welcome I am Luna in my travels I've

learned much about moons which I'll

gladly share some moons are round like

Earth's Moon While others are lumpy like

Mars Two Moons Phobos and Deimos which

are shaped like potatoes and moons come

in all sizes from Tiny moonlets to the

fourth giant Galilean moons of Jupiter

so there are lots of moons and they're

all different but you all the planets

have moot no not all the planets have

moons

ask Luna how did the planets get their

so how did you get your moon Saturn say

like little old Phoebe over there Phoebe

well frankly my dear Venus I have a lot

invisible force that pulls things toward

a planet

long ago I was an eager young Planet a

real go-getter always on the lookout for

another moon or two then what should I

see but a Wandering chunk of ice and

rock washing by I don't even think it

noticed me until it got close

but by then it was captured caught by

the pool of gravity Phoebe went right to

work as a moon in his stayed ever since

well we discovered one-way planets get

their moons they capture or catch them

with a pool of gravity

biggest moons well I'm glad you asked

billions of years ago a disc of gas and

dust came together swirling and slowly

clumping

becoming thicker until they finally

formed me and most of my moons what the

moons were made at the same time I was

from the same stuff that's why they're

so Fabu I captured most of my other

moons just like Saturn of course there

was another idea going around for a

while some folks thought I used to spin

so fast that some of my Surface just

flew off and formed moons

might spin to see if I could shake loose

some of my Surface to make a moon but I

but in order to spin off a moon you'd

have to be hot enough to still be partly

liquid you've cooled down over the last

few billion years I suppose

Jupiter said it was just an idea some

folks had he told me his biggest moons

were really formed at the same time he

was from the same stuff yeah that that's

another way to make moons yeah I guess

I'll never have a moon

Iris what's wrong I was just talking to

Venus she arranged to get herself a moon

the same way Earth did my stars why

Earth moon was formed in a different way

than any other moon it's called the big

wack long long ago the earth was nothing

like it is today and it had no moons at

all but then it was hit by an asteroid

as big as Mars eventually all that stuff

that was whacked out of the earth came

together and formed the Earth's moon and

that's why they call it the big Wok but

if Venus agreed to get a moon the same

way Earth did that means some huge

asteroid is heading her way ready to

crash into her

silliest thing I ever heard now excuse

and back well I'm here and I'm having a

wonderful time but I guess I can't enter

the race since I don't have a moon wait

the different moons were formed me with

chewing gum and duct tape no way some

wounds were asteroids that were captured

by a planet's gravity and other moons

were made at the same time as the

planets added the same stuff and then

there's Earth's moon when Earth was hit

by a giant asteroid part of Earth's

surface flew off and became the moon

that's called the big whack really bet

they could have used some duct tape then

Jupiter Fest before yeah a talent show

with all of Jupiter's moons wow hey look

at IO she sure is colorful today I think

of all Jupiter's moons IO is my favorite

such colors

thank you it's nothing really is face

painting going to be your talent for the

competition oh I'm not going to be in

the talent show but you're one of

Jupiter's four biggest moons the

galileans the show wouldn't be the same

without you thanks but I don't have any

real talent just lots of volcanoes and

they just erupt I don't have much

control over it besides I feel it's

funny erupting in front of an audience

full of strangers Moto why does Iowa

erupt oh my thoughts to explain

something this big I need some big help

from the multipedia

like all moons Isle orbits or travels

around its planet and like other moons

Isle travels in an ellipse sort of an

egg-shaped path but isle's path is a

little more egg-shaped than the paths of

some of Jupiter's other moons that means

that sometimes it's a little closer to

Jupiter and sometimes it's a little bit

farther away

Jupiter's Gravity the invisible force

that draws things toward it is very very

strong it's especially strong on aisle

because it's so close to Jupiter so when

Isle goes from being closer to being

farther away Jupiter's gravity pushes

and pulls at it and that makes the stuff

inside aisle heat up it's like taking a

rubber ball and squeezing it over and

over when you do the rubber ball gets

warm just like a rubber ball when Iowa

is pulled and stretched stuff inside

gets hot and melts and then IELTS

volcanoes erupt

smells like rotten eggs what you're

smelling is called sulfur and it's in

the lava IO is like a pot of soup if it

gets hot enough the soup inside boils

over that's why its surface is covered

with sulfur

my she certainly is in a hurry not to be

in the talent show I wish we could talk

her into doing something in the show

well maybe we can at least we can give

it a try you're right come on this is a

job for the Zula Patrol

okay now I understand why io's volcanoes

erupt but I don't get what makes her so

colorful do you nope but maybe we can go

figure it out good idea I'll write down

what we discovered

hoping we can change your mind about not

being in the talent show no I don't

think so but isn't this a nice spot and

look since I'm away from the push and

pull of my usual orbit I'm not even

but what about Jupiter how will it look

if his most colorful moon misses the big

guy's big day

I hadn't thought of it that way I

wouldn't want to hurt his feelings oh

but I really don't want to erupt while I

perform then how about we help you find

a super new talent for the contest with

my Orbit I mean with Jupiter's gravity

so close I might erupt in the middle of

my song Maybe not since you've been away

from Jupiter's tugging and pulling for a

while the material under your surface is

probably cooled off so when you go back

your eruptions won't start until it

heats up again so if I sing my song

right away I should be okay come on iO

give it a try hmm you know this just

might work and it just might not

I owe my eruptions to you as a moon I'm

attractive volcanically active more than

anyone else it is true I'm called IO

that's spelled i o I only erupt cause of

you your gravity tugging and pulling and

lugging sets up a volcano or two other

moons might be one color but I like to

wear quite a few

being abrupt here I just might erupt

here that's something I frequently do

well Intruder always wanted to be a hit

on the stage

it's why it smells like rotten eggs and

I was feeling hot and cold when the

eruptions happened making all those

colors so maybe temperature has

something to do with the colors well

there are other factors but temperature

is a big part of what causes the color

changes good for you

good about myself and my special talents

Fest I guess you could say that IO stole

the show when she burst into song

look one way in which Iowa is different

from all other moons is that it is the

most volcanically active body in the

solar system its volcanoes are always

bubbling and spurting thanks mostly to

Jupiter's Gravity the invisible force

that draws things toward it Jupiter is

always tugging and pulling at IO as it

moves around the planet in an ellipse

sort of egg-shaped sometimes a little

closer sometimes a little bit farther

away oh my I'm getting dizzy I wonder if

IO has this problem
