on my day off which is just about to

i don't think it's a good idea to let

malto fly that old whirlycopter of his

if i've been sitting in the garage for

50 years i wouldn't try to fly relax

everybody that whole thing will never

start oh

wild blue yonder here i come

i just remembered why i stopped flying

this the wiring's a little mixed up now

okay everybody we've got to get that

soil back in the hole fast

what's the big emergency it's just a

bunch of dirt that isn't dirt it's soil

what's the difference between dirt and

soil dirt is what gets stuck under your

fingernails after playing in the mud but

soil is a different story soil is an

important and precious resource like

water without it we couldn't survive

you see some planets and moons have a

top layer of loose material

on earth's moon the loose material is

just dirt which is made of dust and

rocks

but on earth the loose material on the

surface is called soil

is anybody in here

soil is full of lots of tiny living

organisms and creatures all running

around and doing stuff it's sort of like

a city where everyone has a job to do

and these tiny organisms and creatures

work together so that living things like

plants can grow in the soil soil is made

partly from rock that has been out in

all kinds of weather for many many years

the rockets chipped and worn away

getting smaller and smaller eventually

becoming pebbles sand silt and clay soil

is also made from natural materials like

rotting dead leaves twigs and animals

the mix of all this stuff in the soil

has to be just right to grow things

which means the earth's soil must have

just the right amount of living things

in it because lots of plants grow there

and lots of animals live there but how

does soil make things grow i know just

the experiment to help you understand

how it happens

here we have two terrariums

in one we put rocks and soil we dug up

outside

in the other we put just rocks

next put some plant seeds in both

then water them and give them light

and finally put a lid on both to keep in

the water

then you wait and watch them carefully

to see what happens

um

this is going to take a while how about

a snack

oh for pete's sake they're just some

cute little bugs they wonder why they're

here we have a job for the zero patrol

well that's the bug of a different color

what seems to be the problem

oh it's terrible you have to help us

tell him worm you're good at stories

well it all started this morning

when um we don't have time for this our

home is being attacked by a giant

horrible monster you see we live under a

beautiful meadow just north of here it's

got really large healthy top soil you

love the place

so there we were at the local community

center doing our part to fill the soil

with nutrients you know the stuff that

helps things

don't know but i'm not here

that's why we need your help someone is

destroying our home someone who doesn't

know how important soil is it's terrible

to be so hurtful to someone else's home

you're right this is a job for the zula

right down there but all i see is a rock

look hi we're the zuma patrol g'day

neighbors we're the moles i'm bruce and

this is my wife sheila you're not from

around here are you no we live

underground in a field north of here the

soil gets very chilly there during the

winter so we're building a home above

ground over air to stay in during those

nippy months down under come on in take

a look

nice spread eh we've even got a bowling

alley in the basement we have to talk to

you about something we don't think you

know that you've been doing harm to the

environment why are you dragging away

all that beautiful soil we're making

room for a big garden

i just love daffodils and hollyhocks

don't you

nothing like that is gonna grow on that

rock the soil that you've taken away is

very very important without that soil

nothing will grow here

i've heard some pretty tall tales in my

day but that one's a beauty

you moles may be above ground but you're

still living in the dark you know you're

really starting to bug me

oh dear this is turning cranky time for

everyone to go take a nap but but

malto you've got to make them understand

that soil is needed for most plants to

grow well

i have some diagrams about soil i can

show them and i suppose i could whip up

some kind of demonstration using

pudding you do what you want we need to

take matters into our own feelers

yeah

he's right let's get him time for action

now as you can clearly see from this

chart the ingredients of soil are

pebbles sand filled and clay and organic

material such as

now what do we do booler i'm thinking

i'm thinking hey look something changed

in the terrarium

little plants are starting to grow out

of the soil

and there are bugs too

nothing is happening in the terrarium

with just rocks in it hmm

hey that's it there are bugs and organic

stuff such as rotting plants animal

material and other organisms in the

terrarium with soil and no bugs or other

materials in the terrarium without soil

so the plant seeds grew in the soil but

not in the rocks that means soil was

needed for the plants to grow

yo what's with the glass wall buddy

we're gonna be late for soccer practice

sorry about that come with me

we've got some molds to see

and you say you walted both the soil and

the rocks but nothing grew in the rocks

exactly and here we thought you were all

yanking our tails we sure are sorry

i don't get it

why did nothing grow in the rocks

well the experiment shows that soil has

just the right stuff in it for things to

grow like dead leaves twigs animals

because they provide the nutrients the

food that growing things need sounds

like we need to cover that rook back up

with soil

all back in order shame about the grass

though don't worry the whole community

pitched in and loaded this soil with

nutrients we'll have grass again in no

time

the moles and the bugs lived happily

neighborhood bowling league

if you wanted to find something many

different species of orchids grow in one

place earth's amazon rainforest to be

exact what's a rainforest oh

excellent question one that's perfect

for the multopedia

question what question whoa

rainforests are forests with tall trees

and lots of rain almost all rainforests

are located in an area around the middle

of the earth where it's very warm and

the amazon rainforest where many orchids

come from gets over 80 inches of rain a

year there it is the amazon rainforest

there's so much sunlight to make the

plants grow and i've never seen so many

birds the amazon rainforest has over 2

000 types of birds and many other kinds

of plants and animals also live there

the plants of the rainforest help

produce a large part of the air that we

breathe

i'd like to take more time and really

explore the amazon rainforest someday

um

uh

but i guess not today

well for us someday is right now we need

to get iris another orchid you said it

leave a note we're off to planet earth

there are 950 of us living off this

green algae on seymour's fur

it used to be

951 but sylvia got uppity and moved to a

duck that's how it is in the rainforest

lots of living things depend on each

other to live

semo usually eats and sleeps up in the

trees but sometimes he falls down below

below in the lower canopy is the best

place to be

down here the canopy is nice and shady

and we get a lot less rain

ah

okay

but why are you talking about a can of

peas you are adorable

not a can of peas canopies the branches

of the trees are tangled together to

make a covering called a canopy there's

an upper canopy at the top of the tall

trees and the lower canopy covering the

bottom but here in the lower canopy is

best says you i say the upper canopy is

more marvelous

true we get more rain but it is bright

and sunny and bigger and taller and most

of the birds live up here

that is because you hog all the sunlight

but since it's darker down here the

flowers have to be more colorful to

attract the insects who help them

multiply

the upper canopy is where i want to be

the sunshine and the rain make the

flowers grow it is the place i love a

hundred feet above where the woolly

monkeys

is shady as can be

the flowers are more colorful here by

far down here it's nice and dry i'll

make you insect pie

while the anaconda sing and play guitar

i don't care what you say the upper

canopy is the best

lower

upper

it seems to me you need both canopies to

make the rainforest work

sure the upper canopy blocks light from

the lower but it also protects it from

too much rain

and since the lower canopy has less hot

sun the water there doesn't dry up as

fast which keeps the forest from losing

all its water so you two need each other

well when you put it that way it's

marvellous

wait a minute iris said her orchid needs

water and light then it must be in the

upper canopy

you know

now that you mention it it does look

kind of familiar i think i saw it up

there

nice orchids but they don't look like

irises

hey don't run away i know where to find

the flower you're looking for huh you

mean you know where it is hey they don't

call me nose-a-lot ocelot for nothing

follow me

wow that sure looks like it close enough

we'll take it wait

it's one of the last orchids of its kind

in the forest

take it and it might become extinct

extinct extinct means there are no more

left

i should know i'm in danger of becoming

extinct myself

well we're not adding this organ to that

list right whiz no way it's one of the

last ones

iris we're sorry about your orchid

huh it's okay

it looks fabulous darlings it just

needed a little plant food we thought

we'd ruined it no such thing besides it

always gets a little droopy whenever i'm

away isn't that right spooky

you were right molto many different

kinds of plants and animals live in hot

and rainy tropical rainforests most of

them live in the upper and lower

canopies of the rainforest the areas

where the branches of the giant trees

tangle together my goodness i am amazed

and delighted with what you two have

discovered about the rainforest on your

own

gee not exactly on our own malto we had

a little help from our rainforest

friends
