not if it's a suspected kidnapping

Or something much worse.

Lawton: she was about to get married.

She was in communication with somebody all the time,

So for her to just stop cold was not only unusual

But really suspicious.

♪♪

Narrator: as fear for annie's safety grows,

Investigators desperately need answers.

[ Keypad beeps ]

♪♪

Anybody who worked at yale animal research center

Had a badge,

And they were responsible to badge their way in and out.

Narrator: while investigators download

The key-card-access data,

Agent lawton notices something else.

Luckily for us, yale has closed-circuit tv cameras.

I need to view that camera now.

♪♪

♪♪

Narrator: less than 24 hours after yale phd student annie le

Was reported missing,

Investigators recover surveillance footage

From the campus security cameras.

Lawton: there was too many cameras

At the yale animal research center.

The camera in front,

Which is mostly where the employees come in and out,

And then there's a side entrance,

And there's a camera there, too.

♪♪

Narrator: they start by reviewing the camera

Covering the main entrance.

Investigators want to confirm that annie arrived

At the research center,

So they cue the footage to just after 10:00 am,

When she was last seen leaving her office.

♪♪

♪♪

Wait. Pause it there.

♪♪

Lawton: we found video of annie le

Entering the yale animal research center,

And she got to work that morning at 9 past 10:00.

There was nothing unusual about the way she was acting.

She didn't seem scared.

She didn't seem like she was under duress.

♪♪

Narrator: now lawton wants to get a timeline of her on cctv

Once entering the facility,

But there is only one camera on the basement level,

Covering a corridor

Close to where annie conducts her experiments.

♪♪

♪♪

They keep watching in case she walks past.

♪♪

But there's no sign of annie.

♪♪

While investigators continue to trawl through the footage,

Detective lisa dadio meets with annie's family.

Dadio: around the same time that this had happened,

There was an infamous case of a runaway bride

That had made national news, and at the time,

Yale didn't know if this was one of those types of cases.

How was annie feeling about the wedding?

Was the pressure so intense with annie

That she ran away from everything?

Not annie. She was excited.

♪♪

Us friends who knew her better, her family who knew her better,

We knew there was no way annie would have run away.

There was definitely something wrong and something amiss.

♪♪

Narrator: it's been 24 hours since annie went missing.

While investigators continue to wait

For annie's key-card data to confirm

If she entered lab g13,

Investigators check other internal cameras

In case she went upstairs.

It literally took several people hours and hours and hours

To comb through all that video surveillance

Of all the different cameras and the angles.

Narrator: there's no sign of annie inside her lab building,

So investigators decide to turn their attention

Back to the exterior cameras to establish when annie left.

One of the main objectives is to see if, in fact,

She did leave the building.

If she did, who was she with?

Did she appear to be under duress?

Which direction did she walk in?

♪♪

Narrator: investigators scour both exits.

Hours go by as employees walk in and walk out of the building.

♪♪

There's no sign of annie.

Wait. What's that?

Narrator: at 12:50 pm, less than three hours

After annie entered the lab building...

What's going on?

Narrator: ...detectives notice a swarm of people

Suddenly pour out from both exits, covering their ears.

It dawned us, looks like the fire alarm did go off

Because, at this time, everyone is leaving the building.

This was a big concern for us because we were worried

That annie could have slipped through the cracks, so to speak.

♪♪

Reload all of the footage.

I want to review it all again frame by frame.

♪♪

Kline: we were very attentive to that time frame

And to every single person leaving every exit at that time.

Play it again.

Kline: she should have left the building at that time

Because everyone else did.

♪♪

Narrator: detectives continue to search through the footage,

But annie isn't seen again on either camera.

♪♪

Lawton: we reviewed it, re-reviewed it, scrutinized it.

We had no video footage of her leaving the facility -- none.

♪♪

Narrator: with no sign of annie, detectives need to consider

Whether something more sinister has happened to her.

The whole mind set and the atmosphere

Changed at that point.

♪♪

Narrator: as annie is less than 5 feet tall,

Detectives need to consider whether she has been harmed

And carried out of the building against her will.

We were looking at people leaving the building

And whether they were carrying an object

That could have possibly contained annie,

Whether she was alive or not alive.

♪♪

Narrator: they watch the footage again.

♪♪

Kline: but nothing left that building in a way

That would have said to us,

"Oh, she may be with that person,"

Or, "she may be in that object

Or that item or that bag or that box."

♪♪

Narrator: detectives are rapidly running out of options.

I was the initial investigator on the case,

And I didn't sleep for days.

The only other possibility was she went out with the trash.

♪♪

Might not have been too difficult to do

Because there was five or six different trash streams

That left the yale animal research center --

Animal carcass, animal waste.

And if somebody put her

In one of those real strong type of contractor bags,

She would have gone right out into the dumpster

With the rest of the other trash,

As horrible as that sounds to even say.

♪♪

Kline: we were searching in garbage bins and the dumps

Where all this garbage from this facility was going to.

We were searching everywhere to no avail.

It's like she disappeared and vanished into thin air.

Lawton: as the hours ticked by, it became more and more apparent

That she had never left the building,

But we had no idea where she was.

♪♪

Narrator: back at the station,

Annie's fiancé has arrived from new york,

And investigators are eager to question him.

♪♪

Dadio: so, typically when somebody goes missing,

It's usually the person closest to them,

A significant other, a family member, a spouse.

Where were you on september 8th,

The night that annie disappeared?

I was at home in long island.

♪♪

Narrator: while officers confirm jonathan's alibi,

♪♪

The data from annie's key card comes in.

♪♪

Lawton: our key-card-access records showed her enter a room

At 10:11 in the morning, which was lab g13.

♪♪

When we scrutinized the records and found out that

That was the last place

That electronically we could track her,

We started to believe that something may have happened

To her inside that room.

♪♪

We started to dig deeper into what was going on at the lab.

♪♪

Narrator: investigators conduct a second search of lab g13.

Come take a look at this.

What the investigators were able to find

Were minute pieces of evidence.

An eraser-tip speck of blood on one of the instruments.

If that was indeed annie le's blood,

That would indicate some harm came to her.

♪♪

Lawton.

Narrator: they keep searching, desperate to find annie.

I think there's something up here.

We now know that something bad has happened to annie.

♪♪

♪♪

Narrator: three days after student annie le vanished

From yale university,

Investigators find a speck of blood in her lab, g13,

So they begin tearing the room apart to try to find her.

Lawton, I think there's something up here.

♪♪

Lawton: they found a ceiling panel, which had been opened up.

Above that ceiling panel, there was a bloody sock

And a discarded rubber glove.

[ Camera shutter clicks ]

This is a significant piece of evidence

Because of the blood.

♪♪

Narrator: agent lawton wants to know

If the sock belongs to annie.

Can you load up the footage of annie entering the building?

The day that annie went missing, we can see what she's wearing.

♪♪

Pause it there.

Can you zoom in on her feet?

♪♪

You can see she's wearing white ankle socks.

It matches.

That's telling us that the sock that we found in the ceiling

Has got to be annie's.

Lawton: it's pretty obvious that violent harm

Had come to annie le inside the confines of the lab.

♪♪

Narrator: with annie's bloodied sock found in g13,

Investigators believe that whoever harmed annie

Had access to her lab.

♪♪

There were two people --

Raymond clark, who was an animal research assistant,

And larry godfrey, who was a contractor,

Who also were in the room at the time.

That is interesting to us.

♪♪

Narrator: first to be interviewed --



♪♪

One of the employees was a man named raymond clark,

Who had worked at the yale animal research center

For years.

He seemed to know every inch of the place.

Narrator: annie's lab, g13, is one of the rooms

He is assigned to maintain.

Lawton: raymond clark was calm, cool, and collected.

He was helpful.

He said he felt bad that nobody could find her.

He wanted to help out.

Narrator: clark says he arrived at work at 7:00 am

And saw annie in room g13 at around 10:30 am.

He said that he had seen her leave her laboratory

About 12:30 that afternoon.

Didn't know where she was going.

Said that she had an armload of stuff, and she was leaving,

And nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

Narrator: clark then says he returned to work



But did not see annie again.

He then left for the day around 4:00 pm.

Lawton: we banged out an affidavit and a warrant

To take hair, buccal swab for dna,

And other items from his body.

Narrator: clark is released while they check out his story.

Detectives load the footage from the main entrance

To just before 7:00 am, when clark said he arrived.

You see raymond clark enter the building

Just after 7:00 in the morning on september 8th.

Narrator: sergeant kline switches to the camera

Covering the emergency exit.

♪♪

Next time we see him on video

Is with the fire alarm going off at 12:50.

He was walking out with everyone else,

And he looked like everybody else,

Walking out normally, holding the door for people.

He comes back into the building at 1:10

Through the front entrance.

The next time we see him leaving that building

Was at the end of the day,

So now we have a timeline of him under video surveillance.

There was nothing suspicious at all in any of his movements

Or any of his actions in how he was responding

To people around him.

Narrator: investigators now turn their attention

To contractor larry godfrey, the other man

Who swiped into room g13 the day annie went missing.

♪♪

Contract employee was a temporary employee.

He'd come down to yale a couple of times

To repair and replace lighting.

The contract employee admitted that he had gone into g13.

He got in there about 11:30,

So he was within that two-hour window.

You didn't see annie le at all?

No, not at all.

Narrator: godfrey says he left via the side exit

When the fire alarm went off and returned with everyone else,

Only to leave again at 2:30 pm, after finishing his work.

Lawton: he was a possible suspect.

He was there every now and then,

Might have seen somebody that he wanted to harm,

So we had to focus in on him a little bit.

♪♪

Narrator: investigators immediately check out the story

Against the surveillance footage.

♪♪

Kline: looking at larry godfrey's movements,

We see that he enters the building at 11:30 in the morning

♪♪

And that he leaves out the side entrance at 12:50

When the fire alarm went off.

♪♪

And at the end of the day, he left at 2:30,

And through all those movements, he looked like everybody else.

His movements were consistent with his interview

And also consistent with everything else that we found.

Narrator: both stories check out.

But the footage does not show what either man did inside g13

Or in the surrounding rooms.

♪♪

With no prime suspects and no sign of annie

Leaving the lab building,

All focus is on 10 amistad street.

Finding her was paramount.

We had to find her in order to prove

That something happened to her.

Narrator: so forensic teams expand their search

Across the entire basement level.

♪♪

Five rooms along from annie's lab is room g22.

One of the things that the investigators find in g22

Is little metal type of beads.

Narrator: detectives re-analyze the cctv

Of annie entering her lab building.

♪♪

She has on this beaded necklace.

And so the beads that are found in g22 are consistent with

The beads of the necklace that annie was wearing

At the time that she went into 10 amistad.

♪♪

Narrator: police in room g22 apply luminol

To the walls and floor.

And the room lights up.

It's now a crime scene.

♪♪

Initially, we hope she's gonna pop up every day,

But as every day in the investigation goes on

And we can't find her

And we're finding more and more items that contain blood on it,

The possibilities of annie being alive

Are significantly diminished.

♪♪

It just became more evident that something sinister or horrible

Had gone wrong, and by that time...

♪♪

It just felt like she wasn't coming back.

♪♪

Narrator: the search then moves into the locker rooms

Just outside g22.

Dadio: as we're combing through everything on that lower level,

Investigators start smelling decomposition.

Human decomposition is a smell like no other.

There's nothing that smells anything like it.

And now it's, "all right. Where is she?"

♪♪

The decision was made to bring in a cadaver dog.

In this case, the dog alerted to a wall in a room

In that lower level.

[ Barks ]

There was a little mechanical, metal chase wall piece

That was in a wall.

They removed the nuts and bolts of that.

As soon as they take off that first bolt

And the metal comes off of the wall,

Narrator: on the day annie le was supposed to get married,

Investigators find something hidden in a wall

Of her lab building.

Kline: there was an access panel to a plumbing chase.

We opened up the panel and immediately knew

That something was wrong.

We found her on the day that was supposed to be

The happiest day of her life, her wedding day,

And yet we find her lifeless body

Dumped inside of a wall upside down.

♪♪

We had to then make the notification to her fiancé,

To her mother,

To family that on the day she was to get married,

We now know she's in fact deceased.

♪♪

Annie was found in the manner that she was found,

And it was so, so horrible.

[ Crying ] jon, I'm so sorry.

I couldn't believe that such a horrific act

Was done against annie.

Kiley: it made me cry. It made me upset.

It made me feel, like, a chill in my body

And made me think...

You know, "who would want to do that to her?"

♪♪

Narrator: the search for the 24-year-old bride-to-be is over,

And the case is now a homicide.

[ Police radio chatter ]

[ Camera shutter clicks ]

The body is carefully removed and taken for autopsy.

Based upon decomposition,

You could see that she had trauma to her face area.

Her underwear are not on her waist.

They're down a little bit, and so investigatively we think

That maybe an attempt was made to sexually as*ault her.

♪♪

Narrator: around annie's neck is a broken necklace,

The beads identical to the ones found in room g22.

She had a broken clavicle, a broken jawbone.

The cause of death was asphyxiation.

She was strangled to death.

Narrator: and there's more.

Dadio: she was also missing a sock,

And the other sock wasn't in there.

Annie also had on a blue disposable glove,

But only one, so for us looking back,

We're like, "wait a minute."

We found a white sock.

We found another glove.

Somebody took the time to hide items of evidence,

And so we know that now we're looking at somebody

Who has access to this floor,

Who's very familiar with the floor.

[ Camera shutter clicks ]

Narrator: investigators forensically search

The crime scene for clues

That will lead them to annie's k*ller.

♪♪

Dadio: find in the recycle bin a yellow disposable lab coat

That had blood on it.

Narrator: when entering each room in the basement level,

Everyone is required to sign a log sheet.

We found in the wall with annie a green-inked pen.

This turned out to be quite significant.

♪♪

Lawton: we went back to the key-card-access logs

And found out who had gained access to the room.

♪♪

Come take a look at this.

What we found was that there was an unusual uptick

In activity in g22, which was close to annie's lab.

And raymond clark actually was in that room



That we were looking at.

Wait.

And that was very unusual for him to be there that many times.

The pen color changes.

Kline: what we realized was that raymond clark

Was signing into each of his rooms

With the initials r-c with a green-inked pen.

Narrator: the pen found with annie is also green.

Raymond clark's pen changes color after 1:30 pm.

We know that he had his green pen at 1:30,

And at 3:48, we know he had a black pen.

Narrator: no one else uses a green-colored pen.

The evidence points to raymond clark being

The prime suspect,

But so far, it's all circumstantial.

The more and more the investigation wore on,

The more and more it looked like raymond clark

Might have had something to do with annie le's m*rder.

Narrator: to prove he is annie's k*ller,

Detectives need more evidence.

So they go back to his movements on cctv.

♪♪

Kline: we found raymond clark walking in the lab area

Wearing blue scrubs and a yellow lab coat.

Wait.

Can you rewind that?

Dadio: so, we make a connection like, "wait a minute.

Raymond clark is wearing, in video,

A yellow disposable lab coat

On the day that annie goes missing."

And then we find a yellow disposable lab coat

That was discarded that had annie's blood on it.

Narrator: investigators scroll forward,

Waiting for clark to next reappear.

♪♪

There he is again.

We know that around 10 o'clock, he left the building.

Maybe he was on a break.

And at that time, he was wearing blue scrubs.

He was outside for about 20 minutes,

And he came back inside wearing the same blue scrubs.

♪♪

And the next time we see him on video

Is with the fire alarm going off at 12:50,

And he leaves again with blue scrubs.

♪♪

Narrator: suddenly, something jumps out at sergeant kline.

Wait. Rewind that.

Now go back to the footage of him

Leaving the building at 10:00 am.

♪♪

Pause it there.

♪♪

Look at that.

There was a change. Something was different.

♪♪

♪♪

Narrator: investigators believe that

Lab technician raymond clark k*lled phd student annie le,

And surveillance footage could be about to prove it.

When he left the building around 10 o'clock,

The blue scrubs he was wearing had a red drawstring.

♪♪

When he returned to the building at 1:10 after the fire alarm,

You can clearly see that he had a blue drawstring.

Why did he change his scrubs?

From a video-surveillance perspective,

It was very important.

Narrator: police have their man in sight.

And the dna results are in.

Dadio: when that green pen was sent up for analysis,

Both ray's dna and annie's dna

Both came back to being on that green pen.

[ Camera shutter clicks ]

The blood on the lab coat, on the sock,

And on the blue glove were in fact annie's.

Ray's dna also came back to being on

That yellow disposable lab coat.

Ray's dna came back to being on the white sock.

So now we have our victim's dna and our suspect's dna

On the same items of evidence that were hidden,

Most of them, throughout the scene.

That ties ray to the m*rder of annie le.

♪♪

Narrator: the dna evidence, the surveillance footage,

And the key-card data completely exonerate both annie's fiancé

And the external contractor from the investigation.

♪♪

Raymond clark is arrested for annie's m*rder.

♪♪

They find him at a hotel in cromwell,



This morning at approximately 8:25 am,

They effected their arrest warrant

For raymond clark.

Mr. Clark has been taken into custody

And is returning to new haven as we speak.

[ Siren wailing ]

Narrator: with clark locked up in police custody,

Investigators search for a possible motive.

We scrutinized her e-mail and his e-mail traffic.

Narrator: on the day of annie's m*rder,

Clark received an e-mail from his coworker.

Annie le sent out an e-mail

Announcing that she was gonna be married,

That she was gonna be out of work for a couple days

On her honeymoon.

Narrator: investigators believe that this was

The catalyst for the attack.

And raymond clark had been carrying a torch

For her for years and confronted her about it,

And when she said that she was with somebody else,

Was probably taken aback by the fact

That he was romantically attracted to her.

♪♪

Narrator: now investigators can finally piece together

What happened to annie le.

Annie arrives at her lab building at 10:09 am

♪♪

And then enters g13 two minutes later.

♪♪

At 10:35, raymond clark returns from break

And checks his e-mails.

Five minutes later, he enters lab g13.

♪♪

Oh. Hi, raymond.

What are you do-- raymond, what --

What are you doing?! Stop!

Stop! Stop! What are you --

We believe that annie was initially attacked in g13,

And where she was attacked,

You couldn't have seen from the door.

♪♪

Lawton: we think that after she was m*rder*d,

Raymond clark flew into a minor panic,

Knew that he couldn't keep her there,

And she was moved over to room g22.

He started looking for a place to hide the body.

We saw fingerprints on some stainless-steel panels

Up in the ceiling because he tried to open one of them up

To hide the body up in the ceiling,

But he realized that that wasn't gonna work.

He looked for another place just to put her.

[ Alarm blaring ]

Narrator: but before clark could find a place to hide annie,

The fire alarm goes off at 12:50 pm.

♪♪

Not wanting anyone to notice his bloodstained scrubs,

He quickly changes and discards the bloody ones,

Leaving the building with everyone else

Through the side exit.

♪♪

Annie was in that building, more than likely in room g22,

The storage room, because we had aspirated blood there.

♪♪

Narrator: after the fire alarm,

Raymond clark re-enters the lab building and returns to g22,

Moving annie's body into the bathroom.

♪♪

♪♪

And then at some point between the fire alarm and 3:48,

She was put in the wall.

♪♪

Lawton: this crime was what they call a crime of passion,

But I've often said

For a criminal that committed his first m*rder,

He did a pretty good job hiding a body.

♪♪

Narrator: raymond clark takes a plea deal

That will limit his sentence to 44 years
