you're right it's as if the ocean moved

looks like our Footprints have been

even the fancy patterns are gone the

ones we made when we played in the sand

water and our Footprints have

disappeared along with our sand castle

and the ocean water is further up the

beach past the spot where we were

playing in the sand are you thinking

happened the tide came

in I think you're right yeah how could I

forget the seawat Moves In and Out

across the beach many times during the

day so as the tide swept in the water

must have washed away our sand castle

then the tide carried in other things

like these shells these twigs and oh

another

feather you know what that means frny we

can use them to build an even better

sand

castle these shells and twigs look great

on our new sand castle and this time we

won't have to worry about the tide

because we built our sand castle further

away from the

shoreline thanks for all your help

little practice well perhaps we should

finish raking the leaves into another

pile this time somewhere sheltered from

uh hello no silly over here Jeepers it's

my Pioneer Friend Lucy hi Lucy what are

you doing over there I'm getting milk I

thought milk came from the store milk

comes from dairy cows like buttercup

it's a horse and wagon ride to the

nearest General Store so instead we grow

and make just about everything using our

very own hands

oh sounds like hard work it is but

Pioneers take pride in being able to

live off the land Buttercup has plenty

of milk to share both for her calf and

with my family would you like to try

milking Buttercup

absolutely this is buttercup's utter

it's where she stores her milk just pull

a bit here and there you go that's it

zammie swear if I'm squeezing too hard

Buttercup oh milking never hurts a cow

if I forget to milk Buttercup for a

couple of days buttercups utter would

get very heavy and

uncomfortable I certainly don't want

that to happen oh Buttercup won't let

you forget she'd be mowing

plenty there that's the morning milking

I'll milk Buttercup again in the evening

this way

Franny look at all this food we store

everything we can from the summer so we

have good things to eat when it's too

cold outside for things to grow these

apples potatoes and onions will go in

The Root Cellar The Cellar is a room

underneath our Log Cabin this is

strawberry jam I picked the strawberries

myself these are dried beans mom will

make a pot of soup with those there's

pickles Hickory nuts and

peaches M I smell bread mom just baked

those loaves in the wood stove oven

they're still too hot to eat nothing's

better with a slice of warm bread than a

tasty terrific glass of milk I'll say

but today buttercups milk won't be for

drinking we're going to make butter will

you bring that stone jar over here

please Franny okie

dokie it's a bit chilly the stone jar

keeps it nice and cool perfect for

making butter how can you make butter

out of milk buttercups milk is full of

cream see how the cream Rises to the top

we just skim off the cream and put it in

to the butter

churner and this special paddle is

called the

Dasher listen that's the cream

churning sounds like the cream is being

mixed fantastically fast the churning

makes the cream become thicker thick

enough to put on top of fruit or cake

just like whipped cream exactly if you

keep on churning the thick cream starts

to stick together even more so much that

it becomes solid better I'll help two

hands are better than

one we're both butter

butter there must be something else we

go the spoon's still not long enough I

can barely mix the cream

ooh instead of a longer spoon let's pour

the cream into a smaller container great

faster wait a dingdong minute stirring

fast doesn't make the cream into butter

it just makes the cream fly out of the

bowl if only there was a way to cover

the bowl like a

lid I could cover the bowl with my apron

but that would just make my apron wet

there must be something we can use

Lucy you can really shake things up in

these jars and nothing falls out of the

jars because of the lids

Lucy's cow Buttercup in pioneer days

they didn't have many stores and made

everything by hand like making butter

from fresh
