animals

i just found some really strange ones

floating out in deep space inside some

fancy schmancy carriers take a look

they're so cute what are they

i don't know what they are where they

come from or who they belong to but i

hope to figure it out when i get back to

zula

we have an emergency in another

dimension there's a football snatch up a

beetle wart tree and it won't come down

one good place to start would be to

figure out in what sort of climate they

belong

uh malto what exactly is climate isn't

it the same as weather time for the

multopedia

weather and climate are two very

different things

weather is what's happening in the air

outside right now

weather can change every day and weather

can change quickly

climate is different over years and

years a place will have mostly the same

kind of weather the kind of weather in

that place over a long time is called

its climate and the climate there

usually stays the same for hundreds of

years

some places for example are mostly hot

and dry while other places might be

mostly cold and what and there are some

places that can be cold one part of the

year and hot another part

you can measure how hot cold wet or dry

places and after you measure those kinds

of things day after day

week after week year after year for many

years then you know what the climate is

there

some kinds of animals have body parts

that help them live in their climates

like polar bears for instance they're

able to stay warm in their icy cold

climate because they have thick fur

or camels in their hot desert climate

there isn't much water so camels use

their humps to store water so they can

take it with them other kinds of animals

act in special ways to help them live in

their climates

like a frog that lives in a climate

where it's hot part of the year and cold

another part

during the cold part of the year the

frog buries itself in the mud at the

bottom of a pond to keep from freezing

and it doesn't come out until it's warm

again

so the way our strange little guests

look and act can give us clues about the

climate they live in or to put it

another way

look out the window

is it cold or hot that's the weather my

friends and it changes a lot sometimes

it's windy

sometimes it's warm and blows it can be

rainy sometimes or it might even snow

the climate the climate it takes a while

to time it but once you've got the

measurements well then you know the

climate the climate the climate it's

kind of fun to rhyme it but if you

haven't learned the worst then you could

simply mime it

in different parts of the world

wow it sure is windy

my computer shows that the weather for

the last 200 years on mount zulu has

been very cold and wet and the wind

always moves this fast

so the climate here is cold and wet and

windy

oh my the ship is disappearing before

our eyes hey where's the other creature

wow she sure likes a lot of heat and

water it looks like she drank every drop

of water on the ship yeah including all

the water in the sprinkler system

that's it thirsty needs heat and drinks

and soaks up all the water she sees so

she must live in a very very hot climate

where water is hard to find but here

where water is easy to get she drinks

more than she needs and gets bigger and

bigger

she must be from a desert climate

sure look different here well you

haven't seen these plants before because

they don't grow in the climate we live

in

they only grow in a dry hot climate

there are some things you only see in a

desert

whoa

maybe thirsty should lead the way

well the desert is hot dry and sometimes

way too windy especially with all this

sand around it's always this hot here

during the day sometimes hotter it's dry

too so that must mean it has a hot and

dry climate

we really need to figure out the climate

for bob and fast let's see

bob likes to keep wet he can't stop

eating but only eats things that are

pink and purple yo

bob must come from a humid climate a

climate with a lot of wetness in the air

and his home must have food that is pink

and purple

forest it's humid there with lots of

rain and it's the only place on the

planet where you'll find the ookabuka

plant with his yummy pink and purple

blossoms then let's head to the rain

forest

you feel kind of wet i sure do this

place has lots more wetness in the air

than the other two climates warm wet and

not much wind my computer says this rain

forest has been like this for 200 years

so it has a warm wet climate

lots more wetness here

entomologist i found three strange

creatures wandering in the wilderness

i was flying the adorable creatures back

to their homes when i discovered that

their carriers had fallen out of the

cargo hold i had to come back and make

sure they found their way home somehow

and so the zulu patrol discovered all

about different climates they also found

out that they always need to bring a

snack for their passengers so they don't

eat the spaceship

fresh tomatoes it's too cold to grow

what's this place why it's my new

greenhouse greenhouse but it's all glass

and it's not even green

exactly

a greenhouse is a glass house used to

grow plants such as these tomatoes

especially in the cold winter i get it a

house full of green plants a greenhouse

whoo

it sure is warm in here

that's because the greenhouse works by

trapping heat from the sun how does it

do that well remember last summer when

we were in zula park eating ice cream

you mean when bula dropped his satin

swirl ice cream cone on the sidewalk and

it started to melt really fast because

the sidewalk was so hot

but why was the sidewalk so hot well

sunlight gives us light and heat

just like the bulb in my lap

it's warm all right so the sunlight beat

down on the sidewalk and when it hit the

sidewalk it heated it up

but not as much as it's going to heat up

zula

now let's look at the monitor the glass

lets in sunlight which give us both

light and heat

it hits the ground and heats it up

some of the heat goes out through the

glass and some is trapped inside by the

glass

so the greenhouse heats up and keeps the

plants warm enough to live and grow in

the winter bingo and did you know that

the air of a planet can make planets act

like greenhouses and trap heat it's

called the greenhouse effect

but how can a planet act like a

greenhouse oh i'm so glad you asked

let's check the multipedia

earth has a layer of air around it

called an atmosphere

the atmosphere keeps in the heat around

earth just like the glass keeps the heat

in a greenhouse i see

sunlight enters earth's atmosphere and

passes through it because the air is

clear like the glass in the greenhouse

the sunlight hits the ground and heats

it up then some of that heat rises up

through the atmosphere back into space

but a lot gets trapped by the atmosphere

causing earth to heat up

but how is the heat trapped

it's trapped by stuff in the atmosphere

called gases

gases are hard to see but i can show you

an example of one when you boil water in

a pot it turns to steam that steam is a

gas

there are lots of different kinds of

gases in the atmosphere many come from

plants and animals some of these gases

are really good at trapping the heat so

they make earth warmer like a greenhouse

which is why these gases are called

greenhouse gases and the trapping of

heat in the atmosphere is called the

greenhouse effect is the greenhouse

effect a bad thing no

without it earth would be a lot

colder is right but the greenhouse

effect is like a nice thick coat oh much

better isn't it the coat traps the heat

from your body and keeps it from going

outside the coat that's what the

atmosphere around a planet does it traps

part of a planet's heat inside it like a

coat around the planet in that way the

greenhouse effect makes earth just the

right temperature for humans in all

living things

but what would happen if there were a

lot more greenhouse gases well it is

possible to have too many

automobiles and factories can give off

more greenhouse gases than normal what

would happen then

and started doing all the chores and all

my neighbors got a robot too but the

oddest thing is they keep making more

robots and now i've got eight of them in

fact we've all got eight of them and

they're all multiplying like crazy the

news says they're all over zula how do

we stop them we have no idea iris and we

didn't send them we'll get back to you

oh my these robots are giving off very

large amounts of greenhouse gases this

could be serious i must check my

atmospheric readings

as i feared my instruments show there's

more greenhouse gas in the atmosphere

than normal it must be coming from the

robots this is bad

but i thought you said that greenhouse

gases kept everything nice and warm

yes but with so many robots giving off

so much greenhouse gases the greenhouse

effect is starting to increase really

really fast

so more heat is being trapped by the

atmosphere much faster than normal

you never did tell us what would happen

if that happens that could make our

planet too hot this is a job for the

zula patrol

balto isn't the only one who knows about

the greenhouse effect

it's all working traxie

zula will get so warm that the zuliens

will be forced to leave the planet

effect and just like in a real

greenhouse for plants the greenhouse

effect keeps earth nice and warm right
