space. How did I get way up here? And

how do I get down? Hey, can someone give

me a ride?

Oh, yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

I'm rooting for the power slugs all the

way. They're definitely going to win the

championship.

In your dreams, larve. The flap snappers

can cream the power slugs any old day,

and we're their number one fans.

[Music]

You whizwigs are all washed up. It's

just like your team.

It's okay. It just needs a simple

repair. You'll have your scooter back

soon.

But we were on our way to the moon.

Today is the Moonbot Championship. The

Zula Flat Snappers against the solar

system power slugs.

Wa! That sounds like a good game.

Then you can take us, please, please.

We're sorry, Wizzy and Wig. Normally we

could, but right now Moto Zeter and I

have work around headquarters that has

to be done.

Maybe later. But we've got to get to the

moon to see the game.

I'm afraid you won't be able to without

a rocket scooter.

Why not?

A very good question. Let's check the

Mtopedia.

The only known way to get way out into

space is with the powerful force of

something like a rocket.

Aren't rockets those pointy things?

Well, one part is pointy, but a rocket

is made of several parts, and each one

is needed to help it work. The nose cone

shape makes the rocket fly easily

through the air. The payload is what the

rocket is carrying. The airframe holds

the rocket fuel and motor. And those

wing-like things are called fins.

But they don't come from fish. They

guide the rocket.

But how can it fly? It's like letting

the air out of a balloon. As the air is

let go, it pushes back, which sends the

balloon forward. You mean you let the

air out of a rocket?

Not air. Instead, a rocket pushes back

with a fast burning fuel,

sending it forward and up very, very

powerfully.

And that's how all rockets work,

basically. Yes. And rocket powered

vehicles come in all shapes and sizes,

from Earth's famous space shuttle to

your scooter.

So, you see, without rocket power, I'm

afraid there's no way to get into space.

And no way to get to the Moonball game.

[Music]

Hey, we've got wings. Why don't we just

fly there? That's a great idea. Borga,

tell Bula we've gone to the moon.

Okay.

Who needs rockets when you've got wings?

[Music]

What are you Whizwigs doing?

Flying to the moon.

Are we almost there?

Oh, sure. All you have to do is flap

your wings about a zillion trillion more

times.

Looks like Molta was right. Rockets may

be the only way to get into space. But

what if there's another way? One that

hasn't been discovered yet. We could be

the ones to discover it and we'd get to

the moon in time for the game.

Uhhuh.

But shouldn't we do some research first

and learn about how others have tried to

get into space?

There's no time for that. We'll miss the

game.

[Music]

Balloon power. I'll bet nobody's ever

gone to the moon in a helium balloon.

You're right. No one ever has. That's

because when helium balloons get up this

high,

that happens.

Hey, the moon's the other way.

[Music]

[Music]

Too bad you whizwigs are going to miss

seeing the power slugs win the

championship. ship. But I might have a

way to help.

Really, Larvy? Careful, Wig. He must be

up to something.

I just figured that since you have

wings, you could fly to the moon.

We tried that, remember?

Oh, sure. On those teensy watsy wings.

I'm talking about great big wings.

With wings this big, it' be easy to fly

to the moon.

Of course, if you're not interested.

We are.

Okay. What do you got to trade? Uh oh.

We've got some Ultra Action Amoeba comic

books.

Yeah. And what else?

See you whizwigs at the game.

[Music]

You tried using giant wings. Uh, we we

just wanted to find a way to get into

space that no one else discovered

before.

Well, it's great that you two used your

imaginations. And you certainly came up

with some creative ideas. But you'd have

better luck if you learned about space

travel first.

If you had, you'd have found out that

wings by themselves can't get you to the

moon. But wings as part of a rocket can.

Really?

Zeta's right. These wings are the exact

shape of a rocket's fin. If we were to

build a rocket using these, they could

help you get to the moon.

Can we Moto? Oh, please.

Can we build a rocket? Please.

Well, now that our chores are done, I'd

be happy to.

Count us in to help.

Go, go, go. Remember,

rocket powered vehicles can be in all

kinds of sizes and shapes, but the basic

parts of the rocket itself are the same.

There's the nose cone. Its shape helps

the rocket move easily through the air.

The airframe, which holds the fuel and

the motor.

The payload is what the rocket is

carrying. This payload is a pilot and

passenger.

And of course, the fins, which make sure

it goes where you steer it. And there

you have it. Wow, your own custom rocket

with windshield wipers, an indash

popcorn popper, 43 flavor milkshake

maker, and a cup holder.

Plus something that I call the fly it

for me feature. It uses radio signals to

steer the rocket in the direction you

want it to go.

It can take us right to the game.

But I still have one more thing to do to

the steering system. Wait here while I

get the part in my lab. That'll give us

time to clean up. Then we can all go.

So, this is your new rocket scooter.

Yep. Moto built it for us. It's really

fast and has all kinds of cool stuff in

it.

Good for you. Oh, by the way, I'm done

reading these comic books. You want them

back?

Yeah, we sure would.

Okay. Thanks for the trade. Blurry. No.

Moto hasn't fixed the ste the system.

We better tell Moto.

[Music]

And then he just took off.

Oh dear. And before I finalized the

steering program, he won't be able to

control it.

We've got to catch him. This is a job

for the Zula patrol.

Woohoo! All right. Woohoo!

[Music]

[Music]

We can't catch him.

Moto said the fly it for me feature

makes the rocket follow radio signals

and our tails can send out radio signals

so we can make the rocket follow us.

Uh-huh.

[Music]

Look, they're sending radio signals to

get the rocket to follow them.

[Music]

Get ready now, Gordon.

[Music]

Yeah. All right.

[Music]

Ladies and gentlemen, arthropods and

robots, it's down to the wire in this

championship game between the solar

system power slugs and the Zula Flap

snappers.

They did it. The blood rappers have won

the championship.

And

so, thanks to the technology of rockets,

Wizzywig and the rest of the Zula Patrol

have been able to go to the moon and see

the game. But for Larara, the ending is

not so happy. The Zulu Patrol told his

mother.

[Music]

Hello, Blastoff Buff. Time for our molto

moment. If you were paying attention,

and I know you were, you'd know about

rockets.

Hey, it looks like me.

Well, yes, there is a family resemblance

around the airframe. But let's not

forget the rocket also has a nose cone,

payload, and fins. And rockets are used

to travel where?

That's right. Rockets are used to travel

into space. But even rockets this small

are very powerful. So don't build them

at home unless you're an astronaut

or a rocket scientist.

Bye.

[Music]

Ah, the stars. So bright, so beautiful,

so far away. So what? They have nothing

to do with our story. So let's just get

to it.

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

What in the galaxy is half an egg?

after him.

Wa!

You're making me dizzy. What's going on?

Gorga snorted up our toy chest with all

our toys inside.

Don't worry. You know, he always snorts

stuff back out again.

But until he does, we can't play.

Sure you can. Why don't you just make

your own toys?

Make our own what?

Well, for instance, how about making a

solar kite? Sort of a toy version of a

solar sail.

Great idea. Solar sails could be a way

to travel in space in the future. I

thought that a sail was a big piece of

cloth that uses the wind to push a boat

along the water.

Yeah, like on an old pirate ship. But

what's a solar sail?

A solar sail does the same thing, but

instead of using the wind, it uses light

from the sun.

It uses light. Sounds like it's time for

a trip into the Motoedia.

Laura, what's happening?

These the photons, everyone, they're

tiny bundles of light that move away

from the sun. Normally, you wouldn't

really see them. Hey, there's a solar

sail now. See how the photons hit the

thin shiny material of the solar sail?

When they bounce off, it pushes the sail

forward.

But photons don't push very hard. So,

the ship has to be really light, and you

need a lot of photons pushing at once,

which means the sail has to be really,

really big.

Wow, that's the size of a football

field. With all those photons pushing

that big sail, I bet it goes super fast.

Actually, it starts off pretty slowly,

but then it goes faster and faster.

Someday solar sails might be a way to

fly to the stars.

But they'll never have to pull over to a

gas station and say, "Fill her up." Cuz

they'll run on light power from the sun.

Cool. Let's get back home so we can get

started on our solar cell kite.

[Music]

Hello, Zilla Patrol. Zer speaking. Have

a problem in space? where the place um

to call for help.

Oh, what a thrill. I cannot believe it.

I'm talking to the real sitter. Oh, I'm

such a huge Zula Patrol fan. Oh,

gee, mister. Thanks. What can I do for

you?

Well, I just wanted to say that I just

love the new Zula Patrol billboard that

you put on Castaway Asteroid. It's

marvelous.

Hey, thanks. Glad you like it.

Wow, that's one fan who just loves our

new billboard. Uh,

Zeter, we don't have a new billboard.

We don't even have an old billboard.

Huh? We'd better go check this out.

There we are. Bigger than life.

It certainly does look like us, doesn't

it?

Yes, but who put it here?

Let's take a closer look.

[Music]

At least I used my good side.

Look at that.

What's that?

It's Trudtor. And look at that flag.

He's gone pirate.

Hi, mateies. It is true. I have gone

pirate.

Yeah, this pirate hat is giving me

triangle hair.

All right, Truder. I don't know what

you're up to this time, but you won't

get away with it.

Robot crew.

Bang down the hatches, whatever that

means, and surround them.

Oh, that's better. H. Now, if you don't

mind, I'll be taking your ship. It'll be

perfect for me pirating.

[Music]

Not a ship.

[Music]

Not you, 72. You fly the old ship home

and park it.

[Music]

Onage, little patrol.

What am I saying? You're not going

anywhere. You don't have a ship.

Well, team, that's it. We're stuck here

out in the middle of nowhere with no

radio, no scooter, and no ship.

But it could be an adventure. We could

build a fort to live in, and every day

would be like a camp out. We have our

pet and our best friends. What else do

we need?

How about food and water?

Oh, yeah. Good boy.

And our ship is programmed to not let

anyone else fly it. If we don't get it

back soon, the ship will turn into a

giant glob of green pudding. Whose silly

idea was that?

Yours.

Oh, right.

Clever

team. We need to figure out a way to get

off of this asteroid and soon.

Boy, that billboard stuff is shining

right in my eye.

Shining.

I've got it. Molto, could we use this

shiny foil stuff to make a solar sail?

Yeah, we could use it to sail home.

Wizzy Wig, that's a wonderful idea,

right? We can use the wood and metal

from the billboard frame to make a

sailboat. Nerd sail spaceship

powered by light from the sun. This is a

job for the Zula patrol. Let's get

building.

Um, wait a minute. I don't mean to be a

wet blanket, but doesn't mean that we

need some tools.

[Music]

[Applause]

So that's where my tools went.

[Music]

It's a beauty. I just hope this thing

can actually sail in space

and that it can catch up with Trud in

time. All aboard.

[Music]

I named thee the SS solar sloop.

Now what?

We simply have to turn the shiny side of

the big sail to the sun and wait for the

photons, the tiny bundles of light to

give us a push.

It's working.

[Applause]

[Music]

We don't seem to be moving very fast or

even at all.

We're moving, Zeta. Just very slowly. A

solar sail takes a while to get up to

speed. But once it does, there's nothing

faster.

I sure hope so, cuz at this rate, we'll

never catch up with Trud.

Well, then we might as well enjoy the

ride.

[Music]

We'd much

aid

and break dance with a comet or two.

We could sail above a whale eating sushi

with his tail. If I could go solar

sailing with you.

We can visit stars.

Solar sailing. Play hopscotch with

catch moon beams in jars.

There's nothing rather would do

then go solar sailing with you.

There spaceship computer. Get a move on.

Get a move on.

I do not have to take orders from a

space pirate or his hairy bird. I only

work for the Zula patrol.

I've asked Mie, you're under the command

of Captain Intruder now. You best get

used to it.

Too late. I started the countdown.

Changing ship to pudding.

You mean this whole ship is going to

turn into a pile of wiggly dessert?

Yummy. Oh, wait. That means no pirate

ship, right? Boy, laddy, for 10 seconds

to have fun. N 8.

What's a pirate got to do?

Now, let's get our ship back.

Four, three, two.

Ship, stop pudding meltdown.

Putting meltdown stopped. About time. I

was starting to feel a wee bit jiggly.

Our robot mies. Grab them. Make them

walk the plank and any other pirate

stuff you can think of.

Computer, raise the ship's magnet.

No, it's just not fair.

My pirate costume.

Oh, traitor. Your pirate days are over.

Move along and never darken these waters

again.

Huh? The pirate thing. It's catchy.

Now I have to look at their faces

staring at me the whole way home.

I can take care of that.

Serves you right, Captain Intruder. It's

time you learned that crime does not

pay. Hey, I want a billboard like that.

No, seriously, bigger than that. And I

want my hamster on it, too.

[Music]

H.

Oh my. Yes. The moto moment. Well, uh,

where were we? Oh, right. Solar sails.

Sails? You mean like on a sailboat?

Well, in a way, except a solar sail is

much bigger and is built from shiny

material. But more importantly, a solar

sail isn't pushed by wind. Do you know

what pushes it along? Uh, a bulldozer.

Nope. Do you know?

That's right. Sunlight. A solar sail

catches tiny bundles of light from the

sun called photons, which bounce off the

sail, and that moves the craft through

space. Let's see.

Space fly without fuel.

It's the wave of the future. And here's

the wave of today.
