survival they called it sailor bills

good medicine and while he lived in the

village All Good Things seemed to

flourish no one envied sailor Bill's

Medallion and he and wi dance became

great friends but grandmother didn't

something else happen something bad yes

sailor bill went on a voyage and that's

when it happened and you don't remember

any more of the story no but I'm sure

invented the telephone immigrants also

brought new words which became a part of

our language Rodeo is from

Mexico hurricane came from the tyo

Indians of Puerto

Rico and kindergarten is from Germany

they also brought some of their ways of

life like the birthday cake that's a

custom first introduced here by

immigrants all around us are things we

may think are American but they were

actually brought here by

immigrants many of us can trace Our

Roots back to immigrants and all of us

with our different backgrounds have a

part in making the United States the

interesting place it is

At first I felt like a

stranger everything was so hard at first

a whole new language to learn finding a

place to live and work even the money

was

different but now it feels like home and

so will this place to you pretty

immigrant and the newcomers have not

always been welcomed even by those who

were immigrants before them but it

doesn't have to be so hard just by

remembering what it's like to move into

festival celebrated every year by

in Vietnam and I'm 11 years old my

Vietnamese name is mink Joe which means

brilliant Pearl here in Oakland I live

with my parents my brother and my two

younger sister at home I speak two

languages Vietnamese and English however

at school I speak English with my

teachers and my friends I like sports

very much swimming is one of my favorite

activities I'm also a

Pianist at time I give solo piano

recital for friends and

neighbors during Vietnamese holidays our

friends and I celebrate the occasion

Vietnamese food here in California we

have many friends with whom we celebrate

funny how would you feel if someone made

fun of the way you spoke I would feel

insulted it really happens to me

sometimes because of my

braces I'd feel different cuz that's the

way I talk and I don't talk like them I

tell my mother to take me to speech

class it wouldn't bother me everyone
